Duhaime: 'If we're not in the National Assembly, then we'll be on the street'

The leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec says voters will be disenfranchised if popular support doesn't translate into seats.

QUEBEC CITY — Éric Duhaime straps the harness on his pit bull-Labrador mix, Mia, and attaches the leash to his belt.

As he exits his campaign bus, a group of roughly 30 supporters wearing athleisure cheers him on as he approaches the running track in the battlegrounds park of the Plains of Abraham.

It’s a chilly 7 C, and Duhaime maintains a brisk five-minute-per-kilometre pace over three kilometres as he chats with party activists.

Momentum appears to be on the side of his Conservative Party of Quebec, with the favourable polls published in the morning showing a five-percentage-point lead over the Coalition Avenir Québec in the riding of Beauce-Nord, and the party behind by one point in the riding of Beauce-Sud.

However, while Duhaime appears to have the momentum in the Quebec City and Beauce region, he is running against the wind if he hopes to translate that support into actual seats.

Speaking to reporters Thursday at a campaign stop in Portneuf, west of Quebec City, Duhaime said he knows his party is in many tight races, but because his voters skew younger, they are less likely to vote than supporters of the CAQ.

“It’s important for us to get seats,” Duhaime said. “But there is a risk that there will be a significant electoral distortion on Monday night. We want to tell the young people out there to ask their parents and grandparents to vote with them and to vote for the future.”

The CAQ is polling around the same level as it was in the last election, but is projected to win an even bigger majority, while Duhaime fears his party could earn close to 20 per cent of the votes and yet win no seats in the National Assembly.

Duhaime is pulling all the stops to push party supporters to go out and vote.

At rallies, he’s telling them to babysit for others who need childcare so they can go vote, and to drive those with mobility issues to the polls on Monday.

While he’s buoyed by the high participation rate in the advance polls, particularly in areas where his support is strongest, Duhaime is taking nothing for granted.

If his party is shut out on election day, it will result in many people being disenfranchised, he said.

“If we’re not in the National Assembly, then we’ll be on the street,” Duhaime said. “As a people, we should have this opposition in the assembly and have our debate in a democratic and appropriate way, but what happened in the last few years is that a lot of people went into the streets and that’s how they voiced their opposition.”

Duhaime welcomed the news that Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said Thursday that the Conservative leader should have a seat at the assembly.

“I think that was gracious of him, and I want to commend him for that,” he said. “I also want to commend different people in the media who have come out in the last few days who might disagree with my ideas but agree that the Conservative voice needs to be heard on Oct. 3.”

Duhaime, who gained popularity by opposing COVID-19 health restrictions, was in friendly territory Thursday, speaking to Radio X morning host Dominic Maurais and repeating the message that his supporters need to show up en masse to vote.

He also went on the attack, saying the CAQ is giving Quebec a bad name internationally by making disparaging remarks about immigrants.

Duhaime said incumbent immigration minister Jean Boulet should be dropped as a candidate after his anti-immigration remarks made headlines.

“Mr. Boulet is disqualified,” he said. “He should not be on the ballot.”

Duhaime said Legault should dump Boulet for saying 80 per cent of immigrants don’t speak French, don’t work and don’t adhere to Quebec values.

The comments came to light on Wednesday, a week after Boulet made them during an all-candidates debate in Trois-Rivières.

While Legault said the comments “disqualified” Boulet from being immigration minister, Duhaime said he should not be permitted to run as an MNA at all.

“What message is (Legault) trying to send — his comments are not acceptable for a minister, but they’re totally acceptable for a candidate of the CAQ and an MNA for Trois-Rivières? That argument makes no sense.

“Mr. Legault will have to sit down with Mr. Boulet and make a decision.”

The Conservative leader said Boulet’s comments have no place in an electoral campaign.

“I don’t like to call people racist,” he said. “I won’t accuse him of being a racist, but his comments are so out of place that it disqualifies him.”

Duhaime added he’s concerned about Legault’s repeated comments about immigration, the most recent coming Wednesday, when he said accepting more than 50,000 immigrants a year would be “suicidal for the Quebec nation.”

“I look in all the small villages — the immigrants who are there are like family,” Duhaime said. “The people from there will buy them winter coats. That’s how we Quebecers are, and François Legault is giving us an image as intolerant people, and he’s harming the province’s reputation.”

