Some 'good showdowns' expected in N.B. local elections after 1,100 decide to run
Some municipal councils will have acclaimed members after May 11

With nominations for the May 11 municipal elections now closed, there are some potentially lively contests in some areas, and acclaimed mayors and councillors in others.
The latter bunch includes Tracy and McAdam, where the entire councils will be acclaimed with no elections needed.
Voters across New Brunswick will elect mayors and councillors in municipalities or members of rural district advisory committees. District education councils are up for elections the same day.
In total, 1,102 people put their names forward for council positions.
“There have been some communities where there's like a really good contest, good showdowns that are going to take place,” said Paul Harpelle, director of communications for Elections New Brunswick.
“And, you know, hopefully that might translate into interest at that local level in that community and trickle down to some excitement amongst voters when it's time for them to go vote."
The province’s three biggest cities have lively races across the board, with many people running for mayor and council spots.
Fredericton and Saint John each have 32 people running for 12 councillor spots, and Moncton has 23 people running for 10 spots.
Fredericton and Moncton will both get new mayors.
In Moncton, the mayoralty candidates are current councillors Shawn Crossman and Charles Léger, Jeffrey McCluskey and Brian F.P. Murphy, a former member of Parliament and mayor.
There's a three-way race for mayor in Fredericton, where former MP Jenica Atwin, Coun. Steve Hicks, and John M. Reid are after the mayor's job.
Mayor Donna Reardon is running again in Saint John, where Blaine Harris and Coun. Barry Ogden are also seeking the top post.
Two smaller municipalities also have large numbers of candidates running: both Miramichi and Tracadie each have five in the running for mayor and 32 running for council.
Other municipalities with large numbers of people running for council are Bathurst, Campbellton, Caraquet, Carleton North, Edmundston and Riverview.
Out of New Brunswick’s 77 municipalities, 52 will have a contested race for the mayor’s role.
Thirty-four municipalities will see the incumbent mayor challenged by at least one other person. Two out of those 34 incumbent mayors, in Campbellton and Champdoré, are acting mayors after the elected mayor stepped aside at some point.
Eighteen municipalities are guaranteed to see new people in the mayor's job after the incumbents chose not to run.
In 20 municipalities, the incumbent mayor will be acclaimed. Five municipalities will see a non-incumbent, new mayor acclaimed.
As for acclamations, two places, Tracy and McAdam, are set to have their mayor and entire councils acclaimed with no competition.
Grand-Bouctouche and Nashwaak both will have one vacancy on council after not enough people signed up to run.
And two municipalities, Tantramar and Île-de-Lamèque, have their incumbent mayors running for a council seat this time around. The acting mayor of Saint Andrews is also running for a council seat there.
The three municipalities currently operating with appointed supervisors, Strait Shores, Sunbury-York South and Miramichi River Valley, will all see the last person who held the acting mayor role run for mayor. They are not counted as incumbents as there is technically no mayor and council in any of the three.
Candidates have until 5 p.m. on Monday to withdraw from the race if they reconsider.
A full list of candidates is available on the Elections N.B. website.

"OTTAWA • Two advocates for ending violence against women stormed out of a committee meeting last week in tears after MPs repeatedly interrupted their testimony to accuse each other of playing political games.
It’s caused a firestorm of backlash.
Federal Conservative members of the committee have posted dozens of times about the hearing on social media, berating the Liberals and NDP members for grinding testimony to a halt that focused on a new report from Statistics Canada that shows police-reported domestic violence climbing.
They’ve repeatedly demanded apologies.
Fredericton MP Jenica Atwin had subbed in as one of the Liberal members of the committee.
In an interview with Brunswick News, Atwin suggests the meeting was disingenuous and ultimately a political setup called without notice, and without the ability for all members to name witnesses.
But she also said it was “retraumatizing” real witnesses with a story to tell, while fearing it’s likely to happen again.
“It’s a game by putting us on the spot,” Atwin said.
