Fundy Royal flips for just second time in a century
Alaina Lockhart defeats Rob Moore to take Conservative stronghold of Fundy Royal
CBC News Posted: Oct 20, 2015 6:40 AM ATAlaina Lockhart locks hands with her husband Rick before he hoisted it into the air. (Redmond Shannon/CBC)
Liberal Alaina Lockhart beat Conservative Rob Moore on Monday in the riding of Fundy Royal and seized what has been a Conservative stronghold riding since 1917.
The only other Liberal win there was with Paul Zed in 1993 when Kim Campbell's Progressive Conservatives were reduced to only two seats across Canada.
In a wrap-around riding that touches the outskirts of the more urban-based ridings of Fredericton, Moncton-Riverview-Dieppe and Saint John Rothesay, the rural New Brunswick voters of Fundy Royal have reliably cast their ballots for the Tories time after time.
Defeated incumbent Rob Moore, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency minister in Stephen Harper's government, stopped by Lockhart's campaign party to wish her well.
Defeated Conservative incumbent Rob Moore wishes Alaina Lockhart well in her new role as MP. (Redmond Shannon/CBC)
"Certainly [we see] strong Liberal results in Atlantic Canada and that's why I was here tonight, to congratulate Alaina on her new role as a member of Parliament," said Moore.Lockhart, standing in a loud, crowded Smitty's Restaurant on Main Street in Sussex, could not stop smiling while speaking with CBC News.
"There's lots of work to be done here and we have lots of potential here and I'm excited to represent the area in Ottawa," said Lockhart.
Lockhart has sold wedding gowns in the town of Sussex since 2004 in her shop — also on Main Street — Lockhart's Wedding & Special Occasions.
Lockhart said taking the riding was something she and her team believed in — with caution.
"I think everybody was very realistic about what the history of this riding was and it took a tremendous amount of hard work and hope," she said.
"There were a lot of people behind me that really did feel that we had an opportunity here and believed and worked really hard over the last several months."
Those believers included Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau, who made a stop in the riding Oct. 7, showing the party thought there was a real chance voters were looking for a change.
In an interview with CBC News during the campaign, Lockhart said she was appealing to the middle class.
"That's the majority of Fundy Royal," said Lockhart. "People working everyday to make ends meet."
"The fact that we have a national campaign focused on strengthening the middle class to put more money in their pockets to then stimulate the economy, I'm encouraged by that," she said.
Standing in Smitty's but poised to take her seat in Ottawa, Lockhart reiterated her enthusiasm.
"I'm tremendously excited. This is an opportunity for our area for Atlantic Canada and for Fundy Royal," she said.

Bookman
Dear 'churchies': please remove the blue signs from your lawns. We don't want to be reminded of the bigotry and ignorance of our fellow citizens any longer.
Sanford&Son
@Bookman You probably have no idea how ironic that statement is.
dominofalling
@Sanford&Son I grew up in the riding I know exactly what @Bookman is talking about. The ignorance and bigotry runs deep. There are tons of 'folks' who are nice to your face, but hate on gays and people of color in their talk. Almost all of them are heavy church goers..so where is this irony you are talking about?
CBC, Goebbels - No Difference
@dominofalling The irony is that Bookman is intolerant of intolerance.

CBC, Goebbels - No Difference
@Mollydog Where did I say I have anything but utter contempt for Harper? Real "small c" conservatives who don't see the value in lies, deceit and the treasonous selling out of our economy to the corporate/banking sector want nothing to do with him. Stephen Harper is a neocon - please don't confuse him or his maniacal, ideological supporters with real conservatism.
w8n4it
For Fundy Royal to turn on the conservatives is extremely telling. Rob Moore didn't do anything wrong, though. He just didn't do anything at all. He never had to. Kind of like the Toronto Maple Leafs. Unproductive and blah!
Ostie d'tabarnac

Congratulations Alaina, and best wishes as you work into your new role as our member of parliament.

Rob Moore contributed little to Fundy Royal. Fundy Royal has had a plethora of photo ops, hand shaking and cake cutting but little else.
The people of Fundy Royal have spoken against the bigoted establishment in Ottawa in a big way. They went to the poles to tip the scales in a more realistic display of the numbers.
Weather this is the right government or not is not the issue here. The issue is that the Harper government embarrassed the people of Fundy Royal and they responded. Congrats Fundy Royal. Never thought I would see this day.

