QUESTION: Well, I have two questions on Ukraine. Are you aware that Ukrainian authorities revoke accreditations of American journalists who do not cover the conflict in Ukraine the way they like? And there was an example of a New York Times reporter who had his accreditation revoked after he reported that Ukrainians used cluster munitions in this war? Have – has the State Department raised this issue with Ukrainian authorities?
MR PATEL: We engage with the – our Ukrainians partners on a number of issues. Of course, broadly, press freedom and access and appropriate access by journalists is something that we engage with directly with countries around the world. I will let our Ukrainian partners speak to whatever mechanisms that they have in place for their visaing and accrediting. That’s certainly not something that the U.S. would have visibility into.
QUESTION: Also, could you please explain why the State Department so far has been completely silent on the detainment of Gonzalo Lira. He is a U.S. citizen and journalist. Does the State Department has been very vocal when Evan Gershkovich was arrested, and so far we haven’t heard anything about Lira.
MR PATEL: Well, whenever an American citizen is detained abroad, we ensure to raise to, directly, with governments the ability for consular access and that they are affronted all basic access for consular notifications. But I don’t have any other specifics to offer there.

QUESTION: This just broke in The Washington Post today, and it kind of corroborates some other reports that have come out in the last couple months. It says the Biden administration was warned by a close ally several months before the Nord Stream attacks that the Ukrainian military was planning that sort of covert attack. So, if this is true, that the administration was being warned about this – and like I said, there’s been some other reports in the last couple months – why was the determination so strong in the beginning that this was Russia bombing its own pipeline?
MR PATEL: So, I’m not going to comment on or confirm reports about purported intelligence that includes information that even The Washington Post says that U.S. intelligence agencies were unable to corroborate. As it relates to the Nord Stream pipeline, several of our European partners – Germany, Sweden, and Denmark – have open investigations into what happened, and those investigations are ongoing. I’m not going to get ahead of that process, and we’ll refer you to those capitals to speak to the ongoing work happening there.

And we learned last night through a series of tweets by him that he had been tortured in the Ukrainian prison and he was now on a motorcycle with a broken rib trying to flee to the Hungarian border. And so I’m wondering, if this is true, given the State Department knew of his arrest and his detention, how has this been allowed to occur? We have a U.S. citizen being – being detained and perhaps tortured in the prison of one of our strongest allies.

Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., died Tuesday after a more than two-year
bout with pancreatic cancer, NBC News confirmed.
Hastings, who served in the House for nearly three decades, was 84.
Throughout his career, he held several key committee assignments and
leadership positions, most recently as vice chairman of the rules
committee. He had also been Florida’s first Black federal trial judge,
appointed to the bench in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter.
“As an attorney, civil rights activist and judge, and over his nearly
thirty years in Congress, he fought tirelessly to create opportunities
to lift up working families, communities of color, children and
immigrants,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote in a statement.
President Joe Biden reacted to Hastings’ death on Tuesday afternoon.
“Across his long career of public service, Alcee always stood up to
fight for equality, and always showed up for the working people he
represented,” he said in a statement. “Jill and I are saddened to
learn of his passing.”
Democrats now hold a narrower advantage in the House, 218-211, giving
the party a smaller margin of error in passing legislation. Six seats
are vacant, four of which were previously held by Democrats and two by
Republicans.
Three of the four Democratic House seats were vacated by appointments
to positions in President Joe Biden’s Cabinet. Deb Haaland, of New
Mexico, was appointed secretary of the Department of Interior; Marcia
Fudge, of Ohio, was named head of the Department of Housing and Urban
Development, and Cedric Richmond, of Louisiana, became senior advisor
to the president and director of the White House Office of Public
Engagement.
One of the two vacant GOP seats is no longer up for contest. Julia
Letlow of Louisiana was elected in late March but has yet to be sworn
in. Julia will replace her late husband, Luke Letlow, who was elected
to the seat but died before being sworn in due to Covid-19
complications.
In 1983, when Hastings was a federal judge, he was acquitted in
criminal court on a charge of conspiring to solicit a bribe in
exchange for leniency in a sentencing.

