@Jim Reid Heck, I'd run, but my North Shore Rhino Party supporters all went Liberal in the 1980s...Besides, who wants an honest reporter like me running a dishonest system? As a premier, Gallant never got it, thus the loss...

David Amos
David Amos
@JJ Carrier "who wants an honest reporter"

Methinks the whole world always does but everybody knows the Irving Clan will not allow such a mythical person as that to be employed in New Brunswick N'esy Pas?

Is this the party that nobody wants to be the leader of?

Did Gallant do that much damage?

Even with unanimous support from his Caucus.
Of course, he was in power then.
Few things are as finite as failure in politics.

David Amos
David Amos
@Brian Robertson Nay not so. Methinks the sneaky lawyers such as Trudeau the Elder came back after a loss of a mandate just as Mackenzie King and John A Macdonald did before him. Hence the young dumb Gallant lawyer could have done the same but not now N'esy Pas?

Marguerite Deschamps
Marguerite Deschamps
@David Amos, the elder Trudeau did resign, but they begged him to come back and stay.

Methinks I would enjoy the job and I would work for 20 grand a year which is more than I live on now byway of my old age pension. However its hard to become a Premier when one runs as an Independent N'esy Pas?

@David Amos, this is why it only attracts those a little better than you to run for political office.

Is there anyone in the caucus who can be leader and appeal to all of New Brunswick? Not many names for Liberals come to mind...

Failed due to over expenditure , language lack of common sense and promise of more over expenditure just to gain electoral vote. Cover ups , failed environmental controls lack of any real health care change , failed closure of 9 person student schools that employ more than the student number. That’s what yourissue is. And the failure to see that is just another example of piss poor government. And we still have obstetrics closed in Bathurst, southern hospitals overloaded lack of opening billing numbers limited retirement facilities , but we have a millions donation to Moncton arena for which there is no answer on its benefit and we have lots of dope plants .

June Arnott

@Ian Scott and all politicians still getting lots of money paid into their bank accounts. We have no money in NB (deficit) yet the useless politicians get paid

Remember what you are feeling Brian !! Remember long and hard this feeling that you have of failure, of not being good enough, or smart enough..........That same feeling is the one that the majority of people in this province have had for the past 40 plus years all because of you and your ilk..... Marginalized, disenfranchised, treated as second class, remember, remember well !!

Dianne Bastarache

Well , it did not take long for the knives to come out , and throw Gallant out as leader . Through wild out of control spending and massive tax increases , Gallant managed to turn the voters against the Liberal party . Gallant has done a lot of damage to the Liberal party , and failed to realize that Anglophones vote as well . No doubt Dominic LeBlanc will find Gallant a nice easy Federal govt. position where he will have to do little to no work . Bye Bye Brian !!!

Mack Leigh
Mack Leigh
@Matt Steele

Brian Boy had lots and lots of help turning the voters against the Liberals.... Arseneault, Boudreau, LeBlanc, Rousselle, Melanson, along with several others helped steer this sinking ship....... Brian will just be the fall guy and now on to the next power hungry sucker...

The Back Room of the Liberal Party should be ashamed of themselves, for taking a young man fresh out of college, with no experience with the intention of making them their puppet. The ethics and morals behind this room is awful. You set this young man up for failure for your greed..... You know who you are. Shame on you.

Brian Gallant has to take some responsibility... albeit, he was taken advantage of by the political backroom..... His ego let him believe his intelligence could make up for his lack of experience. Not.

We live in a Neoliberal society, where corporations shop for slave labour overseas in China, the Pacific Rim in general, Africa, Latin America, Mexico, Africa, and the list goes on...Close to 40 million slaves producing 150 billion dollars in slave made products....

The world's peoples are being exploited. These corporations are paying no taxes. They abandoned their home countries in search and exploitation of slave labour.

Then, there are the corporations that are staying "locally", but moving their profits to tax havens such as the Cayman Islands, Bermuda... and places you have never heard of.....

If you are wondering why your public services are suffering ......wonder no more... Your corporations are not paying their fair share of taxes.... Between moving to countries for slave labour, and / or moving their locally made profits to tax havens... the " we are all in it together" philosophy is gone with Neoliberalism.

This is what NewBrunswick and Canada has to wrestle with to save our future... If the climate does not kill us first.... And that is questionable.

Joseph Vacher

3 little provinces, 3 governments on the east coast of Canada. 2 million people. Great ports to nearby World markets. Great major roads. Predictable climate. Been some home grown successful entrepreneurs, already but...
We keep electing the same types in the same old system every 4 years and expect different results. What’s the problem? We need representation throughout the 3 provinces but only one Premier. The current system of government in PEI, NS & NB is financially doomed unless Atlantic Canada speaks as one political voice. We should not wait for Ottawa to expand our markets. We need to do it.

