NB Liberals announce 21 candidates ready to run in the next election

FREDERICTON (February 2nd) – Today, the New Brunswick Liberals announced that there are currently 21 nominated candidates ready to run in the 2024 election. Six recently nominated candidates join the 15 incumbent MLAs to form the Liberal team ready to bring their vision to New Brunswickers. Susan Holt, Leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Party will host her nomination in Fredericton South-Silverwood in the coming months.

“We are feeling the momentum,” says Holt. “This incredible group of New Brunswickers spent their lives working to make our province even better and I’m honoured to have them next to me as we head into an election. It really feels like New Brunswickers are ready for change. They are ready for a government that brings them hope, one they can trust to have their backs.”

The party has also nominated six new candidates – David Hickey, Patty Borthwick, Dave Gouthro, Claire Johnson, Luke Randall, and Tanya Whitney – who will also be working hard to earn the trust of the people in their ridings when New Brunswickers head to the polls.

May 11th, 2024 (Hampton-Fundy-St Martins) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Hampton-Fundy-St Martins today to nominate John Herron as their candidate for the next provincial election.

As the event began, surrounded by local supporters, caucus members, and nominated candidates, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “The Higgs’ government only cares about the bottom line while New Brunswickers’ debt is growing. Balance is missing. We can balance a budget and reduce the debt while at the same time making smart investments in the future.”

Hampton-Fundy-St Martins is the seventeenth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.

John is a passionate New Brunswicker with a demonstrated commitment to public service. John is the current President & CEO of the New Brunswick Business Council. Over his career, John has held leadership roles in the energy sector, regulatory affairs, and public policy development. From 1997-2004, John served as a Member of Parliament, representing the constituency of Fundy Royal which included every region of the new Provincial riding of Hampton-Fundy-St. Martins. John is a long-time resident of Bloomfield, Kings County, with his wife Heather Libbey, and son Patrick and daughter Rosemary.

When addressing the crowd, Herron said, “We are here together today united in common cause representing all the communities of this beautiful part of New Brunswick and diverse riding of Hampton-Fundy-St. Martins, because we share a common belief in what this riding is and a common vision of what its future could be. Throughout the province, Susan Holt’s team is offering and building solutions to address affordability, housing, innovative solutions for health care through collaborative medicine, and an understanding of the need for our businesses to be prosperous, that our private sector needs to be successful to pay for our collective social progress. Susan has built a team that is poised to provide that credible drama-free management of the province’s affairs that we deserve.”

In closing the event, Holt said “New Brunswickers deserve better than one person trying to do it all. That’s why it has been important to me to recruit people that know and care for their communities, deeply. We are building a team of experts across many fields: the arts, culture, education, technology, energy, local governance, health care, economic development, and more, we are growing the team. I’m thrilled to have John join us with his extensive background and experience, he has demonstrated his ability to bring people together to cooperate and collaborate, this is exactly how a Holt government will lead New Brunswick: cooperatively and collaboratively. This isn’t a time to be red, blue, orange, or green. We need to change this riding, we need to get John Herron elected and we need to change this government.”

NB Liberals nominate Joni Leger in Fredericton Lincoln

July 3, 2024News

July 3, 2024 (Fredericton) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Fredericton Lincoln last night to nominate Joni Leger as their candidate for the next provincial election.

As the event began, Leader of the NB Liberal Party Susan Holt said “I’m hearing the same two things everywhere I go – that people are feeling left out of decision-making and that Premier Higgs has to go. I have heard that most recently from a family doctor who told me that his own family doesn’t have access to a doctor, nor do his neighbours. He was concerned about people trying to access primary care and frustrated that this government hasn’t engaged with those who understand the challenges on the ground. A Holt government will deliver bold transformation in healthcare by listening to the experts, making data-informed decisions, and caring for those who are caring for us.”

Fredericton Lincoln is the twenty-third riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.

Joni Leger has spent the last ten years working in research and innovation with post-secondary institutions, researchers, industry, and government partners to support economic growth in New Brunswick. Before working in research and innovation, Joni spent ten years working in non-profit organizations developing and delivering programs and services for people navigating social, economic, and interpersonal challenges, with a particular focus on supporting women and girls.

When addressing the crowd, Leger said, “I’m a communicator and collaborator who’s always looking for connections and solutions. I want to figure out where the barriers are, and then take them out of the way so that we can do the job we need to do. I truly believe that there is always something to learn and there is always something to contribute. I can’t wait to do that while working together with this team when Susan is our Premier.”

“I’m thrilled to be adding Joni to our incredible team,” said Holt while closing the event. “From the first time I met her, Joni impressed me with her curiosity. I saw a spark in Joni’s eyes – a passion for the work of public service, of someone wanting to put in the work. I know that she will be an incredible representative for the people of Fredericton Lincoln.”