Nevertheless, the House impeached Hastings in 1988 amid accusations
that he perjured himself during that criminal trial. The Senate voted
to convict him, removing him from the bench, but did not vote to
disqualify him from holding future office.
Hastings appealed the impeachment conviction in 1992. A federal judge
overturned the conviction, on the grounds that a 12-member Senate
committee, rather than the full Senate, conducted the impeachment
trial. This was the first time a Senate conviction was overturned by a
federal judge.
The next year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled federal courts do not have
the authority to review the procedures of a Senate impeachment trial.
Hastings’ legislative career, which began with his election in 1992
and continued until his death, was unaffected by the decision.

KYIV, UKRAINE -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday
accused Moscow of building up troops on his country's border as the
United States warned Russia against "intimidating" Ukraine.
Kiev has been locked in a conflict with Russian-backed separatists
since 2014, and this week Ukrainian officials reported Russian troop
movement in annexed Crimea and on the border, near territories
controlled by Moscow-backed separatists.
On Thursday, Zelensky's ministers discussed the escalating security
situation with Western allies including U.S. Secretary of Defence
Lloyd Austin.
"Muscle-flexing in the form of military exercises and possible
provocations along the border are traditional Russian games," Zelensky
said in a statement.
He accused Moscow of seeking to create "a threatening atmosphere" as
Kiev hopes to resume a ceasefire brokered last year.
The U.S. State Department said it was "absolutely concerned by recent
escalations of Russian aggressive and provocative actions in eastern
Ukraine."
"What we would object to are aggressive actions that have an intent of
intimidating, of threatening, our partner Ukraine," State Department
spokesman Ned Price told reporters.
Some observers say the reported Russian troop buildup is a test for
the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden, who caused an uproar
in Moscow last month by calling his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin
a "killer".
This week, Moscow and Kyiv blamed each other for a rise in violence
between government forces and Kremlin-backed separatists in eastern
Ukraine, which has undermined the ceasefire.
Zelensky said 20 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed and 57 wounded
since the start of the year.
Separately, the military announced that a Ukrainian soldier was
wounded in an attack it blamed on separatists.
'READY FOR AN OFFENSIVE'
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of Defence Austin called his Ukrainian
counterpart Andriy Taran, Ukraine's defence ministry said.
Austin said during the call that Washington would "not leave Ukraine
alone in the event of escalating Russian aggression", the ministry
said.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba for his part discussed the
"aggravation by the Russian Federation of the security situation" on
the frontline with his Canadian counterpart Marc Garneau.
Ukraine's military intelligence accused Russia of preparing to "expand
its military presence" in the separatist-controlled eastern regions of
Donetsk and Lugansk.
In a statement, the intelligence service said it "does not rule out"
an attempt by Russian forces to move "deep into Ukrainian territory".
A high-ranking Ukrainian government official, speaking on condition of
anonymity, claimed that the Russian army was practising "military
co-ordination" with separatists.
"From mid-April their combat units will be ready for an offensive,"
the official told AFP.
WEST SHOULD NOT 'WORRY'
Moscow has repeatedly denied sending troops and arms to buttress the
separatists and Putin's spokesman stressed on Thursday that Moscow is
at liberty to move troops across its territory.
"The Russian Federation moves its armed forces within its territory at
its discretion," spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, but he did
not directly confirm a troop buildup on the Ukrainian border.
He added that "it should not worry anyone and does not pose a threat to anyone".
The war in eastern Ukraine broke out in 2014 when Russia annexed the
Crimean peninsula following a bloody uprising that ousted Ukraine's
Kremlin-friendly president Viktor Yanukovych.
On Wednesday, the Pentagon said U.S. forces in Europe had raised their
alert status following the "recent escalations of Russian aggression
in eastern Ukraine".
Mark Milley, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, also spoke
with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, Valery Gerasimov and
Ruslan Khomchak.
Khomchak said this week that 28,000 separatist fighters and "more than
2,000 Russian military instructors and advisers" are currently
stationed in eastern Ukraine.
On Thursday, the deputy head of Zelensky's office, Roman Mashovets,
called for joint drills with NATO forces to "help stabilise the
security situation".
Zelensky was elected in 2019 promising to end the years-long conflict,
but critics say a shaky ceasefire was his only tangible achievement.
The fighting has claimed more than 13,000 lives since 2014, according
to the United Nations.