“Of course we should address these statistics, my goodness, no one wants to see a rise in violence against women.
“However, when you put a meeting together like this, really what happens is it puts the witnesses who have been invited in a terribly vulnerable position.”
Atwin added: “There are just no words to describe how sorry I am for what those witnesses experienced. They should have never been put into that position, and I really think it falls to the feet of the chair, more than anything.
“She has power and a responsibility in that role.”

‘It was a setup’: Atwin on the committee that devolved into chaos
Two advocates stormed out of a committee last week in tears after MPs repeatedly interrupted their testimony
OTTAWA • Two advocates for ending violence against women stormed out of a committee meeting last week in tears after MPs repeatedly interrupted their testimony to accuse each other of playing political games.
Shelby Kramp-Neuman, the Conservative MP who chairs the House committee on the status of women, unilaterally called a mid-summer meeting last week to discuss a new report on a spike in reported domestic violence.
That’s as the federal Conservatives had spent months repeating that the federal Liberal government is soft on crime, leading to more violent crime.
The Wednesday meeting began with testimony from Cait Alexander, a domestic assault survivor from the group End Violence Everywhere.
“I’m supposed to be dead,” Alexander said in her opening remarks, then holding up graphic photos of the abuse she said she suffered at the hands of a partner three years ago.
Megan Walker, another advocate who was testifying in person, and Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich, speaking via video conference, also delivered opening statements.
MPs then got a chance to ask questions of the three individuals.
But soon after, Liberal MP Anita Vandenbeld moved a motion to abandon the meeting’s topic in favour of continuing a previous discussion on abortion rights.
Vandenbeld first thanked the witnesses for their “incredible” testimony and spoke directly to Alexander to say “we believe you, and we believe others like you,” while defending the Liberal government’s criminal justice record.
But she then accused the Conservatives of trying to use “victims’ and survivors’ trauma to try to score political points.”
“This is cruel,” Vandenbeld said.
“I think it’s cruel to have people relive the trauma they’ve endured just to be able to have a meeting…”
A lengthy back-and-forth between MPs ensued, with multiple points of order brought to the chair.
“It was a setup, it’s really what it comes down to,” Atwin said.
“So when we’re put into that kind of position, there are other things that we can do as well and I think that was why Anita brought that back to the table.
“She was within her right to do that.”
Asked if she agreed with Vandenbeld’s decision to bring that motion, or whether she wanted to listen to the testimony on domestic violence, Atwin said she wanted to do both.
“I support Anita in doing that,” she said, stating that it’s a procedural move in reaction to the Conservatives “playing games.”
But she added that Liberal MPs wanted to hear from the witnesses in the room as well.
That ultimately didn’t happen as the meeting dissolved into a fracas of procedural chaos and political bickering to a level that caused the witnesses to leave.
Conservative MP Anna Roberts spoke at one point to apologize to the two, while charging that “women in this country are being killed, and the other parties don’t care.”
“I’m disgusted,” Roberts said.
Atwin only spoke to challenge the speaking order of MPs.
NDP MP Leah Gazan accused the Conservative committee chair of failing to give her the floor, in favour of a Conservative MP.
“The fact that my voice is being silenced in the committee after not having an opportunity to put in witnesses is deeply offensive, deeply violent and deeply troubling,” Gazan said.
“I’m disgusted because I wasn’t given a chance to put forward witnesses when I’m representing ground zero for murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls.”
Alexander then left the committee room in tears. Walker followed, after shouting at the committee.
The meeting was adjourned minutes later.
In an interview with Postmedia, Alexander said Liberal MP Vandenbeld wrongly suggested she was asked to testify in order to bolster the Conservative message.
Alexander said she is non-political and has worked with the Ontario NDP to advance reforms and supports the Bloc Québécois in its efforts to not allow judges to toss out violent criminal cases because of delays.
“It was triggering,” she said, demanding an apology.
Vandenbeld has since released a statement saying, “I deeply regret the distress that this meeting caused the witnesses.”