Alaine: Liberals are in because we wanted trudeau in, your just part of the package. dont stay up on your high horse too long, you ve got alot of impressing to do, in very little time to do it.
ohyeahwhosays
Of all the ridings in NB this is undoubtedly THE single most conservative! It will be extraordinarily difficult to hold on the seat in 2019. The very "rural-ness" of the riding makes it difficult for progressives to stand a chance of election. It will only happen when the electorate have had enough of CONservative corruption that they notice and realize the corruption goes against even their conservative grain; then they toss the CONservative bum out. In 4 or 5 years time though, there won't be that corruption (hopefully!) to get them riled up so they'll be back voting "blue"

Fundy Royal campaign targets middle class with focus on jobs
Fundy Royal voters have elected Conservatives all but 1 time in 28 elections over 101 years
CBC News · Posted: Oct 17, 2015 6:00 AM AT
Four candidats are running in the federal riding of Fundy-Royal. Green
candidate Stephanie Coburn, NDP candidate Jennifer McKenzie, Liberal
candidate Alaina Lockhart and Conservative candidate Rob Moore. (Courtesy of Stephanie Coburn, Jennifer McKenzie/Facebook, Alaina Lockhart/Facebook, CBC)
Candidates running in Fundy Royal are appealing to the middle
class in the typically Tory-dominant riding, with a focus on jobs and
the economy.
The Conservatives have strong roots in the southern New Brunswick riding — this area has given its support to the Conservatives in every election for the past century, save for 1993, when Liberal Paul Zed won office.
In 2011, Conservative incumbent Rob Moore captured nearly 60 per cent of the vote.
Moore said he hopes the party's record, with its focus on the economy and direct benefits to people, will earn him another term in office.
But, he said, he has also delivered on bringing federal cash to his ridinng.
Moore says the biggest question he's heard at the door is how the next government will move the regions's economy forward.
He says the answer lies in TransCanada Corp.'s proposed Energy East pipeline.
"The [Irving Oil] refinery is employing many people in our region, there's a lot of spinoff benefits, and if we can bring that resource from Alberta to New Brunswick to be refined and sold from our port, that is a great economic opportunity," said Moore.
Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau campaigned in Sussex earlier in the campaign. The Liberals are hoping to knock off the Tories for only the second time in a century. (Courtesy Alaina Lockhart/Facebook)
"That's the majority of Fundy Royal," said Lockhart, who has owned Lockhart's Weddings and Special Occasions Inc. since 2004.
"People working everyday to make ends meet and the fact that we have a national campaign focused on strengthening the middle class to put more money in their pockets to then stimulate the economy, I'm encouraged by that," she said.
Lockhart says her party's focus on seniors through initiatives like affordable housing, strengthening the Canada Pension Plan and guaranteed income supplement would benefit the region.
"They worked hard their whole lives and we need to make sure they have secure retirements," she said.
McKenzie, an electrical engineer living in St. Martins, threw her name in after becoming "discouraged and disillusioned by the current government.
"People want our youth back, we want to have reasons to stay here.
" be part of the economy and have jobs," she asid.
"The current government's focus on the prairie provinces in the oil and gas industry left New Brunswick and the Atlantic provinces neglected, and we actually had a three year recession here."
McKenzie says the NDP's focus on small business would better serve the area's economy.
"Our agricultural industry should be flourishing, we have to make sure we protect the family farm, there's fishing, forestry, I'm proud of our tourism initiatives, so much is a good fit to the NDP," she said.
Stephanie Coburn, the
Green Party candidate for Fundy Royal, says the promise of 14,000 direct
and indirect full-time jobs across Canada is "hugely exaggerated."
"The pipeline is a bad idea for people locally and we heard about the pipeline spills in northern Alberta and Michigan, and that ... oil they hope to bring in through the pipeline is impossible to cleanup," Coburn said.
"It's a bad idea nationally because it's all going to be exported … And it's going to contribute so much to the greenhouse gases we're trying to avoid to the globe, and exacerbate global warming terribly."
Coburn says she has heard encouragement for her party at the door, a big turnaround from when she first stepped into the political arena in 2010.
"Now I feel I'm finally not talking into the wind as I have been a long time about environmental issues," said Coburn.
"People are aware of the environmental problems we experience, and we're going to experience if we don't make some changes. That's a positive change from when I first ran."
Fundy Royal contains parts of the counties of Albert, Kings, Queens, Saint John and Westmorland and includes St. Martins, Salisbury, Sussex and Petitcodiac, as well as part of Quispamsis.

