NB Liberals announce 21 candidates ready to run in the next election
FREDERICTON (February 2nd) – Today, the New Brunswick Liberals announced that there are currently 21 nominated candidates ready to run in the 2024 election. Six recently nominated candidates join the 15 incumbent MLAs to form the Liberal team ready to bring their vision to New Brunswickers. Susan Holt, Leader of the New Brunswick Liberal Party will host her nomination in Fredericton South-Silverwood in the coming months.
“We are feeling the momentum,” says Holt. “This incredible group of New Brunswickers spent their lives working to make our province even better and I’m honoured to have them next to me as we head into an election. It really feels like New Brunswickers are ready for change. They are ready for a government that brings them hope, one they can trust to have their backs.”
The incumbent candidates, appointed last Fall when Premier Higgs was threatening to call an election, are all sitting Members of the Legislature who have been proudly serving their communities across the province for several years. The party has also nominated six new candidates – David Hickey, Patty Borthwick, Dave Gouthro, Claire Johnson, Luke Randall, and Tanya Whitney – who will also be working hard to earn the trust of the people in their ridings when New Brunswickers head to the polls.
“The support and excitement we’re feeling as we nominate candidates across the province is incredible,” says NB Liberal Association Executive Director Hannah Fulton Johnston. “We’re seeing great crowds at our events, bringing in lots of donations, members are engaged, and we are hearing from New Brunswickers everyday that they are ready for new leadership.”
The NB Liberal Association will continue to hold nominating conventions to add more candidates to the team over the coming months. See the attached Appendix for a full list of current candidates.

NB Liberals nominate John Herron in Hampton-Fundy-St Martins
May 11th, 2024 (Hampton-Fundy-St Martins) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Hampton-Fundy-St Martins today to nominate John Herron as their candidate for the next provincial election.
As the event began, surrounded by local supporters, caucus members, and nominated candidates, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “The Higgs’ government only cares about the bottom line while New Brunswickers’ debt is growing. Balance is missing. We can balance a budget and reduce the debt while at the same time making smart investments in the future.”
Hampton-Fundy-St Martins is the seventeenth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.
John is a passionate New Brunswicker with a demonstrated commitment to public service. John is the current President & CEO of the New Brunswick Business Council. Over his career, John has held leadership roles in the energy sector, regulatory affairs, and public policy development. From 1997-2004, John served as a Member of Parliament, representing the constituency of Fundy Royal which included every region of the new Provincial riding of Hampton-Fundy-St. Martins. John is a long-time resident of Bloomfield, Kings County, with his wife Heather Libbey, and son Patrick and daughter Rosemary.
When addressing the crowd, Herron said, “We are here together today united in common cause representing all the communities of this beautiful part of New Brunswick and diverse riding of Hampton-Fundy-St. Martins, because we share a common belief in what this riding is and a common vision of what its future could be. NB Liberals nominate Stephen Horsman in Oromocto Sunbury
May 17th, 2024 (Oromocto Sunbury) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Oromocto Sunbury Thursday evening to nominate Stephen Horsman as their candidate for the next provincial election.
As the event began, surrounded by local supporters, caucus members, and nominated candidates, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “People want a government that will balance their needs with the needs of the debt collectors. Our team is committed to delivering balanced budgets and making sure you have access to the care you need. I know we are gaining a team member who will work his tail off. Stephen cares deeply for the people he represents and will work tirelessly for them.”
Oromocto Sunbury is the eighteenth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.
Stephen Horsman is a dedicated community member with extensive experience in provincial politics, having served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the riding of Fredericton North from 2014 until 2020. During his time in government, Stephen demonstrated leadership as a Minister for a number of portfolios, including Justice, Public Safety, Military Affairs, Solicitor General, and Social Development, as well as acting as Deputy Premier. Stephen worked as a Police Officer with the Fredericton City Police for more than 20 years and has also spent time working as a supply teacher in the Fredericton and Oromocto areas. He and his wife Ann Kenney have two children, Katherine and Gibson, and two grandchildren with a third on the way.

