In 2011 Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada wrote, "since its launch in Canada in 2000, Epoch Times has become a popular source of information on issues and events of interest to the Chinese-Canadian community... With local editions published in Toronto, Vancouver, Montréal, Ottawa and Calgary/Edmonton, Epoch Times is today the largest daily newspaper of its kind in the country."[31]
Epoch Times is a multi-language newspaper [2] headquartered in New York City. The company was founded in 2000 by John Tang and a group of Chinese-American Falun Gong practitioners. The newspaper covers general interest topics with a focus on news about China and human rights issues there. It draws from a network of sources inside China, as well as Chinese expatriates living in the West.[3][4][5][6] The newspaper and its staff have won over 10 media awards, including New York Press Association Awards for Design Excellence[7] and National Ethnic Press & Media Council Awards for human rights coverage.[8]
The newspaper has been described by some scholars as a mouthpiece for Falun Gong,[9][10][11][12][13] connected with the group and carrying sympathetic coverage of it.[citation needed] A spokesperson for the newspaper says it does not speak for the practice.[14] The newspaper maintains a generally anti-communist editorial stance, including explicit opposition to the Communist Party of China.[9][15][16][17]
The Epoch Times is widely distributed in overseas Chinese communities, and has been publishing in Chinese since May 2000.[18] It is either sold or distributed free-of-charge in 35 countries, including various intranational regional editions. It has editions in English, Chinese and nine other languages in print,[19] as well as 21 different languages on the internet.[20] Weekly print editions are also available. A typical issue includes sections for world and national news, op-eds, sports, entertainment, business, arts and culture, travel, health and automobiles.[21] Epoch Times websites are blocked in mainland China,[18] however people can access Epoch Times via the group's China VPN using anti-censorship software such as Ultrasurf [22] or Freegate,[23] tools built by Chinese expatriates to overcome the Golden Shield, or the Great Firewall of China.[24]

Under the constraints of media censorship, people in China did not know, for example, what really happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989, and people outside China did not know the severity of the persecution of people with unapproved spiritual beliefs, such as Tibetans, Uyghurs, and Falun Gong practitioners. With the growing awareness that no one was telling the true stories about what was happening in China, John Tang and other Chinese-Americans founded Epoch Times in 2000. The story of Epoch Times is the story of those who wanted to meld their concern for their homeland with the freedoms afforded by America, such as freedom of the press and freedom of belief. The first edition was in Chinese, with English language editions hitting the streets starting in 2004. As the current president of Epoch Times, John Tang now works to have editions published in 21 languages and in 35 countries. Wherever they are, Epoch Times editions tell the stories about China that other media cannot, or will not. Covering China With InsightYou may see a greater quantity of coverage of China in other newspapers, but you will certainly see quality of insight into China in Epoch Times that you cannot find elsewhere. Foreign media companies with bureaus and correspondents in China seem to have greater access and latitude than in the past, but they can have permission revoked without notice, and as a result they self-censor assiduously.
