Libertarian candidate in Battle River-Crowfoot also calls out Poilievre
Michael Harris, the Libertarian Party candidate in the upcoming federal byelection for Battle River-Crowfoot, is calling out Pierre Poilievre in a new statement.
Harris is up against 178 candidates (as of 3 p.m., July 22), most of whom fall under the Longest Ballot Committee protest movement.
In an emailed statement, Harris says Poilievre, the leader of the Conservative Party who lost his seat in the Ottawa area riding of Carleton in April, isn’t really running to be an MP for the riding.
“He’s running to be Prime Minister. Battle River–Crowfoot is just a stepping stone for his national ambitions. That leaves our communities from Acme to Stettler without real representation,” Harris says.
“We deserve an MP who lives here, knows the issues, and will fight for us every day, not someone who treats this riding like a safe fallback or political insurance. If Poilievre truly respects the people here, he’d fight for the policies that’d actually help the people of the riding. If not, he should run in his own backyard, not ours.”
Harris’s campaign, he says, is about putting liberty and ‘Alberta First’ back on the ballot.
He believes Conservatives have also ignored the real concerns of rural Albertans for decades.
“The CPC refuses to touch policies like centralized agriculture, equalization payments, or self-determination. I’m the only candidate in this race calling for a full end to equalization and supply management, which keeps milk and poultry prices artificially high and locks young farmers out of the market,” adds Harris.
“That’s a conversation Poilievre won’t have, because his party still prioritizes Quebec over affordability.”

Email/Courriel: premier@gnb.ca/premier.Alberta byelection candidates reported 'potentially threatening' comments: RCMP
Independent candidate Sarah Spanier says she's been target of harassment, personal attacks
Several candidates contesting next month's byelection in Battle River-Crowfoot have reported receiving negative and sometimes "potentially threatening commentary" on social media platforms in recent days, according to RCMP.
"While Canadians are entitled to express their opinions, even those critical of political figures, threats or comments that cross the line into criminal conduct will be taken seriously," RCMP wrote in a statement.
Independent candidate Sarah Spanier is one of more than 150 candidates contesting the riding alongside Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre, who is running in the riding to regain a seat in the House of Commons.
But Spanier said she's put a pause on knocking on doors for the time being, citing a barrage of hostile comments she's received over the course of her campaign.
"I had people who were telling me that I'm going to regret it, and my family's going to regret it," Spanier said. "Then it slowly started to escalate into, 'If you come here, you're going to regret it.'"
Battle River-Crowfoot independent candidate Sarah Spanier said she paused door-to-door campaigning because of safety concerns. (Submitted by Sarah Spanier)
The rhetoric got "even more aggressive," in Spanier's view, after she started to speak about her support of transgender people.
"The comments I received were just vile, and not exactly something that you can say on TV or radio," she said.
Spanier shared screenshots with CBC News of various social media comments. One user posted that "[Spanier is] an ignorant pig and I pray [she gets] destroyed," while another wrote "come to my door they will regret it."
Another charged Spanier with attempting to "sabotage" Poilievre.
Of the more than 150 candidates running against Poilievre, most are electoral reform advocates known as the Longest Ballot Committee.
Spanier is not a part of that committee. Poilievre and other candidates have pushed back against the committee, with Poilievre referring to it as the "longest ballot scam."
'The age of the keyboard warrior'
Not all candidates share Spanier's concerns.
Bonnie Critchley, another independent candidate running in the riding, released a video on TikTok responding to media reports about threats in the riding.
"It's honestly just not a thing.... Are people saying mean things about me online? Well, yeah, it is the age of the keyboard warrior," Critchley said. "But there's been no death threats."
Spanier took issue with the video.
"[Critchley] put forth a video basically saying without saying that I am being overdramatic about this," Spanier said.
"This isn't something new that I've just started talking about. This has been on my radar for months now."
Battle River-Crowfoot independent candidate Bonnie Critchley says people living in her riding aren't making death threats. (Bonnie Critchley/TikTok)
In a statement to CBC News, Critchley's campaign wrote that "online comments are not the same as threats."
"Democracy includes disagreement. We welcome respectful discussion, that's how real progress happens," the statement reads.
Spanier said she believes this issue is taking place across the country as part of every election.
"Just because it's not happening for you doesn't mean it's not happening," she said. "I just hope people take this seriously."
Other candidates react
In its Monday statement, the RCMP added threatening comments made online can be offences under the Criminal Code, which prohibits uttering threats to cause bodily harm, death or damage to property.
"Individuals found making such threats may be subject to investigation and could face criminal charges," the statement reads.

Michael Harris, a Libertarian candidate in the same race, told CBC News he hasn't received direct threats himself.
"I've had a few Longest Ballot Committee candidates spam my DMs on social media after my statement on them went live," he wrote in an email.
"Still, I don't really mind. I believe in freedom of speech. Even if it's annoying. As long as it doesn't cross the line into harassment or threats, people have the right to voice their opinions."
Jayson Cowan, a candidate in Battle River-Crowfoot affiliated with the Longest Ballot Committee, said he had received some aggressive blowback on social media platforms during the campaign, specifically on X.
"I could understand why to some that would be very scary. But I am not easily scared. I'm welcoming every single debate, every single interaction," he said.
Still, he said some forms of blowback, such as sharing people's personal address online, steps over the line.
Darcy Spady, the Liberal candidate in the byelection, wrote in a post on Facebook that it was wrong that Spanier had to put door-knocking on pause after receiving threats.
"No one should ever feel unsafe participating in our democracy. I applaud Sarah for putting her name forward to serve, and I hope we can send a clear message: threats and violence have no place here in Battle River-Crowfoot," Spady wrote.
A spokesperson for Poilievre didn't respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. The byelection is scheduled for Aug. 18.
Poilievre wants law to stop 'longest ballot scam' introduced this fall
More than 150 candidates signed up for Alberta byelection next month
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is calling on the Liberal government to introduce changes to Canada's election rules that would curb long ballot protests.
Poilievre wrote a letter to government House leader Steven MacKinnon on Tuesday saying legislation should be brought before the House of Commons when MPs return to Ottawa in September.
"This is not democracy in action. It is a deliberate attempt to manipulate the rules, confuse voters and undermine confidence in our elections," Poilievre wrote of the protests in his letter.
A group of electoral reform advocates known as the Longest Ballot Committee is currently signing up more than 100 candidates to run in next month's byelection in Battle River-Crowfoot, where Poilievre is seeking to regain a seat in the House. As of Tuesday, 152 candidates had registered to run in the Alberta riding.
Poilievre lost his longtime Ottawa-area riding of Carleton in April's general election, where there were 91 candidates running, most of whom were also associated with the Longest Ballot Committee.
Poilievre posted his letter to MacKinnon on social media, referring to the protests as the "longest ballot scam."
Although Poilievre only mentioned Battle River-Crowfoot and Carleton in his letter, the advocates have organized a number of long ballots in recent years — including in Liberal strongholds such as Toronto-St. Paul's and LaSalle-Émard-Verdun in 2024.
Those elections have seen metre-long ballots that have resulted in delayed vote counts and have confounded some voters.
Chief
Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault holds up a sample ballot from a
byelection that featured 91 candidates during a House of Commons
committee meeting on Nov. 21, 2024. (Parliament of Canada)
The committee's organizers want to put a citizens' assembly in charge of electoral reform and say political parties are too reluctant to make government more representative of the electorate.
In his letter, Poilievre says the government should change the number of signatures a candidate is required to have on a nomination form — from the current 100 to 0.5 per cent of a riding's population. He also said electors should only be allowed to sign one nomination form and that official agents should only represent one candidate.
The Longest Ballot Committee has electors sign multiple nomination forms and uses the same official agent to represent all their candidates.
In an email to CBC News, the organizers rebuked Poilievre's suggestions.
"When it comes to election law, politicians just have too much skin in the game to be calling the shots. There is a clear and inappropriate conflict of interest," the statement said.
Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault has called for some changes he said would help prevent long ballots.
Speaking in front of a House committee last fall, Perrault argued that "certain penalties" should be imposed on individuals who sign — or encourage others to sign — multiple nomination papers in an effort to get as many candidates on a ballot as possible, though he didn't say what those penalties should be.
Other Battle River-Crowfoot candidates have criticized the Long Ballot Committee for getting involved in the byelection.
Bonnie Critchley — who is running as an Independent and pitching herself as an alternative to the Conservative leader, who she argues pushed Kurek out — said she's facing a "backlash" from voters who are worried that she is a "fake out" candidate.
"I don't have a massive team, I don't have backing from millions of people. I have to go door to door within my community and explain to my neighbours that I have nothing to do with you," she wrote on her campaign website.
Michael Harris, who is running for the Libertarian Party, called the protest a "mockery of the democratic process" that "actively hurts serious Independent and third-party candidates."
Long ballot candidate pushes back
Jayson Cowan, a Battle River-Crowfoot candidate affiliated with the Longest Ballot Committee, said the initiative isn't a gimmick.
"It's not even completely a protest because everybody has their own reasons [for being on the ballot]," Cowan told CBC News.
Cowan said election rules — specifically the requirement that a candidate have 100 signatures on their nomination form — favour organized political parties.
An example of a ballot for the riding of Carleton. (Justin Tang/The Canadian Press)
A member of the Métis Nation of Alberta, Cowan previously tried to run as an Independent. But he said he struggled to gather enough signatures, in part due to mobility issues. He credits the Longest Ballot Committee for helping get his name on the ballot for the first time.
"This is no protest for me. It's the real deal. And they're just offering a beautiful, fantastic democratic service," he said.
Cowan said he wants to see more Indigenous representation and more politicians from the disabled community. Although he doesn't live in the riding, he is pitching himself as a better option than Poilievre.
"Who wants an Ottawa politician [in Battle River-Crowfoot]?" Cowan said. "He just wants a free ride now.… If they vote me in, I will serve."