Joni Leger has spent the last ten years working in research and innovation with post-secondary institutions, researchers, industry, and government partners to support economic growth in New Brunswick. Before working in research and innovation, Joni spent ten years working in non-profit organizations developing and delivering programs and services for people navigating social, economic, and interpersonal challenges, with a particular focus on supporting women and girls.

As the event began, surrounded by local supporters including the town’s Mayor and Deputy Mayor who spoke on Aaron’s behalf, caucus members, former MLAs, and nominated candidates, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “Higgs has got to go. New Brunswickers are frustrated and struggling to make ends meet. People are struggling to pay rent, buy groceries, and put gas in the car, and this government just isn’t listening. We need a government that will work together to ensure we can make life affordable, by introducing a rent cap, by taking the provincial tax off of power bills, and to find innovative solutions in local communities. Our municipal leaders know their communities best, their citizens best, and the needs of each unique region.”
Quispamsis is the twenty-second riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.
Aaron Kennedy is currently the acting Chief Administrative Officer for the Town of Quispamsis. He has been an employee of the town since 2011. Prior to his work in federal, provincial, and municipal governments, Aaron was an award-winning broadcaster and journalist. He was also the chair of the 2016 TELUS Cup host organizing committee, which generated a then-record $175,000 Legacy Fund, co-chair of Rogers Hometown Hockey in Saint John in October 2016, co-chair of the successful bid committee for the 2018 Canada 55+ Games, chair of the 2018 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, and chair of the 2023 Para Hockey Cup. Aaron was also involved with the bid committee for Les Jeux de l’Acadie, which were held in the region in 2022. He was named Discover Saint John Sport Planner of the Year in 2017.

Moncton Northwest is the twentieth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election. Two candidates were vying to carry the Liberal banner: Tania Sodhi and Monique LeBlanc. Tania Sodhi was declared the winner once all the votes were counted.
As a realtor working within the riding, Tania has developed a deep understanding of the housing market and the unique challenges faced by residents in Moncton Northwest. Her professional background equips her with the skills to navigate complex issues and advocate for policies that support affordable housing and sustainable community development. Tania’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts and Law. A proud mom to two young girls, Tania understands the importance of building a future that benefits families and communities.

Haute-Terres-Nepisiguit is the nineteenth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.
Luc is a graduate of the computer science program at CCNB Bathurst, following which he taught at CCNB Bathurst and Péninsule Acadienne for several years. He was General Manager of the Club plein air de Caraquet from 2017 to 2020, and has since been General Manager of the Coopérative de Paquetville. At the political level, Luc was Mayor of Paquetville from May 2016 to 2022, and was President of the Forum des maires de la Péninsule Acadienne in 2017-2018. He currently sits as councilor for the Municipalité des Hautes-Terres. Luc is an avid sportsman, and when he gets the chance, he enjoys mountain biking, golf, field hockey and fly fishing. When time permits, he loves to pass on his passions to children. He has coached soccer, mountain biking, and field hockey.

NB Liberals nominate Dr. John Dornan in Saint John Portland-Simonds
May 8th 2024 (Saint John) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Saint John Portland – Simonds to nominate Dr. John Dornan as their candidate for the next provincial election.

Dr. John Dornan has practiced medicine in New Brunswick since 1987 and has served in multiple leadership and educational activities since. A lifelong learner and educator, Dr. Dornan has taught students from the start of medical school to the completion of residencies in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine. He was a principle in the establishment of Dalhousie University’s first satellite Royal College residency. As a passionate supporter of collaborative primary care, and healthcare homes, as well as respectful, fruitful, and safe environments for nurses and teachers, he is excited to be a part of the path forward to serve New Brunswickers.

