Poilievre says the federal election can't just be about Donald Trump
Poilievre takes aim at Carney's ability to handle Trump and his tariffs
Conservative leader says Carney is using U.S. president and his economic threats as a campaign 'distraction'
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre speaks during a campaign stop in Milton, Ont., Thursday, April 10, 2025. (Frank Gunn/Canadian Press)
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre took aim at his Liberal opponent Thursday over his handling of the Canada-U.S. relationship, saying Mark Carney has so far "failed" to secure any tariff relief for Canada, even as other countries get something of a break.
Carney, meanwhile, said U.S. President Donald Trump's much-maligned "reciprocal" tariffs never applied to Canada in the first place, and he has agreed to sit down with the Americans right after this election — if he wins — to negotiate a comprehensive new economic and security agreement.
As part of his three-pronged tariff plan, Trump last week announced huge "reciprocal" tariffs on virtually every country in the world except Canada and Mexico. The fact that Canada dodged these particular tariffs was seen as a victory, and Carney called it progress and "the best of a series of bad deals."
On Wednesday, Trump relented and temporarily dialled back the more onerous tariff rates for 90 days after the stock market tanked amid the trade chaos.
"Other countries got a pause in tariffs while he failed to secure one here in Canada," Poilievre said of Carney during a housing announcement in Milton, Ont.
But Trump is still pushing ahead with a "reciprocal" 10 per cent tariff on goods coming from nearly every country — again, except Canada and Mexico, which were never hit by these particular tariffs — and a new, higher 125 per cent rate for all Chinese goods after that country retaliated.
"This, of course, happened after Prime Minister Carney boasted he had had a productive call with President Trump and that he had made 'progress.' What progress? There are more American tariffs on Canada today than there were when Prime Minister Carney took office, while dozens of other countries have secured pauses," Poilievre said.
WATCH: Poilievre condemns Trump for keeping tariffs on Canada:Poilievre condemns Trump for keeping tariffs on Canada
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, speaking from Milton, Ont., on Day 19 of the election campaign, responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent tariffs by saying, ‘It remains a mystery why the president treats Canada worse than dozens of other far-away countries who are not America’s best friend.’It's true that Trump has hit Canada harder than other countries with some of his other tariff schemes.
The president's previously announced global levies on steel, aluminum and most foreign-made autos are still in effect, and U.S. importers will have to pay tariffs when they bring those Canadian products stateside.
Trump's levies to punish Canada for supposedly being a major source of fentanyl and migrants — based on exaggerated claims that are not backed up by border data — are also in effect, but Canada has secured some exemptions to those tariffs under the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
All of these U.S. tariffs, except for the ones on autos, were in place before Carney was sworn in as prime minister in mid-March.
Still, Poilievre said the Liberal leader should have gotten more out of Trump.
"Carney's biggest election promise and distraction are empty. He's telling you to forget about the lost Liberal decade of rising costs, crime, taxes and housing prices because he's somehow a magical negotiator, but we're learning that is not true. He does not control President Trump — no one does," Poilievre said.
Despite stating no Canadian leader can control Trump, Poilievre also said he will work to "end the tariffs on Day 1 after the next election" if he wins.
Poilievre has previously pitched pausing Canadian retaliatory tariffs as part of a push to hammer out a new trade deal with Trump.
Carney said he welcomed Trump's decision to hold off on some of his reciprocal tariffs, saying it's a "reprieve for the global economy."
As for the tariffs Canada is still facing, Carney said they are "threatening our families, our workers and our businesses, and while they are being imposed under different pretences, they are unjustified, unwarranted and misguided."
Carney said he will pause his campaign and return to Ottawa on Friday to convene a special meeting of his Canada-U.S. cabinet committee to discuss the government's strategy in the wake of the recent economic convulsions.
WATCH: Direct tariffs still affecting Canada, Carney says when asked about dropping retaliatory measures:Direct tariffs still affecting Canada, Carney says when asked about dropping retaliatory measures
Asked what it would take for Canada to pause its retaliatory tariffs on the U.S. like the European Union has, Liberal Leader Mark Carney, speaking in Brampton Ont., Thursday, said Canada remains subject to 'a series of direct tariffs that are still in place.' He added that following the election, the next prime minister will meet with the U.S. president.Carney said this upcoming vote is "the most consequential election of our lifetime," and he's working hard to represent Canada in its negotiations with the U.S. over the future of the bilateral relationship.
"The stakes have never been higher," he said.
Carney said he spoke with Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, earlier Thursday and he is pressing for closer trade ties with like-minded, "reliable" allies now that the Canada-U.S. relationship is on shaky ground.