New Brunswickers are frustrated and struggling to make ends meet. People are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries, and put gas in the car, and this government just isn’t listening. We need a government that will work together to ensure we can make life affordable, by introducing a rent cap, by taking the provincial tax off of power bills, and to find innovative solutions in local communities. Our municipal leaders know their communities best, their citizens best, and the needs of each unique region.”

Quispamsis is the twenty-second riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.

Aaron Kennedy is currently the acting Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Quispamsis. He has been an employee of the town since 2011. He was also the chair of the 2016 TELUS Cup host organizing committee, which generated a then-record $175,000 Legacy Fund, co-chair of Rogers Hometown Hockey in Saint John in October 2016, co-chair of the successful bid committee for the 2018 Canada 55+ Games, chair of the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, and chair of the 2023 Para Hockey Cup. Aaron was also involved with the bid committee for Les Jeux de l’Acadie, which were held in the region in 2022. He was named Discover Saint John Sport Planner of the Year in 2017.

When addressing the crowd, Kennedy said, “I’m proud to be joining this team, and I’m excited torepresent the people of Quispamsis. We are ready to replace what is left of the Progressive Conservative party with a government who will listen to New Brunswickers and govern as a collective team putting the needs of our citizens first.

“I am thrilled to be adding Aaron to our team,” said Holt while closing the event. “He brings with him a wealth of community and managerial experience, and is a strong advocate for the people of Quispamsis, which he will continue to be as the next MLA for Quispamsis.”

As the event began, surrounded by a crowd of more than 100 including Liberal candidates and local supporters, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “Right now, we have a Premier who prioritizes the bankers in New York rather than the people of New Brunswick. We need to be able to balance budgets, while also investing for the future. A Holt government will do exactly that.”

Troy Lyons grew up living in a coastal community and has lived and worked in Saint Croix for over 20 years. He has a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, a Masters of Science and has spent time conducting studies at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Troy has over 30 years of experience in project management and has worked in the agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture and the environmental sectors. For the last 16 years he has worked in the provincial Department of Environment and Local Government.

When addressing the crowd, Lyons said, “I want to be your next MLA so I can be the voice of the people and speak loudly for you in Fredericton. We have major issues that need to be addressed, especially timely access to quality health care, available and affordable housing, and tackling the growing crisis with homelessness. A vote for me is a voice for you.”

In closing the event, Holt said, “I want to thank both candidates for coming forward, Jamie and Troy. We are stronger together and it is as a strong, united team that we will earn the trust of New Brunswickers. No matter where you live, no matter what language you speak and no matter who you love, every voice deserves to be heard.”

NB Liberals nominate Alyson Townsend in Rothesay

March 14, 2024 (Rothesay) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Rothesay this evening to nominate Alyson Townsend as their candidate for the next provincial election.

As the event began, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “Alyson has been a champion for her community for years now and wants to continue to serve. We are thrilled to be adding someone with so much leadership experience to our team.”

Rothesay is the tenth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next election. With an impressive background boasting two decades of senior-level corporate experience, Alyson brings a wealth of leadership skills and a passion for fostering healthy workplaces to the team. Her dedication to progressive change and community involvement is evident through her extensive volunteer work with organizations including the YMCA, Family Plus, and 100 Women Who Care.

Following the convention, Townsend said “I am very excited to join this team. I want to be part of the change that is coming. We are all tired of the negativity so let’s try positivity. Let’s change healthcare and long-term care in this province. Let’s change education and give it the priority it deserves. One in every four children in Saint John live in poverty and those numbers keep increasing. It’s time to deal with these serious issues.”

In closing the event, Holt said, “We keep hearing there is too much drama in the Legislature, in government and in the Premier’s office, and people tell me they want an adult in the room. We are adults, and we will bring level-headed, respectful leadership to the Legislature, to our hard working civil service, to the Premier’s office, and to the people of New Brunswick.”

NB Liberals nominate Alexandre Cédric Doucet in Moncton East

February 22 (Moncton) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Moncton East this evening to nominate Alexandre Cédric Doucet as their candidate for the next provincial election.

As the event began, Leader of the Liberal Party Susan Holt said “If there is one thing we know it is that we cannot keep going in the direction we are going. It is going to take a team to turn this province around, not one person. That is why I am excited to have Alexandre’s voice to represent Moncton East.”

Moncton East is the eighth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next election. Alexandre Cédric Doucet is a lawyer by trade and past president of La Société de l’Acadie du Nouveau-Brunswick. He is passionate about ensuring we get New Brunswick back on track, specifically in addressing the key challenges we’re facing on housing, cost of living, and supporting seniors.

