there are a series of emergencies.
There is the emergency of the family whose 14-year-old daughter has
attempted suicide after two years of isolation from sports, social
interaction and other healthy activities that sustain a happy and
heartful mind. There is the emergency of the federal public servant
who, for unrecognized medical reasons, cannot get vaccinated and is
now deprived of an income and a job. There is the emergency of the
trucker who was hailed as a hero while driving our goods and services
across international borders unvaccinated for over two years, who
suddenly was declared a public health threat and deprived of his job
as well. There is the emergency of the 32-year-old still living in his
mom's basement, because under the pretext of COVID, the government
printed so much money that it now costs $836,000 for the average
house. There is the emergency of the single mother trembling as she
walks down the grocery aisle because she cannot afford a basket of
affordable goods, because the government has inflated her cost of
living. There is the emergency created by the regulatory gatekeepers
who keep people in poverty by blockading first nations people from the
ability to develop their own resources and blockading immigrants from
the ability to work in the very professions for which they are trained
and qualified.
These are the emergencies we should be addressing, but instead, the
Prime Minister has created a new emergency. What is his motivation? Of
course, it is to divide and conquer. How did this all start? Let us
remember that the Prime Minister suddenly imposed a brand new vaccine
mandate on the very truckers who had been free to travel across
borders without a vaccine, and he did it at a time when provinces and
countries around the world were removing vaccine mandates. He did it
to a group of people who are by far the least likely to transmit a
virus because they work and sleep all by themselves 22 hours a day.
Media asked his health minister and his chief medical officer for
evidence supporting the decision. Neither had any. In fact, the
medical officer said it was time to return to normalcy, yet the Prime
Minister, in spite of all these facts, brought in this new mandate to
deprive people of their living, because he knew that it would spark in
them a sense of desperation. If he could deprive them of their
incomes, they would be so desperate that they would have to rise up
and protest, and then he could further demonize them, call them names,
attack their motives, belittle them and dehumanize them in order to
galvanize the majority against the minority.
This must be the political opportunity his Deputy Prime Minister spoke
about when she described what COVID represented to the government. The
Liberals have attempted to amplify and take advantage of every pain,
every fear and every tragedy that has struck throughout this pandemic
in order to divide one person against another and replace the people's
freedom with the government's power.
At the beginning of the pandemic, it started immediately. The
government attempted to ram through a law that would have given it the
power to raise any tax to any level for any reason without a vote in
Parliament. It tried to pass Bill C-10 to strip away free speech
online. Thankfully, Conservatives blocked it from doing so. The Prime
Minister's authorities have said they want to track Canadian cell
phones for the next five years. Now this, the Emergencies Act, is the
latest and greatest example of attacks on our freedom.
Ostensibly, it was meant to stop blockades, which had already ended
before he even brought forward this legislation. In Alberta, in
Manitoba, and at the Ambassador Bridge, those blockades were ended
peacefully, in some cases with protesters hugging the police officers
and bringing the matters to a successful close so that goods and
services could resume.
Instead, in that context, the Prime Minister brought in a law that not
even Jean Chrétien brought in after 9/11 killed dozens of Canadians in
a terrorist attack, that not even former prime minister Harper brought
in when a terrorist murdered a Canadian soldier at the war monument
and came running into Centre Block spraying bullets in all directions,
and that not even the current Prime Minister brought in when blockades
by first nations were standing in the way of those who were attempting
to build the Coastal GasLink pipeline. For the first time in this
law's three-decade history, the Prime Minister brings it in to address
what he says was a protest in front of Parliament Hill.
Ironically, this power goes beyond any of the protests and/or
blockades the Prime Minister claims to want to address. For example,
it would allow governments and banks to seize people's bank accounts
and money for donating to the wrong political cause. One journalist
asked the justice minister if small sums donated, for example, to
support an end to vaccine mandates could get someone's bank account
frozen. The minister did not deny it. Instead, he said that people who
make donations of that kind should be very worried.
To freeze people's bank accounts is not just an attack on their
finances but on their personal security. If their bank accounts are
frozen, they cannot buy food, they cannot buy fuel, they cannot pay
their children's daycare fees and, under this law, they can face this
personal attack without being charged with a single, solitary crime.
The Prime Minister says that this is time-limited, yet his own finance
minister said she wants some of the tools to be permanent. He said it
will be geographically targeted, yet his own parliamentary secretary
for justice said that “the act technically applies to all of Canada”.
The rules apply everywhere and indefinitely.
Finally, there is nothing in the act that limits the kinds of
financial actions that could lead to people's accounts being frozen,
and if they are frozen unjustifiably, the act specifically bans people
from suing either the bank or the government for that unjustifiable
treatment, opening the door for people who have nothing whatsoever to
do with either the blockades or the protest having their bank accounts
frozen without cause.
The Prime Minister says he wants to do this to remove the blockades,
blockades that have already been removed. He says he needs these
unprecedented powers in order to bring our country's order back to the
pre-protest period, although across this country that has already
occurred.
I say to the House that I oppose this unjustifiable power grab and, as
prime minister of Canada, I will ensure that no such abuse of power
ever happens again.
However, I say that we should end some of these blockades. Madame
Speaker, we can remove all of the blockades. Let us remove the
mandates and restrictions that are blocking people's livelihoods
today. Let us end the blockades on freedom of speech that the
government is trying to erect with its online censorship bill. Let us
end the regulatory blockades so that builders can provide affordable
homes, first nations can develop their economies and escape poverty,
and newcomers can actually work in the professions for which they were
trained. Let us remove the inflationary taxes, deficits, and money
printing so that people's wages can again buy them homes, food and
fuel, let us remove that blockade.
Let us get people back in control of their lives by making Canada the
freest place on earth: free to speak, free to think, free to work,
free to worship, free to own a home and build one's own destiny. Let
us bind up the nation's wounds with compassion and respect and unite
our country for freedom.