It appears that the CROWN Corp known as CBC has failed its MANDATE once again and acted in a very partisan fashion in ignoring my name on the ballot. Correct? The real question is will the CROWN even allow this comment to be posted?

In return here is an old scoop about CTV that CBC and everybody else and his dog has been ignoring for 11 very long years after I ran in the election of the 38th Parliament against the aptly named lawyer Rob Moore.

Anybody bother to notice I am the only person posting here with a real name and it is the same name that is on the ballot in Fundy Royal?
Do ya think the lawyer Rob Moore "The True Conservative" or any of the others would dare to debate me in writing with their true name within a website funded by the taxpayer and controlled by questionable public servants? How about outside the CROWN"s domain within the Yankee website called Twitter? That is where I play very serious Political Hard Ball. See for yourself or ask Rob Moore's hero Stevey Boy Harper if I am a liar or not.

BTW Rob Moore and I know the truth about Randy Quaid's questionable arrests in Canada and the USA. More importantly so does Randy I know that for a fact.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/randy-quaid-release-jail-vermont-1.3274216
"I never worried about being found guilty or any of that for any of these charges because I know the truth, and I know the facts are going to come out at some point, and today was a good sign of that," Randy Quaid said
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/randy-quaid-court-appearance-1.3262238
"Quaid and his wife Evi, a Canadian citizen, have been living in Montreal since February 2013."
"Robert Gervais, an official with the Immigration and Refugee Board, confirmed in an email to CBC News that a detention review hearing for Quaid is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
But the reason for the actor's arrest is unclear.
Quaid, 64, was detained Tuesday morning after attending a regular check-in with CBSA officials in downtown Montreal.
Quaid's lawyer, Mark Gruszczynski, declined to shed light on the affair or to reveal the reason for Quaid's arrest."

“To guarantee every Canadian the same access to the same quality health care — regardless of who they are or where they live — the federal government must assume a leadership role,” said CNA president Barb Mildon. “Health providers and the premiers have made progress in identifying local innovations that can be scaled up into national solutions, but real progress depends on actually implementing these solutions consistently across our country. We’re eager to work with the new health minister, Rona Ambrose, to present priority outcomes — such as a reduction in diabetes, availability of electronic health records, 24/7 access to primary care — that require focused collaboration to achieve better system performance and better health.”
The health accord, established in 2004 between the federal and provincial/territorial governments, is set to expire in 2014 and a replacement has not been established. When the Health Council of Canada reported in 2011 that only about half of the targets in the accord were being met, a spokesperson for then-health minister Leona Aglukkaq confirmed there would be a renewal at some point and that the federal government “will work collaboratively with the provinces and territories to renew the health accord.” An unexpected development came later in 2011 when finance minister Jim Flaherty announced health transfers will continue to increase at six per cent a year until 2016-2017, after which they would be based on growth in Canada’s GDP and inflation.
“Demonstrating a commitment to Canadians cannot be done through signing a cheque alone,” said CFNU president Linda Silas. “The federal government signed up for a collaborative relationship with the provinces and territories in 2004. Almost ten years later, there are still major gaps in the health-care system that must be addressed in order to guarantee quality, safe care for all Canadians. We urge the federal government to re-commit to an investment of effort and resources to help us build a better universal, public health system that will lead to better health outcomes for all Canadians.”
To sustain and improve Canada’s publicly funded, not-for-profit health-care system, CNA and CFNU recommend three priorities where the federal government can contribute to health-care transformation:
CFNU represents close to 200,000 nurses and student nurses. Our members work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, community health care, and our homes. The CFNU speaks to all levels of government, other health care stakeholders and the public about evidence-based policy options to improve patient care, working conditions and our public health care system.

