Moncton PC supporters excited about 'top-notch candidate' Moira Kelly Murphy
Lawyer seeks nomination to run against Liberal Finance Minister Cathy Rogers in Moncton South
Progressive
Conservatives in Moncton are buzzing about someone they consider a star
candidate for their party in this fall's election.
Lawyer Moira Kelly Murphy met with PC supporters Monday night to tell them she will seek the party nomination in Moncton South, where she'd be trying to unseat Liberal Finance Minister Cathy Rogers.
Lawyer Moira Kelly Murphy met with PC supporters Monday night to tell them she will seek the party nomination in Moncton South, where she'd be trying to unseat Liberal Finance Minister Cathy Rogers.
Adding to the
frisson of excitement is that Kelly Murphy is the spouse of former
Liberal cabinet minister Mike Murphy, who ran for the Liberal leadership
in 2012 against future premier Brian Gallant.
"She's a top-notch candidate even without her association with Mike Murphy," said Charles Doucet, a former NDP candidate in Moncton who has now joined the PC party.
He said word of her decision has been "a shot in the arm" for Moncton-area Tories.
"I let it slip to a few people around me and nobody could believe it."
Doucet posted the news of her candidacy on Facebook on Monday night, along with photos from the evening gathering.
"I can't imagine this is a secret anymore," he said. "I don't think I let the cat out of the bag."
Kelly Murphy did not respond to calls and emails Tuesday seeking her comment.
She created a Twitter account last month and has used it mainly to criticize Gallant's Liberal government and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal administration in Ottawa.
Doucet said about 30 to 40 people attended the Monday night event, including several PC MLAs and some Liberals.
The Moncton South PC nominating convention is scheduled for March 26 and the deadline for candidates to officially declare is March 12.
Rogers won the seat in 2014 with 45 per cent of the vote, defeating the incumbent PC MLA Sue Stultz by more than 600 votes.

@berkeleyfleming Whats a Tim's???
David Amos
@berkeleyfleming Not long ago
the ex NDP boss Dominic Cardy and several of his newfound Conservative
cohorts sent me a bunch of Tim Bits in the mail with a signed note.
In response I fed the treats to a stray cat I named after his new boss and published the note in my blog.
My obvious question is why would anyone have any faith in this motley crew of candidates from other parties who want to run our province?

Sterling Wright
No question she will make the race in that riding interesting if nothing else
David Amos
@Sterling Wright I find this incredibly comical
Mac Isaac
This is exactly what I've
been warning other Liberals about: with an aging population New
Brunswick is becoming even more conservative and Conservative. It's the
nature of people as they age...some become even more set in their
political dogma while most of the rest of us find ourselves leaning more
to the right side. With all the promises made but not kept and the
amount of money spent with no real plans for adding to our treasury it's
only natural that this would give pause to those of us who want to
believe but aren't given much for which we can hope. Ms Kelly Murphy is,
I think, typical of this move away from the Liberal fold.
David Amos
@Mac Isaac Call me crazy all you wish but please keep on whining I love it

A "frission of excitement"
over yet another lawyer moving into politics. Wow! When one notes how
many lawyers have failed to accomplish much of anything as MLAs or
cabinet ministers, I think the frission of excitement should be reserved
for plumbers and carpenters and, well....anyone but lawyers.
David Amos
@Douglas James "well....anyone but lawyers"
I concur
I concur
Ray Bungay
Nice pick the Liberals off one riding at a time. Good luck!
David Amos
@Ray Bungay An ex liberal lawyer is introduced by an ex NDP dude to run for the Conservatives? Too too funny indeed.
Mike Sampson
The story never mentioned her
political philosophy. Is she for reducing the size of government,
eliminating costly and unaffordable duality of services? I am guessing
her political philosophy is like every other New Brunswick politician.
What do I have to say to get elected and what party gives me the best
chance at feeding at the trough.
David Amos
@Mike Sampson YUP
Gabriel Boucher
Can we hear about the other
candidates please? Kinda tired of hearing about the blue and red parties
already. They shown us how badly they're governing our province for
decades now. It's no longer an option anymore.

How do people get sucked in
to running for these deadbeat do nothing parties? Has to be the easy
life and the big pension they are after. If they aren't already corrupt
by the time they get in, they will be ,in short order, or they will be
kicked out of the party.

David Amos
@Mike Bookman Ernie who?
Marc LeBlanc
@David Amos So who's running against Ernie?None other than an Atlantic Lottery manager.
The last audit by the AG's of the 4 Atlantic provinces showed that ALC managers were approving their own expense accounts as well they lied to their board of directors. As none of these managers were identified there's no way to tell who we could be voting for here. The Liberals made a huge mistake approving that candidate. At least you can trust Ernie.

kelly sherrard
I applaud Moira. The #1
priority is to have candidates who work for their constituents not
ignoring them the way the Liberal MLAs have behaved for the last 3
years. There are no words to describe who the Gallant Liberals have
behaved during their term. Ignoring concerns of taxpayers and behaving
as if they are always right and everyone else in the province has a
problem until everything blows up in their faces then they blame the
Conservatives because they have no excuse. The Liberals have to go
provincially. If it were up to me, the Liberal party would be outlawed
for a lengthy period until they smarten up and learn how to behave.
With this in mind, they may never hold another seat in this province
again.
David Amos
@kelly sherrard I recall
Murphy's hubby quitting his dream job as a Liberal Attorney General in
order to "spend time with the family" then changed his mind and wanted
to be the next Liberal Premier.
Now a former NDP dude thinks Mikey's dearly beloved is gonna save the PCs?
Methinks I know what the #1 priority of lawyers is and it certainly is what concerns the taxpayers but from the opposite point of view N'esy Pas?