Following the win, Doucet said “Being a Liberal means ensuring all New Brunswickers have equal opportunity and access to succeed, regardless of age, heritage, language or sexual orientation.”

In closing the event, surrounded by a number of current Liberal MLAs and recently nominated candidates, Holt said, “New Brunswickers deserve a team of people who are supporting them from corner to corner to corner in this province. Not just one man in one office in Fredericton who makes all of the decisions. They deserve a team that works together. I am so proud to have the team that we do, and to be adding Alexandre to that group today.”

“We are laser focussed on the year ahead and continue to build a team of hard working New Brunswickers who are dedicated to solving the challenges we’re facing in our province,” said Liberal Leader Susan Holt. “David Alston exemplifies the kind of experienced, community-minded leaders we need to form a Holt-led Liberal government in 2024.”

Saint John East is the seventh riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next election. David Alston has always been committed to building a better Saint John. He has focused on ending generational poverty in Saint John as past co-chair of LivingSJ, serving on the Board of Directors of the regional United Way, and volunteering with the Business Community Anti-Poverty Initiative. When addressing the crowd, David said “I will work with the constituents of Saint John East to advance the priorities of the riding and put government to work in innovative ways that address the challenges we collectively face, particularly regarding health care, affordability and housing. We need to have tangible solutions to the complex problems we are facing,” said Alston. “Taking steps such as creating more team-based community health centers, removing the provincial tax on electricity bills and allocating resources for more renovations and building of social housing are concrete steps we can take to relieve the pressure New Brunswickers face every day.”

The Liberal Party of New Brunswick will continue to hold nominating conventions to name candidates in the coming weeks.

Holt noted that she is excited to welcome David to the Liberal team. “I’m thrilled to have David join our dynamic team of candidates and incumbents. His community involvement, business and entrepreneurial background and deep roots in the community will serve the people of Saint John East, and New Brunswickers very well.”

NB Liberals nominate Luke Randall in Fredericton North

FREDERICTON (January 27, 2024) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Fredericton North this past Saturday to nominate the riding’s official candidate for the next provincial election.

In front of an animated crowd, Leader Susan Holt said, “New Brunswickers are facing serious challenges like affordability, finding a family doctor or a daycare space, and it’s clear that our province needs new leadership.”

Fredericton North is the fifth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nomination contest leading up to the next election. Two candidates were vying to carry the Liberal banner: local business owner Luke Randall and longtime community supporter and former city fire captain Ken Pike.

NB Liberals nominate Claire Johnson in Moncton South

NOVEMBER 27 (Moncton) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Moncton South this weekend to nominate Claire Johnson as their candidate for Moncton South in the next provincial election.

Kicking off the event, Liberal Leader Susan Holt stressed that now more than ever “New Brunswickers deserve a government that is going to listen to them and that is going to care about them.”

Claire Johnson, a dietitian and assistant professor at Universite de Moncton, is a well-known advocate who is passionate about families, community connection, active living, and fair access to healthcare. Through her work, she has extensive experience using data to guide policy decisions.

“As a dietitian by training, food security, prevention, and well-being are very important to me. It is unacceptable that people go hungry in Moncton South. We need to figure out a way to make food affordable and accessible to all. I will fight for a universal publicly funded breakfast and lunch program for all students in every single school in New Brunswick,” said Johnson during the event.

Claire joins confirmed candidates David Hickey, Patty Borthwick, and Dave Gouthro who have been nominated recently at local Liberal Association conventions.

“I have watched Claire’s drive in this political process and have been so in awe of her energy and her attitude. New Brunswickers deserve a team of people who are supporting them from corner to corner to corner in this province. Not just one man in one office in Fredericton who makes all of the decisions. They deserve a team that works together and I am so proud to have the team that we do, and to be adding Claire to that group today,” said Holt.

The New Brunswick Liberal Party will continue to hold nominating conventions to name candidates over the coming months.

NB Liberals nominate Dave Gouthro in Albert-Riverview

November 21, 2023 (HOPEWELL CAPE) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Albert-Riverview last night to nominate their candidate for the next provincial election.

In remarks kicking off the event, Liberal Leader Susan Holt said, “I am beyond thrilled to welcome Dave to our dynamic team of individuals who have chosen to step up and put their names forward to represent and advocate for their friends, neighbours, and communities.”

Albert-Riverview is the third riding where the Liberal Party has held a nominating convention to select their candidate leading up to the next election.

Dave Gouthro operates the National Tire Distributors located in Moncton. He is a fierce advocate of community engagement and involvement. He and his husband Michael have a 16 year old son, Keenan.

