Hundreds of motorcycles rolled through downtown Ottawa on Saturday as part of the weekend Rolling Thunder Ottawa rally.
Earlier in the morning, crowds gathered at the National War Memorial near Parliament Hill.
One person was arrested on Elgin Street, Ottawa police confirmed through Twitter.
Later,
the service confirmed another person was arrested for breaching their
release conditions, which included not being in the downtown core.
Saturday's events come after police reported that a crowd assembled on Rideau Street on Friday evening became aggressive.

Officers
were deployed with helmets and shields to help control the crowd. Seven
people were arrested for various charges, including assaulting police.
Some of those arrests were also for breach of undertakings, police
confirmed Saturday morning.
"I'm
here for the veterans," said Sonny, a demonstrator draped in a Canadian
flag at the National War Memorial. "It's a rally. Not a protest.
"We're going to leave right afterwards. We're giving honour and respect back to this country."
The schedule issued by organizers also includes an afternoon rally on Parliament Hill.
While
many mask mandates and other COVID-19 health restrictions have been
lifted, some in attendance were focused on ones that remain,
including the requirement for many federal employees to be vaccinated and those for air travel.
"I

This
is the route that the Rolling Thunder Ottawa motorcycle rally is
expected to follow on Saturday, according to Ottawa police. (CBC)
While police shared the expected route for the hundreds of motorcyclists driving
through downtown on Saturday, they also established a vehicle exclusion
zone starting Thursday evening. Pedestrians, cyclists, public transit
and other vehicles may enter the secured area, but not motorized
vehicles involved in the Rolling Thunder event.

Special
no-parking zones are also being set up in nearby neighbourhoods. A
counter-protest also gathered at the National War Memorial earlier on
Saturday.
"We came here to let people know that's a fringe.
They do not represent all veterans, our nation or anything," said
Clayton Goodwin, a counter-protester and veteran. "That is a monument
owned by Canada, not veterans. Not to be politicized. You tore down
fences and politicized it."
On
Saturday morning, the City of Ottawa's bylaw services branch posted on
Twitter that it had issued 417 tickets and towed 30 vehicles. Police
have also towed three vehicles so far, for a total of 33.
Police also tweeted that a vehicle removed by bylaw officers on Friday attempted to enter Ottawa on Saturday but was stopped, inspected and placed out of service.
Three tickets were also issued for noise and smoking violations.
Before
the weekend, organizers indicated they would leave after a Sunday
morning church service in the Vanier neighbourhood of Ottawa, according
to police.

OTTAWA — Hundreds of people packed an Ottawa church on Sunday morning
to mark the final schedule event of the weekend-long “Rolling Thunder”
protest as police launched an investigation into vandalism that
allegedly took place ahead of the gathering.
Bikers, “Rolling Thunder” rally supporters and other worshippers
arrived at the Capital City Bikers’ Church to find its brick exterior
had been vandalized with spray-painted messages including “fascists” and
“no haven for fascism.”
The Ottawa Police Service confirmed its
hate crime unit is investigating “an incident of hate-motivated Mischief
at a religious institution” on on Carillon Street, the same one where
the church is located.
But the incident did little to suppress the spirits of the enthusiastic, peaceful crowd.
A four-piece band belted out soulful Christian rock songs while hundreds of worshipers waved their arms in the air.
Families,
children and even pets packed the darkened building, as purple flood
lights and a stained-glass image of Jesus illuminated by the outside sun
lit up the stage inside. A bar in the back of the Pentecostal church
sold soft drinks, snacks and coffee.
“You begin to talk about hell
and — ‘Oh, you’re one of those religious fanatics, aren’t you?”’ Pastor
Rob McKee asked the crowd during his sermon. His long, grey beard
spilled onto his button-up plaid shirt, which he wore with a pair of
loose-fitting jeans. “We all love the part that God is love, so if I was
the enemy I would work really hard to try to get people to believe, no,
that’s a scam, that’s fake news.”
Attendees socialized in the
parking lot once the service wrapped up. Most expressed their intentions
to leave Ottawa, though some indicated they planned to move on to a
potential protest in Montreal or return to Parliament Hill.
The
Sunday morning service was said to be the last event in the weekend-long
“Rolling Thunder” rally, organized in part by a group called Freedom
Fighters Canada.
Participants began arriving in Ottawa Friday afternoon, bringing
large crowds to a downtown core still on edge after the three-week-long
“Freedom Convoy” occupation in February.
“Rolling Thunder” organizers say the rally was set up to oppose
COVID-19 vaccine mandates, but as in February, some demonstrators had a
longer list of grievances.
Randy Hill from Penticton, B.C.,
arrived at the church service in a red pickup decked out with Canadian
flags and a “faith not fear” sticker on the side. He said he and his
wife Carol-Anne are opposed to all vaccine mandates and government
measures and intend to stay put.
“We want this government removed
by God and a righteous government put in place. The people in charge of
this government are accountable to God,” he said.
The Ottawa
Police Service arrested three people on Saturday, though the day’s
protests remained mostly peaceful. Crowds took part in a ceremony at the
War Memorial in the morning followed by a motorcycle drive-by and an
afternoon demonstration on Parliament Hill.
The force said one
woman was arrested for assaulting police on Elgin Street, where the
motorcycle rally took place, and a man was arrested for breaching
conditions stemming from February’s “Freedom Convoy” occupation.