'We look a little stupid,' says Quebec manufacturer stung by Canada's counter-tariffs
Plywood supplier who imports raw materials from U.S. has been paying 25% levy since March 4
Louis Lafleur's company, Les Boisés Lafleur, produces wood veneers. His company imports 100 per cent of its raw material from the U.S. (Susan Campbell/CBC)Ask Louis Lafleur how he's feeling about American tariffs and his response comes quickly.
"Ask me how I feel about Canadian tariffs!"
Lafleur is the president of Les Boisés Lafleur, in Victoriaville, Que., 140 kilometres northeast of Montreal. The company makes wood veneers: thin sheets of a wide variety of species — maple, ash, eucalyptus — that are then applied to plywood used for countertops and furniture.
When talk of U.S. tariffs began shortly after the presidential inauguration last January, Lafleur started losing sleep. He exports three-quarters of his finished product to the U.S. and was dreading duties.
At first, his American clients, who were convinced tariffs wouldn't stay in place long, said they'd pay a little more to help absorb the hit.
The U.S. tariffs on his exports haven't materialized, but in February, before he left office, Justin Trudeau announced a counter-tariff on $30 billion worth of goods entering Canada from the U.S. — including the category of wood Lafleur uses for his veneers.
He imports all of his wood from the U.S., and he's been paying a 25 per cent duty on those imports since March 4.
"My clients are saying, 'now you're complaining because your government [adds] a tariff?' We look a little stupid," Lafleur says.
LISTEN | Pain from counter-tariffs:Quebec AM 12:51Quebec manufacturers feeling pain from Canadian counter-tariffsWhen Canada didn't appear on the list of countries being slammed by U.S. 'reciprocal' tariffs, the consensus was we'd dodged a bullet. But there are business owners in Quebec who still feel like they're in the line of fire ... from their OWN government. Community Reporter Susan Campbell has the story of one manufacturer who says Canadian counter-tariffs could have devastating effects on his business.'Band-Aid on a broken bone'
Lafleur says he should be eligible for a duty drawback — a reimbursement for at least part of the money he's spending on counter-tariffs. But information isn't easy to find. He doesn't know how much he can count on or how long a request would take to process. In the meantime, he's playing it safe.
Les Boisés Lafleur would normally import six and a half truckloads of wood a month. Lafleur has only bought three since February.
"If I buy the wood and I don't get the money back, I'm going to lose a tremendous amount of money," he says.
Les Boisés Lafleur is buying less wood from the U.S. to cope with the impact of a counter-tariff applied by Canada. (Susan Campbell/CBC)
Fewer wood deliveries will mean reduced production for Lafleur's company. He has started reducing the workforce by a varying number of workers each week, typically between three and six.
Lafleur applied for help under a federal program put in place in early March to help companies to keep their staff, by allowing employees to share work and qualify for EI. But he calls that "a Band-Aid on a broken bone." He doesn't see the logic in making Canadian companies pay a price in this trade war.
"When the Trump administration said we're going to put a tariff, everyone agreed that it would be very, very bad for them. And our reaction to that? To do the same!" he hammers.
Lafleur thinks the laying of counter-tariffs is more about a political show than about what's good for business.
A manufacturing economy on the edge
The mayor of Victoriaville, Antoine Tardif, is president of the regional economic development council, Destination Entreprise.
He says the local economy has been booming since the COVID-19 pandemic. But since the beginning of the tariff war, government agencies that fund local projects, like the Development Bank of Canada and Investissement Québec, are taking a step back.
The mayor of Victoriaville, Antoine Tardif, says the two pillars of Centre-du-Québec's economy — manufacturing and agriculture — are potentially in for a hit from American tariffs. He says it's already making people nervous. (Susan Campbell/CBC)
"They have a lot of projects on hold because of the uncertainty this creates," Tardif says. "The investments aren't going on and for the city, the revenues won't be coming in."
Tariffs have been top of mind since the beginning of the current federal election campaign, and the leaders of Canada's major political parties have maintained a common front on the necessity of counter-tariffs as a response to the American administration.
- This Sunday, Cross Country Checkup is asking: Market turmoil, tariffs and a possible recession — What do you stand to lose? What questions do you have about surviving it? Leave your comment here and we may read it or call you back for our show on April 13th.
But businessmen like Lafleur are not alone in questioning the government response. Speaking to CBC Quebec, Concordia economist Moshe Lander underlined how this trade war is playing out during a federal election campaign.
"You need to be constantly going in front of a microphone and expressing your outrage, expressing your frustration and to be seen to be doing something," Lander says.
"And this idea of 'let's retaliate back on them' is unfortunately the best political thing to do, but it's not good economics."
Economic worries top of mind for voters
Conversations with voters in the Richmond—Arthabaska riding, where Boisés Lafleur operates, suggest economic matters are top of mind.
On a break from his job at a local grocery store, Maxime Gagnon says it's taxes and the cost of living that he's thinking about — and he's made a choice.
"Pierre Poilievre seems more accurate when he talks about finances," Gagnon said of the Conservative Party leader.
Maxime Gagnon is worried about income taxes and rising prices. He's voting Conservative, because he feels they'll respond to his concerns. (Susan Campbell/CBC)
Jean-Yves Houle says he'll vote for the federal leader who's speaking to his concerns.
"It's poverty. We need to find a way to make people's lives easier," Houle says.
The riding is currently represented by Independent MP Alain Rayes, who left the Conservative Party in 2022.
Jean-Yves Houle worries for the next generation, as he watches grocery prices rise. (Susan Campbell/CBC)
Lafleur, for his part, isn't willing to wait until election day to see how parties respond to his company's current situation. He's laying the responsibility at the feet of the sitting government.
"We have Marc Carney, who's a non-elected prime minister and he's running to be an elected prime minister," Lafleur says.
''If by April 28 there's still a 25 per cent tariff, I know damn well who I won't vote for."