On Wednesday, Vandenbeld released another statement, revealing that she closed her constituency office “because I fear for my safety and that of my staff” and that her car license plate was posted online.
Atwin said she’s received messages this week calling her “a traitor to Canada, disgusting, a hypocrite.”
“How did we get to this point?” Vandenbeld said.
“I believe that what has happened in recent months in the status of women committee is a case study in how our parliamentary institutions are being deliberately dismantled, and those who defend them or call it out are being targeted, attacked, silenced and intimidated into leaving political office.
“The traps that are being set by the far-right, their willingness to use anyone’s pain to achieve political ends, and a capitulation by the media to click-bait have made it impossible to protect and defend parliamentary processes or basic fairness.”
In a statement, Conservative MP and committee member Michelle Ferreri said the Liberals pulled “a heartless stunt” to shut down discussion of the government’s justice policies.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre’s press secretary Sam Lilly also reached out to Brunswick News in the aftermath of the committee hearing to say “this so-called feminist government chose to shut down the Status of Women Committee, playing politics at the expense of finding common sense solutions to rising violence against women.”
“Liberal MP Jenica Atwin shockingly moved to shut down testimony from victims and police who were in place and ready to continue speaking about the disastrous results of Trudeau’s catch and release policies,” Lilly said.
“The Liberals and NDP were so afraid of a committee study into this issue that the political math of publicly silencing the voices of women victims and advocates and telling them to go home was more favourable than the galling numbers that could have been revealed in this study.”
The mother of witness Cait Alexander has since issued a letter calling out Liberal, New Democrat and Conservative politicians for a “disgusting” partisan display.
“I taught six- to eight-year-olds for 31 years and I have never seen such self-serving, abusive, poorly behaved people in my life,” Carolyn Alexander wrote. “You are not children. You are the voted-in leaders that can effect positive change on the lives of all Canadians. Do that!”
Brunswick News reported on the new Statistics Canada crime data on the day of its release last month.
It showed police-reported crime in New Brunswick is up over the last year.
A total of 54,983 crimes were reported to police in New Brunswick last year, according to the statistical agency.
That’s up from 52,131 in 2022 and 51,061 in 2021.
The increase in the province was driven by another increase in property crimes, but it also showed that sexual assault “level 1” reports in New Brunswick, which involve minor physical injuries or no injuries to the victim, reached a record high in 2023 totalling 846.
That’s up from 823 in 2022 and 736 in 2021, while also being the highest total in the data that has been collected for over two decades.
Sexual assault “level 2” reports, those involving a weapon or bodily harm, are also significantly up, doubling from seven in 2022 to 14 last year.
The increase is in line with 2021 numbers, when 13 sexual assault level 2s were reported.
But while the crime rate measures the volume of crime, a severity index measures both the volume and severity of crime.
New Brunswick’s crime severity index declined year over year by one percentage point, after dropping two per cent in the previous year.
Significantly contributing to that decline was an overall drop in homicides, with nine recorded in 2023, compared to 15 in 2022, and 11 in 2021. The number of attempted murders was also relatively flat, with 17 in 2023, compared to 16 the year prior.
Atwin said she wants the committee to complete a fulsome review of the statistics.
But she fears that, nearing a year away from the next federal election, committee work won’t continue the way it should.
“I have a lot of concerns,” Atwin said. “I think all the committees are going to look like this, unfortunately.
“It sucks, because when I was in opposition, I wasn’t allowed to be on committees, and as soon as I was allowed to be on committees that’s where I feel I do my best work, getting to the nitty gritty of legislation, the clause by clause, hearing from witnesses, that’s the real work of Parliament.
“It’s really upsetting to see this is where we’re at. But sadly, I think these games are going to continue.”

Witnesses storm out of House committee in tears, decrying Liberal politicization
MP tried to steer conversation away from domestic violence, toward abortion
Two witnesses stormed out of a parliamentary committee meeting today after Liberals tried to steer a planned discussion about violence against women towards the topic of abortion rights.