Alberta-born and BC-raised, Grant is a lawyer, author, humanitarian, small-holding organic farmer, and family man who believes that Canada has lost its moorings from the value system that built this nation.
He believes Canada is being undermined by post-nationalism and the Liberal “reset” agenda. Before these serious challenges facing Canada became impossible to ignore, Grant had a very diverse career leading in International Development across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe by combining tools from the humanitarian and social impact investment sector. Over the last twenty years, he has worked in some of the most risk-laden countries and understands how people, families and communities flourish when they are given the tools and opportunities to succeed. He holds degrees in Business, Law and Humanities. Grant is married to Caroline, his wife of 30 years, and they have four sons.
While Grant is not a career politician, he is a reformer and entered into the race for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada in 2022. Having raised the necessary $300,000.00 and attained the nomination requirements from across the country, his bid to participate was blocked by the party officials. He believes that the Conservative Party is failing to engage the real issues, causing Canada to be deconstructed. By omission to challenge these threats to Canada, the Conservative Party is camouflaging the real issues and totally failing Canadians. Grant has the tenacity to see truth, justice, civility, respect and uprightness restored to our nation. He yearns to see the promises of Canada re-established for all Canadians.
Grant adamantly believes Canada will never be governed by the United Nations, the World Health Organization or the World Economic Forum. Along with a group of patriotic citizens from across the country, he launched the United Party of Canada to provide a response to this deconstructive threat and return Canada to the founding principles that will restore truth, justice and freedom to our people and the nation of Canada.
The Canada we love will be re-established. Free. Prosperous. Great.
Alberta separatists slam Poilievre for declaring himself a 'Canadian patriot' opposed to secession
OTTAWA — Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was slammed by several separatist opponents in Alberta Monday after he said that the province should stay part of Canada, no matter what.
“Pierre Poilievre and the federal Conservatives want Albertan votes but not Albertan autonomy. Saying Alberta should stay no matter what shows exactly how little respect they have for the province’s right to chart its own path,” said Michael Harris, the Libertarian candidate challenging Poilievre in next month’s Battle River—Crowfoot byelection.
“That’s not unity, that’s control,” Harris said.
The Calgary-born Poilievre reiterated his belief in Alberta federalism at a press conference in Ottawa on Monday.
“Well, I disagree with separation. I’m a Canadian patriot (and) there’s no other country in the world where someone of my modest origins would be able to make it,” said Poilievre.
Poilievre was responding after he took part in a CBC interview on the weekend and said Alberta should stay in Canada even if the Liberals continue to hold power in Ottawa.
Grant Abraham is another candidate challenging Poilievre in August’s byelection. The leader of the United Party of Canada, which advocates for provinces standing up against federal power, Abraham said Poilievre is likely underestimating the level of unrest in Alberta.
“I mean so much of Alberta is so fed up with paying money to Quebec and Ontario in the form of equalization payments … Alberta hasn’t seen any money back from that since the 1960s,” said Abraham.
Harris and Abraham both think there should be a referendum on Alberta independence next year. Abraham says he’d vote “yes” if a referendum on the province’s independence were held tomorrow, if only to wake Ottawa up to the reality of western unrest.
Republican Party of Alberta Leader Cameron Davies, who ran provincially last month in an overlapping riding, said he thinks Poilievre will face a rude awakening himself at the doors of Battle River—Crowfoot as he campaigns for the seat recently vacated by Conservative MP Damien Kurek.
“I can tell you in the part of the riding that overlaps with Mr. Poilievre’s newfound home … that there is 30 per cent plus support, if not greater, for Alberta independence,” said Davies.
Jeff Rath, a lawyer with the pro-independence Alberta Prosperity Project, said that Poilievre’s comments about Alberta staying in Canada show just how “irrelevant” he’s become to both the country and the province.
“He just can’t read the room,” said Rath.
Rath said Poilievre hurt his credibility with Albertans by not taking the opportunity to say that he would abide by the results of a referendum on independence, as Premier Danielle Smith has repeatedly said she would.
He added that Poilievre’s continued support for the federal equalization program and supply management will be a “tough sell” with voters in the riding.
Poilievre also rankled some conservative Albertans during the CBC interview with his defence of supply management for egg and dairy farmers, which has become a trade irritant with the U.S. Trump administration, saying it pales in comparison to the “tens if not hundreds of billions” American farmers get in subsidies.
“Poilievre is saying that we’re going to continue to stick our thumb in the eye of our biggest trade partner to protect the Quebec dairy cartel … he’s not protecting the interests of Albertans,” said Rath.
Kurek told the National Post that, despite what naysayers are claiming, residents he’s spoken to increasingly see Poilievre as the right man to go to bat for rural Alberta in Ottawa.
“Having spent the last weeks … speaking to thousands of folks here in Battle River—Crowfoot, the message is clear. Albertans are frustrated with the Liberal status quo, but are hopeful that Pierre and our Conservative team are listening and will stand up for them … It’s clear to me Albertans want Pierre to fight for them!” wrote Kurek in an email to the National Post
Brad Wohlgemuth, a resident of Stettler, Alta., who plans to vote in the byelection, says he’s been disappointed by how carefully managed Poilievre’s campaign events have been so far.
Wohlgemuth said that he and other attendees of a Conservative town hall on Friday were asked to submit written questions in advance, and were not given an opportunity to ask questions from the floor.
“We want to test somebody out to see whether they can handle the tough questions,” said Wohlgemuth.
Wohlgemuth says he was especially disappointed by Poilievre’s boilerplate response to a question about secession.
“(The exchange) was so well scripted that it really didn’t address the issue.”
Poilievre said in his press conference on Monday that he understood why Albertans were so upset.
“We have to put a final end to this notion that Ottawa tells Alberta to pay up and shut up,” said Poilievre.

Petition to the House of Commons in Parliament assembled
- The Canada Elections Act permits unlimited candidate nominations per riding, with no requirement to demonstrate a genuine intent to serve if elected;
- Coordinated mass candidacies have disrupted recent elections — with 91 candidates on the 2025 Carleton ballot, 82 candidates on the 2024 Toronto–St. Paul’s ballot and 84 candidates on the 2024 La Salle-Emar-Verdun ballot;
- Excessive ballots create accessibility barriers for voters with disabilities, potentially infringing Charter rights under Section 3 (the right to vote) and Section 15 (equality under the law); and
- The Chief Electoral Officer formally warned in a November 21, 2024 letter to the Minister of Democratic Institutions that such tactics “pose a risk to the integrity of the electoral process” and recommended legislative reform.