(CNN)Top US national security officials have spoken with their
Ukrainian counterparts, and America's top general held a call
Wednesday with his Russian opposite number amid concern over Russian
military activity in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, including what the US
deemed a violation of a ceasefire by Moscow that led to the deaths of
four Ukrainian soldiers last week.
"Russia's destabilizing actions undermine the de-escalation intentions
that had been achieved through [last year's agreement]," chief
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday. "Additionally, we are
aware of Ukrainian military reports concerning Russian troop movements
on Ukraine's borders."
Secretary of State Tony Blinken reaffirmed the "unwavering support" of
the United States for Ukraine's territorial integrity in the face of
"Russia's ongoing aggression in the Donbas and Crimea," according to a
readout of his call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba
Wednesday. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley also
spoke to the top Ukrainian general Wednesday, while national security
adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart at the
beginning of the week.
The Pentagon had grown increasingly concerned after military
intelligence reports assessed that some 4,000 heavily armed Russian
forces had been observed moving in Crimea, according to a US defense
official. "It was not totally clear what they were up to," the
official said, adding that the US now believes on further assessment
it may have been part of a Russian military exercise. Part of that
assessment was based on calls with Ukrainian officials who also viewed
the Russian activity as an exercise.
If so, the movement of so many Russian military personnel was a large
exercise and may be a deliberate message from the Kremlin to the Biden
administration about Russia's strength in the region and its ability
to challenge US allies, the official said.
This comes as NATO countries on Monday scrambled jets 10 times to
track an unusually high level of Russian military flights over a large
area of Europe including the North Sea, the Black Sea and the Baltic
Sea. NATO jets wound up conducting six intercepts in a six-hour
period.
The Biden administration is taking a tougher approach to Russia, and
Ukraine is only the latest source of tension between the two
adversaries. The White House unveiled a raft of sanctions against
Russian officials and entities at the beginning of the month over the
poisoning of opposition leader Alexey Navalny. President Joe Biden
then warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin would "pay a price"
for his efforts to undermine the 2020 US elections and went on to call
Putin a "killer." Meanwhile, the administration is expected to impose
more sanctions on Russia over election interference and the SolarWinds
cyberattack.

On Wednesday, Milley spoke with his Russian counterpart, Gen. Valery
Gerasimov. While the topics the two generals discussed have not been
made public, behind the scenes the Defense Department has been
concerned for the last several days about the build-up of Russian
troops and equipment along the Ukraine border. The Defense Department
recently raised the so-called "watch condition level" on that region
to gather updated intelligence assessments on Russian activity and
intentions, while monitoring any potential threats. The New York Times
was first to report that development.
Russia blamed Ukraine for renewed fighting in eastern Ukraine. Kremlin
spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this week that Russia was concerned about
"Ukraine's provocations," but he said he hoped it would not escalate
to fighting.
But Ukraine warned of a series of Russian violations of the ceasefire,
including two incidents of mortar fire and large-caliber machine gun
fire that led to the death of the four Ukrainian soldiers last Friday.
On Tuesday, Ukraine accused Russia of violating the ceasefire seven
times, prompting the country's parliament to call for an increase in
political and economic pressure on Moscow.