Another man is facing several charges after allegedly “rushing” an
Ontario Provincial Police motorcycle, including dangerous driving,
assault with a weapon and violating conditions stemming from the last
round of protests, the Ottawa Police Service said in a news release.
Ottawa police have called in backup from RCMP, OPP and a number of municipal forces.
More
than 760 parking tickets had been issued and 39 vehicles have been
towed since early Friday morning, city officials said Sunday. Ten other
tickets have been issued for infractions including noise, smoking and
public urination.
Steve Bell, interim chief of the Ottawa Police
Service, has warned the protesters they will not be allowed to start a
long-term occupation this time. But some citizens, including Centreville
Community Association president Mary Huang, say the real test will be
in seeing whether people actually leave the city on Sunday afternoon.

Going to church this weekend? You might get towed!
The
city of Ottawa has setup a tow-away zone on the two blocks surrounding
the Capital City Bikers Church. This will make it extremely difficult
and even dangerous for seniors and those with disabilities to come to
church this weekend. For 50 years people have parked on these streets to
go to church because, like many older churches, they do not have a
parking lot.

for police services across the province as officers contend with

spoke in Etobicoke at an event to launch his Progressive Conservative
party's 'Yes Express' campaign bus for the upcoming provincial election.

province, they're working collaboratively together and I just want to
thank them," Ford said.
"These are the women and men that put
their lives on the line every day for the people of Ontario and I will
always support our police."

Many
of the organizers of this weekend's rally and adjacent protests in
Ottawa were involved in the convoy protest this past winter. (Frédéric Pepin/CBC)
Protests
planned for Ottawa this weekend are being organized by several people
who took part in the weeks-long occupation of the city during the
Freedom Convoy earlier this year.
"Rolling Thunder Ottawa" and
adjacent events are planned to begin Friday with events running through
Sunday. There are different motives for each of the groups officially
involved in organizing the event, but organizers were all involved in
the Freedom Convoy in some capacity.
A group known as "Live From the Shed" has been the most vocal and visible organizer of the Rolling Thunder events.
"The
Shed" gained prominence during the Freedom Convoy for offering a
24-hour live feed of activities on Wellington Street during what became
the occupation of downtown Ottawa.
Jason Vanderwier — often
referred to as "Jay from the Shed" — owned the black freightliner
carrying a fishing shack-like structure on its truck bed.
During
the Freedom Convoy protest, it was a prominently visible structure to
anyone coming into the city's downtown core. Vanderwier was among the
first protesters to arrive on Wellington Street, parking the shed near
the corner of Metcalfe Street in front of Parliament Hill.
According
to statements made on social media videos and in media interviews,
Vanderwier's brother built the shed to reside during the protest.
Multiple
people involved in organizing this weekend's rally were arrested for
activities during the Freedom Convoy, and have continued to support