Minister Mendicino is lying to Canadians. On 13 occasions in the House of Commons, at various committees during media reports to the press and television, he indicated that law enforcement including the OPP specifically asked for the invocation of the Emergencies Act. He perpetuated this lie by indicating that not only did you request it, that he received advice either from the OPP Commissioner, or a member of your legal team that the Government of Canada had met the threshold to invoke the Emergencies Act. face off in the House of Commons against Alberta Conservative MP
Jasraj Singh Hallan, who has been named his party's new finance

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has released his list of
parliamentary critics. He's chosen Alberta Conservative MP Jasraj
Singh Hallan as the party's new finance critic, pitting him against
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Poilievre has appointed 51 critics and another 20 associate critics.
But the list leaves out some very high-profile Conservatives, such as
MP Ed Fast — who supported former Quebec premier Jean Charest for the
leadership — and Michelle Rempel Garner, who served as leadership
campaign co-chair for Patrick Brown.
Former Conservative leader Erin O'Toole told the National Post last
month that he did not want a critic role because he did not want to be
a distraction to the team. He was left off the list.
Poilievre named Quebec Conservative MP Gérard Deltell as the party's
environment critic. Minister of Environment and Climate Change Steven
Guilbeault is also from Quebec.
Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities
Dominic LeBlanc will face off against Ontario MP, former leadership
candidate and prominent social conservative Leslyn Lewis, who becomes
the new infrastructure and communities critic.
Rob Moore, MP for the New Brunswick riding of Fundy Royal, has been
named the new justice critic, pitting him against Justice Minister and
Attorney General David Lametti. Defence Minister Anita Anand will do
battle with new defence critic MP James Bezan.