More than 100 candidates — most in Canadian history — to run against Poilievre in byelection
102 candidates have registered so far, beating the previous record of 91
Next month's byelection in Alberta's Battle River-Crowfoot will break the record for the most candidates on a federal ballot in Canadian history.
As of Friday, 102 candidates — mostly associated with a group of electoral reform advocates known as the Longest Ballot Committee — have registered to run for the seat.
The byelection was called after its recently re-elected MP, Damien Kurek, resigned to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run for a new seat in the House of Commons. Poilievre lost in his longtime riding of Carleton in April.
The Longest Ballot Committee has been organizing dozens of candidates to run in byelections in recent years, resulting in metre-long ballots that have caused delays in vote counting and confounded some voters.
The group wants to put a citizens' assembly in charge of electoral reform and says political parties are too reluctant to make the government more representative of the electorate.
The previous record of 91 candidates occurred twice in the past year: during a byelection in LaSalle-Emard-Verdun last September and Carleton during the general election this past spring.
The Longest Ballot Committee says it is aiming to sign up 200 candidates in Battle River-Crowfoot. The deadline to register as a candidate is July 28.
Protests draws ire of other candidates
Poilievre and other candidates who aren't associated with the Longest Ballot Committee have criticized the protest.
Poilievre said during a town hall meeting in the riding last week that he wanted election rules to be changed to prevent more long ballot protests.
""We have to take action because this is a scam. It is unfair, it is unjust and it must stop," Poilievre said.
Although Elections Canada enforces the Canada Elections Act, Parliament is responsible for making any changes.
The Longest Ballot Committee rebuked Poilievre's suggestion, arguing that it emphasized their point about politicians being in charge of election laws.
"When it comes to election law, politicians just have too much skin in the game to be calling the shots. There is a clear and inappropriate conflict of interest," the group said in a statement earlier this week.
Bonnie Critchley — who is running as an independent and pitching herself as an alternative to the Conservative leader, who she argues pushed Kurek out — has also called on the Longest Ballot Committee to back off.
In an open letter to the committee posted on her campaign website, Critchley said there is a "backlash" in the riding from voters who are worried that she is a "fake out" candidate.
"I don't have a massive team, I don't have backing from millions of people. I have to go door to door within my community and explain to my neighbours that I have nothing to do with you," she wrote.
Michael Harris, who is running for the Libertarian Party, called the protest a "mockery of the democratic process."
"This flood of joke candidates doesn't just waste voters' time. It actively hurts serious Independent and third-party candidates who are working hard to give this riding real alternatives," Harris said in a statement.
Although this is the second time the Longest Ballot Committee has organized in a riding Poilievre is running in, they have also targeted Liberal strongholds. The Conservatives flipped the riding of Toronto-St. Paul's during a byelection last summer that featured dozens of candidates associated with the long ballot protest. (The Liberals won the seat back in the general election).

The Great Canadian Gong Show Round Two
Rebel News owner Ezra Levant was 'mentor' to Poilievre, says author
Pierre Poilievre campaigned for Ezra Levant in Calgary riding nomination
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has documented historic ties to Rebel News owner Ezra Levant, the media personality at the epicentre of a controversy that has engulfed Canada's Leaders' Debates Commission.
After facing criticism for allowing right-wing media activists to dominate the post-French debate press conference, the commission cancelled Thursday's post-debate question-and-answer session citing undefined security concerns.
The commission's decision Thursday came amid tensions between Levant — a political activist behind two entities registered with Elections Canada as third-party advocacy groups — and some journalists covering the English debate on-site.
The controversy that flowed around Levant and his right-wing Rebel News online media employees partly overshadowed the central event of the evening.
The federal leaders English-debate was a pivotal moment for Poilievre who was seeking to grab the momentum and polling lead away from Liberal Leader Mark Carney as the campaign headed into its final week.

"On the most important night of the most important campaign of Poilievre's life, Ezra Levant showed up," said Mark Bourrie, author of a recently published book on Poilievre, Ripper, in an interview with CBC News.
"If things hadn't derailed, [Levant] would have probably been dominating the questions himself that night and that would have been really something, to have this come full circle after 25 years."
Levant said in a written statement to CBC News that he has not read Bourrie's book or spoken to the author, who Levant described as pushing a "political agenda."
"I haven't had any meaningful dealings with Poilievre in nearly 25 years," Levant said in the statement.
"Poilievre was a volunteer on my campaign. I myself was still in my 20s. I don't doubt he learned from that campaign but I don't know what teaching I was doing other than being the candidate and working with the team."
CBC News asked the Conservative Party if Poilievre still considered Levant a friend and if there had been any discussions or co-ordination between the two around election communications.
"No. Your insinuations are false. Conservatives are focused on our own campaign to bring home Canada's promise, lower the cost of living, axe taxes, build homes and make Canadians safe, for a change," said the statement.
Worked to get Levant elected
In his book, Bourrie writes that Poilievre became part of a "historically important clique" at the University of Calgary that "became a large part of the core of the modern Conservative movement." This group included people like former Alberta premier Jason Kenney, law professor Benjamin Perrin and journalist Levant.
Poilievre and Levant would end up working closely together, even co-authoring a Calgary Herald op-ed in 2002.

Bourrie said that Poilievre was in his early 20s when he joined a team that included Levant behind a push to have Stockwell Day lead the newly minted Canadian Alliance — a party with Western populist roots that eventually merged with the Progressive Conservative Party to become today's Conservative Party.
Day won the leadership of the new party in 2000, defeating Preston Manning, who founded the Reform Party. Day soon lost the 2000 federal election to Jean Chretien's Liberals and resigned his post in 2001.
Historian Mark Bourrie recently authored a book about Pierre Poilievre called, Ripper. (Courtesy of Mark Bourrie)
But Poilievre and Levant had their sights on another goal. Poilievre began campaigning to help Levant — then a young lawyer in his late 20s — become the Canadian Alliance candidate in the riding of Calgary Southwest, which Manning held but would soon vacate on his retirement in January 2002.
Poilievre helped purge the Calgary Southwest riding association of Manning supporters to pave the way for Levant to win the riding's nomination and become the next likely MP, wrote Bourrie.
But they wouldn't leave anything to chance.
"Poilievre was working for Ezra.... Poilievre was his media manager. Poilievre was the one putting together TV commercials, billboard ads. They spent a lot of money," said Bourrie.
One TV commercial featured Poilievre and his current campaign manager Jenni Byrne, with Stockwell Day's grandchild, posing as an Alberta family.

his bid to be a Canadian Alliance candidate in Calgary. Poilievre,

This ad, along with details of Poilievre's work for Levant in the riding nomination campaign, is also recounted by a second book, Pierre Poilievre: A political life, written by current Conservative candidate Andrew Lawton.
Despite running about 80 radio and television ads, renting billboards and spending reportedly over $100,000, Levant would never get a chance to represent the riding, even after securing the nomination in February 2002.
Stephen Harper would become Canadian Alliance leader that year, force Levant aside, and take the riding for himself in a May 2002 byelection.
Bourrie said Levant and Poilievre's paths diverged at this point — Poilievre would stay in the electoral political game while Levant would become an influential player in the right-wing media sphere.
But during this era, as a Western-based conservative movement turned into a national political force, Levant became a "mentor and somebody who opened opportunities" for Poilievre, said Bourrie.
"Poilievre got to go from basically a college politician to running a real campaign, making big decisions, spending money," he said.
"That must have helped him to really move ahead of people his age and his generation of political people. He's a staffer ... and soon after, runs and he wins. He obviously earned his spurs on that."
A quarter of a century later, Levant and Poilievre's paths again crossed in Montreal. But this time, Bourrie said it was Levant campaigning through his registered third-party advocacy entity, ForCanada, paying for a truck to flash messages attacking Carney while rolling around the debate venue.
Levant said that Rebel News "attends all leaders debates, every election, irrespective of who the leaders are." He said the media entity's questions to Poilievre "are on the record."
Longest ballot initiative runs over 100 candidates in poilievre's riding

Candidate in federal Alberta byelection stops door-knocking due to death threats
She attributes the threats and other derogatory messages she has received to her advocacy for transgender people during her campaign in the Battle River-Crowfoot riding.
An Independent candidate running in a rural Alberta byelection says she has stopped door-knocking because of death threats.
Sarah Spanier, 33, of Castor, says she has told Mounties about the online threats, which include a social media comment saying she would be met with a shotgun if she showed up at someone’s door.
She attributes the threats and other derogatory messages she has received to her advocacy for transgender people during her campaign in the Battle River-Crowfoot riding, which encompasses communities such as Camrose, Drumheller and Wainwright.
(Some) were ambiguous like, ‘If you come to my door, you don’t know what’s going to happen,'” Spanier said in an interview Thursday.
“It’s unfortunate. I’ve had supporters who have also been very quiet in supporting me because they fear for their safety and their business, which is really, really heartbreaking to hear.”
Spanier is one of almost 80 candidates running in Battle River-Crowfoot, the riding won handily by Conservative Damien Kurek in the April general election.
Kurek stepped down to allow Pierre Poilievre to run in a byelection after the party leader lost his seat in the Ottawa riding of Carleton.
Spanier, who entered the race in early May, said she now is exclusively campaigning online and at public events.
“I would like to go door-knocking. It’s just a matter of finding people who feel safe enough to come with me and who I feel will be able to protect themselves if needed,” she said.
Spanier said she is still hopeful she will win the byelection.
“Even though I’ve had people just completely tear me down, I have also had conversations with those people which have turned into signatures because they listen and they understand,” she said.
She said RCMP have recommended Spanier block the hateful online commentators and told her those who threaten are unlikely to act on it.
Spanier said she is staying vigilant as she has seen comments online from people asking for her home address.
“Being in a small town, it is very easy for somebody who doesn’t like me here to give my address out to anybody who wants it,” she said.
Voters go to the polls Aug. 18.