He said it’s clear Legault’s campaign is in disarray.

“Every day, he seems to be in a very bad mood,” Duhaime said. “Today he was in a very bad mood in Rouyn-Noranda, where he didn’t like to answer a reporter’s questions. He was very aggressive. That shows that Mr. Legault needs a much stronger opposition in the National Assembly. That man has been handling Quebec by decree for way too long. He doesn’t like to be contradicted, but that’s why democracy is useful.”

On another radio show, Duhaime said his party is set to make a final pitch to anglophones to abandon the Liberals and vote for the Conservatives.

He told CJAD 800 host Elias Makos that non-francophones are joining his movement and he hopes to pick up seats on the island of Montreal.

“A lot of non-francophones are getting in, and I’m happy about that,” Duhaime said. “We’ll be in the west end of Montreal on Saturday, in the Jacques-Cartier riding, and I will make a bilingual speech.”

Duhaime said the Liberals risk becoming a marginalized party, as they have polled poorly among francophone voters.

However, more recent polls place the Liberals second behind the CAQ, and the polling aggregate site Qc125.com predicts the party will form the official opposition.

Quebec Conservative Leader distancing himself from party official after claims about Indigenous genocide

The comments were made by the president of the party's policy commission

Conservative Party of Quebec Leader Éric Duhaime is distancing himself from a member of the party's executive branch after he published an opinion piece claiming there was no genocide against Indigenous people in Canada.

The party's policy commission president André Valiquette published the article in Québec Nouvelles last year, arguing Indigenous people largely benefited from the European colonization of their land.

"It is not racist to say that one civilization brings more than another," Valiquette wrote in the article.

"It was also Western civilization, that curiosity about others, that helped Indigenous people learn about their own history."

André Valiquette volunteers with the party's policy commission, a party spokesperson said. (The Conservative Party of Quebec)

When asked on Saturday if he agreed with what Valiquette wrote, Duhaime said he didn't.

"I don't share [those views], they don't represent the policies of the party," the leader said. "But he has a right to say it as a columnist."

Valiquette serves as the president of the party's political commission, according to its website. Press secretary Cédric Lapointe said Valiquette helps the party "on policies" as a volunteer, but wouldn't reveal the extent of his involvement in the official party line.

CBC News attempted to reach Valiquette multiple times, but he never responded. At a campaign event on Saturday in Montreal's West Island he also again refused to comment.

"He backed up his personal analysis on this issue, which should be encouraged in a free and democratic society," added Véronique Gagnon, the president of the party's communications commission, in an email.

Duhaime told reporters on Friday he was "too busy" to attend any commemorations for the second annual National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, not wanting to hold off meeting with the mayor of Quebec City with the election just days away.

It was declared a federal statutory holiday last year just days after the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation confirmed the discovery of roughly 200 potential burial sites, likely of children, on the site of a former residential school in Kamloops, B.C.

The Coalition Avenir Québec was the only party that attended a Truth and Reconciliation commemoration on Friday, when Leader François Legault visited the site of a former residential school in Saint-Marc-de-Figuery, Que., in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

Liberal party Leader Dominique Anglade said she would have gone to the march in Montreal, but was told organizers preferred not to have any candidates attending. Meanwhile Québec Solidaire co-spokesperson Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois said he wanted Indigenous voices be front and centre that day, while Parti Québécois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon said scheduling got in the way.

Duhaime has also said his party doesn't agree the day should be a statutory holiday in Quebec, making it the only major party in the election on board with the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ).

"We need to work, we can't take days off too often, we already have a lot of days off," Duhaime told reporters on Thursday.

François Therrien

Director of the COOP Saint-André and volunteer President of the Corporation des Loisirs de Saint-André, François Therrien is passionate about hunting, fishing and cryptocurrency.

Mr. Therrien finds the Quebec Conservative Party’s proposals on family and education very compelling, especially the policies of offering $200 per child to allow parents to choose the type of daycare that’s right for them, and of providing significant support to parents who wish to home school.

“The riding of Bonaventure is a large and beautiful region. We should have more local control over our own economic development and our health care and education needs. Decentralization would be good for us. This community knows its own needs and would really benefit from being more autonomous. The Conservative Party of Quebec is the only party proposing to give the regions more independence in their decision-making.”