Poilievre, who pledged during his leadership campaign to end vaccine
mandates, has created a new position of civil liberties critic for
Ontario MP Marilyn Gladu.
Last year, Gladu led the formation of a "civil liberties caucus" of
Conservative MPs that took on concerns about vaccination and opposed
mandates.
Gladu told CBC News that her new role, which does not have a
corresponding cabinet position, was Poilievre's idea.
"This is an expression that he's going to be vigilant about protecting
people's freedom," she said, noting her new role also includes looking
at issues like digital privacy and censorship.

nine-member group that includes two LGBT MPs and one of the few
persons of colour in the Conservative caucus.
Ontario MP Melissa Lantsman, a lesbian, and Alberta MP Tim Uppal, who
is South Asian, now serve as Poilievre's deputy leaders. Both
supported him in the leadership race.
Since her election last year, Lantsman, a former political staffer,
lobbyist and CBC commentator, has been a fierce critic of the
government's handling of the COVID-19 file.
Uppal, who represents Edmonton in the Commons, served as minister of
state for democratic reform and later as minister of state for
multiculturalism in former prime minister Stephen Harper's government.
Former Conservative leader Andrew Scheer, who was also a strong
supporter of Poilievre during the leadership contest, was named
opposition House leader.

Thank you for your email. My office has been inundated with similar emails.
On Monday February the 21st, the Liberals and NDP voted in favour of the Emergencies Act and called the situation at hand a public order emergency. It was the first time that this act has ever been used and the act preceding the emergencies act was only used in WW1, WW2 and the FLQ Crisis. This vote was specifically disturbing because it occurred despite the fact that all of the cross border protests were concluded and the one in Ottawa was disbursed and disbanding. It was a dark day for personal freedoms and peaceful protests in Canada.
The Prime Minister appears to have made no effort to de-escalate the situation. Instead, he has insulted and disrespected Canadians, and then when it blew up, instead of apologizing and listening to what people had to say, jumped straight to the most extreme measures to deal with the protests.
Imposing powers of the Emergencies Act sets a dangerous precedent. The Government of Canada included in its laundry list of powers the ability to freeze the funds of those supporting the demonstrators. Governments should not have the power to close the bank accounts of hardworking Canadians simply on the suspicion of supporting causes of which the government doesn’t approve. This is a slippery slope, and not how the government should operate in a free and democratic society.
Some of my comments are contained in this speech I delivered in the House of Commons on behalf of constituents. It is worth watching as it clearly shows where I stand and the actions that I personally took to stop this government overreach. The video can be viewed here: https://fb.watch/bmjT0H1Fs2/
In an even more baffling turn of events, less than 48 hours after voting to implemented the Emergencies Act the Prime Minister announced on February the 23rd that the “situation is no longer an emergency” and revoked the Emergencies Act. Although it is unnerving to even consider that the PM would invoke the Act to silence his political adversaries, I am thankful that the direct, powerful and prolonged pressure by Conservative MPs and engaged constituents such as yourself seems to have impacted his decision. In the words of our interim Conservative Leader “Nothing has changed between Monday and today other than a flood of concerns from Canadian citizens, bad press, and international ridicule.”
This is not a win, our work is not over yet. What all Canadians need now is a clear plan out of this pandemic by ending the mandates and a return to normal life. Unfortunately, the Liberals and NDP are unwilling to even discuss a plan for Canadians and unwilling to put their political differences aside.
I will continue to be your strong voice in Ottawa and I hope that I can continue to count on your support as I hold this government to account for their actions.

Genuis is currently a member of the Government Operations Committee and has recently served as a Vice-Chair of both the Foreign Affairs Committee and its Subcommittee on International Human Rights.
Genuis has been active on many high-profile domestic and international human rights issues. His interest in human rights was shaped by the experience of his grandmother, a Holocaust survivor. Genuis is also a passionate advocate for free speech, for increased efforts to combat violence against women, and for Canadian energy. He is the sponsor of Bill C-257, a bill to add “political belief and activity” to the Canadian Human Rights Act as prohibited grounds of discrimination, Bill C-350, a bill combatting torture and terrorism, and Motion 57, a motion to promote bystander awareness and intervention training to combat violence.
Genuis holds degrees from Carleton University and the London
School of Economics. He runs a bi-weekly podcast called Resuming Debate
and spends any spare time reading history books and playing strategy
games with his children. The family also includes a Newfoundlander dog
named Grace.

