Conservatives decisively win B.C. federal byelection, dealing another blow to Trudeau

Cloverdale—Langley City byelection was won by Tamara Jansen, who held the seat from 2019 to 2021

The Conservatives comfortably won a federal byelection in the Cloverdale—Langley City riding, dealing yet another blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal Party.

Tamara Jansen, who held the seat from 2019 to 2021, won decisively over the Liberals' Madison Fleischer and the NDP's Vanessa Sharma, securing almost two-thirds of the vote.

The loss of the riding is another blow to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals, who are in turmoil after the Monday resignation of Chrystia Freeland from her role as finance minister and deputy prime minister.

Freeland stepped down just as she was to deliver a fall economic statement, prompting calls for Trudeau to resign.

The final results had Jansen securing 9,931 votes, compared to Fleischer's 2,401 votes, with 122 out of 122 polls reporting.

"It might not have been the result we were expecting or hoping," Fleischer told supporters who gathered at a restaurant just after 10 p.m. "But you know what? We have a general election to look ahead to."

The byelection in the previously Liberal seat of Cloverdale—Langley City comes roughly six months after former two-term Liberal MP John Aldag, who had represented the party in the seat from 2015 to 2019 and then from 2021, resigned to run for the B.C. NDP in the provincial election.

Aldag lost to Harman Bhangu of the B.C. Conservatives in the Oct. 19 vote.

It is the third byelection loss for the Trudeau government in 2024, having already lost two long-held seats in byelections earlier this year.

Fleischer, a local business owner and community leader, had faced questions from a local Métis community organization about her claims to Indigenous heritage before the vote.

The NDP's Sharma, whose party described her as a mental health advocate and anti-racism activist, finished third.

The Greens, Libertarian Party and People's Party also ran candidates in the riding.

Voter information cards were not sent out to constituents because of the weeks-long Canada Post strike.

Turnout was 16 per cent — significantly down compared to previous federal byelections this year, which saw around a 40 per cent turnout.

2 previous byelection defeats

Monday's vote was the 11th federal byelection since the 2021 election.

This year, the Liberals suffered two humiliating byelection defeats when they lost their strongholds of LaSalle-Émard-Verdun and Toronto-St. Paul's to the Bloc Québécois and the Conservatives, respectively.

Cloverdale—Langley City covers an area of Surrey, B.C., as well as the entire City of Langley in suburban Metro Vancouver.

The 2021 census showed it had around 130,000 residents, and Elections Canada says there were 92,061 registered voters in the riding.

A bus stop election sign shows Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh on the left side with the words 'crime and chaos,' in contrast with Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre and candidate Tamara Jansen with the words 'stop the crime.'   An election sign put up by the Conservative Party is pictured in the Cloverdale-Langley City riding. This will be the 11th federal byelection since the 2021 election. (CBC)

Campaigns in Cloverdale—Langley City have been closely fought in the previous two elections, with Aldag losing to Jansen by fewer than 1,500 votes in 2019, and winning by about 1,650 votes in 2021.

All three provincial ridings in Langley were won by the B.C. Conservatives in the October provincial election. The B.C. Conservatives have no official relationship with the federal Conservatives.

The Numbers: Liberals end year at their lowest in the polls

Dec 12, 2024 The Numbers
This week on The Numbers, we break down the latest federal polling that continues to look rough for Justin Trudeau. Next week’s byelection in the B.C. riding of Cloverdale–Langley City also looks rough for the Liberals, as the Conservatives appear likely to flip the seat that has gone back and forth between the two parties since 2015. We also take a look at the latest premier approval ratings, how things are shaping up for Doug Ford in Ontario and just who is the favourite in next week’s Alberta provincial byelection in Lethbridge-West.

How are byelection candidates in Cloverdale-Langley City getting the vote out during postal disruption?

Due to the timing, candidates and parties vying for the seat are expecting a "really low" voter turnout.