Mr. Bouchard has worked as a paramedic for fifteen years. He also owns income properties and has run his own construction company, Construction PLB, for the past six years. The front-line medical worker is very concerned about the state of Quebec’s health care system, the critical labour shortage and the urgent need to reduce gasoline taxes.

“In accordance with the CPQ’s proposal, we absolutely must allow the private sector to contribute to the public health care system. As things stand right now, all Quebecers are paying the price. It does not make sense for a failing system to be collectively costing us $1 billion a week. As an ambulance driver, I experience highly aberrant patient care situations on a daily basis. The entire population deserves better than this, health care workers deserve better than this, and the only party with the potential to make real changes is the CPQ.”

Originally from Cap-aux-Meules, Evan Leblanc recently moved to Pointe-aux-Loups and works in the field of transportation. Distinguished by his analytical and empathetic spirit, he wishes to bring hope, freedom, and pragmatic solutions to his fellow citizens.

The values of freedom, transparency, respect, and autonomy espoused by the CPQ, as well as Éric Duhaime’s very human approach and ability to listen, have motivated Mr. Leblanc’s decision to actively enter politics. Although he is very pleased with the contribution of tourism to the economic vitality of his Island, Mr. Leblanc is concerned about the difficulties experienced by islanders in finding housing, and he laments the fact that residents do not have priority access to the ferry:

“Islanders are caught between a rock and a hard place, the economic vitality of our community thanks to tourism versus our struggles to find housing and to get ferry access. Many homes are being taken off the rental market to be offered for seasonal tourist rentals. The result is a severe housing shortage for residents, who, on top of this, are denied priority access to the ferry. This is unacceptable! We have to decentralize decision-making to the regions.”

Philippe J. Fournier joins me to discuss Monday's vote in Quebec

François Legault and the Coalition Avenir Québec started the 2022 Quebec election campaign with a big lead in the polls.

And that’s where they are ending it — despite themselves.

But while another CAQ majority looks very likely, the campaign hasn’t answered perhaps the biggest question we had when it began — are Quebec’s politics in the midst of a re-alignment as the Conservatives and Québec Solidaire rise and the Liberals and the Parti Québécois fade away?

To discuss what each of the parties can expect on Monday night, I’m joined again by Philippe J. Fournier of 338Canada.com on The Writ Podcast.

I noticed that out of the gate. Methinks most Quebecois political animals have weird arrogance N'esy Pas?

Methinks the Ghosts of André Arthur and Tom Young know why I hope Éric Duhaime wins a seat in the "National Assembly" N'esy Pas?

Dear Mr. Amos,

Thank you for your follow up e-mail to me today. I was on days off over the holidays and returned to work this evening. Rest assured I was not ignoring or procrastinating to respond to your concerns.

As your attachment sent today refers from Premier Graham, our position is clear on your dead calf issue: Our forensic labs do not process testing on animals in cases such as yours, they are referred to the Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown who can provide these services. If you do not choose to utilize their expertise in this instance, then that is your decision and nothing more can be done.

As for your other concerns regarding the US Government, false imprisonment and Federal Court Dates in the US, etc... it is clear that Federal authorities are aware of your concerns both in Canada and theUS. These issues do not fall into the purvue of Detachment policing in Petitcodiac, NB.

It was indeed an interesting and informative conversation we had on December 23rd, and I wish you well in all of your future endeavors.

Former Quebec radio host Andre Arthur died Sunday.

While he was hospitalized for a few days, according to his own messages on Twitter, he himself prepared tweets announcing his death, which were published Sunday evening. He was 78 years old.

Controversial, calling himself a polemicist, he occupied the airwaves in Quebec City since the early 1980s.

Arthur was also an independent Member of Parliament for the federal riding of Portneuf--Jacques-Cartier from 2006 to 2011.

After his election defeat, he made a return to radio, which was not without controversy. He was notably fired by CHOI Radio X in 2016, and then by BLVD 102.1 radio, after making homophobic remarks in 2018.

"I had the privilege of having had a career as a bus driver, a sports referee, elected to the House of Commons as an independent without allegiance to a party, a place in the media that I hope left no one indifferent and that I managed to make you laugh," he wrote in his posthumous tweet.