Meet the military trailblazer who's gunning for Pierre Poilievre in rural Alberta byelection
Bonnie Critchley says she's running as an independent because she's grown disillusioned with partisan politics
OTTAWA — Bonnie Critchley is used to defying expectations.
A trailblazer in uniform, Critchley was just 17 years old when she became the second woman ever to serve as an armoured crewman in her unit. She and dad Steve later made history as the first father–daughter gunnery crew in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps.
She’s now looking to take out Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in one of the safest Conservative ridings in Canada, running as an independent in the upcoming Battle River—Crowfoot byelection.
Critchley, who’s been traversing the rural Alberta riding for about a month, says she sees a path to an upset victory over Poilievre.
“Honestly, a good result for us would be a win,” Critchley told the National Post on Wednesday.
Conservative Damien Kurek easily won the riding in April’s election, with 82 per cent of the popular vote, announcing his intention to step aside just a few days later.
Critchley said that Poilievre is starting off on the wrong foot after supplanting the just-reelected Kurek and sticking taxpayers with a hefty byelection bill.
“I’ve been talking to a lot of ‘small-c’ conservatives around here who aren’t thrilled that the ‘big-C’ Conservatives are spending an extra two million dollars on a mulligan for a guy who failed in his duty to his constituents and was fired,” said Critchley.
Poilievre lost his Ottawa-area riding to Liberal Bruce Fanjoy by a five-point margin in April’s federal election, after holding the seat for two decades.
Critchley also says that the Calgary-born Poilievre has put off residents with early gaffes, including his clumsy attempts to appropriate western attire and accoutrements.
“Whether it’s the backwards cowboy hat at the Wainwright Stampede or sitting in a (Rolls Royce) in Drumheller, it just hasn’t landed,” said Critchley.
A 22-year army reservist who later rode her bike across Europe to raise money for veterans and first responders, Critchley has a CV that would be attractive to any major political party.
She says she’s running as an independent because she’s grown disillusioned with partisan politics.
“One of the things that I think we’re having issues with is team politics. It’s my team versus your team, and it doesn’t matter what my team does or says, my team is better than your team,” said Critchley.
She added that she’s finds it especially concerning when party politics prevents constituents from being properly represented, pointing to the Poilivre-Kurek switcheroo as a prime example of this problem.
Critchley also says she doesn’t have much time for the budding Alberta separatist movement, having fought under the Canadian flag in Aghanistan.
She recalls that one of her hardest days in uniform came when she took part in a press conference announcing the combat death of a close friend in September 2007.
Critchley calls herself a centrist and says she objects to “performative policies” on both the left and right.
She was one of many who welcomed the termination of the Liberals’ consumer carbon tax, calling it more symbolic than substantive.
“I’m not going to offer soft, easy answers to complex questions,” said Critchley.
She’s also said that she’ll work to repeal Trudeau-era gun control laws if elected to Parliament.
Critchley, who’s openly queer, says she also objects to right-wing points of view on trans issues.
She said that a recent Alberta court injunction stalling the province’s ban on transgender medicine for minors was “good news.”
“The (previous) supports for trans youth were in place to prevent youth suicides,” said Critchley.
Critchley said that she’ll be spending the next few weeks convening town halls to hear from voters in the riding.
She’s pre-emptively putting out an invitation to both Poilievre and Liberal candidate Darcy Spady to join her at one of these town halls.
“I will be welcoming those two for sure,” said Critchley.
Critchley has been less welcoming to some other potential candidates, though. She released an open letter to the Longest Ballot Committee — an activist group protesting former prime minister Justin Trudeau’s broken 2015 election promise on electoral reform — asking the group to “not come here and muddy the waters further.”
The group, which gets headlines by swamping the ballot with dozens of candidates, also targeted Poilievre’s Ottawa-area riding of Carleton during the federal election in April.
Critchley said the “tomfoolery” would only make it harder for a candidate like her to knock off Poilievre in the August byelection.

Independent candidate says Poilievre's byelection win isn't guaranteed
'This is a scam': Poilievre wants rules changed to stop long ballot protests
Protesters again signing up dozens of candidates to run against Conservative leader
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he wants Canada's election laws changed to prevent long ballot protests as he is set to face another one next month.
"We have to take action because this is a scam. It is unfair, it is unjust and it must stop," Poilievre said of the long ballot protests that have occurred in recent years — including in Poilievre's riding this past election.
The Conservative leader's comments came during a town hall in Stettler, Alta., last week. Stettler is a community in the riding of Battle River-Crowfoot where Poilievre is running to regain a seat in the House of Commons.
Clips of the event were posted online by a local news outlet, Hometown Media.
An electoral reform advocacy group — known as the Longest Ballot Committee — has been organizing dozens of candidates to run in byelections in recent years, resulting in metre-long ballots that have caused delays in vote counting and confounded some voters.
The group wants to put a citizens' assembly in charge of electoral reform and says political parties are too reluctant to make government more representative of the electorate.
After targeting Poilievre's former riding of Carleton, the group is now aiming to sign up 200 candidates in Battle River-Crowfoot — more than double the 91 that ran in Carleton in April.
An example of a ballot for the riding of Carleton during the 2025 election. (Justin Tang/The Canadian Press)
Poilievre said there were a number of changes that could prevent such protests from occurring. But he specifically suggested requiring 1,000 signatures to run, and ensuring that voters can only sign one nomination form.
"That would make it impossible for 200 people to go out and have their names piled onto the [candidate] list," Poilievre told the crowd in Stettler last week.
"There are a number of other things that you could do that would make it so that only real candidates who are truly running to put their name forward in our democracy are on that list."
Candidates need 100 signatures from voters in their riding to secure a nomination and electors are not prevented from signing multiple forms.
The Longest Ballot Committee rebuked Poilievre's suggestions, saying such a large increase in required signatures would have a "negative impact on Canadian democracy."
"This ill-conceived and self-serving electoral reform proposal by [Poilievre] is downright dangerous, and reinforces our conviction that politicians are not well suited to decide the rules of their own elections," the group said in a statement.
It said it would continue to use long ballots as a form of protest as "long as we are legally permitted to do so."
Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault holds up a sample ballot from a byelection that featured 91 candidates last year. (Parliament of Canada)
Poilievre is not the only one interested in curbing long ballot protests.
MPs were studying legislation last session that would have actually lowered the signature threshold to 75. That bill died when the House was prorogued in January.
But Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault appeared at a House committee last fall to offer his suggestions.
While he said he's in favour of lowering the threshold, Perrault argued that "certain penalties" should be imposed on individuals who sign — or encourage others to sign — multiple nomination papers in an effort to get as many candidates on a ballot as possible. He didn't say what those penalties should be.
Independent candidate tells protesters to back off
The Longest Ballot Committee has already registered dozens of candidates in Battle River-Crowfoot, and drawn the ire of other candidates besides Poilievre.
Bonnie Critchley is running as an Independent and pitching herself as an alternative to the Conservative leader, who she argues pushed out the local MP — Damien Kurek — so he could seek a seat after losing his own.
But the Beaver County local says the protest is making things difficult for her as an Independent who is actually interested in representing the constituents of Battle River-Crowfoot.
In an open letter to the Longest Ballot Committee posted on her campaign website, Critchley said there is a "backlash" in the riding from voters who are worried that she is a "fake out" candidate.
"I don't have a massive team, I don't have backing from millions of people. I have to go door to door within my community and explain to my neighbours that I have nothing to do with you," she wrote.
"I have to explain that I am here, in my home, and I am standing up for myself, my neighbours and my community against the guy from Ottawa who doesn't give a damn about us. Please do not bury me with your 'legal' election interference."
The deadline to register as a candidate in the byelection is July 28. Voting day in Battle River-Crowfoot is Aug. 18.

On behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel Garner, P.C., M.P. thank you for your email. Our office appreciates the time you took to get in touch with the MP. Due to the high volume of email correspondence our office receives, below is a guide on how your email will be responded to:
If you are a constituent of Calgary Nose Hill:
Queries regarding government programs, policies and operations take time to research, contact appropriate departments and collate information for dissemination to you. If you have provided your full contact details on your query, your email will be responded to as necessary.
If your query is case related (i.e. immigration, CPP, EI, tax issues, etc.), consent forms will need to be filled out before your file can be activated. If you have not yet filled out our office’s consent form, a staff member will be in contact with you.
If you are not a constituent of Calgary Nose Hill:
If you are not a Calgary Nose Hill resident, given the high volume of
emails we receive, your email will be reviewed and filed as INFORMATION.
If the email is Critic portfolio in nature, it will be responded to as
necessary.
If you are contacting MP Rempel Garner to review your case work, please first contact your local MP for assistance.
If your email is a form letter:
Thank you for submitting this form letter. Due to the high volume of emails M.P. Rempel Garner’s office receives, we are unable to individually reply to form letters, particularly from non constituents. Form letters are template letters generated by organizations, webforms and other sources on a given issue. However, M.P. Rempel Garner does review and consider information received from all form letters.
If you are a constituent and would like a response regarding the specific issue raised in your form letter, please email M.P. Rempel Garner’s office individually at this email address with “Constituent - (Insert subject)” in the subject of your email. This helps us to identify constituents who wish to receive a response among the hundreds of form letter responses our office receives on any given day.
Again, thank you for reaching out to our office.
Invites:
If you have invited MP Rempel Garner to your event, please note that decisions on what events to attend are completed on a bi-monthly basis. As our office receives hundreds of invitations each week, our office will only contact you if MP Rempel Garner will be attending.
Updates on MP Rempel Garner’s Work:
If you wish to know what is happening in Calgary Nose Hill and the job MP Rempel Garner is doing for you in Ottawa, please sign up for her e-newsletter on her website: https://mprempel.ca/
*M.P. Rempel Garner's office has a zero tolerance policy for threatening, abusive, or aggressive language or behaviour towards the Member and their staff. Phone calls, voicemails and emails containing threatening or abusive language will result in the termination of communications.
Thank you again.
Sincerely,
Office of The Honourable Michelle Rempel Garner, P.C., M.P.

Party Leader:
Grant S. Abraham
National Headquarters:

Tel.: 403-978-7084
info@unitedpartyofcanada.ca
Free. Prosperous. Great.

Docket: T-1557-15
Fredericton, New Brunswick, December 23, 2015
PRESENT: The Honourable Mr. Justice Bell
BETWEEN:
DAVID RAYMOND AMOS
Plaintiff
and
HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN
Defendant
ORDER
(Delivered orally from the Bench in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on
December 14, 2015)
The Plaintiff seeks an appeal de novo, by way of motion pursuant to
the Federal Courts Rules (SOR/98-106), from an Order made on November
12, 2015, in which Prothonotary Morneau struck the Statement of Claim
in its entirety.
At the outset of the hearing, the Plaintiff brought to my attention a
letter dated September 10, 2004, which he sent to me, in my then
capacity as Past President of the New Brunswick Branch of the Canadian
Bar Association, and the then President of the Branch, Kathleen Quigg,
(now a Justice of the New Brunswick Court of Appeal). In that letter
he stated:
As for your past President, Mr. Bell, may I suggest that you check the
work of Frank McKenna before I sue your entire law firm including you.
You are your brother’s keeper.
Frank McKenna is the former Premier of New Brunswick and a former
colleague of mine at the law firm of McInnes Cooper. In addition to
expressing an intention to sue me, the Plaintiff refers to a number of
people in his Motion Record who he appears to contend may be witnesses
or potential parties to be added. Those individuals who are known to
me personally, include, but are not limited to the former Prime
Minister of Canada, The Right Honourable Stephen Harper; former
Attorney General of Canada and now a Justice of the Manitoba Court of
Queen’s Bench, Vic Toews; former member of Parliament Rob Moore;
former Director of Policing Services, the late Grant Garneau; former
Chief of the Fredericton Police Force, Barry McKnight; former Staff
Sergeant Danny Copp; my former colleagues on the New Brunswick Court
of Appeal, Justices Bradley V. Green and Kathleen Quigg, and, retired
Assistant Commissioner Wayne Lang of the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police.
In the circumstances, given the threat in 2004 to sue me in my
personal capacity and my past and present relationship with many
potential witnesses and/or potential parties to the litigation, I am
of the view there would be a reasonable apprehension of bias should I
hear this motion. See Justice de Grandpré’s dissenting judgment in
Committee for Justice and Liberty et al v National Energy Board et al,
[1978] 1 SCR 369 at p 394 for the applicable test regarding
allegations of bias. In the circumstances, although neither party has
requested I recuse myself, I consider it appropriate that I do so.
AS A RESULT OF MY RECUSAL, THIS COURT ORDERS that the Administrator of
the Court schedule another date for the hearing of the motion. There
is no order as to costs.
“B. Richard Bell”
Judge
Below after the CBC article about your concerns (I made one comment
already) you will find the text of just two of many emails I had sent

far less numerous than that of the CROWN'S.
I see no need to explain myself to you at this time other than to
explain that if the CROWN is successfaul in its malicious attempt to

