My name is Rick Northey and I am the current President of the Wildrose Independence Party of Alberta. I was born in Peterborough Ontario but have lived half my life in Alberta. I have experienced the both the boom times and the financial hardships that can follow.
My political involvement started at the University of Windsor when I joined the Reform party. In hindsight, I suppose, it only made sense to move to Calgary.
I was active for several years as a volunteer with the old Wildrose party. I have worked on many election campaigns filling almost every possible position at one time or another. I have also been the President of Wildrose and UCP constituency associations so I know the hard and unglamorous work that goes on behind the scenes of political parties.
During this last year, I was the Chair of the Committee which wrote our current interim Constitution and I helped negotiate the last phase of the FCP/Wexit merger. I have tried to adapt and learn from the mistakes of both Wildrose and the UCP, developing policies and procedures based on past successes and failures. Several months of work is now being submitted for Member’s approval to be the broad framework of the next phase of Wildrose.

UCP caucus rift grows over Kenney’s COVID lockdown
Medicine Hat UCP MLA Michaela Glasgo has joined colleagues Todd Loewen, Dave Hanson, Ron Orr, Angela Pitt and Drew Barnes in condemning current regulations.
More cracks are developing in Premier Jason Kenney’s UCP caucus after four more MLAs have come forward blasting the government’s current COVID-19 lockdown policies.
Medicine Hat UCP MLA Michaela Glasgo has joined colleagues Todd Loewen, Dave Hanson, Ron Orr, Angela Pitt and Drew Barnes in condemning current regulations.
“I’ve heard loud and clear the frustration from Albertans, and my own constituents, since (Monday’s) announcement of delayed reopenings and partially lifted restrictions. Know that I am listening, I hear you, and I believe that you have every right to feel this way — I do too,” Glasgo wrote on her Facebook page.
“Many people have questions about some of the inconsistent rules and moving goalposts. I know this and other issues have shaken the trust of Albertans. I committed to building trust with you, my constituents and intend to continue that.”
“I have always supported the regional approach to COVID. We have done an exceptional job with municipalities reaching and maintaining zero cases. We know there are physical and mental health benefits to safely opening more activities in gyms and allowing families and friends to spend time together.
“You have made considerable sacrifices on all levels. As an MLA, I learned about (the) announcement the same time and way as most Albertans did: on Facebook live. I will take the concerns of my constituents back to my government colleagues in hopes it will make a difference.”
It was the exact same post as the one put up by Loewen, UCP MLA for Centrel Peace-Notley.
“(EDIT: For those wondering, I discussed this post with several MLAs and staff before I posted it. After I posted it, other MLAs reached out to me to see if I would mind if they used it or shared it. I happily obliged. I hope more who share the views expressed here will also feel comfortable using and sharing it.) Loewen wrote.
The Calgary Sun’s Rick Bell reported MLAs Dave Hanson and Ron Barr are also opposing the restrictions.
Barnes and Pitt have also joined the “End the Lockdown Caucus” a group of politicians from across the country who are working to see the regulations are removed.
Kenney announcement of only libraries and gyms being allowed to resume some operations in Phase 2 caught many by surprise because the province has already exceeded many benchmarks to have started Phase 3.
Barnes said his Cypress-Medicine Hat constituents are “suffering extreme fatigue” because of the restrictions.
“Some of my colleagues (in caucus) are finally starting to push back – it’s going to be an interesting few weeks in politics,” Barnes said in an interview with the Western Standard.
“The government has lost the trust of some people here. The benchmarks were set and met. Albertans have done the hard work. But now the mental and economic crisis is just as bad as the COVID crisis.”
When questioned by reporters Wednesday on caucus criticism, Kenney said MLAs were free to speak their minds.
“I’m not at all surprised Albertans have a range of opinions,” Kenney said.
“We welcome the input of ideas from all MLAs.”
“The government cannot wish these things away. We can’t let politics get in the way.”

After refusing to answer Western Standard questions about Jason Kenney’s former chief of staff Jamie Huckabay’s severance package, the Premier’s Office finally released the numbers.
The Western Standard has been asking Kenney’s office daily since last Friday whether Huckabay would get a severance package – but has been met with complete silence. Western Standard reporters have also been denied the right to ask questions of Kenney in press conferences.
Minutes after the Western Standard published a story on Wednesday afternoon about the refusal to answer, the Premier’s Office said that Huckabay’s severance payout was less than the $130,000 pocketed by former Alison Redford chief of staff Stephen Carter.
“Sincere apologies for the length of time it has taken me to respond to your inquiry,” wrote Kenney’s chief spokesman Christine Myatt.
“The terms for severance are outlined in staff contracts – contracts that are publicly posted for all to see. These terms for political staffers are standard, longstanding, and not unique to the current government.
“I’d note that the NDP government paid out severance of close to $6 million in public funds for their government staff after the 2019 election.
“Mr. Huckabay had served as the now-Premier’s Chief of Staff since his time in opposition going back to 2018. Mr. Huckabay’s severance is in the range of $60,000 (pre-tax) – in line with the terms of his contract.”
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation wasn’t happy with the severance.
“Taxpayers shouldn’t be on the hook for Huckabay’s severance,” said Franco Terrazzano, the CTF’s Alberta Director.
“Someone messed up but it wasn’t taxpayers, so we shouldn’t be paying for the mistake.”
The last time a (COS) got replaced mid-term was in 2012, when Stephen Carter left the job with then-premier Alison Redford.
Even though he had only been on the job for six months, Carter left the job in April 2012, with a $130,000 cheque.
Carter, whose company defaulted on $600,000 in court-ordered payments, was Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi’s campaign chair in 2010.
A huge hubbub erupted when Carter’s severance was initially not made public.
Redford said she couldn’t release the figure because of FOIP laws but announced the provincial government would be forming a new policy that would see all salary and severance information for senior government employees disclosed by the end of the year.
In the end, Carter tweeted the amount of severance himself on October of 2013. He said he had negotiated his own severance contract that paid him the $130,000.
Huckabay was fired by Kenney during the UCP snowbird scandal, when it was discovered at least 10 MLAs and staffers had jetted out of the province for warmer climes, despite health recommendations advising against non-essential travel. Huckabay flew to the U.K.
The province was also in lockdown, meaning Christmas was cancelled for most people because household gatherings were banned. The measures meant people were not able to visit relatives in long term care centres over the holiday.
The Municipal Affairs Minister Tracy Allard lost her cabinet position – and the $60,000 bump in salary that came with it – after she was ordered back to the province from Hawaii, where she was having “a 17-year-traditional” Christmas gathering.
Huckabay’s publicly posted contract, dated April 30, 2019, lists his salary as $8,620.69 every two weeks – for a yearly total of $224,137,94.
It is not known whether he negotiated his own severance package.
Huckabay was a longtime Kenney ally, working with him on his UCP leadership campaign.