Arthur is survived by his son René, his three grandchildren, his daughter Pascale, his 'tender Lucy' and his brother Louis.

Iconic Talk of the Town host Tom Young dead at 75

Gruff and cantankerous on the air, Young was a family man with a 'heart of gold'

Tom Young, a radio icon in Saint John for more than 50 years, has died. He was 75.

Young was best known as the host of the long-running show Talk of the Town on CFBC as  well as The Afternoon News on News 88.9 Saint John, News 91.9 Moncton, and News 95.7 Halifax.

Young was born in 1942 and grew up in the Toronto area, quitting school after Grade 10 to join the military. He started his broadcasting career in military radio in what was then West Germany.

Longtime CHSJ news director Brian McLain met young in 1978, when he was scouted to join CFBC in Saint John.

Tom Young, right, played a charity hockey tournament with fellow radio broadcasters Donnie Robertson, centre, and Mark Lee. (Submitted by Jody Kliffer)

"He was a force of nature, a whirlwind, and charismatic on the radio," McLain said.

In 1976, during the Groundhog Gale, CFBC was the only radio station that remained on the air.

With Young at the helm, "it became like a command centre," said McLain.

"That was one of the highlights of his career, and it put CFBC on the map."

'Tom was the guy'

Todd Veinotte, who produced Young's afternoon news show and took over as host after his retirement, remembered Young as "the guy, back in the 1970s and into the 1980s."

"He was the boss — he brought in the numbers. He was CFBC."

While Veinotte and Young had "many disagreements" over the years, Veinotte said, "he taught me some important lessons — mainly, to never pretend to be anyone other than yourself, and never pretend you know something that you don't."

Tom Young, pictured here with former premier Shawn Graham, was well-known as a radio host in southern New Brunswick for nearly five decades. (Submitted by Trish Hamilton)

"He would drag himself into the studio no matter what. I remember one time he even had a bunch of teeth replaced, and he was just in agony, and he still dragged himself in and gave 100 per cent. He was an old-school radio guy, a pro."

Young could seem gruff to callers who ventured opinions on his Talk of the Town show, but Veinotte remembers the broadcaster's sense of humour.

"He was hilarious, always joking. He always used to say: 'never give the listener an opportunity to change the dial.'"

Young signed off for the last time in August 2011.

His "legacy was massive in southern New Brunswick," said Veinotte.

Mayor, town councillor

In addition to his radio career, Young's lifelong interest in politics led him to municipal governance.

He served as the mayor of Renforth from 1989 to 1992 and later for several terms as a Rothesay town councillor.

As a politician,"even if something was unpopular, he would stick to his guns," McLain said. "I remember going to his home and seeing the books on his shelves were all about politics and history.

"He came across as the everyday sort of guy, but he actually read very widely."

Young was known for his keen interest in local affairs, particularly politics. (Submitted by Trish Hamilton)

A softer side

Although blunt and uncompromising at work, at home Young was a soft-hearted family man.

"Everyone saw him as a tough, mean guy that never smiled, but his family knew him in another light," son Tyler Young said, adding that with him and his two sisters, Young "had a heart of gold."

He and his wife, Diana, were married for nearly 50 years. They moved after their retirement to St. John's, N.L., in order to be close to their four grandchildren, who were "his whole world," his son said.

Tom Young died Monday in a St. John's hospital of complications from knee surgery last week.

"Some people were just made to be something," said Tyler. "And he was made to be a radio announcer."

No funeral will be held, according to Young's wishes.

'This is a school, not a circus.'

https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/furey-school-board-goes-silent-on-viral-teacher-citing-personnel-matter

FUREY: School board goes silent on viral teacher, citing 'personnel matter'

The Halton District School Board isn’t answering any more questions about the Toronto-area high school teacher who went viral around the world for wearing what appears to be jumbo-sized prosthetic breasts to class.

They won’t answer media questions. They won’t answer questions put to them by parents. And they’re using the excuse of it being a “personnel matter” for not dealing with the issue.

That’s not right. Because parents (and students) are right to be concerned. The situation just isn’t normal and shouldn’t be allowed to continue.

Images of a transgender Oakville Trafalgar High School teacher have caused a stir on social media.

