MADRID — Russia abruptly withdrew its application on Wednesday to dock three warships for refueling at a Spanish port, shortly after Spain’s partners in NATO
urged Spain to turn away the vessels. The ships are heading to the
eastern Mediterranean Sea to support Russian military operations in Syria.
Russia’s intention to dock the three warships, which were said to include its only aircraft carrier,
the Soviet-era Admiral Kuznetsov, at Ceuta, a Spanish enclave on the
north coast of Africa, was first reported in the Spanish news media on
Tuesday evening.
The
development set off alarm bells among the alliance defense ministers,
who gathered in Brussels on Wednesday for a two-day meeting and warned
Spain not to let the Russian ships dock.
“We’d
be extremely concerned that any NATO member should consider assisting a
Russian carrier group that might end up bombing Syrian civilians,”
Britain’s defense secretary, Michael Fallon, told reporters. “On the
contrary, NATO should be standing together.”
The
Atlantic alliance’s secretary general, Jens Stoltenberg, told reporters
that while Russia had the right to operate in international waters, the
situation at Ceuta was different because of concerns that the aircraft
carrier group would mount strikes on the Syrian city of Aleppo.
“It
is up to each nation to decide, as has been NATO policy for many years,
but we are concerned about the potential use of this carrier group to
increase attacks against civilians in Aleppo,” Mr. Stoltenberg said
Wednesday morning. “All allies are aware of our concerns.”
Less
than three hours later, the Spanish Foreign Ministry announced that
Russia had withdrawn its request to dock the ships at Ceuta. “The
government of Spain is following with extraordinary concern the bombing
of Aleppo and the humanitarian tragedy that is going on,” the ministry
said.
The
Spanish government had granted permission last month for three ships to
call at Ceuta between Oct. 28 and Nov. 2, as part of what Spain said
was the normal port-of-call practice for Russian ships, which had been
in effect “for years.”
The
Interfax news agency quoted Leonid Slutsky, head of the parliamentary
committee on foreign affairs, as saying, “Moscow’s decision to recall
the request for our military ships to enter the Spanish port of Ceuta is
the only correct, unyielding and worthy one.”
Later
on Wednesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement denying
that Russia had ever requested permission for the aircraft carrier to
refuel at Ceuta. The ministry’s statement said that Russia had
considered having three other warships call at the port, but that Spain
had balked because of pressure from the United States.
It
was not immediately clear where the Russian ships would go instead to
refuel. The non-NATO ports nearest to Ceuta are in Morocco and Algeria.
Russia
sent the aircraft carrier and a group of supporting warships steaming
toward the Mediterranean this month from bases on the Barents Sea, the
Kremlin’s latest effort to demonstrate its military might. The flotilla passed through the English Channel on Friday.
Ceuta
is one of two Spanish enclaves in North Africa. Russian naval vessels
have called there a number of times to refuel for operations in the
Mediterranean. The Yaroslav Mudry, a Russian frigate with a crew of
about 250, made its fourth such visit to Ceuta earlier this month,
according to local news reports.
Mr.
Stoltenberg said Wednesday that the alliance was concerned about
“assertive” exercises by Russia, including its movement of missiles with
the capacity to carry nuclear warheads and its recent decision to suspend cooperation on plutonium disposal under a treaty with the United States.
He
noted that Russia’s 2014 military intervention in Ukraine, including
the annexation of Crimea, had led to a simmering conflict in the eastern
part of that country, and he said that Russia’s support for Syria’s
embattled president, Bashar al-Assad, was “deeply troubling.” He called
the Syrian government forces’ attacks on homes and hospitals
“disgraceful.”
Mr. Stoltenberg is scheduled on Thursday to meet with Federica Mogherini, the European Union’s top diplomat.
To
bolster its eastern defenses, NATO has agreed to establish battalions
of 800 to 1,200 multinational troops in four member nations in Eastern
Europe — Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland — as well as a brigade of
four battalions to be based in Bulgaria and Romania. Asked on Wednesday
about those steps, Mr. Stoltenberg called them “defensive” and
“proportionate,” and he noted that Russia had increased its military
spending and used force in Georgia, Syria, Ukraine and elsewhere.
He
said the alliance must respond to Russia in a responsible and measured
way and should focus on “risk reduction” and “transparency” in its talks
with the Kremlin.