Garnett Genuis MP /dʒɛnɪs/ (born January 23, 1987) is a Canadian politician who has served as the member of Parliament for the riding of Sherwood Park—Fort Saskatchewan (in Alberta) since 2015.[3]
Early life
Genuis was born in 1987[4] and grew up in Strathcona County, before moving to attend Carleton University in Ottawa where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Public Affairs and Policy Management in February 2010. While there, he wrote a regular column for the Sherwood Park News as a political correspondent. Genuis’ experience helped him obtain a position as assistant to former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and adviser on the staff of former minister Rona Ambrose. Genuis then obtained a master's degree in public policy from the London School of Economics in December 2011.[5]
Political career
2012: Alberta general election
Genuis ran in the 2012 Alberta general election as the Wildrose MLA candidate for Sherwood Park. He lost to Progressive Conservative candidate Cathy Olesen.[6]
2015 Term: Maclean's Parliamentarian of the Year
In March 2014, Genuis announced his intention to seek the Conservative nomination for the 2015 Canadian federal election in the newly formed riding of Sherwood Park—Fort Saskatchewan. He won the nomination in November 2014.[5] Genuis won the federal election on October 19, 2015, capturing 64% of the votes in the riding[7] and becoming its member of Parliament. The Conservative government of the day lost the election to the Liberals.
In November 2015, Genuis was appointed deputy critic for Human Rights and Religious Freedom. He served under head critic David Anderson.[8] On August 30, 2017, he was made Deputy Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, after leaving his previous position.
In March 2016, Genuis was named one of the most outspoken MPs in the House of Commons by Maclean's Magazine.[9] In November 2017, Genuis was named Maclean's Parliamentarian of the Year, based on a vote by members of the House of Commons. Genuis was the youngest recipient to date of the award.[10]
In a 2017 episode of the television series Political Blind Date, Genuis and Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, the Liberal MP for Beaches—East York, discussed their differing perspectives on the legalization of marijuana in Canada.[11]
In May 2019, Genuis supported Conservative leader Andrew Scheer's vision for a new foreign policy.[12]
2019 Term: Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism & International Development and Human Rights
Genuis was re-elected to the 43rd Canadian Parliament on October 21, 2019, with 73.4% of the popular vote. His party, however, only won 121 of 338 seats, so he remained in opposition.[3] In 2019, he was given the role as Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism by then leader of the Conservative Party Andrew Scheer.[13]
Genuis was a member of the House of Commons Special Committee on Canada-China Relations.[14] He has voiced concerns over Huawei's influence on Canadian campuses.[15] Genuis was against the appointment of Dominic Barton as Canada's ambassador to China, suggesting that Barton's past work advising more than 20 Chinese state-owned enterprises put him in a conflict of interest.[14] Genuis was appointed as the shadow minister for international development and human rights by the Conservative Party of Canada's new leader Erin O'Toole in September 2020.[16]
2021 Term: Shadow Minister for International Development
Genuis was re-elected to the 44th Canadian Parliament in the 2021 Canadian federal election with 57.5% of the popular vote in his constituency. Though he faced a 16% decline in support compared to the 2019 general election. Following the election, Genuis was vocally supportive of Erin O'Toole's leadership of the party after the latter faced criticism for failing to increase the party's seat count from 2019.
Garnett Genuis is currently a committee member of FAAE (Foreign Affairs and International Development) & CIMM (Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration).[17]
Policies
Human Rights Advocacy
Genuis has been outspoken about various topics related to human rights in China. He has been a strong supporter of the Tibet cause. In January 2016, Genuis met with the Dalai Lama to discuss human rights and religious freedom.[18]
In June 2022, Genuis, along with Senator Leo Housakos, hosted a press conference with Enes Kanter Freedom calling on the Canadian government to stop the importation of products made with forced labour coming from the Xinjiang Region.[19]
Genuis supported Bill S-223, An Act to amend the Criminal Code and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (trafficking in human organs). This bill aims to protect people from the exploitative practices of organ harvesting.[20][21]