Newly created Cape Breton riding may be one to watch in upcoming federal election
Published:
RESERVE MINES, N.S. — The highway in Reserve Mines, N.S., – located between Glace Bay and Sydney – appears to have an equal amount of red and blue election signs lining the roadway.
This may mean there’s an engaged voter base in the newly-created riding of Sydney-Glace Bay, with a variety of issues that are top-of-mind for voters.
“(I’m) probably looking at housing,” said one voter at Sydney’s Mayflower Mall. “The cost-of-living crisis is pretty unsubstantial right now.”
“Oh, health care, big time,” answered another voter when asked about top election priorities.
Cape Breton University political scientist Tom Urbaniak agreed that voter interest seems high both in Sydney-Glace Bay and in Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish.
“This has the feeling of being a generational election, that the results of this election will sort of set a path or set a course,” Urbaniak said on Thursday.
Urbaniak said, while there isn’t any hard polling data, the race in Sydney-Glace Bay appears to be a fairly close one.

However, he feels Liberal incumbent Mike Kelloway is still the favourite to win.
“So, I don’t think that the national Liberal headquarters right now are worried about this riding,” Urbaniak said. “If they are, then we might see the Liberal leader in Cape Breton next week.”
Along with the Conservatives Anna Manley, candidates are also on the ballot for the NDP (Kim Losier), the Peoples Party of Canada (Jeff Evely), the Marxist-Leninist Party of Canada (Nik Boisvert), the Canadian Future Party (Chris Gallant), the Libertarians (Michael Pittman), along with one Independent (Joe Ward).
The Green candidates in both ridings that include Cape Breton have withdrawn.
Urbaniak said while there are multiple strong campaigns on the ground, he doesn’t envision a scenario where the Liberals win a majority and lose Sydney-Glace Bay.
“If we’re watching election coverage and once the polls close we see Sydney-Glace Bay tilting towards the Conservatives, this is going to tell me that something is brewing nationally,” he predicted.
Meanwhile, with national pride currently a hot topic, voters were happy to weigh in on Thursday with what they want out of their next government.
“Just (someone who) cares the most about the everyday Canadian being able to afford to live in Canada,” one voter said.
“I don’t actually know who I’m going to vote for until I actually get to the voter booth,” added another.
Advance polling starts on Friday, ahead of the April 28 federal election date.

Economic development minister won't talk to prospective Sysco buyer
CBC News · Posted: Oct 19, 1999 5:19 AM ET
Nova Scotia's economic development minister says he won't get involved
in a Vancouver businessman's attempt to buy Sydney Steel.
Roger Langille is a British Columbia businessman who wants to buy
Sydney Steel. He says he has $100 million in financial backing and
some top people from the industry working for him.
But Langille says neither the bank nor the province will return any of
his calls.
Gordon Balser says political interference has been a problem with
Sysco all along. And he won't contact the bank hired to sell the steel
mill.
"What we've been doing consistently is directing any contact to the
deputy minister responsible and then from him to ABN Amro, because we
don't want to have this process be contaminated by politics," said
Balser.
Langille is now backing out of his plan to put a bid in on Sysco.

Mayor Scott served 12 years as MLA for Cumberland South. During his
provincial political career, he was Speaker of the Nova Scotia

Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish all-candidates debate
Last Thursday evening at the Bear Head Room, at Port Hawkesbury's
Civic Centre, five candidates took to the podium for a debate for the
riding of Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish. From the left are: Joanna Clark