When the story first went viral, it was after students at Oakville Trafalgar High School posted a number of pictures and videos to social media. Margo Shuttleworth, chair of the school board, told the Sun’s Joe Warmington that they were standing behind the teacher in the name of protecting “gender rights”. Shuttleworth added that they were “creating a safety plan” for both the teacher and in anticipation of protests.

But other than a lone individual who would not give his name to media, nobody showed up to protest in front of the school on Monday morning. Students arriving at school that morning gave differing opinions to the Sun, with some not concerned about the issue and others saying it has caused debate within the school.

The Sun has since been told by sources that few students attended the teachers’ class that day, with only about half a dozen kids showing up. Meanwhile, parents have called and emailed the school to ask questions and haven’t received meaningful responses.

It’s obvious that the status quo should not continue. The teacher should not be able to continue teaching – especially shop class – while wearing such distracting and disturbing accoutrement.

School boards have dress codes. As employment lawyer Sunira Chaudhri recently explained in a column by Jerry Agar, the school is totally within their right to expect this teacher to follow a dress code.

Chaudhri described the teacher’s presentation as “beyond the scope of what any reasonable employer would expect and nobody would be surprised to see an employer stepping in and saying, ‘We need you as a teacher to come to school and dress professionally.’”

Exactly. This has nothing to do with something like transgender rights. The story has gone viral not because the teacher identifies as trans. It’s gone viral because everyone knows it’s completely inappropriate for someone to present themselves this way in a professional environment.

Yet the board isn’t budging. When the Sun asked them to confirm the reduced attendance at the class, the fact parents have deemed their response inadequate and to find out what they’d be doing next, they would not answer any of those questions. They instead stuck to their talking points.

“The HDSB recognizes the rights of students, staff, parents/guardians and community members to equitable treatment without discrimination based upon gender identity and gender expression. Gender identity and gender expression are protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code.,” the board said in a statement that was not attributed to any one individual. “As this is a personnel matter, we cannot provide further information.”

What do you call such a phenomenon? This goes beyond an incident of “wokeness” or “political correctness”. The fact that there’s a very simple issue that needs to be addressed here and it appears that the board just won’t do anything about it puts this in a whole different league.

EXCLUSIVE: 'This is a school, not a circus.' Students join protestors outside Canadian school where trans teacher with oversize prosthetic breasts, as authorities consider introducing DRESS CODE to force her to tone down her look

  • Transgender teacher Kayla Lemieux went viral when she was pictured wearing huge prosthetic breasts in the middle of shop class
  • Lemieux is a tech teacher at Oakville Trafalgar High School in an upscale residential neighborhood roughly 25 miles west of Toronto
  • DailyMail.com can reveal that school board members voted to consider implementing a dress code on Wednesday
  • This could mean that Lemieux may have to ditch the fabric-stretching prosthetic breasts, which sell online for as much as $1,000
  • The district has defended Lemieux and said it would no longer answer questions about the issue as it is a 'personnel matter'

The trans high school teacher in Canada who is flaunting oversize prosthetic breasts will have to tone down her revealing wardrobe if school board members get their way.

Kayla Lemieux, a tech teacher at Oakville Trafalgar High School in an upscale residential neighborhood roughly 25 miles west of Toronto, has garnered global attention after photos and video appeared on social media showing her eye-popping fake breasts.

Under pressure from fuming parents, the Halton District School Board (HDSB) issued a statement to explain that its hands are tied due to the province's Human Rights Code.

And students seem to be behind the move. Several joined a small protest outside the school Friday, with one declaring: 'This is a school, not a circus. We just want to learn.'

A motion was put forward at a school board meeting Wednesday to consider altering the dress code – which could mean that Lemieux may have to ditch the fabric-stretching prosthetic breasts, which sell online for as much as $1,000.

At a meeting of the HDSB on Wednesday, trustee Tracey Ehl Harrison put forward a motion that 'the director be requested to return to the board, by November 2022, a report addressing the various considerations regarding dress code'

'The HDSB recognizes the rights of students, staff, parents/guardians and community members to equitable treatment without discrimination based upon gender identity and gender expression,' the board said in a statement. 'Gender identity and gender expression are protected grounds under the Ontario Human Rights Code.'