The rare summer hearing of the House of Commons status of women committee was organized so MPs could hear from advocates and a deputy chief of the Peel Regional Police.
Though witnesses set out to sombrely argue that the current justice and bail system is failing victims, the session quickly derailed into a mess of political bickering.
During an opening statement, Cait Alexander, who heads up the advocacy group End Violence Everywhere, shared her personal story as her family looked on in a public seating area.
"I'm supposed to be dead," she said, showing MPs graphic photos of abuse she suffered at the hands of her ex-boyfriend three years ago.
"If you haven't met a survivor and a victim's family, well, now you have."
Before long, MPs were answering to Alexander's family for a partisan display that descended into procedural chaos. Her mother, frustrated, told the Liberal instigator that she was "disappointed" and that the whole thing amounted to another instance of abuse.
It began just a few minutes after opening statements from Alexander, advocate Megan Walker and Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich, and after a first question-and-answer round for Conservative MP Michelle Ferreri.
Liberal MP Anita Vandenbeld was given the floor next. After making a brief statement about the federal government taking the issue seriously, the Ottawa MP chastened Conservatives for politicizing the issue and accused them of leaving little time for other parties to prepare — and no ability to recommend witnesses.
"We do not use victims and survivors of trauma to try and score political points in this committee," she pronounced.
"I think it's cruel to have people relive the trauma that they've endured just to be able to have a meeting that — if it's not agreed to — then there's all kinds of social media [saying] that Liberals or others don't care about this issue. Which, as we all know, we do very deeply."

to her being heckled by witnesses. (Adrian Wyld/The Canadian Press)
'Did she listen to anything that was said?'
Instead of pivoting back to discussing the topic at hand with witnesses, Vandenbeld went on to move that the committee instead resume a different discussion about abortion rights.
The witnesses, left hanging, began heckling Vandenbeld.
Alexander held up the photos of her wounds again. Walker, visibly upset, said: "This is the problem. Did she listen to anything that was said this morning?"
The microphone was not handed back to them. Instead, a lengthy back-and-forth between MPs ensued, with multiple points of order brought to the chair.
Leah Gazan, the NDP MP for Winnipeg Centre, argued that her voice was
being 'silenced' at Wednesday's committee. (Sean Kilpatrick/Canadian
Press)
NDP MP Leah Gazan accused the Conservative committee chair, Shelby Kramp-Neuman, of failing to give her the floor and favouring her Tory colleague instead.
"The fact that my voice is being silenced in the committee after not having an opportunity to put in witnesses is deeply offensive, deeply violent and deeply troubling," Gazan said.
"I'm disgusted because I wasn't given a chance to put forward witnesses when I'm representing ground zero for murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls."
'Sorry isn't good enough'
Not long after that, Alexander stormed out of the room in tears. Walker turned her back on the committee and followed.
Conservative MP Anna Roberts said she was "disgusted in this whole day," and apologized to the two.
Ferreri blasted Vandenbeld and said the victims came to testify in order to bring about "legitimate change."
She said the committee should hold more meetings on the topic to hear from other witnesses, and apologized to Alexander's mother, who stood behind the witness table.
"'Sorry' isn't good enough — we've heard 'sorry,"' Alexander's mother responded.
The meeting adjourned shortly thereafter.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Former MLA and Cabinet Minister Announces Fredericton Ward 2 Council Bid
Fredericton, NB March 23, 2026 — Former MLA and provincial cabinet minister Donald Arseneault has announced that he will seek election on May 11, 2026, to Fredericton City Council representing Ward 2.
With a background in provincial government and public service, Arseneault says the campaign will focus on practical solutions to support residents, strengthen neighbourhoods, and help Fredericton continue to grow responsibly. Running under the campaign slogan “Excited. Energized. Effective.”, he is looking forward to connecting with residents and bringing his experience in public service to City Hall.