During the event, Gouthro spoke passionately about why he made the decision to run. “A community that advocates together, succeeds together. We have serious challenges in rural NB, particularly related to access to quality health care and schools struggling to secure adequate staffing and resources. I am committed to being a strong voice for our community, to ensure rural issues are heard loud and clear in Fredericton.

The New Brunswick Liberal Party will continue to hold nominating conventions to choose candidates over the coming weeks. Holt said she was thrilled by the turnout and excited to welcome Gouthro to the Liberal team.

NB Liberals nominate local advocate Patty Borthwick in Fundy-The Isles-Saint John Lorneville

Liberals gathered in the riding of Fundy-The Isles-Saint John Lorneville last night to nominate their candidate for the next provincial election.

In remarks kicking off the event, Leader Susan Holt stressed that as New Brunswickers are facing challenges like finding a family doctor or a daycare space, it’s clear that the province needs new leadership.

Fundy-The Isles-Saint John Lorneville is the second riding where the Liberal Party has held a nominating convention to select their candidate leading up to the next election. Patty Borthwick is a local advocate known for her leadership in the development of Hillary’s Law in honour of her daughter, which enacted a number of changes to the Coroner’s Act, including that which states that any death in a psychiatric facility will be subject to an automatic coroner’s inquest unless the death is determined to be from natural causes.

During the event, Borthwick spoke passionately about why she made the decision to run. “I love where we live, this is the best province in the country. We need affordable housing, but more than that we need affordable and available housing. We need to make sure our friends and neighbours aren’t forced to choose between filling up their vehicles or paying for food to feed their family or for life saving medications because of the soaring cost of living. We need more doctors, more nurses and more support for mental health services and addiction services. I will work hard everyday to be a strong voice for the constituents of Fundy-The Isles-Saint John Lorneville.”

The New Brunswick Liberal Party will continue to hold nominating conventions to choose candidates over the coming weeks. Holt said she was thrilled by the turnout and excited to welcome Borthwick to the Liberal team. “Blaine Higgs needs to be replaced,” she said. “New Brunswick deserves to be governed by a team of people who will listen to them.”

Higgs has been our premier for going on 6 years, he has been an MLA
for a decade plus including Finance Minister, he was worked in big
business. But I think going forward he should listen to his critics on
these boards, after all, they have a vast experience on large issues
such as healthcare, education, housing, etc. because they post on
here. I mean, it only makes sense.

Higgs really should. The posts provide valuable feedback in real time
on what issues matter most to voters, and where the government is
doing well according to voters and where they need to improve.

Hey, here is one now, that did not take long. Tell us all how to fix
all our problems, even if they countrywide. The country/province
awaits.

Gabriel Boucher

Getting rid of Higgs would be a start. He did say that he wouldn't put
a cap on rent because it's bad for business, and now he's blaming
homelessness on drug addiction. He's the one creating these issues in
the first place.

Bobby Richards

Higgs was a middle level manager. Irving is a "fire if if don't
comply" mentality. The refinery had to give $1500 to everyone to work
their shut down this fall. And now they are for sale.

Bobby Richards

If the problems are country wide then we should ignore them here in
NB. That makes sense Ron

Anderson Mason won't run for Higgs in 2024 in Fundy Isles Saint John.
She won the last 2 elections by a landslide but isn't running this
year. It will go liberal again like it was for 40 years.

The vast majority of social media posts are negative, so the value
would be a distortion of reality.

Le Wier

Social media is where people meet now to talk and share. the coffee
shop so to speak. Why else would politicians be on social media?

Bobby Richards
Reply to MR Cain
And that's why good people will not run for govt

MR Cain
Reply to Le Wier
Is this not a comment section where people are posting? Hopefully the
politicians are not making decisions based upon social media posts.

Le Wier
Reply to MR Cain
One would hope, but it seems like one of the few places nowadays to
meet, communicate, and discuss. I am thinking more about Facebook,
Twitter etc. Political parties and politicians have these social media
accounts to meet their voters without having to actually meet
physically with their voters. It’s an easy way to reach a vast number
of voters at one time and get feedback. It has proven especially
effective with young voters. Long gone are the days of stopping to
chat with your MLA downtown or their office. Most have an assistant
that answers the phone for them a few hours a week, and it is the
assistant that the voter/constituent communicates with. It is the MLAs
assistant that decides if the constituent/voter concerns or issues are
worthwhile to pass on to the MLA. It is a rarity if the MLA will speak
to a constituent now.

We did have a cap, and we have rent controls in place. Drug addiction
is part of the reason for homelessness, of course our PM is a big part
of it also.
