LIVE UPDATES: Ezra Levant appeals 'Libranos' book conviction in Federal Court

Ezra Levant is at the Federal Court of Canada this morning, facing a trial for penning The Libranos, a 2019 bestseller that examined the corruption that swirls around Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal cabinet.

During the run-up to 2019's federal election, 24 books were published about Trudeau — but only one, The Libranos, was critical of the prime minister. It surely must have infuriated Trudeau, as Elections Canada assigned more than a dozen staff to investigate the book's author, Ezra Levant.

Four years later, and already faced with thousands in fines and $100,000 in legal fees, the fight is now in the Federal Court.

Follow along for updates as Ezra Levant and Rebel News fight back to stop this dangerous precedent from being set:

I'm trying to imagine what it would be like if Stephen Harper had weaponized Elections Canada against left-wing authors when he was PM. It's unthinkable that Harper would have done it, but if he had, the reaction from civil society would have been loud, sustained and unanimous.

Is free speech dead? My depressing day in court

Dear David,

I was jubilant this morning: after more than four years, I would finally be able to challenge Justin Trudeau’s censorship of my best-selling book about him, called The Libranos: What the Media Won’t Tell You About Justin Trudeau’s Corruption.

(Just by the title, you can see why he hates it!)

But as I sat alone in the massive courtroom (not a single journalist was there, nor a single civil liberties activist) I slowly felt deflated.

Not because it’s a David vs. Goliath battle — I’m used to that. (There were seven lawyers and bureaucrats on the government's side; we had just one lawyer on our side.)

But because Trudeau’s lawyers were so cavalier about being censors. They were just so brazen.

And — what really scared me — the judge didn’t really seem to care.

Here — I did my “Ezra Levant Show” on the topic today. Normally it’s behind a paywall, but I’d like you to see it today. Click here:

(FREE SHOW) Is free speech dead? My depressing day in court

The judge suggested that she really didn’t think it was a big deal for authors to be summoned by police to explain what their “plans” were for publishing political books. It wasn’t too much of an imposition, she implied.

Seriously. That’s the kind of thing that, if it happened in China or Iran, would be something we’d denounce at the United Nations!

And Trudeau’s lawyers were even worse, saying (and I’m not making this up) that “unregulated media" are a threat to elections”.

No; it’s the opposite actually. Censorship of the media is a threat to elections.

But not to the Justice Department, when it’s Justin Trudeau and his cronies running it.

I started the day excited and I ended dejected. But that’s just my feeling about things — we’ll see what the judge says when she issues her ruling in a few weeks.

But I know this: I’ll never stop fighting for free speech and other fundamental freedoms. Unfortunately, too many other people who should be fighting for freedom aren’t, so a lot of the load has fallen on us. This week alone:

  • we’ve crowdfunded Artur Pawlowki’s hearing in Lethbridge

  • fought against illegal police raids in Calgary

  • crowdfunded Tamara Lich’s trial in Ottawa

  • crowdfunded Pastor Derek Reimer’s case in Calgary (for peacefully protesting a drag queen story hour)

  • and then there’s our “Libranos” hearing today.

It’s almost like we’re a civil liberties law firm that publishes the odd news story on the side!

But we have to do it. If not us, then who? And if not now, then when?

If you can help us, please do. Please click here, to help cover our legal fees.

I promise you I’ll keep fighting as long as you’re with me.

Your friend,

Ezra Levant

P.S. I’m a bit demoralized by today’s hearing. But I won’t lose hope. We’ll have some exciting news to share with you next week that should raise your spirits.

P.P.S. You win some and you lose some. But as Wayne Gretzky said, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. At Rebel News, we take the shot for freedom.

P.P.P.S. Thanks for standing with me — and with freedom.

P.P.P.P.S. Trudeau’s lawyers were paid for by taxpayers. We have to crowdfund ours. If you can help, please do, by clicking here or going to www.TheLibranos.com. (Thanks.)

Yo Ezzy Baby do you know when we may expect Trudeau "The Younger" to
land in the Place to Be" again in order to hold the  equally mindless
lawyer Brian Gallant's hand and insure a Librano Landslide?

Can you or anyone (The CROWN in particular) tell that I expected Γ‰ric
Grenier to block me or know why I saved the proof of what was said and
done?  Trust that you buddies Prentice and Harper know. After all the
CBC is a CROWN Corp with a  non Partisan mandate N'ey pas Stevey Boy
Harper?

FOR THE PUBLIC RECORD I largely agree with both Eric Grenier David
Akin but everybody and his dog knows as well as I that the spindoctrs
for CBC and Sun Media will NEVER tell the WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT ANYTHING.
I believe that I proved that in spades when I ran for public office
four times. E verybody knows that after quite a struggle with the
Elections dudes their pals in the CBC refused to even admit that my
name was on the ballots until the elections were over. CORRECT Mr
Weston and Mr Akin?

That said I agree that pollsters are often wrong but it does appear
that the Libranos will sweep the flloors of Harper and his neocon
cohorts. I truly believe the only hope for our purportedly profound
democracy is minority governemnts with lots of Independents having
seats as well. Everybody who does not bother to vote agrees that it
makes no difference if the Libranos or the Conseratives run the
governemnt. It is always the same same old same old. Obviously I am
going about trying to effect a true change by torturing the Hell out
of the VERY Unethical Fake Left under the lawyer Mulcair and the Green
Meanies under the lawyer Dizzy Lizzy May or even the mindless bastards
following the biblepounding boss of PANB into finally start spilling
the beans for the benefit of all.