With an impressive background that showcases her fluency in both English and French and her rich Irish-Acadian heritage, Veronique Arsenault’s global travels and diverse experiences have only strengthened her resolve to serve her hometown. Veronique serves her community as an elected City Councilor, chairing the Corporate Services Standing Committee, championing a Mental Health Strategy for the community in partnership with the Anglophone North School District, and continuing to volunteer as a member of the Executive for Legion Branch #3.
Although Veronique is often known for being in front of the microphone, what is remarkable is that her time spent behind the scenes far outweighs her public contributions. In recognition, Veronique received the MYPIE Community Champion of the Year Award in 2009 from her peer professionals and area entrepreneurs for her outstanding advocacy for the Miramichi, as well as, Fisherman Pow Wow Award for outstanding contributions to the community in 2014, the Volunteer of the Year Award in 2016 from Volunteer Miramichi, Woman of Influence in 2016 from the Women’s Empowerment Network and finally the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in Feb 2023 for Outstanding contribution and service to the community through volunteerism.

NB Liberals nominate Mark Hambrook in Miramichi West
April 12th, 2024 (Miramichi West) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Miramichi West Thursday evening to nominate Mark Hambrook as their candidate for the next provincial election.
As the event began, surrounded by local supporters, caucus members, and nominated candidates, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “We are feeling a sense of change coming, everybody agrees that we can do better and New Brunswickers deserve better. I am thrilled that Mark Hambrook has joined our ever-growing team that will bring that needed change to our province. His deep community roots and dedication to serving his region will make him a wonderful representative for the people in Miramichi West.”
Miramichi West is the fourteenth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.
Mark Hambrook was born in Renous, attended Blackville High School and UNB, and now lives with his wife Barbara in Cassalis. He worked for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for 18 years, during which time, he received several recognition awards including the Deputy Minister’s Commendation Award for demonstrating excellence in leadership qualities, and the DFO Gulf Region Merit Award for improving community relations. Mark worked for the Miramichi Salmon Association for 25 years as Manager of the Miramichi Fish Hatchery and served several terms on their executive board as President.
Hambrook currently volunteers with several organizations such including the Atlantic Salmon Museum in Doaktown, the Miramichi Watershed Management Committee, the Miramichi Salmon Association and the Miramichi River Environmental Association.
When addressing the crowd, Hambrook said, “There are some big issues facing our province in affordability, health care and housing. A Liberal government will work hard to make NB a better place to live and work by tackling these issues and others, with solutions that are provided from listening to people. I look forward to becoming part of that team.”

NB Liberals nominate Lyne Chantal Boudreau in Champdoré-Irishtown
April 9th, 2024 (Champdoré-Irishtown) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Champdoré-Irishtown Monday evening to nominate Lyne Chantal Boudreau as their candidate for the next provincial election.
As the event began, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “I’m so excited to welcome Lyne to our team. She brings with her a wealth of experience having worked in the public school system for 20 years as a resource teacher and school principal before earning her doctorate in education.”
Champdoré-Irishtown is the twelfth riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election.
Lyne Chantal Boudreau has been a professor of administration at the Université de Moncton since 2017. She is known for her community involvement, providing leadership from an inclusive perspective for important social causes such as social justice, equity, the establishment of environments of respect and consent, and the development of initiatives to counter family and domestic violence. She owns a social enterprise specializing in fashion which donates a percentage of net profits to counter domestic and family violence, and is co-owner of a non-profit organization offering training on consent and healthy relationships in all environments. For Lyne Chantal, education symbolizes the key to a society that is free, respectful, and committed to its development.
When addressing the crowd, Boudreau said, “I encourage others to join me in choosing the values of the Liberal Party to support people from all regions of our province. Let’s be that inclusive society that listens to its people. March 23 (Miramichi) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Miramichi Bay-Neguac Saturday to nominate Sam Johnston as their candidate for the next provincial election.