Hmmmm.....top notch is a very
questionable term . Her husband was blackballed by the liberal party ,
so if she wants to get a place at the taxpayer funded trough ; then
joining the PCs was her only real option . There is little question that
Gallant is going out , so there will be lots of folks who will be
motivated to jump on the PC bandwagon so that they can fill their
pockets with taxpayer cash . Hopefully Blaine Higgs can keep these
people under control .

However if you were to post something positive about liberals perhaps CBC will give you a job and then the liberals can claim they are reducing unemployment by hiring more spin doctors.

election. I look forward to reading the profiles of the Green Party and

@Mario Doucet I doubt that Mr

On hold: 900 property owners await late tax bills
Service New Brunswick doing additional quality control, says Serge Rousselle
Almost
900 New Brunswick property owners will be waiting until April 1 to see
their property assessments, and their tax bills, for 2018.

David Amos
@stephen blunston Need I say that NB Power and the Attorney General Serge Rousselle who featured in this article as the Service New Brunswick Minister has a rather huge legal problem after having barred from the latest NBEUB Hearing?
stephen blunston
Service
New Brunswick Minister Serge Rousselle said that assessments for more
than 500 properties are going through "additional quality control
efforts," a feature that the auditor-general said was lacking during
last year's assessment fiasco.
Those will be on top of more than 300 owners whose 2017 assessments are still being reviewed for errors, a figure the Crown corporation revealed earlier this year.
Rousselle disclosed the new number at a news conference following the mailing of most of the province's 470,000 assessment notices and tax bills.
The assessments still on hold will be mailed out April 1, he said. They will also not appear on the government's online assessment database until its next update on April 10.
To quell the assessment controversy last year, the province froze all assessments for 2018. The only assessments that will change will be those that go down or those for properties that have been sold or have seen major renovations or expansions.
There's
no particular pattern to the assessments that have been delayed,
according to Service New Brunswick spokesperson Valerie Kilfoil
"There will be some that are frozen and some that fall into the exception categories," she said. "The additional 500-plus bills need to be reviewed by an assessor prior to establishing the 2018 value.
"Some of these will end up being exempt from the freeze due to new construction picked up on a sale, for example. Others will possibly end up being frozen as the assessor may not pick up any changes."
Kim MacPherson's audit said one of the perceived strengths of the modernization program was that aerial photography cut down on the costs of travel and quality control.
Last fall's report by MacPherson blamed the leadership of Service New Brunswick for "fast-tracking" the new assessment system, which produced thousands of errors last year.
The system incorrectly inflated property tax bills, but rather than catch and fix the mistakes, some officials made up renovation amounts on some homes to justify the inflated values.

They account for about 16 per cent of assessments, with about 84 per cent frozen.
Quality control required
Kim MacPherson's audit said one of the perceived strengths of the modernization program was that aerial photography cut down on the costs of travel and quality control.
But
MacPherson noted that guidelines published by the International
Association of Assessing Officers say that any data collection program
requires quality control.
Many
owners of properties with frozen assessments are still seeing higher
tax bills because the assessment, set by the province, is only part of
the formula. The other part is the tax rate, set by the municipality. If
it rises, the tax bill will go up.Last fall's report by MacPherson blamed the leadership of Service New Brunswick for "fast-tracking" the new assessment system, which produced thousands of errors last year.
The system incorrectly inflated property tax bills, but rather than catch and fix the mistakes, some officials made up renovation amounts on some homes to justify the inflated values.

Long ago I was taught an important rule it is as follows:
Everything is political and its always about the money.

Methinks CBC hates the simple truth if it embarrasses their liberal paymasters N'esy Pas?

worst company in Canada keeps bleeding money hasn't stop with increased
for 10 years and still cant get enough of our funds, and then get crazy
high salaries and bonuses that should be against the law for the ceo and
all the upper management must be nice to get a bonus for losing money
and running a company poorly

@stephen blunston Need I say that NB Power and the Attorney General Serge Rousselle who featured in this article as the Service New Brunswick Minister has a rather huge legal problem after having barred from the latest NBEUB Hearing?

Not exactly true. We had two properties whose assessments went up - one by 27% - despite no work having been completed on the properties. (on one we pulled permits in December, but have just started the work).

@Roy Nicholl Methinks the delay has more to do with which political party the taxpayer supports N'esy Pas?

Interesting theory, but seems rather implausible from the perspective of ability to execute.

@Roy Nicholl FYI CBC blocked my most important comment because they know who my Father was and who my Mother married next.

This is an ELECTION year , so
of course there will not be any tax increases . Brian Gallant and his U
de M buddies are in the pre-election spending mode as they try to buy
the election with the taxpayers own money . Spend , Spend , Spend ; and
then drive taxes through the roof if re-elected is the way Gallant
operates . Does Gallant or Rousselle really think that they are fooling
anybody with all their spending and fake promises ?

@David Amos MY CBC is desperate today EH?
Roland Godin
They each take their turn in
increasing taxes and each charge horrendous administration fees; this
year mostly municipalities rate increase, next year mostly provincial
assessment increase. And a lot is wasted on stepping on each other’s
projects, programs and services...et voilà.