the CROWN and AMOS were familiar with then delivered an oral order for
another hearing of the appeal and recused himself referring to the
applicable test regarding allegations of bias based on Justice de
Grandpré’s dissenting judgment in Committee for Justice and Liberty et
al v National Energy Board et al, [1978] 1 SCR 369 at p 394 for.
2. AMOS, provided the Registry Office of the Federal Court with a
list of judges with whom he had a conflict of interest over two weeks
before the upcoming hearing on January 11, 2016. The list of Justices
in Federal Court is as follows: Justices Richard F. Southcott, Sylvie
E. Roussel, Catherine M. Kane, Yvan Roy, Cecily Y. Strickland, Glennys
L. McVeigh, George R. Locke, Martine St-Louis, René LeBlanc, Henry S.
Brown, Alan Diner, Keith M. Boswell, Denis Gascon, Simon Fothergill,
Anne Marie McDonald and B. Richard Bell.
3. On January 11, 2016, AMOS stood before Justice Richard F.
Southcott and did his best to explain why the judge should recuse
himself. Justice Southcott did not agree and stated he would only hear
arguments with regard to the faulty motions made by the CROWN (The
motion to strike named the wrong defendant and the opposition to the
appeal was unsigned and served very late). The judge refused to look
at the plaintiff's motion in opposition to the defendant's motion to
strike or the evidence supporting the appeal of the prothonotary's
decision that Justice Bell had discussed with AMOS and the CROWN one
month earlier. AMOS objected to Justice Southcott's actions and
informed him that whatever he decided would be appealed forthwith.
Justice Southcott reserved his decision.
4. On February 4, 2016, AMOS filed this appeal of Justice
Southcott's order. In a sincere effort to offset what had occurred
Federal Court with regards to conflicts of interest, the Registry
Office of the Federal Court of Appeal was provided with the list of
Justices of this court whom the plaintiff had issues with before he
filed any documents into the record of this matter. The list of
Justices is as follows: Justices David W. Stratas, Yves de Montigny,
Richard Boivin, André F.J. Scott, Donald J. Rennie, Wyman W. Webb,
David G. Near and C. Michael Ryer (Who resigned effective May 1, 2016)
5. On February 12, 2016, this cross appeal was filed by Her
Majesty the Queen thereby making the plaintiff, David Raymond Amos the
respondent. Solicitors of the CROWN continued in their incompetent and
unethical defence by claiming that the Federal Court erred in its
decisions because it did not have jurisdiction to hear the matter.
6. On January 30, 2017, the CROWN faxed 4 pages of a memorandum
of fact and law of the respondent byway. Whereas AMOS knew he was the
respondent on cross- appeal, he suspected the CROWN had discovered its
error and stopped the fax transmission in order to correct it. On
February 2, 2017, the CROWN sent a fax stating that it had notified
the court of its error and sought directions from the court. The
plaintiff heard nothing further from the court about the mistake made
by the CROWN. Later he received hard copy of a memorandum of fact and
law of the respondent byway of regular Canada Post. The Registry
Office instructed the plaintiff to file a memorandum of fact and law
of the respondent by March 6, 2016 and leave it for the judges of this
court to decide the matter.
7. The CROWN has filed another faulty document with an incomplete
statement of facts and wishes to argue a recent decision made on
August 31, 2016 by a coram of judges in which a correction was made on
February 23, 2017.
8. The actions of the CROWN in matter caused it to be subject to
more claims.
PART I – STATEMENT OF FACTS
9. On September 16, 2015, the Plaintiff filed a statement of
claim (The Claim) against Her Majesty the Queen. The plaintiff when to
great length to explain to the court why his rights under the Canadian
Charter of Rights and Freedoms Sections 2 (s) and (d) had been
breached and why the Federal Court was the only court to have the
jurisdiction to hear this matter.
10. On October 16, 2015, the plaintiff received a copy of a notice of
a motion that the CROWN filed with a heading falsely stating that the
Claim was against the Attorney General of Canada. The CROWN asked the
court to strike the Claim in its entirety pursuant to Rule 221 (1),
(a) and (c) and to award the defendant the costs of creating its
incompetent motion.
11. On October 26, 2015, AMOS filed a motion in opposition to the
motion to strike. The plaintiff did not recognize the standing of a
Prothonotary to dismiss a claim seeking eleven million dollars in the
form of relief. The plaintiff sought an oral argument before a Justice
of Federal Court and asked for costs in the creation of his motion in
response.
12. On November 12, 2015, the Registry Office in Montreal faxed a
redacted copy of the Order of the Prothonotary, Richard Morneau. The
Registry Office of Federal Court in Montreal would not respond to the
plaintiff's queries as to what was written on the third page of the
court order.
13. On November 19, 2015, the Registry Office in Ottawa faxed a true
copy of the order of the Prothonotary, Richard Morneau after the
plaintiff had contacted and complained to the Attorney General of
Canada, Federal Court's legal counsel and the Office of Commissioner
of Judicial Affairs amongst others. Once the plaintiff read the third
page of the order he understood why it had been redacted. It stated
"No costs are awarded to the defendant since none were requested by
same". It was obvious that the Registry Office in Montreal acted
fraudulently because the prothonotary had not studied any of the
documents in the record at all.
14. On November 20, 2015, the plaintiff filed a notice of motion for
hearing on December 14, 2015 in order to appeal the decision to the
prothonotary.
15. On December 8, 2015, the plaintiff filed a motion record of the
appeal with a supporting affidavit and exhibits. One exhibit was a
true copy of an American police surveillance wiretap tape which is one
of many he has in his possession that all law enforcement authorities
in Canada and the USA he has encountered have refuse to investigate.
16. On December 14, 2014, Justice B. Richard Bell discussed with the
plaintiff some of the documents on file in the record and their common
concerns then ethically recused himself on his own motion. Another
hearing of the motion to appeal was scheduled for January 11, 2016.
17. On or about December 22, 2015, the plaintiff provided the
Registry Office a list of all the judges seated in on the bench in
Federal Court that had a conflict of interest with the him in order to
prevent another hearing as had occurred with Justice Bell.
19. On February 4, 2016, the plaintiff filed an appeal of Justice
Southcott's order and the Registry Office of the Federal Court of
Appeal was provided with the list of Justices of this court who have a
conflict of interest with him.
20. On February 12, 2016, this cross appeal was filed by Her Majesty
the Queen thereby making the plaintiff, David Raymond Amos the
respondent in this memorandum of fact and law.
21. Solicitors of the CROWN continued in their incompetent and
unethical defence of their client in the Federal Court of Appeal. They
began by by refusing to discuss the contents of the appeal book until
it was too late to do so then faxing a document containing their
demands and quoting the rules of the court.
22. In April of 2016 after attempting to resolve his longstanding
concerns with the Commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police,
the Commissioner of Federal Judicial Affairs, the Canadian Judicial
Council, the Commissioner of Revenue Canada, the Attorney Generals of
the United States and Canada, the plaintiff became aware a of a
webpage hosted by a server based in Sweden about this very lawsuit.
The malicious webpage within the egregious website entitled known as
Encyclopedia Dramatica was supported by a new round of blogs and
YouTube channels based in the USA. In an effort to put a stop to the
malice and bring this matter to a conclusion. The plaintiff requested
an oral hearing of this matter in confidence to this court's judicial
administrator pursuant to Rule 35.
23. The plaintiff heard nothing back from the Judicial Administrator
of the Federal Court of Appeal. However the confidential letter and
the draft of the motion the judicial administrator had requested was
placed the public record and a copy was sent to the CROWN.
24. On May 5, 2016 the CROWN docketed a letter addressed to an
unnamed party within the Federal Court of Appeal insulting the
plaintiff and ridiculing his confidential letter to the Judicial
Administrator. The plaintiff heard nothing further from the court on
the topic so he filed a motion seeking case management and directions
from the court about the creation of the appeal book.
25. On May12, 2016, Justice Trudel made an order denying an oral
hearing and case management and providing directions on the appeal
book.
26. On June 10, 2016, the plaintiff followed the order of Justice
Trudel and filed a motion about in the creation of the appeal book.
27. On June 20, 2016, the CROWN responded changing its demands about
the creation of transcripts and opposed the filing of important
documents supporting the plaintiff's claim being recorded within the
appeal book.
28. On July 4, 2016, Justice David Stratas made the order pertaining
to the creation of the appeal book instead of Justice Trudel. The
plaintiff went forward and created the appeal book so that he would
not be in default. However he could not ethically follow any orders of
judges that he and the court knew he had a conflict of interest with.
Some lawyers working for the Federal government and certain private
lawyers are well aware that the plaintiff has no respect for Justice
Stratas whatsoever. The lack of respect is caused by Justice Stratas'
former partnership with the Heenan Blaikie law firm and his
appointment as a Special Advocate by the Harper government. The
plaintiff diligently attempted to tried resolve his concerns about
Justice Stratas in confidence with the Attorney General of Canada and
the Canadian Judicial Council and was ignored.
29. On Oct 17, 2016, Justice Pelletier issued an order for a status
review and the plaintiff responded on November 21,2016 which was one
day later due to human error. The Registry Office did not record the
response in the docket and would not permit the plaintiff to file the
motion that Justice Trudel had stated he could file until further
notice from the court.
30. On November 30, 2016, CROWN also responded to the status review
stating things that were definitely not true while admitting its
knowledge of police surveillance wiretap tapes and many other things
yet still considered the Claim to be frivolous and vexatious.
31. On December 19, 2016, three Justices that the Federal Court of
Appeal is well aware that the plaintiff has a conflict of interest
with dismissed the appeal in writing without having to meet him in a
public hearing and deny the conflict.
PART II – ISSUES
32. The plaintiff considers that the CROWN is being frivolous and
vexatious to claim that the Federal Court does not have jurisdiction
over legislative affairs in the Province of New Brunswick in light of
the fact that New Brunswick has no Constitution whatsoever.
Irrefutable proof is the Constitution Amendment, 1993 (New
Brunswick). The Governor General and Commander-in-Chief was advised by
the Queen's Privy Council to issue a proclamation in order to amend
the Constitution of Canada that was recorded by the Registrar General
of Canada. Therefore the plaintiff has every right to defend his
rights and freedoms under the Constitution Act, 1982 in New Brunswick.
Furthermore the plaintiff has stated several times though out the
documents found in the record of this matter that he has been barred
from access to the House of Commons, the National Capital District,
all provincial legislative properties, the University of New Brunswick
and the Town of Woodstock New Brunswick apparently for the benefit of
his political opponents and their many cohorts.
33. The Governor General, the Attorney General of Canada, many
parliamentarians, the Commissioner and many members of the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police, many members of the Canadian Forces, the
Canadian Judicial Council, the the Commissioner of Federal Judicial
Affairs, Commissioner of Public Sector Integrity, the Commissioner of
Revenue Canada, many solicitors acting on behalf of the CROWN at a
Federal and provincial level throughout Canada have continued to
refuse to act within the scope of their employment in dealing with the
plaintiff since he first ran for a seat in the 38th Parliament in
2004.
34. The Governor General of admitted in writing that she had two sets
of documents and a CD of the plaintiff's (one set was forwarded from
the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick) involving public corruption.
All public servants are relying on the actions of the Attorney General
of Canada and the judges of this court to make the plaintiff's
concerns appear to be frivolous, vexatious and without any merit
whatsoever. However not one lawyer is willing to argue the plaintiff.
35. The plaint must remind the court that since the Claim was filed,
four lawyers three parliamentarians and one former parliamentarian
have responded to the plaintiff in writing. They are Minister of
Heritage Melanie Joly, David McQunity MP, Geoff Regan the Speaker of
the House of Commons and Peter Milliken the former Speaker of the
House of Commons when the plaintiff was barred from that public
property in 2006. The plaintiff has filed their communications to him
in the public record of this matter and the evidence of it has been
ignored.
PART III – SUBMISSIONS
36. Whereas the CROWN now wishes to argue a recent decision involving
the actions of a prothonotary, the plaintiff to relies on the Rules of
Federal Court Section 50 in particular. It states as follows:
50 (1) A prothonotary may hear, and make any necessary orders relating
to, any motion under these Rules other than a motion
(a) in respect of which these Rules or an Act of Parliament has
expressly conferred jurisdiction on a judge;
(b) in the Federal Court of Appeal;
(c) for summary judgment or summary trial other than
(i) in an action referred to in subsection (2), or
(2) A prothonotary may hear an action exclusively for monetary
relief, or an action in rem claiming monetary relief, in which no
amount claimed by a
51 (1) An order of a prothonotary may be appealed by a motion to a
judge of the Federal Court.
(2) Notice of the motion shall be served and filed within 10 days
after the day on which the order under appeal was made and at least
four days before the day fixed for the hearing of the motion.
PART IV – ORDER SOUGHT
The plaintiff therefore asks this court for the following relief:
(a) A public apology by the Prime Minister and each Premier for the
illegal barring of a citizen from access to parliamentary properties.
(b) A declaration signed by the Minister of Public Safety and
witnessed by the Governor General stating that the Canadian government
will no longer allow the RCMP and the Canadian Forces to harass the
Plaintiff and his Clan.
(c) A settlement of eleven million dollars ($11,000,000.00) in the
form of relief and punitive damages for being barred from eleven
parliamentary properties for eleven years.
(d) Costs to the Plaintiff in bringing this matter before the court