Residents in the federal riding of Cloverdale-Langley City will head to the polls on Monday to elect a new Member of Parliament, but due to the timing of the byelection, candidates are expecting a low voter turnout.

The national postal strike limited traditional communications, and with the approaching holiday season and a general election on the horizon, political parties are facing significant challenges in mobilizing voters.

The federal byelection was called in the riding after former Liberal MP John Aldag resigned to run for the NDP in this year’s provincial election. Six candidates are campaigning in the riding, including Tamara Jansen, the federal Conservative candidate and former MP who held the seat from 2019 to 2021.

“I think voter turnout is going to be really low,” said Tony Cook, president of the regional association of the People’s Party of Canada, who has been campaigning for candidate Ian Kennedy.

“My feeling from knocking on doors with Ian is that everyone knows there’s an election — but everybody is worn out, and they know we’re coming back again in October 2025,” said Cook.

Elections Canada said early voting, which wrapped up Tuesday, show that the byelection turnout is about 75 per cent lower than in the last general election.

“According to the preliminary figures, 5,368 electors voted at the advance polls in this byelection,” Elections Canada said in a news release, noting that some polls may not yet have been reported. By comparison, preliminary figures from the 2021 general election showed that 20,845 people cast advance ballots.

“Byelections normally experience lower turnout,” Green party candidate Pat McCutcheon said. “But I think the Cloverdale-Langley City byelection turnout will be lower than normal.”

Cloverdale-Langley City covers an area of Surrey as well as the entire City of Langley. The 2021 census showed there were around 130,000 residents. As of Nov. 10, there were 88,348 voters on the electors list.

Due to the postal dispute, traditional mail communications — including Elections Canada voter information cards and political party pamphlets — were disrupted.

McCutcheon agrees that the job action comes during a time of voter fatigue from the recent provincial election and amidst distractions from seasonal activities.

“Voters are aware there will be a federal general election sometime in the next 10 months,” he added.

To boost voter turnout in Cloverdale-Langley City, the parties have focused on in-person events, including attending all-candidate meetings, meeting with special interest groups, and distributing campaign flyers and lawn signs.

Vanessa Sharma, the federal NDP candidate, says she expressed support striking  for postal workers as part of her campaign.

“I think standing with them is more important to me. I know I’m nervous for everyone else in the public sector who’s going into bargaining next year — like ICBC and B.C. Hydro employees,” Sharma said.

“How do you get voters to come out while, at the same time, supporting your union workers? It’s been a juggle.”

The other candidates running in the riding are Madison Fleischer for the federal Liberals, and Alex Joehl for the Libertarian Party.

Elections Canada has informed voters via its website that they will not be receiving voter information cards in the mail. In response, it has added extra public communication initiatives.

Voters don’t need a voter information card, they can enter their postal code to find their assigned polling station, check its accessibility, and consult the list of accepted ID to prove identity and address.

Its alternative public messaging includes social media, radio, and print campaigns to help electors locate their polling stations without the voter information card, as well as signage on billboards, bus shelters, gyms, malls and campuses.

This byelection for the federal seat is the 11th campaign since the 2021 federal election.

Polling stations in the riding will be open on Dec. 16 from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Dear David,

The PC Party of New Brunswick recently submitted a Google advertisement tying New Brunswick Liberal leader Susan Holt to her federal counterpart Justin Trudeau.

The ad simply pointed out the obvious: a Liberal government in New Brunswick will be just as disastrous as the Liberal government in Ottawa.

But here’s the thing: Google blocked the ad, stating that the content violated advertising guidelines.

Which guidelines? According to Google, speaking about Justin Trudeau is forbidden — a strictly federal matter that cannot be discussed by provincial parties.

Google is actively prohibiting a political party from talking about the disastrous record of a sitting Liberal Prime Minister — and how a Liberal premier would bring the same destruction at the provincial level.