(CNN)NATO scrambled fighter jets 10 times Monday to track and
intercept an unusually "rare peak" of Russian bombers and fighters
flying over the North Sea, Black Sea and Baltic Sea, according to a
NATO official.
"NATO aircraft intercepted six different groups of Russian military
aircraft near alliance airspace in less than six hours," the
organization said in a statement.
The Russian activity across an unusually wide area of European skies
came on the same day North American Aerospace Defense Command said it
tracked Russian aircraft off the coast of Alaska.
None of the Russian aircraft entered the national airspace of NATO
nations in Europe and the intercepts were considered safe, but an
alliance statement detailed the activity.
Norwegian F-16s scrambled after radars detected two groups of Russian
military aircraft near Norway's coastline. The Norwegians intercepted
two Tu-95 Bear bombers which flew south over the North Sea. That
prompted the United Kingdom to send up Typhoon aircraft and Belgium to
deploy F-16 fighters.
The Norwegian F-16s later intercepted two Tu-160 bombers over
international waters nearby.
Separately, NATO radars detected three Russian military aircraft near
allied airspace over the Black Sea which were tracked by Turkish,
Romanian and Bulgarian fighters aircraft until they left the area.
In another encounter, NATO said Italian fighter jets intercepted a
Russian II-38 maritime patrol aircraft which was already being
escorted by Russian fighter jets over the Baltic Sea flying from
Kaliningrad.
CNN reported Saturday that the US is preparing to carry out a
classified war game this summer where a major focus of the scenarios
will be how the US should respond to aggressive action and unexpected
moves by China and Russia.
Tensions with Russia are high, and last week, Secretary of State
Antony Blinken called out Russia for "reckless and adversarial
actions" at a NATO meeting in Brussels and observed that Moscow has
"built up a forces, large scale exercises and acts of intimidation, in
the Baltic and Black Sea."
"Intercepting multiple groups of Russian aircraft demonstrates NATO
forces' readiness and capability to guard Allied skies 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, 365 days a year," Brig. Gen. Andrew Hansen, deputy
chief of staff operations at Allied Air Command, said in the NATO
statement.
NATO aircraft scrambled more than 400 times in 2020 to intercept
unknown aircraft according to the alliance. About 90 percent were in
response to flights by Russian aircraft. NATO says Russian flights
often pose a risk to civilian air traffic over Europe because the
Russians often fly without transmitting a transponder code indicating
their position and altitude and do not file a flight plan or
communicate with air traffic controllers.

Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., died Tuesday after a more than two-year
bout with pancreatic cancer, NBC News confirmed.
Hastings, who served in the House for nearly three decades, was 84.
Throughout his career, he held several key committee assignments and
leadership positions, most recently as vice chairman of the rules
committee. He had also been Florida’s first Black federal trial judge,
appointed to the bench in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter.
“As an attorney, civil rights activist and judge, and over his nearly
thirty years in Congress, he fought tirelessly to create opportunities
to lift up working families, communities of color, children and
immigrants,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote in a statement.
President Joe Biden reacted to Hastings’ death on Tuesday afternoon.
“Across his long career of public service, Alcee always stood up to
fight for equality, and always showed up for the working people he
represented,” he said in a statement. “Jill and I are saddened to
learn of his passing.”
Democrats now hold a narrower advantage in the House, 218-211, giving
the party a smaller margin of error in passing legislation. Six seats
are vacant, four of which were previously held by Democrats and two by
Republicans.
Three of the four Democratic House seats were vacated by appointments
to positions in President Joe Biden’s Cabinet. Deb Haaland, of New
Mexico, was appointed secretary of the Department of Interior; Marcia
Fudge, of Ohio, was named head of the Department of Housing and Urban
Development, and Cedric Richmond, of Louisiana, became senior advisor
to the president and director of the White House Office of Public
Engagement.
One of the two vacant GOP seats is no longer up for contest. Julia
Letlow of Louisiana was elected in late March but has yet to be sworn
in. Julia will replace her late husband, Luke Letlow, who was elected
to the seat but died before being sworn in due to Covid-19
complications.
In 1983, when Hastings was a federal judge, he was acquitted in
criminal court on a charge of conspiring to solicit a bribe in
exchange for leniency in a sentencing.

Nevertheless, the House impeached Hastings in 1988 amid accusations
that he perjured himself during that criminal trial. The Senate voted
to convict him, removing him from the bench, but did not vote to
disqualify him from holding future office.
Hastings appealed the impeachment conviction in 1992. A federal judge
overturned the conviction, on the grounds that a 12-member Senate
committee, rather than the full Senate, conducted the impeachment
trial. This was the first time a Senate conviction was overturned by a
federal judge.
The next year, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled federal courts do not have
the authority to review the procedures of a Senate impeachment trial.
Hastings’ legislative career, which began with his election in 1992
and continued until his death, was unaffected by the decision.

