Has the internet been good for democracy? An Ira Basen documentary

Our navigator of the worldwide web, Ira Basen, looks at the promise and the perils of digital democracy. What happened to the dream that the internet would bring power to the people? Facebook and Twitter were touted as new vehicles for ordinary citizens to engage with politicians and each other. People imagined a new age of accountability, transparency and citizen empowerment. What has happened to the dream of digital "power to the people" ?

Ira Basen's documentary is called "Tools of the Game."

Every day we are inundated with messages. Messages from politicians and from business leaders explaining their ideas and solutions for the ongoing global financial crisis. But, in that sea of words, how do you know what to believe?  Shocking as it may sound, sometimes those politicians and leaders have their best interests at heart, and not our own.

In this episode, and for the next 5 on And the Winner Is... we'll try to help you navigate that sea of words, as we present "Spin Cycles: A Series About Spin, the Spinners and the Spun."
And after listening to the series, you'll never hear or read the news in the same way again.
The first episode starts at the very beginning. It's called the First Century of Spin.