Minutes before the final bell on Friday, a small group of protesters showed up at the end of the school’s driveway, shouting for school officials to ‘protect our children.’

Across the street, several people held signs that spelled out ‘Inclusivity is no excuse for depravity.’ One person held up a sign that said: ‘Teacher’s personal propaganda has no place in the classroom.’

Most of the students who spilled out of the school’s numerous exits left to start their weekends but a group of mostly senior grade students joined the protest.

Police officers, facing a crowd that swelled to nearly 100, escorted vehicles out of the school parking lot.

‘Thank you for speaking up for us,’ one male student shouted before being handed a megaphone. ‘This is a school not a circus! We just want to learn!’

Another student told the protesters he doesn’t go to school to be ‘distracted.’

‘It’s so crazy that nobody is doing anything.’

Students who joined the fracas said they are bound by a dress code that prohibits visible nipples or genitalia so they are left wondering why the same rules don’t apply to Lemieux.

One of the protest organizers blasted the human rights code for protecting ‘a man who dresses up as a woman who has size Z fetish fake boobs.’

‘What are we doing to our children to allow this?’ he asked the crowd.

Protesters from a faith-based group called Action 4 Canada called for the principal and school board trustees to resign for failing to protect students.

It appeared that Lemieux was taken out of the school to the driveway of an adjacent YMCA childcare facility, where she was driven away from the scene.

Protesters have vowed to keep fighting and are planning more demonstrations.

At a  meeting of the HDSB on Wednesday, trustee Tracey Ehl Harrison put forward a motion that 'the director be requested to return to the board, by November 2022, a report addressing the various considerations regarding dress code.'

Yuxuan Xie, a student in grade 10, told the Sun that most of the kids in school seem to have brushed the incident off.

'I don't really hear anyone talking about it,' he said. 'I think, maybe, we don't care about that.'

A woman identifying herself as Lei, a mother of a senior at the school, told the Sun that while she was ok with Lemieux coming out as a trans woman, she said wearing such large prosthetics was too much.

'I think he's going a little too far,' Lei said. 'I think identifying himself is ok, but I think that just wearing that in the classroom... I still have concerns over that.'

Municipal Election: 11 candidates running for Ward 5 councillor

The race for city council in Hamilton’s Ward 5 is jam-packed with candidates. Ward 5 is one of the wards where a new face on council is guaranteed because there is no incumbent.

Russ Powers has been filing in since Chad Collins stepped down but Powers isn’t running in the election. Eleven candidates want Ward 5’s seat, but only one can win.

Businessman and coach George Rusich says he’s the right guy, “I believe the definition of a councillor is somebody who inspires their community, their youth, their small businesses, I live as a councillor daily. I own a sport rehab where I help hundreds of residents from the Ward 5 area.”

Canada Revenue Agency employee Bob Hurst says he’s got the know-how to handle constituent concerns.

“I’ve spent the last 15 years working with the federal government listening to taxpayers call in with their questions and concerns and trying to address those. I feel I can do that as a representative for the individuals in Ward 5 in the city and make sure they feel they’re being listened to,” Hurst explained.

Former longtime city employee Gordon Noble is running on his experience inside city hall, “I know the ins and outs of the city, I’ve handled million-dollar budgets and I think my experience is experience that matters.”

Commercial realtor Krysta Boyer thinks an experienced leader is what Ward 5 needs,
and says her years of volunteer work makes her the right choice.

“Within that twenty years of community service I’ve gained a lot of knowledge that will transfer over into that role of councillor and what we need right now is experience,” Boyer said.

Ryan Ladner, a former aide to ex-Stoney Creek MPP Paul Miller says his experience handling constituent concerns would help him be a great councillor. Beyond that, he wants to stop the proposed redevelopment of Eastgate Square, which includes new high-rise residential buildings.

“They have the five towers that are being proposed and we’re already seeing major issues right now with the three that are being proposed off of Francis. It’s got the community in a massive uproar right now,” Ladner said.

Candidate and former city employee Matt Francis also wants to see the plan stopped, “Centennial and Queenston is very busy, throwing 9,000 people in this location is only going to make matters worse.”

With all the development going on in the ward, longtime Environment Hamilton Executive Director Lynda Lukasik her PhD in urban planning makes her the right choice.