KYIV, UKRAINE -- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday
accused Moscow of building up troops on his country's border as the
United States warned Russia against "intimidating" Ukraine.
Kiev has been locked in a conflict with Russian-backed separatists
since 2014, and this week Ukrainian officials reported Russian troop
movement in annexed Crimea and on the border, near territories
controlled by Moscow-backed separatists.
On Thursday, Zelensky's ministers discussed the escalating security
situation with Western allies including U.S. Secretary of Defence
Lloyd Austin.
"Muscle-flexing in the form of military exercises and possible
provocations along the border are traditional Russian games," Zelensky
said in a statement.
He accused Moscow of seeking to create "a threatening atmosphere" as
Kiev hopes to resume a ceasefire brokered last year.
The U.S. State Department said it was "absolutely concerned by recent
escalations of Russian aggressive and provocative actions in eastern
Ukraine."
"What we would object to are aggressive actions that have an intent of
intimidating, of threatening, our partner Ukraine," State Department
spokesman Ned Price told reporters.
Some observers say the reported Russian troop buildup is a test for
the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden, who caused an uproar
in Moscow last month by calling his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin
a "killer".
This week, Moscow and Kyiv blamed each other for a rise in violence
between government forces and Kremlin-backed separatists in eastern
Ukraine, which has undermined the ceasefire.
Zelensky said 20 Ukrainian servicemen had been killed and 57 wounded
since the start of the year.
Separately, the military announced that a Ukrainian soldier was
wounded in an attack it blamed on separatists.
'READY FOR AN OFFENSIVE'
On Thursday, U.S. Secretary of Defence Austin called his Ukrainian
counterpart Andriy Taran, Ukraine's defence ministry said.
Austin said during the call that Washington would "not leave Ukraine
alone in the event of escalating Russian aggression", the ministry
said.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba for his part discussed the
"aggravation by the Russian Federation of the security situation" on
the frontline with his Canadian counterpart Marc Garneau.
Ukraine's military intelligence accused Russia of preparing to "expand
its military presence" in the separatist-controlled eastern regions of
Donetsk and Lugansk.
In a statement, the intelligence service said it "does not rule out"
an attempt by Russian forces to move "deep into Ukrainian territory".
A high-ranking Ukrainian government official, speaking on condition of
anonymity, claimed that the Russian army was practising "military
co-ordination" with separatists.
"From mid-April their combat units will be ready for an offensive,"
the official told AFP.
WEST SHOULD NOT 'WORRY'
Moscow has repeatedly denied sending troops and arms to buttress the
separatists and Putin's spokesman stressed on Thursday that Moscow is
at liberty to move troops across its territory.
"The Russian Federation moves its armed forces within its territory at
its discretion," spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, but he did
not directly confirm a troop buildup on the Ukrainian border.
He added that "it should not worry anyone and does not pose a threat to anyone".
The war in eastern Ukraine broke out in 2014 when Russia annexed the
Crimean peninsula following a bloody uprising that ousted Ukraine's
Kremlin-friendly president Viktor Yanukovych.
On Wednesday, the Pentagon said U.S. forces in Europe had raised their
alert status following the "recent escalations of Russian aggression
in eastern Ukraine".
Mark Milley, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, also spoke
with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts, Valery Gerasimov and
Ruslan Khomchak.
Khomchak said this week that 28,000 separatist fighters and "more than
2,000 Russian military instructors and advisers" are currently
stationed in eastern Ukraine.
On Thursday, the deputy head of Zelensky's office, Roman Mashovets,
called for joint drills with NATO forces to "help stabilise the
security situation".
Zelensky was elected in 2019 promising to end the years-long conflict,
but critics say a shaky ceasefire was his only tangible achievement.
The fighting has claimed more than 13,000 lives since 2014, according
to the United Nations.