David Amos

@Dan Lee "ACADIA.........till the british broke it apart"

Methinks everybody who play politics seriously knows one of my Forefathers is Daniel Keith. He was a Kings Ranger in the 1700s. He is buried in Fundy Royal where I often run for public office. Trust that my Father a former Tax Supervisor of this province was very proud to be a descendant of that British Loyalist.

However unlike my Father I am more like another Forefather of ours. He was Adam Amos . He challenged William Pitt the Younger politically in Scotland. History byway of Wikipedia tells us that Pitt increased taxes to pay for the great war against France and cracked down on radicalism. To engage the threat of Irish support for France, he engineered the Acts of Union 1800 and tried (but failed) to get Catholic emancipation as part of the Union. He created the "new Toryism", which revived the Tory Party and enabled it to stay in power for the next quarter-century.

Anyway Adam was forced to flee Scotland and settle in New Brunswick in the early 1800s. I truly believe he may have been on the same boat as the the ancestors of the Irving Clan and is buried near Amos Point which not far from Shediac N'esy Pas?

@Marc Martin

Speech in the House of Commons on the Stamp Act (14 January 1766), by William Pitt The Elder

It is my opinion, that this kingdom has no right to lay a tax upon the colonies. At the same time I assert the authority of this kingdom over the colonies to be sovereign and supreme in every circumstance of Government and legislation whatsoever. The colonists are the subjects of this kingdom, equally entitled with yourselves to all the natural rights of mankind and the peculiar privileges of Englishmen...The Americans are the sons, not the bastards, of England. Taxation is no part of the governing or legislative power...When, therefore, in this House we give and grant, we give and grant what is our own. But in an American tax, what do we do? We, your Majesty's Commons for Great Britain, give and grant to your Majesty,—what? Our own property?—No! We give and grant to your Majesty, the property of your Majesty's Commons of America...The distinction between legislation and taxation is essentially necessary to liberty...There is an idea in some, that the colonies are virtually represented in this House...Is he represented by any knight of the shire, in any county in this kingdom?...Or will you tell him that he is represented by any representative of a borough?—a borough which perhaps its own representatives never saw.—This is what is called the rotten part of the constitution. It cannot continue a century. If it does not drop, it must be amputated...I rejoice that America has resisted. Three millions of people so dead to all the feelings of liberty, as voluntarily to let themselves be made slaves, would have been fit instruments to make slaves of all the rest...The gentleman asks, When were the colonies emancipated? I desire to know when were they made slaves?

He was ill equipped for the job. He lacked maturity and leadership skills. The party would have been better off electing Mike Murphy as leader years ago. You can't buy maturity and experience. The last 4 years of politics in this province under the Gallant gov't have been nothing more for an joke with so many wrong decisions and it showed in the polls. When Gallant claimed that he didn't realize the divide between the anglophones and francophones in this province, it is proof of how out of touch he is with what is going on here in NB. The Liberals need to learn from this catastrophe and not make the same mistake twice.

David Amos
David Amos
@kelly sherrard "The party would have been better off electing Mike Murphy as leader years ago"

Not thats funny Welcome to the Circus

Matt Steele
Matt Steele
@kelly sherrard ....Gallant certainly realized that there was a divide between Anglophones and Francophones in N.B. as one of his primary goals was the total frenchification of N.B. . His mistake was to believe that all the Anglophones in N.B. could be bought off , and manipulated . Big mistake Brian ; now no more unlimited govt. credit card and travel expense account for you !!!

David Amos
David Amos
@Matt Steele So says the all knowing NDP dude.

Methinks the liberals deliberately exploited the divide between the two linguistic communities in order to pacify the support within the SANB electorate and more importantly hoping to split the vote on the right. Well they got the support they wanted in the north but it backfired bigtime in the south. The political rhetoric split the vote on the right enough to make Kris Austin a Kingmaker on the right. On the left except or the blueberry farmer up north the NDP bearly made dent in the liberal party bus but they lost two seats to the Greens in their traditional stomping grounds thereby making the Green leader who can't be named in CBC the Kingmaker on the left.