-by April MacDonald
There were five candidates that took to
the podium at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre’s Bear Head Room and
debated last Thursday evening.
The event was hosted by CBC Cape
Breton and moderated by Steve Sutherland, host of CBC Radio’s
Information Morning Cape Breton.
The debate was live-streamed on the CBC News Nova Scotia YouTube channel.
The all-candidates debate for the Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish riding featured representatives from five political parties: Allan MacMaster (Conservative), Rebecca Wall (Independent), Jaime Battiste (Liberal), Joanna Clark (NDP), and Ryan Smyth (PPC).
Candidates discussed their varying approaches to key issues affecting Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish.
Debates of this nature give voters an opportunity to learn a candidate’s stance on a variety of topics, including healthcare, education, economic development, environmental concerns, as well as local infrastructure.
Candidates responded to questions from moderator Steve Sutherland. There were no questions permitted from the audience, nor were those in attendance allowed to hold banners of support or show where their political affiliations lie.
Voters were there to gauge each candidate’s positions, as well as to get a sense of each of their personalities.
What kept coming up, time and time again, was the trade war with the United States, especially the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.
While local issues were also discussed, candidates and voters were focused on who would be best suited to face the U.S. president.
Although there were five candidates on stage, the sparring and the tone made it clear that the race will likely boil down to the Liberal candidate, Jaime Battiste, and Conservative candidate, Allan MacMaster.
Key points discussed during the debate were:
Economic recovery and job creation: Candidates discussed the importance of economic recovery post-pandemic, emphasizing job creation in key sectors such as tourism, fisheries, and natural resources. Allan MacMaster focused on fiscal responsibility and supporting small businesses. Jaime Battiste highlighted investments in infrastructure and technology.
Access to healthcare was a significant topic, with candidates debating how to alleviate pressures on the healthcare system.
Joanna Clark called for increased funding for public healthcare and mental health services, while Ryan Smyth argued for a more market-driven approach to healthcare.
With regards to education, candidates spoke to funding and curriculum improvements.
Rebecca Wall emphasized the need for better support for students with disabilities. Jaime Battiste spoke about addressing teacher shortages and curriculum modernization.
Jaime Battiste asked MacMaster five times whether or not he believed in climate change, pointing out that the Conservative Leader, Pierre Pollieve, did not in fact believe in climate change. Eventually, MacMaster replied that “climate does change.”
With regards to climate change and environmental policies, candidates discussed on how to ensure sustainable development in the region, with Joanna Clark pushing for robust climate action plans. Ryan Smyth somewhat acknowledged climate concerns but showed much skepticism regarding any government intervention.
Local issues discussed were infrastructure needs, increasing services for rural areas, and supporting our Indigenous communities through reconciliation.
Candidates continued to remind the audience of their commitment to engaging with and listening to their constituents.
Candidate Platforms
Allan MacMaster (Conservative):
– Advocated for fiscal responsibility, small business support, and economic development.
– Promised to lower taxes and reduce government spending.
Rebecca Wall (Independent):
– Focused on grassroots issues, community engagement, and independent decision-making.
– Prioritized inclusive policies and support for marginalized communities.
Jaime Battiste (Liberal):
– Emphasized progressive social policies, healthcare funding, and local infrastructure investment.
– Championed diversity and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.
Joanna Clark (NDP):
– Committed to social justice, environmental sustainability, and equitable access to services.
– Advocated for universal healthcare, pharmacare, childcare, and affordable housing.
Ryan Smyth (PPC):
– Promoted individual freedoms, reducing government size, and a more market-oriented approach to various sectors.
– Critiqued current government policies on taxation and regulation.
Smyth received a roomful of booing and angered most of the people in attendance when he seemed to support Trump’s assertion that Canada would be better off as a 51st State.
Interactions between candidates, including challenges and rebuttals, were signs indicative of their readiness to engage in political discourse and handle criticism.
These debates are crucial as they provide voters with the opportunity to hear directly from candidates about their policies, views, and plans if elected.
Although there are many local issues facing the area, candidates said that what they are hearing door-to-door is the lack of affordability, the rising cost of food, and of course, the fear of the Trump administration and the threat of tariffs.
Candidates said, especially the Liberal and NDP, that the voters are very concerned with Canada’s broken relationship with the United States.
Battiste said, time and time again, that what he is hearing from voters is that this election will ultimately come down to Liberal Leader Mark Carney or Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, and who is the best leader to take on Trump.
Those who plan to vote for Prime Minister Mark Carney said they are doing so to keep Poilievre out, as he appears to align himself more with Trump than any other of the federal leaders.
Joanna Clark voiced concern that this campaign is being overshadowed by the fact that many voters still see the race as only two parties, stressing that this should not be the case.
Other highlights were:
– Economic development: Proposals to boost local economies, support small businesses, and attract investment to the region.
– Healthcare: Plans to improve healthcare services, including access to hospitals and healthcare professionals, mental health resources, and community health initiatives.
– Education: Policies aimed at improving educational opportunities, funding for schools, and vocational training programs for youth.
– Natural resources and environment: Stances on sustainable resource management, conservation efforts, and response to climate change, often significant issues for communities in Cape Breton.
– Social services: Efforts to enhance social programs, support for families, affordable housing, and initiatives to address poverty and inequality.
– Transportation: Infrastructure improvements, public transit options, and road maintenance are often key concerns in rural areas.
– Indigenous rights: Engagement with Indigenous communities and commitments to reconciliation efforts.
Allan MacMaster is a member of the Conservative Party. He represents the riding of Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish. MacMaster was first elected to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 2011 and has since been involved in various legislative activities and initiatives. He is known for advocating for economic development and resource management.
Jaime Battiste is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. He represents the riding of Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish. Battiste made history by becoming the first Indigenous person elected to the House of Commons from Nova Scotia when he won his seat in the 2019 federal election. He has a background in law and has been involved in various community and advocacy efforts.
Ryan Smyth is a supporter of the People’s Party of Canada. He stands for the core values of freedom and personal responsibility, as well as less government control. Smyth believes that Canada can restore its prosperity through empowering people. The People’s Party of Canada is known for its emphasis on individual freedoms and limited government intervention, and they seek to attract voters who prioritize these principles.
Joanna Clark is an advocate for youth, social justice, and rural communities.
She got her start by organizing as a student. She became involved in her students’ union and later as a member of the provincial executive for the Canadian Federation of Students. She speaks to being a young mom in a rural community who has developed a passion for issues that young people and students are currently facing in the community
Over the past five years she has been involved in advocating for accessible and equitable post-secondary education, affordable childcare, and improvements on sexual violence prevention.
Rebecca Wall stated that there are currently 343 ridings and a record-breaking 311 independents. This unprecedented number presents a unique opportunity for Canadians to shift the political landscape. “If voters choose, we could see a majority of independents working together in Parliament.”
Here’s why she believes this matters:
– If just 12 independents are elected, they have the power to form a parliamentary caucus. This means they can collaborate and strategize on important issues, even without being part of a registered party.
– Independents can unite around shared goals, meeting regularly to develop policy positions and coordinate their efforts, amplifying their political influence.
– A caucus not only enhances visibility but also grants members access to resources, speaking opportunities, and media attention.
“Together, independents can drive meaningful change, propose legislation, and influence important debates. Let’s make our voices heard and explore the possibilities of an independent-led Parliament!”
Voters are encouraged to consider the candidates’ platforms and their responses to local concerns, as we all ready for the upcoming election.