(CNN)Top US national security officials have spoken with their
Ukrainian counterparts, and America's top general held a call
Wednesday with his Russian opposite number amid concern over Russian
military activity in Crimea and eastern Ukraine, including what the US
deemed a violation of a ceasefire by Moscow that led to the deaths of
four Ukrainian soldiers last week.
"Russia's destabilizing actions undermine the de-escalation intentions
that had been achieved through [last year's agreement]," chief
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday. "Additionally, we are
aware of Ukrainian military reports concerning Russian troop movements
on Ukraine's borders."
Secretary of State Tony Blinken reaffirmed the "unwavering support" of
the United States for Ukraine's territorial integrity in the face of
"Russia's ongoing aggression in the Donbas and Crimea," according to a
readout of his call with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba
Wednesday. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley also
spoke to the top Ukrainian general Wednesday, while national security
adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart at the
beginning of the week.
The Pentagon had grown increasingly concerned after military
intelligence reports assessed that some 4,000 heavily armed Russian
forces had been observed moving in Crimea, according to a US defense
official. "It was not totally clear what they were up to," the
official said, adding that the US now believes on further assessment
it may have been part of a Russian military exercise. Part of that
assessment was based on calls with Ukrainian officials who also viewed
the Russian activity as an exercise.
If so, the movement of so many Russian military personnel was a large
exercise and may be a deliberate message from the Kremlin to the Biden
administration about Russia's strength in the region and its ability
to challenge US allies, the official said.
This comes as NATO countries on Monday scrambled jets 10 times to
track an unusually high level of Russian military flights over a large
area of Europe including the North Sea, the Black Sea and the Baltic
Sea. NATO jets wound up conducting six intercepts in a six-hour
period.
The Biden administration is taking a tougher approach to Russia, and
Ukraine is only the latest source of tension between the two
adversaries. The White House unveiled a raft of sanctions against
Russian officials and entities at the beginning of the month over the
poisoning of opposition leader Alexey Navalny. President Joe Biden
then warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin would "pay a price"
for his efforts to undermine the 2020 US elections and went on to call
Putin a "killer." Meanwhile, the administration is expected to impose
more sanctions on Russia over election interference and the SolarWinds
cyberattack.

On Wednesday, Milley spoke with his Russian counterpart, Gen. Valery
Gerasimov. While the topics the two generals discussed have not been
made public, behind the scenes the Defense Department has been
concerned for the last several days about the build-up of Russian
troops and equipment along the Ukraine border. The Defense Department
recently raised the so-called "watch condition level" on that region
to gather updated intelligence assessments on Russian activity and
intentions, while monitoring any potential threats. The New York Times
was first to report that development.
Russia blamed Ukraine for renewed fighting in eastern Ukraine. Kremlin
spokesman Dmitry Peskov said this week that Russia was concerned about
"Ukraine's provocations," but he said he hoped it would not escalate
to fighting.
But Ukraine warned of a series of Russian violations of the ceasefire,
including two incidents of mortar fire and large-caliber machine gun
fire that led to the death of the four Ukrainian soldiers last Friday.
On Tuesday, Ukraine accused Russia of violating the ceasefire seven
times, prompting the country's parliament to call for an increase in
political and economic pressure on Moscow.

(CNN)NATO scrambled fighter jets 10 times Monday to track and
intercept an unusually "rare peak" of Russian bombers and fighters
flying over the North Sea, Black Sea and Baltic Sea, according to a
NATO official.
"NATO aircraft intercepted six different groups of Russian military
aircraft near alliance airspace in less than six hours," the
organization said in a statement.
The Russian activity across an unusually wide area of European skies
came on the same day North American Aerospace Defense Command said it
tracked Russian aircraft off the coast of Alaska.
None of the Russian aircraft entered the national airspace of NATO
nations in Europe and the intercepts were considered safe, but an
alliance statement detailed the activity.
Norwegian F-16s scrambled after radars detected two groups of Russian
military aircraft near Norway's coastline. The Norwegians intercepted
two Tu-95 Bear bombers which flew south over the North Sea. That
prompted the United Kingdom to send up Typhoon aircraft and Belgium to
deploy F-16 fighters.
The Norwegian F-16s later intercepted two Tu-160 bombers over
international waters nearby.
Separately, NATO radars detected three Russian military aircraft near
allied airspace over the Black Sea which were tracked by Turkish,
Romanian and Bulgarian fighters aircraft until they left the area.
In another encounter, NATO said Italian fighter jets intercepted a
Russian II-38 maritime patrol aircraft which was already being
escorted by Russian fighter jets over the Baltic Sea flying from
Kaliningrad.
CNN reported Saturday that the US is preparing to carry out a
classified war game this summer where a major focus of the scenarios
will be how the US should respond to aggressive action and unexpected
moves by China and Russia.
Tensions with Russia are high, and last week, Secretary of State
Antony Blinken called out Russia for "reckless and adversarial
actions" at a NATO meeting in Brussels and observed that Moscow has
"built up a forces, large scale exercises and acts of intimidation, in
the Baltic and Black Sea."
"Intercepting multiple groups of Russian aircraft demonstrates NATO
forces' readiness and capability to guard Allied skies 24 hours a day,
7 days a week, 365 days a year," Brig. Gen. Andrew Hansen, deputy
chief of staff operations at Allied Air Command, said in the NATO
statement.
NATO aircraft scrambled more than 400 times in 2020 to intercept
unknown aircraft according to the alliance. About 90 percent were in
response to flights by Russian aircraft. NATO says Russian flights
often pose a risk to civilian air traffic over Europe because the
Russians often fly without transmitting a transponder code indicating
their position and altitude and do not file a flight plan or
communicate with air traffic controllers.