Under the guise of accountability, Big Tech is once again shilling for their allies in the Liberal Party.

DONATE NOW

This attack on free speech comes in the middle of a tight race between the New Brunswick Liberals and the PCs.

Unsurprisingly, Susan Holt — the leader of the New Brunswick chapter of the Liberal Party — is running away from Justin Trudeau’s disastrous record.

But make no mistake: there is no daylight between Justin Trudeau’s Liberals and Susan Holt’s Liberals.

Just like Justin Trudeau, Susan Holt wants to block parents from being involved in the education of their children, plans to distribute hard drugs on New Brunswick streets, and has promised up to $6 billion in new spending that will come from increased taxes or new debt.

A far left-wing party is even planning to prop up a minority Liberal government with a secret list of demands. Sound familiar?

Susan Holt and the New Brunswick Liberals want to do to New Brunswick what Justin Trudeau and the federal Liberals have done to Canada — and Big Tech is helping make it happen.

Premier Blaine Higgs and the New Brunswick PC Party are working hard to defeat the Liberals in New Brunswick and show Justin Trudeau that his destructive policies have no place in Canada.

Because Google is blocking PC ads and the biased news media will not report the facts, however, Premier Higgs will need to find new ways to reach New Brunswick voters.

Conservatives across Canada are able to help. Anyone in Canada can donate to the PCs and help Premier Higgs deliver economic prosperity, family values, and free speech to the good people of New Brunswick.

Can you contribute $50, or $100, or $200 to help New Brunswick get four more years of conservative government and send Justin Trudeau a clear message that Canada has had enough of his radical Liberal agenda?

You can donate here.

Let’s remind Justin Trudeau and the Liberals — all Liberals — that we are fighting back.

Donald Trump complained of unfair treatment in a defiant and rambling
performance on the witness stand on Monday, prompting the judge
overseeing his New York civil business fraud trial to threaten to cut
his testimony short.

Under questioning about his company's accounting practices, Trump
repeatedly clashed with Judge Arthur Engoron, who is weighing whether
to impose hundreds of millions of dollars in fines and other penalties
that could hobble the real estate empire that vaulted Trump to
prominence.

Engoron warned the former U.S. president, who's running for office
again in 2024 as a Republican, that he might remove him from the
witness stand if he did not answer questions directly.

"Mr. Kise, can you control your client?" Engoron asked Trump lawyer
Christopher Kise. "This is not a political rally. This is a
courtroom."

On the stand, Trump acknowledged that his company did not provide
accurate estimates of the value of apartment towers, golf courses and
other assets. New York state lawyers said those values were pumped up
to win better financing terms, and Engoron has already ruled that they
were fraudulent.

But Trump said many of them, such as his Mar-a-Lago estate and Doral
golf course in Florida, were undervalued and that banks did not take
the valuations seriously.

"It wasn't important. You've made it important, but it wasn't," Trump
said of the estimates.

New York state lawyers argue those methods enabled him to win
favourable financing terms by pumping up the value of his golf
courses, apartment towers and other assets at a time when many lenders
refused to do business with him. They say such activity earned him
$100 million US and exaggerated his wealth by $2 billion.

Trump, 77, has denied wrongdoing, but the judge in the case ruled in a
partial summary judgment before testimony even started that the Trump
Organization had submitted "fraudulent valuations." The weeks-long
trial will determine judgments on six other counts, the scope of
damages and the future of the corporation in New York state, though
any verdict will be appealed.
'I'm sure the judge will rule against me'

Before entering the courtroom on Monday, Trump complained to reporters
about what he characterized as "an unfair situation" and a politically
motivated prosecution. The current case, as well as the four criminal
prosecutions he faces, result from investigations that predate Trump's
announcement in November 2022 that he would run again for president as
a Republican.

Trump's complaints extended to the witness stand, where he accused
legal authorities of paying unduly close attention to his business
after he won the 2016 presidential election.