Cape Breton-Canso-Antigonish Independent Candidate Rebecca Wall says her non-affiliated status Would be an Asset for Voters if Elected
Independent Rebecca Wall is looking to make some noise in the upcoming federal election.
The Cape Breton resident who attended school in Baddeck, works as a media consultant in the new Cape Breton Canso Antigonish riding. Wall said during her time travelling the riding she was drawn to the locals who built a life with next to nothing and started to realize marginalized voices were not being represented well in parliament. With 11 Nova Scotia Parliament seats and only two in Cape Breton, Wall said it doesn’t give local residents a full voice in Ottawa.

An elector casts his ballot. (Elections Canada photo)
Wall said running as an independent offers a chance to make some noise.
Audio PlayerWall said she wants to encourage youth, encourage collaboration, and bring the voices of women forward in leadership. She invites everyone to vote strategically and without fear, adding if she were to win, she will be a voice for all people and be there to listen.

Sydney-Glace Bay Federal Debate | Rogers tv
Chris Gallant
Sydney–Glace Bay
A proud Cape Bretoner, Chris Gallant grew up in New Victoria, just outside New Waterford, near Low Point Lighthouse. As the son of a coal miner, he learned early on the values of hard work, resilience, and the importance of supporting one another—values that have shaped his career and commitment to public service.
For over 16 years, Chris has been a dedicated educator at Allison Bernard Memorial High School in Eskasoni, where he has helped guide and inspire the next generation. He has been privileged to have learned as much from them as they have from him. In addition to his work in the classroom, he has been a strong advocate for workers' rights, serving as treasurer, shop steward, and a member of the collective bargaining team in his union.
Chris is a published author of two books, demonstrating his passion for writing. His dedication to community service extends beyond education and writing—he is an active member of his church, serving as a lector and parish council member, and he is a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion, honoring the service and sacrifice of Canada’s veterans.
Like many in Cape Breton, Chris understands the challenges of rising costs, economic uncertainty, and the difficult choices families must make every day. He has seen friends and family leave in search of opportunity and knows firsthand the struggles of those trying to make ends meet at home. But he also believes in the strength and resilience of Cape Bretoners—their ability to come together, support one another, and build a better future.
Chris is running for office because he believes Cape Bretoners deserve a future where all can find success. He is ready to listen, to act, and to work hard for a Cape Breton where everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

The PPC claims to fight for freedom... but calls for a draft?
If you truly stand for freedom, you'd never force people to fight a war they don’t support. That’s not defense, that’s slavery to the state.
Libertarians let YOU:
✅ Keep what you earn.
✅ Defend your family without permission.
✅ Live free from forced servitude.
The Others:
❌ Fear those who think for themselves.
❌ Fear those who refuse to be controlled.
❌ Fear Libertarians.
Because we let YOU choose.