Gonzalo Ángel Quintilio Lira López ([ɣonˈsalo ˈaŋɣel kinˈtiljo lira ˈlopes], February 29, 1968 – January 12, 2024) was a Chilean-American novelist,[4] film director,[5] commentator,[6] YouTuber and life coach blogger. He was involved in the manosphere under the moniker of Coach Red Pill, posting anti-feminist content. As a resident of Kharkiv, Ukraine, he vlogged about the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine and was described as spreading Russian disinformation and propaganda.[7][8]
In April 2022, Lira briefly disappeared and claimed to have been detained by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).[9][10] On May 1, 2023 Lira was arrested and charged with creating and distributing material that justified the Russian invasion, which is illegal under Ukrainian law.[11][12] After his 2023 arrest, Lira was released on bail and attempted to flee the country. He was subsequently arrested again, dying in custody on January 12, 2024.[13][14]
Early life
Lira was born to Chilean parents in Burbank, California,[4] and grew up in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles; Guayaquil, Ecuador; and Santiago, Chile, among other places.[15] He graduated from Saint George's College, Santiago in 1985.[15] From 1985 until 1991, he worked as an English teacher and traveled in South America.[15] He entered Dartmouth College in 1991, graduating in 1995 with a bachelor's degree in history and philosophy.[16][15]
Career