NOTICE MOTION FOR AN ORAL HEARING
TAKE NOTICE THAT the Plaintiff, David Raymond Amos pursuant to Rule
359 of the Federal Court Rules will make a motion to the Court on
Monday, April 10th, 2017 at 9:30 am as soon thereafter as the motion
can be heard at the Federal Court in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
THE MOTION IS FOR:
1. The Plaintiff seeks an order made by a Justice of Federal Court
whom he knows does not have an interest in the outcome of this lawsuit
affirming or denying the conflict of interest he has with the Justices
Richard Southcott, Catherine Kane, René LeBlanc, Glennys McVeigh,
Alan Diner, Yvan Roy, Martine St-Louis, Henry Brown, Cecily
Strickland, Denis Gascon, George Locke, Keith Boswell, Sylvie Roussel,
Simon Fothergill, Anne Marie McDonald, Yves de Montigny, Wyman Webb,
Donald Rennie, André Scott, Richard Boivin, David Near and David
Stratas. This order is sought before any hearing of a cross-appeal of
this matter is held within the Federal Court of Appeal
THE GROUNDS FOR THE MOTION ARE:
2. The aforementioned judges were named by the plaintiff on lists he
provided to the Registry Offices of the Federal Court and the Federal
Court of Appeal, the Canadian Judicial Council and the Commissioner of
Federal Judicial Affairs after Justice B. Richard Bell on December

matter. It is the Plaintiff's opinion that all judges must be held to
the same standard that Justice Bell filed on December 23rd, 2015.
"At the outset of the hearing, the Plaintiff brought to my attention
a letter dated September 10, 2004, which he sent to me, in my then
capacity as Past President of the New Brunswick Branch of the Canadian
Bar Association, and the then President of the Branch, Kathleen Quigg,
(now a Justice of the New Brunswick Court of Appeal)."
And
"In the circumstances, given the threat in 2004 to sue me in my
personal capacity and my past and present relationship with many
potential witnesses and/or potential parties to the litigation, I am
of the view there would be a reasonable apprehension of bias should I
hear this motion. See Justice de Grandpré’s dissenting judgment in
Committee for Justice and Liberty et al v National Energy Board et al,
[1978] 1 SCR 369 at p 394 for the applicable test regarding
allegations of bias. In the circumstances, although neither party has
requested I recuse myself, I consider it appropriate that I do so."
THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTRY EVIDENCE will be used at the hearing of the
Plaintiff's Motion
1. True copies of numerous documents that the various solicitors and
agents of the CROWN and the associates of various law firms of the
aforementioned Justices of the Federal Court and the Federal Court of
Appeal have had in their possession before this claim was filed

I have the advantage, sir, of having read many of your emails over the years.
As such, I do not think a phone conversation between us, and
specifically one which you might mistakenly assume was in response to
your threat of legal action against me, is likely to prove a
productive use of either of our time.
If there is some specific matter about which you wish to communicate

Attorney General of Canada and now a Justice of the Manitoba Court of
Queen’s Bench, Vic Toews; former member of Parliament Rob Moore;
former Director of Policing Services, the late Grant Garneau; former
There
is no order as to costs.

was not ignoring or procrastinating to respond to your concerns.
As your attachment sent today refers from Premier Graham, our position
is clear on your dead calf issue: Our forensic labs do not process
testing on animals in cases such as yours, they are referred to the
Atlantic Veterinary College in Charlottetown who can provide these
services. If you do not choose to utilize their expertise in this
instance, then that is your decision and nothing more can be done.
As for your other concerns regarding the US Government, false
imprisonment and Federal Court Dates in the US, etc... it is clear
that Federal authorities are aware of your concerns both in Canada
the US. These issues do not fall into the purvue of Detachment
and policing in Petitcodiac, NB.
It was indeed an interesting and informative conversation we had on
December 23rd, and I wish you well in all of your future endeavors.

New Saint John police chief is a retired OPP superintendent
Robert Bruce plans to stay three to five years in job
Hadeel Ibrahim · CBC News · Posted: May 14, 2021 12:47 PM ADT
Robert M. Bruce will begin his role as Saint John Police Force chief
on July 1. (Submitted by Saint John Board of Police Commissioners)
The Saint John Board of Police Commissioners has appointed Robert M.
Bruce as the new chief of police.
Bruce retired from the Ontario Provincial Police in 2015 after 33
years on the force. He was involved in hostage negotiations, search
and rescue and other departments before he became a superintendent.
Commission chair Ed Keyes said Bruce was chosen because of his
extensive policing experience.
"Experience is it," he said when asked why Bruce was chosen over the
50 other applicants for the job.
Saint John police chief to step down after only a year in role
Ten applicants were chosen for interviews, and the board then picked
Bruce, who will assume the role of chief on July 1.
"He was chosen due to his extensive policing experience in leadership
roles with the Ontario Provincial Police," Keyes said. "So he was just
exactly what the board felt were the ideal qualities and
qualifications for the next chief."
Tony Hayes will continue to act as chief until July 1, when he will
return to his position of deputy chief.
Bruce will take over from Stephan Drolet, who left the chief's
position after only a year for personal reasons. Drolet himself took
over from Bruce Connell, who came out of retirement two years ago to
become chief. Connell was in the position for two years.
Experience mattered most to board
Keyes said Bruce has committed to staying on for three to five years.
He said in hiring a new chief, experience trumped the candidate's
ability to stay in the role for a long time.
"It's the most important position in the same police force," Keyes
said. "Length of stay has nothing to do with it. Demonstrated
leadership qualities, qualifications, ability to lead — those are the
things that we look for."
Before committing to becoming chief, Bruce was spending his retirement
giving speeches on leadership. He also wrote a book titled Leading
Beyond Your Presence: Becoming The Leader You Want to be Led By.
Keyes said Bruce wouldl not be available for an interview this week.