Mark Carney to run for seat in Ottawa's Nepean riding
Previously held by Liberal MP Chandra Arya, it borders riding where Poilievre is seeking re-election

Prime Minister Mark Carney will run in the Ottawa riding of Nepean in the next federal election, according to the Liberal Party.
"Ottawa is where Mark Carney raised his family, devoted his career to public service and always gave back to his community," the party posted on the social media platform X Saturday night.
Carney added that he's "honoured" to be running in Nepean.
"This next election will be one of the most consequential in our lifetimes. Let's get to work," Carney posted on X.
The riding has been held by Liberal MP Chandra Arya since 2015, but the 62-year-old learned Thursday that the party had removed him as their candidate.
Arya had already been nominated to run again. He had previously run against Carney in the Liberal leadership race, where he dismissed the importance of knowing French and later had his nomination revoked.
WATCH | How constituents reacted to Arya's removal:
Residents in the riding of Nepean react to Chandra Arya not being allowed to run as a Liberal
The longtime MP had his nomination revoked by the Liberal Party. He’s been MP of the area since 2015.
Carney has never held elected office. He became prime minister shortly after winning the Liberal leadership earlier this month.
The riding where he will seek to become an MP borders the riding of Carleton, where Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is running for an eighth term as an MP.
Liberals revoke Chandra Arya's nomination, after removing him from leadership race
Sources have confirmed to CBC News that election day will be on April 28.
Carney is expected to ask the Governor General on Sunday to dissolve Parliament, marking the beginning of a federal election campaign.
But for many, the campaign already seems to be underway, with all parties holding events across Canada. Carney also paired up with comedian Mike Myers in a new video posted on Saturday.
A Liberal source said Carney's team approached the provincial Liberals in Nepean on Friday, after Arya's Thursday evening post that the party had revoked his nomination.
The source said Carney's team asked the provincial Liberals what kind of help they could provide in the leader's campaign. The source expected, at the very least, provincial volunteers to go door to door for the federal campaign.
The source said they expect Carney to have a campaign launch event in Nepean sometime next week.

Dartmouth-Cole Harbour

After his retirement from the military in 2006, Joseph and his
family decided on settling in Cole Harbour to begin their post-military
life. Adding on previous stays when he was younger, Joe has spent about
half of his 60+ years in Dartmouth-Cole Harbour. He has seen many
changes.
Joe contributed over 23 years in military service before
retiring as the Senior Biomedical Electronics Tech. He spent a further
15 years as a Public Servant in the same field maintaining medical
equipment throughout the Atlantic provinces.
Over the years, Joe
has volunteered with minor league baseball, the Friends of McNabs Island
Society, and Chess Nova Scotia. Nowadays, he is busy catching up on
home renovations and spending time with his active grandchildren.
By
standing up to run in the 2025 federal election, Joe is fulfilling a
personal desire to offer a reasonable and sensible choice in probably
the most important election in recent times. In tune with the mission of
the Libertarian Party of Canada to reduce the responsibilities and
expense of government, Joe will commit to low taxes and less government
for the betterment of his constituents and all Canadians.

N.S. NDP leader’s statement on fifth anniversary of N.S. mass shooting
Remembering April 18-19, 2020: a statement from Premier Houston
The Liberals and NDP have been sick, cruel, selfish and disgusting for years So why have you ignored my concerns for so long?
Thursday 1 August 2024
Conservative MP Karen Vecchio won't run again in next election
Liberal MP says she regrets 'distress' caused to witnesses who left meeting in tears
MPs accused each other of politicizing the issue of domestic violence during tense meeting
Liberal MP Anita Vandenbeld fell short of an apology Thursday after instigating a fracas Wednesday that led two witnesses testifying about violence against women to storm out of a parliamentary committee hearing.
Vandenbeld said only that she deeply regrets the "distress that this meeting caused the witnesses."
The statement came after a domestic violence survivor demanded an apology from the MP for what she described as "abusive" behaviour.
"It's not an apology — it's a statement," said Megan Walker, a witness who appeared before the committee.
"She has caused an entire community of women and girls who have faced abuse and are following this some distress, and that's not acknowledged here."
The rare summer meeting was scheduled to allow MPs to hear from advocates for domestic violence victims and a deputy chief of the Peel Region Police in light of several high-profile cases this summer.
It began with detailed testimony from Walker, an advocate for ending violence against women, and Cait Alexander, who shared with MPs graphic photos of abuse she suffered.
When given the floor, Vandenbeld accused Conservatives of playing politics with the trauma of survivors, putting together the agenda in haste and limiting the ability of other MPs to suggest witnesses.
She insisted that she cares about survivors' stories and outlined some of the actions the federal government has taken to address violence against women.

