Vancouver Liberal riding association resigns over nomination process

In one of the messiest Liberal nomination battles of this election
cycle so far, Liberals in the Vancouver riding of Steveston-Richmond
East have found themselves with a new candidate but a local riding
association without an executive.
Members of the riding association executive have stepped down in
protest over Joe Peschisolido’s acclamation Tuesday night because the
party had shut out former Liberal candidate Wendy Yuan from seeking
the nomination.
Yuan, an unsuccessful Liberal candidate in 2008 and 2011, had not made
it through the candidate-screening process, and accused the party of
putting its thumb on the scale in favour of Joe Peschisolido, a former
Liberal MP for Richmond. She earlier produced an affidavit claiming
former Cabinet Minister Raymond Chan intended to make sure she
couldn’t run — Chan later denied that and the party says she was
rejected over the fact-checking of her resumé.
A statement put out by the Liberal Party said her “application did not
pass through our review process successfully.”
A Liberal Party source says she failed to meet the background checks
and that she “misrepresented some elements of her resumé – that raised
a flag.”
“We have a more rigorous process this time,” the source said, “and we
do more checks on everything.”
Yuan said the party needs to “walk the walk” on open nominations and
actually rebuild the party from the grassroots.
“It’s very disappointing and it’s quite beyond me. I signed up 3,000
members and they were not able to vote,” she said.
Riding President Peter Xie, a Liberal for some 15 years, was among
those who stepped down in protest.
“It’s just such a letdown,” he said. “From high-hopes to what
happened, it’s quite a disappointment.”
Xie says he’s still receiving emails from members complaining they
couldn’t get to the nomination meeting because it was called on short
notice and the location was too remote.
He and another member of the executive also complained about how long
it took to get a meeting, noting the Conservative has had lots of time
in the riding and the Liberals missed key cultural and community
events like Chinese New Year in February.
In a letter addressed to Liberal BC president Braeden Caley that was
circulated to media after the contest, party membership chairman – as
well as former campaign manager for Yuan – Michael Hillman called the
decision to leave her out of the nomination race “unfathomable.”
Peschisolido has been involved in politics for a long time — he ran
several times in the 1990s for the Reform Party in Southern Ontario,
and was originally elected as a Canadian Alliance MP for Richmond in
2000, only to later cross the floor to the Liberals.
Peschisolido then lost the Richmond-Centre Liberal riding nomination
to Raymond Chan, who won the seat in 2004 and 2006.
Peschisolido is facing-off against Conservative contender Kenny Chiu,
a software engineer and school-board trustee, and Scott Stewart for
the NDP, a retired police officer and former provincial NDP candidate.