Ottawa, Ontario: Today, over 185 organizations from across Canada released a joint statement calling on the federal government to immediately implement universal, public pharmacare as part of its response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The statement is supported by a diverse coalition representing health care providers, non-profit organizations, unions, workers, seniors, patients, and the business community from coast to coast to coast.
“The need for universal, public pharmacare has never been more urgent,” said Melanie Benard, the National Director of Policy and Advocacy at the Canadian Health Coalition. “Millions of Canadians have lost their jobs and their work-based drug plans during this pandemic. That means millions more people are now struggling to afford their medication. The government must take action now.”
Before the Covid-19 crisis, nearly one in four households were struggling to afford their medications. One million Canadians were having to choose between putting food on the table and buying the medication they needed. These numbers have increased exponentially due to the mass layoffs triggered by the pandemic.
“So many Canadians are now struggling to make ends meet,” said Benard. “If they skip their medication because they can’t afford it, they may end up getting sicker and needing to go to the hospital. Our health care system can’t afford that additional strain during the pandemic. We need to keep people as healthy as possible, and to do that we need universal, public pharmacare.”
In a new poll conducted by Abacus Data for the Broadbent Institute, 72% of Canadians said that universal, public pharmacare is a very important part of the government’s response to the COVID crisis.
Canada is the only country in the world with a universal health care system that doesn’t cover prescription medication. Last summer, the Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare led by Dr. Eric Hoskins recommended that Canada adopt a universal, public pharmcare program.
Given the current crisis, the new joint statement is calling on the government to speed up the implementation of the Council’s recommendations. Benard explained: “We can’t afford to wait any longer for pharmacare. Canadians need this program now to help them get through the COVID crisis. We’re counting on the government to make it happen.”

Liberals focus on seniors, middle class

The Liberals are trying hard to knock off the Tories. Liberal
Leader Justin Trudeau has already appeared in Sussex, the largest
community in the riding.
Liberal candidate Alaina Lockhart said she is trying to appeal her campaign to the middle class."That's the majority of Fundy Royal," said Lockhart, who has owned Lockhart's Weddings and Special Occasions Inc.
Hopeful for change
NDP candidate Jennifer McKenzie says she's sensing an eagerness for change in the large riding.McKenzie, an electrical engineer living in St. Martins, threw her name in after becoming "discouraged and disillusioned by the current government.
"People want our youth back, we want to have reasons to stay here.
- NDP candidate Jennifer McKenzieThe region has lost a lot of its youth because of the Harper government's lack of focus on the economy, she said.
Lost youth
The proposed Energy East pipeline could add new jobs to the
communities inside Fundy Royal, according to Conservative MP Rob Moore. (Dan Riedlhuber/Reuters)
The proposed Energy East pipeline is popular in many parts of
the southern New Brunswick riding, but the Green candidate said it is
the wrong way to attract investment.

According to co-founder Dana Wagner, who also works as a researcher at Ryerson University in Toronto, the team behind the site wants to help voters "separate out the truth from spin, distortion, omission, error and lies."
"Our goal is to enable Canadians to critically engage in political-speak, and to encourage politicians to be honest and accurate with their words," she told CBC News via email.
Unlike many countries, she noted, Canada does not have a major fact-checking outlet — and FactsCan is hoping to change that before the next election.

President: Linda Silas, RN, BScN
A 5-foot feminist dynamo with a soft heart and strong stomach who is passionate about making a difference in people’s lives.Starting her tenure as a full-time labour activist as the single mom of a 13-month-old son has shaped Linda in a very distinctive way. Linda has earned a reputation for being a caring listener who is focused and solution-oriented in everything she does. A proud New Brunswicker, Linda credits her home province for both her impressive work ethic and her well-known zest for life and adventure.

Linda’s favourite public speaking engagements are always for students, as she believes that mentoring the next generation of activists is an important responsibility we all share.
Linda champions greater understanding and action on social justice, the social determinants of health and key policies that will enhance socio-economic equity, such as retirement security for all workers, a national pharmacare program, universal child care and greater access to public services for Indigenous communities.
Linda was previously the President of the New Brunswick Nurses Union (NBNU) for 10 years. Linda is a graduate of l’Université de Moncton, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and has practiced in the ICU, emergency, and labour and delivery.