In April 2022, Genuis introduced private member motion M-57. This called on the Canadian government to support bystander intervention training as a tool to combat sexual harassment and violence, hate crimes, and other forms of criminal activity.[22]
Genuis jointly seconded the private member's bill C-281, known as the International Human Rights Act, sponsored by Philip Lawrence. This Bill contains several different important measures aimed at advancing international human rights, including changes to the Magnitsky Act, the Broadcasting Act, and the Prohibiting Cluster Munitions Act.[23][24]
Democratic Advocacy
Genuis spoke about democratic decline in Canada in the House of Commons, citing the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in Stockholm. He said, “In the key category of checks on government, Canada’s score has dropped precipitously since 2015. We are now lower than the United States and every single country in western Europe. Weakening checks on government power is weakening Canadian democracy, and international experts are noticing.”[25]
In July 2022, Genuis also authored an opinion piece on True North, where he wrote, “We are currently dealing with the failure of the government to hand over documents ordered by Parliament, the arbitrary use of the Emergencies Act and failure to hand over cabinet documents to the inquiry charged with looking into that action, the imposition of a draconian “Motion 11,” that gives the executive unprecedented powers to control the Parliamentary agenda, and alleged interference by the government in an RCMP investigation. These are just the key elements of democratic decline that we have seen in the last few months.”[26]
International Development
Genuis has been a vocal advocate for Bill S-216 – An Act to amend the Income Tax Act (use of resources of a registered charity).[27] S-216 also known as the Effective Charities Act, seeks to amend the Income Tax Act to ensure that charities can effectively collaborate with a wider range of charities (both domestic and international) including those without charitable status.[28]
Energy Security
Genuis has been an outspoken supporter of promoting energy security in the West using Canadian oil and gas, especially since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. In a House of Commons speech, he said, “Canada should fuel democracy by providing our European friends with a conflict-free and reliable alternative, and one that is, in many cases, better for the environment than the other options available.”[29]
Reproductive Health
Garnett has been identified by the Campaign Life Coalition as having a perfect voting score for Life and family issues introduced to the House of Commons.[30] Contributors to the Sherwood Park-Fort Saskatchewan Conservative Riding Association sponsored anti-abortion ads that appeared on buses in Vancouver, BC.[31]
Genuis voted in support of Bill C-233 - An Act to amend the Criminal Code (sex-selective abortion), to combat sex-based discrimination, making it a criminal offence for a medical practitioner to knowingly perform an abortion sought solely on the grounds of the child's genetic sex.[32][33]
Conversion Therapy
On June 22, 2021, Genuis was one of 63 MPs to vote against Bill C-6, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (conversion therapy), which was passed by majority vote, making certain aspects of conversion therapy a crime, including "causing a child to undergo conversion therapy." Genuis stated he thinks banning conversion therapy is reasonable, but Bill C-6 was too broad in scope, and therefore did more than ban conversion therapy. Genuis consequently called on the Canadian government to fix the definition of "Conversion Therapy" in Bill C-6 by doing many things, one of which would be to ensure that no laws discriminate against Canadians by limiting what services they can receive based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.[34][35][36][37]
Residential Schooling
Genuis believes in the philosophical principle of the separation of church and state.[38] This is partly why he voted against a request for papal apology for the Catholic Church's role in residential schools.[39] The motion was put forward in reaction to the discovery of 215 alleged unmarked graves of children at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School, and was a reiteration of the same motion tabled in May 2018.[39][40]

Podcast (Resuming Debate)
Genuis hosts a podcast called Resuming Debate, where a wide range of experts, authors, and academics speak on diverse topics. The stated purpose of the podcast is to inject an element of civil conversation/debate into the Canadian political climate. Some notable guests from the Resuming Debate podcast include Charles Hoskinson, Ross Douthat, Andrew Bennett (academic), Elizabeth May, and Bob Fu.[41]

Personal life
Genuis is a Roman Catholic. He is married to Dr. Rebecca Genuis and together, they have five children.[44]
