Canada geese

We gave them something to squawk about

Mississauga News
Saturday, October 6, 2007

Many New Brunswick farmers are upset about the increasing number of Canada geese there, more than a decade after the birds were brought to the Maritimes province from Mississauga for hunting.

In the 1990s, Frank McKenna’s Liberal government brought 3,500 Canada geese to New Brunswick from Mississauga and surrounding areas, where we didn't want them.

Now dairy farmer Winston Jones of Riverview says he hates to see geese landing on his fields.

“They eat so much grass,” Jones told the CBC. “They continuously eat, and if there’s 500 of them around, it’s like having 10 or 15 extra cows. We’re growing grass to feed cows, not to feed geese.”

Kevin McAloney of the Canadian Wildlife Services told the CBC they’re getting more and more complaints about the geese.

New Brunswickers lament glut of geese

Many New Brunswickers are complaining about an increased Canada goose population, more than a decade after some of the birds were brought into the province to benefit hunters.

Winston Jones of Riverview said 10 years ago, he was pleased to see a pair of the birds make their home on the river that flows by his dairy farm. Little did he know he would one day cringe at the sight of more geese landing on his fields.

"They eat so much grass," Jones said Wednesday. "They continuously eat, and if there's 500 of them around, it's like having 10 or 15 extra cows.

"We're growing grass to feed cows, not to feed geese."

Frank McKenna's Liberal government brought 3,500 Canada geese from Toronto and Mississauga, which didn't want them, to New Brunswick in the 1990s.

Kevin McAloney of the Canadian Wildlife Services said they're getting more and more complaints about the geese. Farmers and municipalities are worried about the impact on water supplies and airports, McAloney said.

The wildlife service responded by giving hunters a 10-day extra season to shoot Canada geese earlier this month, he said.

The extra season has only been a partial success because hunting is not allowed in most municipalities, McAloney said.

"You know it's not a cure-all, because a large number of these resident geese are within municipal limits," McAloney said. "If you go around the traffic circle in Moncton, they breed there. It doesn't matter when you have [an extra] hunting season. A lot of those birds will never see a hunter."

Jones said his land is within the town limits of Riverview, so he's hoping the town will change its bylaw to allow hunters to get rid of some of the geese.

The Goose that Didn't Matter

I guess at least eight hundred ducks have fallen to my gun,
And Charlie's always been right there retrieving every one.
But somehow, try as we might,no matter what our ruse,
We failed, that old Black Lab and I, to ever get a goose.

The vet had said it must be done, so bring him in on Monday.
His eyesight's weak and he's too old to brave the Bay of Fundy.
I'd picked him from the litter even though his was the runt.
And now fourteen years later, this would be our final hunt.

And so I asked a friend that night, who grew some corn and barley
if I could hunt his field next day, to get a goose for Charlie.
No bird came to our blind, alas, because of bluebird weather,
But still we enjoyed the day, because we were together,

While driving home with heavy heart, I rubbed the grizzled head,
And looking in those big brown eyes, to him, I softly said,
"You know a man can only do the best that he is able,
It don't appear there'll be a roasted honker on our table,
But Charlie, we'll have porkchops, since that is your favourite treat,
And you'll not just have one or two, but all that you can eat"

And so that night, by lantern light, we shared our final meal,
I talked to him of days gone by, of Mallards, Scaup and Teal,
Old Charlie wagged his tail with joy, beside his heaping platter,
And missing from the menu was, a goose - that didn't matter.
