B.C. premier defends comments on termination of CBC legislative reporter
Richard Zussman was terminated after an investigation revealed he had breached a number of CBC policies

Macarenko during his year-end interview on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017,
about the public comments he made on the firing of Richard Zussman.

B.C.'s premier says the CBC made a mistake in the termination of its legislative reporter.
"I disagree with what the CBC did. I think Richard Zussman is an outstanding journalist," said John Horgan in a year-end interview with the CBC on Thursday.
He said he was asked for his thoughts on Zussman by at least three journalists from other media outlets.
Zussman was the CBC's legislative reporter in Victoria.
"I was asked how I felt, so I articulated that," said Horgan, adding he doesn't regret offering Zussman words of support.
"I said that I felt, and I still do, that Richard Zussman is an outstanding young journalist in a sea of cynicism, and I think he's a breath of fresh air."
Earlier this month, Zussman was terminated by the corporation after
an independent, third-party investigation found he had breached a number
of corporation policies including the Code of Conduct, the Conflicts of Interest policy,
as well as an aspect of the corporation and the union's collective
agreement, according to Chuck Thompson, the head of public affairs
for CBC English Services.
Zussman had been working on a book about politics with Rob Shaw, a Vancouver Sun reporter.
"Mr. Zussman's employment with CBC was not terminated simply for co-authoring a book; numerous CBC journalists are published authors," said Thompson.
Thompson says the decision to terminate Zussman was not taken lightly.
"We take any termination decision seriously and account for all relevant considerations," he said.
Zussman is appealing the firing.
The Canadian Media Guild — the CBC employees' union — said in a statement on Wednesday that it is supporting Zussman and is involved in the case.
According to the CMG, article 12 of the collective agreement says that employees are free to engage in activities outside of the workplace, however there are restrictions, including not working with the competition and receiving appropriate permission.
University of the Fraser Valley political scientist Hamish Telford says Horgan's comments about Zussman are unusual in that politicians rarely, if ever, comment on the firings of journalists.
"It's also unusual, I think politically speaking, for the premier to weigh in without necessarily knowing all the the facts," said Telford, who added that he too was upset by Zussman's firing.
"But we're not privy to all the facts."
Horgan says he felt he had enough information on the firing to give an opinion when questioned by other reporters.

Canadian Media Guild statement regarding CBC employees and outside activities

We are aware of a recent Globe and Mail column about a matter
involving outside activities and CBC employees.
To Canadian Media Guild (CMG) members who have expressed your concerns
about the situation and possible overreach by management, please be
assured that the member involved has received ample advice and support
from our union organization and we are continuing to attend to the
case.
We can also tell everyone that according to our collective agreement,
CMG members working for the CBC are permitted to take part in
activities outside of the workplace. Article 12 has been part of our
collective agreement for nearly 20 years.
Article 12 says in part: “Employees shall be free to engage in
activities, such as voluntary and/or paid work outside their hours of
work…”.
There are some restrictions, namely that employees may not work with
the competition; that they may not, without permission, exploit their
connection with the CBC; and that they cannot take part in activities
that will adversely affect their work. Additionally, recognized on-air
personnel must discuss any outside activities before engaging in them.
In January 2015, however, despite the provisions of Article 12, CBC
management unveiled a blanket policy intended to prohibit all paid
outside appearances by on-air CBC journalistic employees.
Our union has been pursuing a policy grievance against that blanket
CBC policy, on behalf of all members, since 2015. Our concerns have
not been satisfactorily addressed so far.
As it turns out, the matter of “outside activities” may be one that
our union needs to address at the bargaining table with CBC next year,
as our collective agreement is scheduled to expire in early 2019.
We understand the importance of accountability. Article 12 is designed
to ensure protection against perceived conflicts of interest while
also ensuring some latitude on the part of CBC employees to pursue
outside activities.
It is also our position that employers must refrain from
disproportionate and arbitrary punishments and ensure that any rules
are impartially applied to all.

to the lessons of Vietnam but also to current military thought, that
folks like Colin Powell and "Stuffy" Leighton and others elucidated

to met before US troop can redeploy?
Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the PMO were even at the very
preliminary planning stages wary of Canadian involvement in an Iraq
operation....History would prove them correct. The political pressure
being applied on the PMO from the George W Bush administration was
onerous
American military assets were extremely overstretched, and Canadian
military assets even more so It was proposed by the PMO that Canadian
naval platforms would deploy to assist in naval quarantine operations
in the Gulf and that Canadian army assets would deploy in Afghanistan
thus permitting US army assets to redeploy for an Iraqi
operation....The PMO thought that "compromise would save Canadian
lives and liberal political capital.. and the priority of which
....not necessarily in that order. "

Some where in the streets and alleys tonight
Some where in the alleys of New Brunswick and Calgary are two uneducated
bums, another day closer to their demise. They are homeless, shiftless,
uneducated, loud, obnoxious and insane ...for these "people" death now is
better than another day of life...they have made nothing of their
lives...and are nothing but a burden to their families, "friends" and
the....tax payer.
David Amos is reduced now to the status of bum, wandering about asking people
for spare change, and scouring the streets for cigarette butts to smoke.
When he gets some change he does this sort of thing.
I managed to talk to a Lieutenant-Colonel Tony Weber is Acting Base Commander
of Base Gagetown 506 422 2000 ext 1410. He and one of his Sgt Majors even
looked at Barry Winter's blog for me
We seemed to get along as we discussed their vague knowledge of politicians,
Afghanistan, other officers they claimed to have never heard of, the CSE, our
missing emails and the words within Barry Winters blog. the Lt Col truly
seemed like an ok dude.
But the instant he said that Barry Winters malicious words were of no
embarrassment to him I got pissed all over again. Imagine if such shit had
been published by a former officer about him or his family? I bet he
would have sued his bosses long ago if winters had not be locked
up immediately.
Anyway I told the Lt Col that I would see him in courtand hung up on the
snobby bastard and split before the RCMP attempted to corner me in another
phone booth like they did for another one of Harper's former Minister Greggy
Baby Thompson's evil minions two years ago. Small wonder he is quitting
politics EH IGGY?
Oh Dear....how far has the "real deal" the "ethical whistle blower" has
fallen.