“I’m running because Fredericton is a city with tremendous potential, but residents are feeling the pressure from rising costs of living, challenges accessing health care, and concerns about community safety,” said Arseneault. “Ward 2 deserves effective advocacy and collaborative leadership that delivers real results.”
If elected, Arseneault will focus on practical priorities that matter to residents and families in Ward 2, including:
• Advocating for fair and sustainable property taxes for homeowners, renters, and businesses;
• Working with the Province to develop a Fredericton health-care recruitment strategy that attracts, supports, and retains doctors, nurses, and other primary care providers;
• Promoting safer neighbourhoods through increased police monitoring and stronger neighbourhood watch programs;
• Supporting city infrastructure, including expanded trails, recreational facilities, and greenspaces for families; and
• Encouraging a business-friendly environment through fair zoning and land-use rules and faster permitting and licensing processes.
Arseneault also emphasized the importance of supporting frontline services and strengthening Fredericton’s downtown.
“I will tackle these priorities while supporting first responders so they can effectively provide critical services; while also prioritizing investments that both restore and revitalize our city’s downtown,” he said.
Over the coming weeks, Arseneault said he looks forward to meeting residents throughout Ward 2 to hear their ideas and concerns and welcomes residents to reach out directly. A fully bilingual campaign website can be found at www.donaldarseneault.ca with additional information and ways to get involved.

A full list of candidates is available on the Elections N.B. website.
Incumbent Mayors Acclaimed (20 municipalities):
- Alnwick (Ernest Yvon Robichaud)

• Advocating for fair and sustainable property taxes for homeowners, renters, and businesses;
• Working with the Province to develop a Fredericton health-care recruitment strategy that attracts, supports, and retains doctors, nurses, and other primary care providers;
• Promoting safer neighbourhoods through increased police monitoring and stronger neighbourhood watch programs;

Subject: Yo Mr Minister Byrne I talked to your mindless lawyer SNB
Claude Poirer again he told me to get a lawyer and sue SNB
Robin you will enjoy this email These are the dumb bastards who stole
my old Harley with the Yankee wiretap tapes in its saddlebags. They
have no idea how important that old bike is to me or who I have been
talking to about it or them them. Now thats funny Everybody and his
dog knows how I love to sue lawyers. Hell I even introduced the dumb
bastards to the evil zionist Barry K. Winters last fall before the
NBPower Bullshit started and still the pricks did nothing all winter.
I must ask you why EH Greggy Baby Byrne did you really think the
zionists dare to kill me now after all the shit that went down over
Bernie Madoff?
The dumb French lawyer in Moncton does not have to ask me twice to sue
SNB. Hell I will sue Poirier and you personally just out of principal.
You are both officers of the court and swore to uphold the law not
assist in the coverup of murder and many other crime. Furthermore all
youand your blogger butt buddy Chucky Leblanc had hard copy of my
material since 2004 because he was too much of a chickenshit to give
my material to Brad Green as he promised Correct Greggy Baby?
The RCMP, the SNB, Capital Towing and the Fat Fred City finest all
played a hand in stealing my old Harley in 2007 and some Yankee police
surveilance wiretap tapes in its saddlebag. I hear the tapes are now
missing surprise surprise EH? At least the bike still exists but is
getting in rough shape because the bastard left it out in the weather
for years. However everybody knows I have many more wiretap tapes
stashed in Canada and the USA and that i can fix any motorcycycle. It
is YOUR fault that the SNB lawyer is acting so cocky N'esy Pas Greggy
Baby?
Veritas Vincit
DavidRaymond Amos
P.S I didn't bother telling the mindless Piorier about the shit that
went down in NewYork after I talked to all of you bastards last year.
I was just trying to get my Harley back before we started arguing in
court tis all because my friend told me Alan MacPhee was threatening
to squash it soon. You really should make sure that THAT DOES NOT
HAPPEN EH SHAWNY BABY GRAHAM?
If the idiot claude Poiier bumps into former Minister Mikey Murphy
maybe he will explain why he gave up his dream job because he didn't