Conservatives are in a mood to fight — with each other
They're forgetting that today's personal attacks become tomorrow's attack ads
"If we can't go out and speak to Canadians in all parts of the country and make sure that we are trustworthy, that we don't scare them … every time I hear a Conservative talk about some conspiracy theory, I realize that there's another group of swing voters in the [Greater Toronto Area] that just are not going to come our way," Aitchison said.
"Because all we do is yell and scream at each other. We're witnessing it now."
Aitchison, a little-known backbencher, is trying to carve out a niche as the reasonable candidate. While he's very unlikely to win this race, he might come away from it having boosted his personal brand.
And if the Conservative Party loses another federal election in 2025, he might be able to say he tried to warn his fellow partisans.
But Conservatives just might not be interested in being calm and measured right now. That would at least explain the scene on Thursday when the five candidates staged what was probably the most aggressive intra-party debate in recent memory.
A debate that became a brawl
It was Pierre Poilievre who set the tone for this leadership campaign with his early decision to lob rhetorical bombs at Jean Charest and Patrick Brown. But it was Charest who fired the first shot Thursday night with an attack on the Conservative Party's promise in 2015 to establish a "barbaric cultural practices" tip line — something that Charest said was still costing the party votes in 2021.
Charest wasn't involved with the Conservative campaign in 2015, of course. But Poilievre was.
A moment later, Leslyn Lewis decided to accuse Poilievre of being insufficiently supportive of the trucker convoy that laid siege to Ottawa in February and inspired blockades of border crossings in other parts of the country. Poilievre quibbled with Lewis's account and then pivoted to attacking Charest's argument that Poilievre had been too supportive of the convoy.
WATCH: Conservative leadership candidates trade blows over the convoy protests
Poilievre next accused Charest of running a scandal-plagued government in Quebec. Lewis said the other candidates — particularly Poilievre — were refusing to be clear about their positions on abortion. Charest criticized Poilievre for ignoring Preston Manning's call for the candidates to avoid personal attacks.
Poilievre and Charest battled over the latter's record as premier and then Poilievre demanded to know how much Charest had been paid by Huawei, the Chinese telecommunications giant. When Poilievre wouldn't stop interrupting Charest ("How much? How much?") Charest shot back — "We're not on a student council, Pierre."
WATCH: Poilievre goads Charest over Huawei
Charest then made a point of noting that Poilievre had refused to say whether a federal government led by him would intervene against Quebec's Bill 21 if a legal challenge of the law reached the Supreme Court.
Patrick Brown, who was not in attendance, ended up being criticized by both Poilievre and one of the debate's moderators.
Parties used to avoid internal conflict
It was in the middle of all this that Aitchison made his appeal for calm — which apparently offended Lewis.
"When you speak about conspiracy theories, there were a lot of quote-unquote conspiracy theories that came true. And the Liberals actually used that to divide us. So I'm really surprised that you're here saying we should unite when you're labelling your fellow Conservatives as conspiracy theorists," said Lewis, who wrote an op-ed for the National Post in October 2020 that claimed a "socialist coup" was afoot.
WATCH: Charest denies Poilievre's claim that he's not a real Conservative
Conventional wisdom in Canadian politics — at least since the Liberal leadership race in 2006 — says that leadership candidates should temper their public criticisms of each other. A Conservative attack ad that used a clip of a debate exchange between Michael Ignatieff and Stéphane Dion showed how such disagreements could end up being used against a party.
But Poilievre has always embraced political conflict as a virtue. In this case it's likely an implicit part of his campaign's argument — that if you're a Conservative Party member, you can watch what Poilievre is doing to Charest and imagine what he'd do to Justin Trudeau.
Conservative
leadership candidate Leslyn Lewis speaks about leadership candidate
Pierre Poilievre as Jean Charest and Scott Aitchison look on during a
debate at the Canada Strong and Free Network conference in Ottawa on May
5, 2022. (Adrian Wyld/The Canadian Press)
Conservatives have now lost three elections to Trudeau, a prime minister for whom they hold special animus. Their last failed leader promised to be a "true blue" conservative and then overturned a decade of party orthodoxy by acknowledging that putting a price on carbon is an effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
And it's also been a long two years — for everyone — of living with a pandemic.
Conservatives aren't just mad with each other
So maybe it's not surprising they're feeling a little agitated — a feeling that extends to targets beyond the current leadership race.
There's Justin Trudeau, taxes and government regulation, of course. But candidates like Poilievre, Lewis and Baber pointed last night to other alleged threats and sources of unhappiness: vaccine mandates, public health restrictions, "cancel culture," "wokeism," "censorship," the "elites," the "liberal media" and the CBC. Not to be outdone, the moderators also lamented the effects of the "legacy media" and the "ivory tower commentariat."
Opposing that list were the things the candidates professed to like, such as conservative principles, consistency and "freedom." The phrase "climate change" didn't pass anyone's lips during the debate, but there was lots of enthusiasm for increasing production of oil and gas and building pipelines.
If the Canadian public is feeling angry in 2025, the Conservative Party might find itself in a good position to be a voice for those feelings.
That's assuming Conservatives are still able to stand each other when this race is over, of course.
At the outset of Thursday's debate and then again at its conclusion, Charest notably avoided shaking Poilievre's hand — a reminder, perhaps, that sometimes people take these things personally.

Call to Action
As we continue
to engage the Conservative Party for specifics on their reasons for
deeming our campaign ineligible please see the email below that was sent
by Jack Fonseca, a Director at the CLC to his community. It outlines a
number of actions you can take to help demand that the Conservative
Party revisit its decision as it offends the democratic process and the
good will of many Canadians and members of the CPC. Your continued
support by voicing your objection to their ruling is appreciated.
Demand an inquiry and proof that the campaign did not meet both
financial goals that were set.
We continue to stand by asserting that my voice for Truth, Transparency
and Real Conversations should be part of this summer's leadership run. -

The red Tory swamp strikes back
On behalf of CLC, I’d like to thank you for your generous response to our last-minute donation appeals on behalf of pro-life, pro-family CPC leadership hopefuls Grant Abraham and Marc Dalton.
Thanks to the strong response by CLC supporters, Grant Abraham raised the full $300,000 entry fee to get on the ballot, plus 598 nomination signatures.
Unfortunately, MP Marc Dalton raised only $200,000 in the end, and did not make the cut.
So, on Friday evening, our team here at CLC was pretty excited that 3 out of our 4 endorsed candidates made it onto the final ballot, including Grant Abraham, Joseph Bourgault and Leslyn Lewis.
However, that excitement turned to outrage when, on Sunday evening, we learned that Grant Abraham received notice from the party that he allegedly did NOT meet the financial requirements, in spite of having raised the stated $300K buy-in fee and having obtained the required signatures by the 5pm deadline on April 29th.
This did not make sense so we started to ask questions to our contacts in the party.
What they told us is that the party tacked onto the total donations a 15% “administration fee” that candidates would have to obtain on top of the $300,000, making the real total that a candidate had to raise $345K or even $353K, depending how it’s calculated!
Abraham is appealing the decision given the false advertising by the party, which always communicated $300K as the fee to get on the final ballot, and never any other amount.
An even more outrageous disqualification was that of Joseph Bourgault who had submitted almost $400K and more than 1,000 signatures by the April 29th deadline.
As with Abraham, the party claimed he did not meet the $300K buy-in fee. We’ve learned that Bourgault will also be appealing this ridiculous decision.
Something else we’ve discovered is that the party will be keeping at least the first $200,000 of the buy-in fee from each candidate. This money will not be refunded to donors, like you, even though your preferred candidate was blocked from running.
I have no doubt whatsoever that if the red Tory establishment swamp could get away with disqualifying Leslyn Lewis, they would've done it to her too.
However, Lewis is too high profile owing to her previous leadership run, and too popular among party members. The party elites know that the backlash for disqualifying Dr. Lewis would be too great, so they have no choice but to let her compete.
We hope that Bourgault and Abraham will appeal these disqualifications and win, in court if necessary, because it's totally unfair and undemocratic.
CLC is grateful that Dr. Lewis herself spoke out against the disqualification of Bourgault and Abraham, saying on Twitter:

Conservatives have always accused the Liberals of being the party of corruption and anti-democracy. That accusation has now come home to roost in the CPC party.
One of the pillars of the CPC, and of the broader “small-c” conservative movement, is democracy – letting the people, not the elites, decide who should represent them. Therefore, this sort of Cancel Culture has no business in the Conservative Party.
In the end, if Bourgault and Abraham are unsuccessful in their appeals, Campaign Life Coalition will do its best to ensure that Leslyn Lewis is victorious as the only green-lit, pro-lifer of the six “verified” candidates.
Unless the party reverses its decision about the falsely disqualified socon candidates, that “final” ballot listing will include Pierre Poilievre, Jean Charest, Patrick Brown, Scott Aitchison, and Roman Baber.
Poilievre, Charest, Brown, and Aitchison are all red-light-rated candidates who do not deserve a #2 ranking when it comes to voting time, owing to their support for abortion and LGBT ideology.
CLC is still in the process of evaluating Baber, and it’s possible he may end up with a yellow-light rating, although that has not yet been finalized.
We know it’s tempting to be so disgusted with the red Tory swamp and their continual efforts to purge social conservatives from the party, but please do not give up your seat at the table.
You must stay engaged to preserve our collective voice as a pro-life, pro-family, pro-faith movement. We must stay at the table in order to support Leslyn Lewis, even if she ends up the only social conservative in the race.
If you are a CPC member, you can express your disappointment to the Party by contacting the members of its Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) and requesting that they reinstate Bourgault and Abraham on the ballot, without delay.
