Fredericton police arrested two people at gunpoint in a
high-risk takedown in the city's busy downtown on Thursday at about 5:25
p.m.
The two men were in a car stopped on Westmorland Street, between King and Queen streets, south of the bridge when an unmarked police truck quickly blocked the vehicle.
Four police officers armed with carbines and wearing camouflage clothing surrounded the vehicle, making the two people get out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
Other officers, including some wearing major crime unit jackets, were also assisting in the arrests.
Neither man resisted arrest when they got out of the vehicle and were put on the ground to be handcuffed.
The police halted traffic driving toward the Westmorland Street
Bridge during the arrests. Police searched the trunk of the vehicle
before it was moved.
Alycia Bartlett, a police spokeswoman, offered few details on the nature of the late afternoon arrests.
"Police did conduct a high-risk takedown, last evening on Westmorland Street," she said.
"One person was arrested, and is currently in custody as part of an ongoing investigation."
The police said the man in custody has not appeared in court.
A second person, who was arrested, has been released, according to the police.
Bartlett said the police would not comment on the nature of the ongoing investigation.