Had Newsweek done proper due diligence, they would have noticed that, as stated many times before, RT received 17 billion rubles, or approximately 275 million dollars in funding for the year 2016. Then they went ahead and misrepresented the circumstance of BBC World Service’s funding, implying that it was cut off. That’s a far cry from the reality of BBC’s financing: the BBC World Service (which focuses primarily on radio and digital platforms, rather than round-the-clock TV programming, like RT) continues to receive annual subsidy of £245 million, sourced from the mandatory license fee, as well as supplementary £289 million over five years from the country’s security and defense budget. Furthermore, these figures do not even include the budget for BBC World News – UK's global television service. As such, BBC’s financial disadvantage vis a vis RT when it comes to global news broadcasting is pure fiction. At least Newsweek elaborated on the situation, after being contacted by RT….Props!

Mr Trump is quite a Showman who can easily finance his GOP political games but why does the clever politician Bernie Sanders act so surprised by the crowds he brings as well?
Lots of people study him including mean old me. Why not listen to what he has to say instead of the same old same old from the GOP and Hillary? Hell I just wish he were ethical as well. Then I would support him. However the not so "independent" Bernie Sanders failed me in that regard a long and lonely time ago.

Bernie Sanders on Friday announced that he has named two long-time Vermont aides to key positions on his presidential campaign. Sanders chose Jeff Weaver to be his campaign manager and Phil Fiermonte to be the campaign field director.
They join the campaign’s senior ranks along with Tad Devine, a Sanders friend and adviser who played leading roles in six Democratic presidential campaigns. Weaver and Fiermonte were born and raised in Vermont and have been part of Bernie’s congressional and campaign teams for decades.
Weaver, raised in the St. Albans area, first met Bernie as a 20-year-old volunteer in Sanders’ 1986 campaign for governor. He later worked on Sanders’ campaigns for the U.S. House and on his 2006 campaign for the U.S. Senate. Weaver was a legislative assistant in Sanders’ congressional office and worked his way up to chief of staff in the Senate office. He is a graduate of Georgetown Law School, which he attended while working for Sanders.
Fiermonte has worked on a number of Sanders’ campaigns and was, until recently, the state director in the Vermont Senate office. A native of Derby, the University of Vermont alum and former Burlington City Council member also was executive director of the American Federation of Teachers in Vermont. He has worked for Sanders for 16 years.
Devine’s ties to Sanders date back to a 1996 House race and Sanders’ first campaign for the U.S. Senate in 2006.
“We are assembling a talented staff with years of experience in grassroots movements and building the coalitions that will be critical to our success. As an elected official in Vermont I have held hundreds of town meetings and have knocked on thousands of doors. That’s the kind of people-oriented campaign I enjoy and that’s the kind of campaign I will be running for president. And that’s what Jeff and Phil know how to do very well,” Sanders said.
“Tad Devine is a friend who brings a great deal of national experience to our campaign. I not only have great respect for his media expertise, but for the knowledge of contemporary American politics that he and his team will bring to our campaign,” Sanders added.

Pastor Kent Hovind says thank you to everyone around the world who have spent so much time, treasure, and effort helping him and Paul. Because of the grace of God, prayers, and Christian activists around the world Kent Hovind won the first trial at that courthouse in NINE YEARS! People there said they'd never seen anything like that before. The Lord stepped in and worked a miracle. The battle is not over yet though and until Kent and Paul walk out of that prison and go back home with their families we MUST continue to keep the pressure mounting on Judge Margaret Casey Rodgers and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. We are getting very close to victory though everyone. Please, just help us get across the finish line so we can all celebrate officially the victory.

A lot of them were in public service when the US and Canadian governments first attacked me and created a very fierce but ethical politcal animal.