NB Liberals nominate Troy Lyons in Saint Croix
March 17, 2024 (Saint Croix) – Liberals gathered in the riding of Saint Croix Saturday morning to nominate Troy Lyons as their candidate for the next provincial election.
As the event began, Leader of the Liberal Party of New Brunswick Susan Holt said “It will take a strong team to transform our province. We are building that team, candidate by candidate, and together, we will bring the change that New Brunswick so desperately needs.”
Saint Croix is the eleventh riding where the Liberal Party is holding a nominating convention leading up to the next provincial election. Two candidates were vying to carry the Liberal banner: Troy Lyons and Jamie Hirtle. Troy Lyons was declared the winner once all the votes were counted. Troy Lyons grew up living in a coastal community and has lived and worked in Saint Croix for over 20 years. He has a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture, a Masters of Science and has spent time conducting studies at the St. Andrews Biological Station. Troy has over 30 years of experience in project management and has worked in the agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture and the environmental sectors. For the last 16 years he has worked in the provincial Department of Environment and Local Government.
When addressing the crowd, Lyons said, “I want to be your next MLA so I can be the voice of the people and speak loudly for you in Fredericton. We have major issues that need to be addressed, especially timely access to quality health care, available and affordable housing, and tackling the growing crisis with homelessness. A vote for me is a voice for you.”

Over the past 30 years, Chris Duffie has built his company, Terra Consultants, into a thriving information technology business. He owned and operated the Halifax Mac Store, becoming one of the largest Apple dealers in Atlantic Canada. Chris and his wife Amanda have been married for 30 years and have two adult children. He is an avid snowmobiler, a dedicated community volunteer and enjoys attending and supporting organizations all across the riding.

Liberals gathered in the riding of Fundy-The Isles-Saint John Lorneville last night to nominate their candidate for the next provincial election.
In remarks kicking off the event, Leader Susan Holt stressed that as New Brunswickers are facing challenges like finding a family doctor or a daycare space, it’s clear that the province needs new leadership.
Fundy-The Isles-Saint John Lorneville is the second riding where the Liberal Party has held a nominating convention to select their candidate leading up to the next election. Patty Borthwick is a local advocate known for her leadership in the development of Hillary’s Law in honour of her daughter, which enacted a number of changes to the Coroner’s Act, including that which states that any death in a psychiatric facility will be subject to an automatic coroner’s inquest unless the death is determined to be from natural causes.
During the event, Borthwick spoke passionately about why she made the decision to run. “I love where we live, this is the best province in the country. We need affordable housing, but more than that we need affordable and available housing. We need to make sure our friends and neighbours aren’t forced to choose between filling up their vehicles or paying for food to feed their family or for life saving medications because of the soaring cost of living. We need more doctors, more nurses and more support for mental health services and addiction services. I will work hard everyday to be a strong voice for the constituents of Fundy-The Isles-Saint John Lorneville.”

for a decade plus including Finance Minister, he was worked in big
business. But I think going forward he should listen to his critics on
these boards, after all, they have a vast experience on large issues

Getting rid of Higgs would be a start. He did say that he wouldn't put
a cap on rent because it's bad for business, and now he's blaming
homelessness on drug addiction. He's the one creating these issues in

One would hope, but it seems like one of the few places nowadays to
meet, communicate, and discuss. I am thinking more about Facebook,
Twitter etc. Political parties and politicians have these social media
accounts to meet their voters without having to actually meet
physically with their voters. It’s an easy way to reach a vast number
of voters at one time and get feedback. It has proven especially
effective with young voters. Long gone are the days of stopping to
chat with your MLA downtown or their office. Most have an assistant
that answers the phone for them a few hours a week, and it is the
assistant that the voter/constituent communicates with. It is the MLAs
assistant that decides if the constituent/voter concerns or issues are
worthwhile to pass on to the MLA. It is a rarity if the MLA will speak
to a constituent now.

is part of the reason for homelessness, of course our PM is a big part