"I'm sure the judge will rule against me because he always rules
against me," he said.

Trump's indictments explained: Why Georgia is charging him like a 'Mob
boss' | About That
Duration 15:05
Former U.S. president Donald Trump is facing criminal charges for the
fourth time, after a Georgia grand jury issued a sweeping indictment
accusing him of trying to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden
and of running a ‘criminal enterprise.’ Andrew Chang explains all of
the charges, and why the latest are so significant.
More drama outside the courtroom

The judge's move to keep Trump's testimony on track prompted another
of his lawyers to object outside the courtroom during the lunch break.

"Everyone has the right in this country to get up and put [out] a
defence," lawyer Alina Habba said. "But I was told to sit down today,"
she said, while accusing the judge of yelling and slamming a table.

There were no cameras allowed inside the courtroom. There were two
overflow rooms in the courthouse packed with observers.

Trump's election loss

Do Trump's actions after last election make him ineligible for
2024? U.S. courts are about to decide

On the first break from his testimony, Trump was silent in response to
a reporter's question, making a gesture to demonstrate his lips were
sealed.

New York Attorney General Letitia James is seeking $250 million in
fines, as well as restrictions that would prevent Trump and his sons,
Eric and Donald Jr., from doing business in their home state.

Last week, Trump's sons each testified that the organization relied on
accountants and lawyers to verify the accuracy of financial documents
that Engoron has ruled to be fraudulent.
Gag order violations

Trump has accumulated fines of $15,000 US during the trial for twice
violating a limited gag order that prevents him from criticizing court
staff. His lawyers have chafed at that order and indicated they might
use it as the basis for an appeal, but Engoron expanded it on Friday
to cover them as well.

Unlike the four criminal cases Trump faces, this civil trial does not
threaten to put him in prison as he mounts another presidential
campaign. Indeed, Trump has been leaning into the experience, using it
to solicit campaign donations and argue that he is being targeted for
his political views.

Donald Trump Jr. took the stand on Wednesday in New York as part of a
civil fraud case against his father, former president Donald Trump.
Trump Jr. was the first of three adult siblings to testify, and he was
asked about business practices of the Trump empire.

The trial was originally scheduled to run through early December but
could wrap up sooner as the state calls its final witnesses this week.
It is unclear how many witnesses the defence will call.

Trump's daughter Ivanka is due to testify on Wednesday, although she
is not among the defendants in the case.

Patriot,

This is my last email to you before I take the witness stand for the
sham trial in New York City where an extremely anti-Trump Attorney
General is trying to impose the “corporate death penalty” upon me and
even my family.

Can you believe I have to once again spend yet another day of the
election cycle in the courthouse?

This is a level of Election Interference never before seen in our country.

We are watching the ruling party weaponize the legal system to try and
destroy its leading opponent by any means possible – whether that be
removing my name from the ballot, financial ruin, or even
imprisonment.

This is how dictatorships are born.

But even as I am currently making my way over to the Manhattan
Courthouse to take the witness stand as an innocent man, I am still
telling you not to lose hope!

Just yesterday, a new poll conducted by the New York Times (how
fitting) showed that we are crushing Crooked Joe in a landslide:

New York Times: “Trump Leads Biden in Nearly Every Battleground State,
New Poll Finds”

But I honestly like this headline from Axios even more…

“NYT poll: Trump set to romp Biden”

I think that sounds so much better, don’t you agree?

As you can see, my spirits are still up! No matter how much the Left
tries to break me, they will never succeed, because I am more
committed than ever before to save America. Are you?

If you’re doing poorly right now due to the very corrupt person in the
White House who is letting our country burn in order to try and
imprison me, then please don’t even think about donating. But, if you
can, I trust you know how high the stakes of this election are.

Please make a contribution of any amount as Crooked Joe’s henchmen
force me to take the witness stand today in yet another act of
Election Interference.

>>    One major difference between the case being held in a federal