Singh is asked about NDP’s role in committee hearing that left witnesses upset
But rather than pivoting back to the topic of violence against women after airing that complaint, Vandenbeld called for a debate on a motion related to abortion rights — an issue the Liberals have tried to pin the Conservatives down on for months.
The witnesses shouted their frustration at Vandenbeld and others who voted for the motion, but they were effectively ignored for the rest of the meeting as MPs debated speaking orders, the Conservatives' stance on abortion and the narrow scope of those called to testify.
Both witnesses eventually left the meeting in a visible state of distress.

I am extremely disappointed about the removal of Karen Vecchio as chair of the Status of Women committee by Pierre Poilievre. He wants you to believe that Parliament is broken. The Status of Women Committee is proof that this is not true.
We worked collaboratively and made space for the voices of women and girls to be heard. Karen Vecchio worked too effectively and fairly, so she was removed.
We need to strengthen Parliament and make it work better for Canadians, not sabotage it to prove it doesn’t work. Our democracy is too precious to let this happen.
Watch my remarks in the Status of Women committee about how we can work to prevent this kind of undermining of MPs’ and committees’ independence and autonomy in the future. From: Vandenbeld, Anita - M.P. <Anita.Vandenbeld@parl.gc.ca>

The health and safety of Nickel Belt - Greater Sudbury residents and constituency staff is paramount. To ensure this is put into practice constituents seeking assistance related to Federal programs or agencies can access help via email and in person by appointment only. This level of service is due to an influx of vulgar and aggressive behaviour. Staff will be monitoring emails and your inquiry will be addressed during regular office hours.
Pandemic fatigue is impacting all Canadians, I appreciate and empathize with everyone, we all are desperate to return to a sense of normalcy. We have overcome many challenges together over the course of this pandemic. Nickel Belt – Greater Sudbury residents, healthcare workers and all those on the frontlines have stepped up by getting vaccinated, continuing to follow public health measures and have helped those in need. Thank you to each of you.
In light of exceptional circumstances, high volume of contact in various formats, and staff shortages, only emails requesting assistance associated with Federal Government programs and agencies will be responded to. All emails received from constituents wishing to share their concerns will absolutely be brought to my attention in order to ensure your views and concerns are received.
Constituency office staff are tasked with initiating inquiries related to the federal Government to the best of their ability with the resources available. They are public servants who are working in a non-partisan capacity. They are not expected however to subject themselves to vulgar or aggressive behaviour.Individuals who insist on sharing views in a threatening, harassing, vulgar or aggressive in nature will not be tolerated. If necessary, this information will be shared with the authorities.
I know our region will continue to show resilience as we move to a balanced plan and forward to next steps into pandemic recovery. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we strive to provide a safe work environment for staff and constituents. I will continue to advance your voices and priorities in Ottawa in order to deliver more solutions.

Freeland defends arrests of protesters, says Canada's democracy and
economy are under threat

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland defended her government's
decision to invoke the emergency powers now being used to clear
downtown Ottawa, saying Canada's economy and democracy are being
threatened.
"A liberal democracy must be prepared to defend itself," she told a
news conference Friday as police continued to take into custody
protesters demanding the elimination of all pandemic measures who have
gridlocked the capital city for nearly three weeks.
The federal government triggered the Emergencies Act earlier this week
for the first time in the legislation's history. It brought in new
measures prohibiting public assemblies that disrupt the movement of
people, goods and trade, or that support the "threat or use of acts of
serious violence against persons or property."
In a dramatic show of force, a line of police officers — some armed
with weapons, face shields and gas masks — has been moving along
Rideau Street, pushing protesters west and making arrests along the
way.
Police started arresting protesters and towing trucks on Friday as
part of an operation to end a three-week blockade of Ottawa by
hundreds of truck drivers that paralyzed the nation's capital and
prompted the prime minister to invoke emergency powers. (Evan

As of 3:53 p.m. ET, police had taken 70 people into custody and towed
21 vehicles.
At one point, officers smashed the window of an orange vehicle and
arrested the occupant after he locked himself in.
Armoured tactical vehicles were spotted moving up Rideau — a major
downtown artery — with a group of mounted officers nearby.
"When this crisis is over, all of us will need to work hard to heal
our country," Freeland told the news conference.
"But today, our economy and our democracy are facing a serious and
foreign-funded threat. These illegal blockades and occupation cannot
be allowed to usurp the authority of democratically elected
governments."
Some of the protesters on the streets linked arms and sang the
national anthem. Others sat down or kneeled on the ground, refusing to
move.
"Hold the line," some chanted.