Unsuccessful, he turned to writing novels.[15] In October 1996, Lira received a $1 million advance from G. P. Putnam's Sons for his first book, a commercial thriller entitled Counterparts, and a second novel to follow.[17] The unsolicited manuscript for Counterparts had been pulled from a slush pile by a literary agent and forwarded to editors at Putnam.[18]
Counterparts follows the exploits of a fierce female Federal Bureau of Investigation agent and her "counterpart", an ambitious Central Intelligence Agency operative.[19] In the San Francisco Examiner, critic Patricia Holt identified it as following a trend in mainstream commercial publishing of replacing what would conventionally be a male character with a female.[20] For Newsday, Jane Goldman wrote that it was "far-fetched and heartless... as arrogant and clever as its hero".[21] Ann Helmuth of the Orlando Sentinel panned the book.[22]
Prior to Counterparts, Lira had been working on a Spanish-language novel. He completed it in 1991 but the manuscript was initially rejected by publishers. Only after news of his publishing deal in the U.S. broke was he able to secure a Chilean publisher for the work. The coming-of-age novel, Tomáh Errázurih, was published by Grijalbo/Mondadori in 1997.[16][23]
In 1998, after moving to New York City, he wrote, produced, and directed a short comedy film, So Kinky.[15] He published a second English-language book, another commercial thriller titled Acrobat, in 2002, the movie rights to which were bought by Miramax.[24][25] In 2005, he filmed Secuestro in Chile, which came in second in the box office in Chile following its opening weekend.[26][27]
From 2010 to 2013, Lira published his thoughts on economics and other subjects on his blog, some of which were reposted by Business Insider,[5][28] though a majority of his articles have since been removed.[29] On four occasions, his posts were featured on the blog Naked Capitalism.[30] He also contributed to Zero Hedge, a far-right, sensationalist financial and geopolitics website.[31] During this period, Lira contacted Australian economist Steve Keen, proposing a collaborative project and suggesting that they start a paid subscription website. According to Keen, Gonzalo "overstated and over-promised what he could do".[7]
From 2017 onward, Lira was active on YouTube under the pseudonym Coach Red Pill (CRP). This name is an allusion to Red Pill and Black Pill symbolism in the manosphere community. The content was misogynistic[8] and anti-feminist in nature, appealing to incels.[27][32] Lira posted videos with advice such as "never date a woman in her thirties" and argued that all women only want money, a house, and kids, as child-rearing is the one thing that will biologically validate them.[7] In one video, he advised viewers living in Western democracies to move to "a poor, underdeveloped country" due to the former's "totalitarian" deployment of COVID-19 vaccines.[31] He published over 500 videos, gaining 324,000 subscribers and around 2 million views.[33] In November 2021, Lira deleted most of his CRP content and began posting under his legal name.[27]
Following the Russian military invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, Lira shifted the majority of his commentary to the conflict. Lira's content was heavily pro-Russian, praising Russian military actions and denying Russian missile attacks, as well as doxxing Western journalists.[34][35][36][37] His content, which has been classified as propaganda,[8] was praised by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.[38][39]
Lira lived in Kharkiv, and married a Ukrainian woman with whom he had two children, though the pair later separated.[7][40][41]
Arrest and prosecution
On April 15, 2022, Lira was noted to have lost contact with relatives, after which Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs began searching for his whereabouts.[9][42][43] Lira resurfaced on April 22, 2022, alleging that he had been detained by the SBU for the period he was missing.[10][44][38]
In May 2023, Lira was arrested for violation of Article 463-2 of Ukraine's criminal code, prohibiting the justification and denial of Russian armed aggression against Ukraine.[45] As specific instances of Lira breaking the law, the Ukrainian Centre for Strategic Communication and Information Security mentioned Lira's denial of the Bucha Massacre, his assertion that the Ukrainian government was a Neo-Nazi regime, and that Lira had filmed himself insulting Ukrainian soldiers then uploaded the footage to social media.[11][13] His arrest was reported by the SBU on May 5.[46][47] Lira was subsequently released on bail and placed under house arrest.[13][39] He returned to social media to claim to have been tortured while imprisoned, an allegation denied by the SBU.[13][39] Lira attempted to flee the country by crossing the Hungarian border on July 31 to claim political asylum, but was captured and arrested again for violating his bail conditions.[34][48][13]
In December 2023, Elon Musk, CEO of X (formerly Twitter), publicly inquired about Lira's status via his platform, in response to a post by media personality Tucker Carlson calling Lira a political prisoner.[49][50][51] The SBU responded that Lira had been detained in accordance with the law.[45] In a Business Insider interview that month, Ukrainian military spokeswoman Sarah Ashton-Cirillo asserted that Lira had fabricated his torture accusations.[50]
Death
On January 12, 2024, Gonzalo Lira Sr., Lira's father, reported that his son had died in a Ukrainian prison at the age of 55.[13] This was subsequently confirmed by the United States Department of State[13][14][52] and Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.[53] Lira Sr. blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Joe Biden for causing his son's death.[54][55] Cathy Young of The Bulwark criticized anti-Ukraine commentators for spreading misinformation about Lira and exploiting his death, while also issuing a call for transparency.[56]

to the conflict—where I state outright that this invasion wasn't out of

IF—and that’s a big “if”—this truly happened,
then this would have been the perfect “Pearl Harbor” moment for the
US/NATO to escalate into an open war with Russia.

Re. the Kiev regime’s spring offensive:
Supposedly, 200,000 men have been assembled, 60,000 of them combat
troops, to launch a major offensive that will cut Russia’s land bridge
to Crimea.

Kiev and its Western sponsors have been
announcing this offensive for going on months now. It is supposed to
break the back of the Russians.
For their part, the Russians have heavily fortified the portions of the contact line where this offensive might likely come.

This spring offensive was supposed to happen
in mid April — that is, now — but it has been postponed supposedly
because of weather and ground conditions.
At this time, there is no firm date for it, though it’s supposed to happen before July.