Canada’s nurses are saving a seat for the federal government
Niagara-on-the-Lake, July 26, 2013 — As the premiers wrap up their summer Council of the Federation meeting in Niagara, the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) and the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) are reminding the federal government that they still have an important role to play in uniting Canada’s health-care system across the regions to ultimately improve the health of Canadians. The premiers were previously together in Niagara in 2004 alongside the federal government to sign the health accord, where both levels agreed on “collaboration between all governments, working together in common purpose to meet the evolving health-care needs of Canadians.” CNA and CFNU note the progress that premiers have made on health-care transformation, but are calling on the federal government to bring consistency and unity across the provinces and territories.“To guarantee every Canadian the same access to the same quality health care — regardless of who they are or where they live — the federal government must assume a leadership role,” said CNA president Barb Mildon.
- strengthen accountability by establishing health and system improvement goals based on a series of priority quality indicators with targets across the health-care system
- ensure the capacity to meet the needs of Canadians by stabilizing and securing Canada’s health workforce today and for the long term
- improve health equity and reduce health disparity by investing in services and programs such as greater access to community-based health services (e.g., primary care, outpatient care and home care) and a universal pharmacare program

Canada needs universal, public pharmacare now more than ever

Coalition of health organizations urges ban on medical tourism
2014-10-27
Representatives from the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario, Canadian Doctors for Medicare, the Association of Ontario Midwives, and the Association of Ontario Health Centres say the government needs to demonstrate leadership to prevent medical tourism from delaying Ontarians' access to health care.
Medical tourism refers to a practice where hospitals create for-profit programs to attract patients from across international borders to receive health care on a pay-for-treatment basis.
The health groups say that hospitals should not be allowed to create two-tier, for-profit programs, and want the government to ban the practice.

Milton Chan
Vice-President Policy
milton@justicequest.com
Contrary to popular beliefs, I am NOT the quintessential policy wonk.
I wasn’t quite old enough when I first got involved in the '93
election in Vancouver, and being active in the party has been a fairly
major part of my life since. I managed campaigns, worked for
ministers, was president of campus clubs, and played many other odd
and end roles. I also found the http://www.electionprediction. org,
which I trust some of you find highly addictive.
I am quite involved with progressive causes, and many considered me a
“poster-child hell-raiser†both inside and outside the party. I
was referred to as “left-wing Young Liberals ring leader†by
newspapers, and CBC once made
http://www.cbc.ca/national/ news/challengechurch/†>a, small
documentary about my involvement with Challenge the Church when the
Pope was in Toronto.
CBC National once noted, "Milton Chan's stomping ground is Toronto's
gay village", and that was more than just assessment on my partying
routine. I take a particular interest in topics related to sexuality,
gender, and systemic oppression, and I have been volunteering for
queer organizations since I came out at the age of 17.
Outside of politics, I take part in various social justice
initiatives, volunteer at my local Community Centre, and do shifts at
not-for-profit legal clinics. I performed for various chorus and
amateur musical companies, and if you think choreography comes
naturally to all gays, note “amateur†.
I live in downtown Toronto, but I’ve never been up the CN Tower. I
study law at Osgoode Hall, but spend more time art gallery than the
law library. My mom thinks I go out too much as she never gets me
when she calls at 11pm. I've already suggested email.

Canadian Criminal Code: Defense of Person Self-Defence Against
Unprovoked Assault ... /
Extent of justification.
34. (1) Every one who is unlawfully assaulted without having provoked
the assault is justified in repelling force by force if the force he
uses is not intended to cause death or grievous bodily harm and is no
more than is necessary to enable him to defend himself.
(2) Every one who is unlawfully assaulted and who causes death or
grievous bodily harm in repelling the assault is justified if
(a) he causes it under reasonable apprehension of death or grievous
bodily harm from the violence with which the assault was originally
made or with which the assailant pursues his purposes; and
(b) he believes, on reasonable grounds, that he cannot otherwise
preserve himself from death or grievous bodily harm.
[R.S. c.C-34, s.34.] Self-Defence In Case Of Aggression.
35. Every one who has without justification assaulted another but did
not commence the assault with intent to cause death or grievous bodily
harm, or has without justification provoked an assault on himself by
another, may justify the use of force subsequent to the assault if
(a) he uses the force
(i) under reasonable apprehension of death or grievous bodily harm
from the violence of the person whom he has assaulted or provoked, and
(ii) in the belief, on reasonable grounds, that it is necessary in
order to preserve himself from death or grievous bodily harm;
(b) he did not, at any time before the necessity of preserving himself
from death or grievous bodily harm arose, endeavour to cause death or
grievous bodily harm; and
(c) he declined further conflict and quitted or retreated from it as
far as it was feasible to do so before the necessity of preserving
himself from death or grievous bodily harm arose.