“Having someone who understands planning policy, understands some of the challenging issues we have in the city with planning, I think is someone who’s in a really good position to get in and do the job right,” Lukasik said.

CHCH News reached out to all the candidates who provided contact information when they registered to run but did not hear back from the rest of the field in Ward 5.

Ontarians go to the polls to pick their next municipal government on October 24th,

White nationalist mayoral candidate getting Hamilton voters list is frightening, say anti-hate groups

Ontario city gave municipal candidates access to names, addresses of voters as of Sept. 1

Municipal election candidates are entitled to get access to the names and addresses of voters as defined under Ontario law, raising some concerns when it comes to a self-described white nationalist who's running for Hamilton mayor this fall.

Paul Fromm, who has run many times for political office at different levels, is among nine mayoral candidates looking to replace Fred Eisenberger, who chose not to seek re-election in the Oct. 24 municipal vote.

The City of Hamilton confirmed to CBC that municipal candidates were given access to the list of voters as of Sept. 1.

Fromm has advocated for whites-only immigration and marched with Nazis.

His latest attempt to become Hamilton mayor — he also ran in 2018 — has drawn concern from anti-hate activist Bernie Farber and others.

Farber, chair of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, reacted to Fromm getting voters' names and addresses by saying, "What can be done with that is a little frightening."

But in an email to CBC Hamilton, Fromm said any concerns about him having voter information are unfounded, adding that "the implications are both scaremongering and defamatory."

"I have run in elections, municipal, federal and provincial, in both Ontario and Alberta [once], and have had access to voters lists. I have never used them other than for legitimate election purposes.

"I hope this election will be about freedom and the way many politicians have abused and restricted ours during COVID."

There is a level of concern because [Fromm] doesn't believe everyone should be treated equally … This is real life, there are real consequences.
- Lyndon George, executive director, Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre

Farber, however, said releasing people's home addresses, in an era when information can be shared easily online, puts individuals who work in the public domain or who say or do things that "racists and bigots don't like" at risk.

"If a bad guy wanted to find out where the good guys lived, all they have to do is run for office," Farber told CBC Hamilton in late August, calling Fromm "the great-grandfather of the neo-Nazi movement in this country."

Evan Balgord, executive director of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, said while Farber and his organization aren't alleging that Fromm has or will do anything illegal with the data, the bottom line is they don't trust him.

"You can't trust a word a Nazi says and he's been an open one for decades," Balgord said.

Farber, former chief executive officer of the Canadian Jewish Congress, has been the target of numerous threats and a 1994 neo-Nazi plot against his life. (Around that time, Farber says, the Heritage Front was planning to come to his workplace — he believes it's because they didn't know where he lived.)

Anti-racism centre also expresses concern

In a statement to CBC, local organization Hamilton Anti-Racism Resource Centre (HARRC) said it shared Farber's concerns.

"As an organization that offers support services to individuals who encounter racism and hate in Hamilton, allowing Paul Fromm ... access to the voters list is a real concern in Hamilton," said HARRC executive director Lyndon George.

George said Fromm's history of not recognizing how hurtful his views are to many members of the community means it is difficult to trust him with something that can make residents feel vulnerable, such as having their personal information.

"Fromm has made hate his life work… From anti-Semitic to anti-immigrant statements, he has a long and well-known list of hate associated with his name. Allowing him access to a voters list that includes addresses and names of residents is something we clearly do not support … There is a level of concern because he doesn't believe everyone should be treated equally … His words have often been the things that individuals turn to to validate their sense of hate. This is real life, there are real consequences."

Fromm's history with far-right organizations

Fromm, who moved to Hamilton from Mississauga in 2018, has a long history with white supremacist groups and causes. He runs several far-right organizations, including:

  • The Canadian Association for Free Expression, which has campaigned in support of Holocaust deniers.
  • Citizens for Foreign Aid Reform, which opposes foreign aid.
  • The Canada First Immigration Reform Committee, which opposes immigration, particularly by people who are not of European descent.

Fromm was dismissed from his teaching job at the Peel District School Board in 1993 because of his political activities.

In revoking his teaching licence in 2007, the Ontario College of Teachers cited Fromm's attendance at a birthday celebration for Adolf Hitler in 1991 and him sharing a stage with Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke in 1994 as among the reasons.

