You don't like governments
telling you what to eat? You also don't like them telling you what to
drive, like those big trucks, what to smoke, drink, what drugs to
indulge into, what to build on your property regardless of what your
neighbours may have to say, what gas I can release into the atmosphere
or at a restaurant (witty David will get this one) while we're at it.
When I really think about it; why do we even need a governemnt?

I was hoping for this to
happen. My son was fussy when he was younger and buying chocolate milk
at school was helpful to us. Real juice should not be 'banned'. Kids
should not have to live like they are in an old medieval prison, and
live on water and bread(of course the govt would not let them have
bread, maybe couscous???)

me what my kids can or can't have, it's my job to teach them about
nutrition and making healthy choices. And, there is nothing wrong with a
treat once in awhile.
David Amos
@Michael G. L. Geraldson I agree
Marguerite Deschamps
@Michael G. L. Geraldson, for
some; "it's a treat all of the time" is what they're taught. Therefore,
they learn nothing good at home and will learn nothing good in school.
Jake Quinlan
When do individuals, in
their lifetimes begin learning about nutrition and healthy choices so
that they can pass their wisdom onto their offspring? Is it possible
some parents have never learned about nutrition or healthy choices?

Banning these drinks in
schools was a knee jerk "let's make it look as if we are doing something
about obesity" reaction by the previous Liberal government. That same
government refused to add glucose test strips to the NB Drug Plan to
help diabetics self-manage their chronic disease, preferring instead to
pay millions for emergency care.
I doubt very much that the Higgs government will take this proactive step either, even though diabetes is responsible for killing people and clogging up the healthcare system. Like all those who came before, this latest batch of Conservatives will remain focused on the next election rather than the long-term needs of New Brunswickers.
To put this in perspective, by its own admission, 1 in 3 people in New Brunswick have diabetes...whether they know it or not. That number continues to climb.

Do you have some evidence that the Department of Education and the Provincial government have now cleared the way for sales of those substances in the schools? Was there ever a ban on drinking chocolate milk in schools? Were students being searched to ensure that they were not bringing chocolate milk in from home?

Step 1- reverse some parts of that silly decision.
Step 2- make phys ed mandatory to take.
Step 3- teach kids about nutrition, if there parents are slobs (kids learn from multiple methods)
Step 4- encourage fitness awards to recognize young leaders.
Step 5- sit back and see the educational improvement of fit students. Fitness is good for the brain. A healthy brain encourages healthy behaviour.

Chocolate milk or no
chocolate milk, kids are just not as active as they once were. Instead
of riding a bike or playing tag or hide and go seek, it's Call of Duty,
texting and I-Pads. Of there's exceptions but it seems it's easier for
parents to buy their kid the latest game instead of booting them out the
door and making them play outside like parents did back in the day.
Grow a spine and parent your children and then perhaps Chocolate milk
won't be as much of a hot button issue as it is now.

It is good to see a govt.
using some common sense . It was very strange that you had Brian Gallant
forbidding kids from buying a little carton of chocolate milk at school
; yet Gallant had Pot stores being built around the Province after
Justin Trudeau legalized it . It looks like the Liberals would prefer
that people get stoned rather than have a little drink of chocolate

PC government reverses ban on chocolate milk, juice sales in schools
The new Progressive Conservative government relaxed some requirements of policy 711
Students in New Brunswick schools will
once again be able to sell chocolate milk and fruit juice after the
provincial government made changes to its nutrition policy Wednesday.
The previous Liberal government updated the decades-old Policy 711 in June with stricter guidelines that prohibited food and beverages with "lower nutritional value that contain few nutrients and are higher in saturated fats, sugar or salt."
The requirements extended beyond the school cafeteria and applied to breakfast programs and fundraisers.
The policy was met with backlash from school officials and after-school programs.
On
Wednesday, the Progressive Conservative government unveiled the
rewritten policy that reverses the ban on chocolate milk and 100-per
cent fruit juice sales in schools.
Schools can choose to continue the ban, according to Dr. Jennifer Russell, the province's chief medical officer of health.
The policy will also allow for flexibility for breakfast and after-school programs as well as fundraisers.
"I don't want to see kids, who because of their income level, going to school hungry," said Dominic Cardy, minister of education and early childhood development.
"I don't want to see schools that depend on extracurricular supports lose that funding."
Cardy
said explaining the changes to students who've only been under the
policy for three months will mean admitting there was a mistake.
"Sometimes, just like kids make mistakes, so do grown-ups," he said. "I think this case this an example of a policy where we pushed it a little too far and didn't think about the consequences and now we're just tweaking a bit."
Russell praised the ban back in June, saying that most Canadians get most of their sugar intake from sugary drinks.
She said Wednesday the evidence hasn't changed.
Russell has said in order to reduce sugar consumption in Canadians, sugary drinks would have to be a target. She said she treated many patients as a family doctor for diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
She said that she provides the research for making decisions, but the ultimate decision is up to the government.
"The government has the right to make changes to policies and my job is promote and protect the health of the public," she said.
The change is welcome news to the dairy farmers who supply milk to the local schools in the province.
Paul Gaunce, chair of the Dairy Farmers of New Brunswick, said sales have taken a hit in the three months the policy banned chocolate milk.
He said in the first three months sales dropped by 40 per cent. Gaunce said there was no increase in consumption of white milk and that created more problems for the industry.
He was glad to see the changes reversed, something that was promised to him during the election campaign.
"I'm very happy," he said.
The decision also pleases the principal of Barker's Point Elementary School in Fredericton.
Jennifer Ward said she is glad the school will once again be able to have fundraisers that can sell sugary treats.
"Events like the Halloween Howl bring in fundraising monies for us," she said. "So, now we have the flexibility that we can continue those."
MLA Chuck Chiasson, Liberal policy advocate for education, said he thinks the reversal of the changes is a mistake.
He said if the government is going to make reverse some of the polices rules it needs to provide the proper education about nutrition.
"I think they're making a mistake," he said.