Police arrest protesters in operation to end 3-week Ottawa occupation
Analysis
It's no sledgehammer — but for Trudeau, the Emergencies Act could
turn out to be just as heavy
On Wellington Street, home of the National War Memorial and Parliament
Hill, protesters used shovels and orange and white pylons to build up
a wall of snow.
"You will face severe penalties if you do not cease further unlawful
activity and remove your vehicle and/or property immediately from all
unlawful protest sites," Ottawa police tweeted Friday morning.
Freeland said she takes no satisfaction in seeing the arrests.
"For me this is a day of real sorrow, but also determination," she said.
"And it is a day, I think, where everyone in our government is very resolute."

Freeland: 'It's painful for me that this is happening in Canada'

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland says the protests now being
cleared from Ottawa's streets are attempting to undermine Canada's
democracy and economy. 1:36
The government published its reasons for triggering the Emergencies
Act late Wednesday, calling the situation across the country
"concerning, volatile and unpredictable."
"The protesters have varying ideological grievances, with demands
ranging from an end to all public health restrictions to the overthrow
of the elected government," the government statement reads.
"Ideologically motivated violent extremism adherents may feel
empowered by the level of disorder resulting from the protests."
The statement also said border blockades threaten Canada's economic security.
"The impact on important trade corridors and the risk to the
reputation of Canada as a stable, predictable and reliable location
for investment may be jeopardized if disruptions continue," it reads.
For six days last week, protesters blocked access to the Ambassador
Bridge which connects Windsor and Detroit. The vital trade link was
reopened to traffic on Sunday after police moved in.
On Friday, an Ontario judge granted an extension to the injunction
that prohibits anyone from blocking access to the Ambassador Bridge.
The previous order was set to expire Monday.
Debate delayed
A debate in the House of Commons on the government's controversial
decision to invoke the Emergencies Act has been temporarily suspended
as the police operation continues on the parliamentary precinct's
doorstep.
House leaders previously reached a deal to debate the use of the
Emergencies Act on Friday and throughout the weekend, from 7 a.m. ET
to midnight, with a vote planned for Monday.
The extraordinary powers provided by the legislation have been in
effect since Monday, but the Emergencies Act stipulates that the
federal government also must go before Parliament to seek approval
from MPs and senators.
Government House Leader Mark Holland tweeted that he hopes the debate
can resume Saturday.
"We are closely monitoring the police operation in downtown Ottawa
today and will await further advice from security officials on
Parliament Hill on when the House can reopen," he wrote.

Protesters have shut down border crossings and paralyzed downtown
Ottawa over the past three weeks. Here's how they got there and how it
might end. 3:10
A note sent to senators on Friday morning asks them to stay away from
the downtown core.
The Conservatives have argued the government has not backed up its
claim that the demonstrations pose a serious threat to Canada and
can't be dealt with through existing laws.
"We want to lower the temperature across the country. The prime
minister clearly wants to raise it," interim Conservative leader
Candice Bergen said in the House Thursday.
"This is not a game. It comes at the cost to Canadians' rights and freedoms."
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) announced Thursday
that it plans to sue the federal government over its decision to
invoke the Emergencies Act.
"Emergency powers cannot and must not be normalized," said CCLA
executive director Noa Mendelsohn.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said his party plans to support the
Emergencies Act declaration — which would carry it through the
minority Parliament — but is ready to pull its support if the measures
are no longer necessary or if the government takes on additional
powers.
"This is not a protest. It is not peaceful," Singh said during
Thursday's debate.
"The organizers of this illegal occupation have been clear from the
beginning. They came here to overthrow a democratically elected
government."
Downtown Ottawa locked down
Interim Ottawa police chief Steve Bell said the Emergencies Act and
the provincial state of emergency provided police with the resources
they needed to push back and end the demonstration.
"The three levels of government that have come together to support our
efforts in this have led us to be able to have the success we're
starting to see right now," he said Friday.
"Without the authorities provided to us through these pieces of
legislation, we wouldn't be able to be doing the work we are today."
Ottawa's downtown core remains locked down Friday morning, with about
100 checkpoints preventing protesters from entering the zone.
They act also prohibit people from bringing minors near unlawful
assemblies and authorize banks and insurance companies to freeze
participants' accounts and cancel their vehicle insurance.
On Friday, police escorted at least one tearful family with
school-aged children away from the scene.
Canadian Civil Liberties Association to sue federal government
over Emergencies Act
Truckers say they'll face arrests peacefully — but will defend their rights
On Thursday, police arrested Chris Barber and Tamara Lich, key
organizers of the protest convoy that began as a demonstration against
vaccine mandates and other pandemic restrictions.
Both are expected to make court appearances on Friday.
According to police, Barber is charged with counselling to commit the
offence of mischief, counselling to commit the offence of disobeying a
court order and counselling to commit the offence of obstructing
police.
Lich has been charged with counselling to commit the offence of
mischief, police said.
CBC News has confirmed another of the convoy leaders, Pat King, was
among those arrested Friday.