It is disgusting this French versus English nonsense has divided the province in two over something that should not have happened in this day and age whn we have so much more to be concerned about. However as an Independent I am enjoying the circus in the Legislature because the liberals and the PCs have lost a grip on our tax dollars and are grasping a straws to secure some sort of mandate. All the NDP candidates and many other political people who have laughed at me throughout 6 elections thus far are as much a loser as I am. With regards to your beloved party the actions of your old buddies Dominic Cardy and Kelly Lamrock now of the PC Party have caused the NDP have become a rather irrelevant party to most New Brunswickers Continue to ignore me if you wish. Yrust that I have grown accustomed to the NDP. I did run against your former president federal elections in 2004 and your latest leader in 2015. They would not talk to me in private let alone attempt to debate me in public N'esy Pas?

Brian Gallant plans to resign as Liberal leader

Former New Brunswick premier tells caucus members he's decided to quit

Former New Brunswick premier Brian Gallant has told caucus members he will announce his resignation Thursday as leader of the provincial Liberal Party. (Michel Corriveau/Radio-Canada)

Brian Gallant plans to resign as New Brunswick Liberal leader.

Moncton East MLA Monique LeBlanc confirmed to Radio-Canada that Gallant told the caucus of his plans Wednesday afternoon.

"I have to admit I was a little sad," LeBlanc said. "I went into politics because of Brian. … We had four great years. I'm proud of the work we did."

Gallant will make the announcement to reporters at 11 a.m. on Thursday.

His decision comes in the wake of an election campaign in which the party was reduced to just 21 seats in the 49-member legislature. Gallant's government lost a confidence vote on Nov. 2 and the Progressive Conservatives were sworn into power last week.

Gallant's departure means the party must organize a leadership campaign quickly. With a minority PC government in power, an election could be triggered unexpectedly.
I think that the electorate wasn't convinced that our party was taking the financial situation seriously.- Susan Holt, unsuccessful Liberal candidate
Some Liberals have already signalled their interest in running for the leadership, with two of them saying the party needs a new direction.

Saint John-Rothesay Liberal MP Wayne Long and former provincial Liberal candidate Susan Holt both say Gallant's re-election campaign was hurt by a blitz of pre-writ government spending announcements, and a similar wave of campaign promises.

"The more and more good work we did and the more and more announcements we did, it seemed like the more and more people pushed away from that and viewed it very, very skeptically and with cynicism," Long said.

Sent mixed messages

He said the party needs a centrist message that supports spending on child care and education, "but we also have to make sure we're fiscally responsible."

Holt said that despite successive lower deficits in each year of the Liberal mandate, spending promises during the campaign made it appear the party was not committed to balancing the budget.

Susan Holt, who ran for the Liberals in September election, says she found the party's message cynical and negative. (CBC)

"I think that the electorate wasn't convinced that our party was taking the financial situation seriously," she said. "There was a sense we weren't serious about debt reduction, and I think we could have done a better job communicating our seriousness about the debt."

She also said she disliked the negative tone of the campaign, including Liberal advertising that attacked Progressive Conservative Leader Blaine Higgs, who is now the premier.

Party could be 'less negative'

"I think we could have been more positive and maybe less cynical in the campaign," she said. "Maybe by positive, I mean less negative."

Wayne Long, the Saint John-Rothesay MP, says the party's provincial election campaign was hurt by too many spending promises. (CBC)

Long said ahead of news of Gallant's announcement that he would not run for the leadership if the race began before next year's federal election, when he plans to run for a second term as MP.

Holt said she's merely responding to Liberals calling her to urge her to think about it.

"I'm not going to rush into a 'yes' if it doesn't feel like a 'yes.'"

Gallant admitted he was 'jaded'

In his closing speech before the confidence vote Nov. 2 and again at a news conference later that day and in opinion articles in newspapers, Gallant apologized for not doing a better job as premier.

He acknowledged that he won the leadership promising "a new approach" but became "too jaded and fell into some of the old adversarial ways of this place."

Premier Brian Gallant delivers his speech at the closure of the throne speech debate on Nov. 2. Gallant's Liberal government was defeated and the party leader will now resign from the post. (James West/Canadian Press)

He said the election result was a wake-up call and he would try to be more collaborative "no matter which position I'll be occupying."

Long and Holt are just two names circulating among Liberals as potential leadership candidates.

Liberal MLAs Roger Melanson and Benoît Bourque, also seen as possible candidates, did not respond to interview requests Wednesday.

Mayor not interested

Former MLA Donald Arseneault said he had "no immediate plans as I am enjoying living in Fredericton and Ottawa and looking at politics from a different perspective."

Moncton Mayor Dawn Arnold confirmed she has been approached.

"Yes, it has come up," she said in an email. "However, I am fully committed to the City of Moncton and continuing to move our city forward."

Federal Health Minister Ginette Petitpas-Taylor didn't respond to a request for comment on whether she'd jump into provincial politics.