Hamilton could have a better system, Farber says

Farber said he's removed himself from the voters list to protect his family from potential threats from any candidate or party.

He said the Canadian Anti-Hate Network has made its concerns clear at the federal level. The organization has also taken issue with candidates and parties at various levels, such as the People's Party of Canada, and its access to voter information.

Farber also suggested that Fromm's repeated candidacy in Hamilton could have motivated the city to come up with an alternate system to releasing voter information.

"Hamilton could lead and could come up with a resourceful idea to keep the information personal," he said, shortly before the list was made available to candidates.

The City of Hamilton confirmed that, under Ontario's Municipal Elections Act, it must provide voter information to anyone certified as a candidate.

Candidates must submit an oath promising to use the package for election purposes only and not post it online or sell it, explained Aine Leadbetter, manager of elections, print and mail.

Enforcement of the act is done through the courts.

When asked why Fromm should have access to the names and addresses of voters in Hamilton, given his far-right ties and activities, city communications officer Michelle Shantz said "all certified candidates are entitled, under the Municipal Elections Act (MEA), to request and receive a copy of the voters list."

The issue of giving voter lists to candidates with controversial pasts was raised in recent years in Calgary when concerns surfaced over mayoral candidate Kevin J. Johnston, who was facing assault and hate-crime charges in Ontario and B.C.

CBC News reported in 2021 that as a result of allegations surrounding Johnston, the City of Calgary was working with its legal team regarding legislation that requires a list of voters be provided to mayoral candidates.

Elections Calgary eventually decided to run the October 2021 civic election without a voter list, according to the Calgary Herald. At the time, the Canadian Anti-Hate Network said while Calgary wouldn't be giving the municipal candidates the names and addresses of voters, "the issue with elector lists is a Canada-wide problem."

George, of HARRC, said Calgary made a "bold decision" on the issue and urged Hamilton policymakers to do the same.

"Standing up to hate takes leadership at all levels of government. The question is will our current and future elected municipal leaders take steps to prevent known neo-Nazis like Paul Fromm from accessing the voters list?" he asked.

Political scientist Peter Graefe told CBC Hamilton the list can be beneficial to candidates who are able to tap into voter information from past elections and be strategic in their campaign planning.

"With both name and address, campaigns can be more confident in lining up data collected in past campaigns (including campaigns at other levels of government) with the voters list in the current campaign," he said.

Fromm is running against Bob Bratina, Ejaz Butt, Jim Davis, Andrea Horwath, Solomon Ikhuiwu, Hermiz Ishaya, Keanin Loomis and Michael Pattison.

While the Canadian Anti-Hate Network didn't take specific issue with any other candidate in Hamilton, it told CBC it doesn't think "anybody should be given voters lists, given the privacy and safety issues."

'Take a stand against hate at the ballot box'

Howard Eisenberg, president of the Hamilton Jewish Federation, raised concerns of his own over who's able to get voters lists.

"It is troubling that personal information from the voter registry could find its way into the hands of self-declared white nationalists," Eisenberg wrote in a statement. "This is something that would be concerning not just to the Jewish community but to other minorities as well.

"Hamiltonians should take a stand against hate at the ballot box and send a clear and unequivocal message that there is no place for hate at City Hall."

Hamilton-based Rabbi David Mivasair sees things differently. Mivasair is a political activist with Independent Jewish Voices, which has called out Israel's treatment of Palestinians and supported the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.

I assume that if anyone wants to find me or any other community activists, they can.

He said although it's unpleasant to think about Fromm getting everyone's address, it doesn't really change much. Mivasair said a lot of personal information can easily be found online, and candidates often buy voter information that has such details included.

"I'm not particularly concerned that a racist gets access to publicly available information," he said. "I assume that if anyone wants to find me or any other community activists, they can. It's not hard to find virtually anyone. Any journalist, any political activist, any rabbi.

"I'm not saying Paul Fromm is an OK person or I am not worrying about him. But … that information [from the voters list] doesn't indicate a person's ethnic background or political orientation. He's not going to be able to go through that information to find out who the leftists are or who the racialized people are.

"If he wants to get Rabbi Mivasair doxxed, he can [already] do that."