Ottawa protests for a weekend, but said he decided to stay longer and
get more involved.
Paisley soon became a "de-facto" captain tasked with co-ordinating fuel and meals for protesters parked on Wellington.
Soon, Vanderwier
and Paisley had joined others in forming what became "Live from the
Shed" — one of the many popular social media channels that
updated supporters and curious onlookers on what was happening in Ottawa
during the convoy.
Paisley, Vanderwier and others regularly filmed their activities and broadcast them to thousands of viewers.
Both
were arrested on Feb. 19 and Vanderwier captured his arrest on his own
livestream. He was given four charges, including mischief and disobeying
a lawful court order, before he was released.
Paisley was arrested but then released without charges.
Both
have continued to take part in convoy-adjacent protests that have taken
place around southern Ontario since the protest in Ottawa ended.

Veterans 4 Freedom
The
social channels for Live From the Shed have continued to promote
various protests. In recent days Paisley has also emerged as one of the
key voices behind Rolling Thunder, alongside Neil Sheard.
Sheard,
who was introduced by Paisley in a "Live From the Shed" video April 13
as "Neil from the Hill," gained prominence after he appeared in a video
that called for bikers to come to Ottawa for an event at the National
War Memorial, organized through a group calling itself Veterans
4 Freedom.
Sheard says the Rolling Thunder event has "always
been about the veterans, always been about the monument" and is meant to
"give back dignity" to veterans.
"The
organizers and speakers are veterans only. That being said it is open
to the public and we can't stop anyone from attending to show their
support for us," according to a statement from the group.
While
it remains unclear what protesters will do in response to the city's
plans to restrict vehicles from coming near the war memorial, Sheard's
original intention was to have motorcycles drive by it before laying a
wreath and letting some people speak. He says the plan is to then leave
the city.
The group's steering committee includes Tom Marazzo, who also gained prominence during the Freedom Convoy
in Ottawa, at times acting as an official spokesperson for protesters.
He has since announced his candidacy in Peterborough-Kawartha for the
far-right Ontario Party.
Freedom Fighters Canada plans alternate events
Sheard
says Rolling Thunder is not associated with an adjacent event planned
to take place on Parliament Hill being organized by a group known as
Freedom Fighters Canada.
That group is promoting Rolling
Thunder on its website. In an April 6 post on its website, the group
wrote "the bikers are coming to Ottawa to peacefully celebrate our
FREEDOM!"
It shared a video of Sheard promoting the event,
writing, "We want all the four wheeler people to know they are welcome
to come and be a part of the welcome party at the Memorial! Park your
vehicle and come down to support our brothers and sisters as they rally
around the War Memorial and lay the wreath."
They somewhat
regularly host "Fringy Friday" events, where flags and posters are waved
in solidarity with "our brothers and sisters standing against the
oppression of the Canadian government."
Freedom Fighters Canada
and its main member, Jerome O'Sullivan, have also regularly helped plan
and organize Freedom Convoy-adjacent events around Parliament Hill,
often promoting related events on its social media channels.
They are currently co-ordinating a march through downtown Ottawa on Friday evening.

Police
have shared the expected route that hundreds of motorcyclists will take
Saturday as one part of the unsanctioned weekend "Rolling Thunder
Ottawa" rally.
The rally has drawn comparisons to the disruptive
Freedom Convoy protest, which took over downtown Ottawa for several
weeks in January and February and has been described many times as an
illegal occupation.
Its
schedule includes Friday evening and Saturday afternoon rallies on
Parliament Hill, a Saturday event at the National War Memorial, a
Saturday ride through the city's streets and a Sunday morning church
service in Vanier.
At
a news conference Thursday morning, acting police chief Steve Bell said
riders are expected to gather Saturday morning at an unspecified site
on Coventry Road before departing around 10:45 a.m.
This
is the route that the Rolling Thunder Ottawa motorcycle rally is
expected to follow on Saturday, April 30, according to Ottawa police. (CBC)
No stopping allowed at War Memorial
The
plan shared with police has them then heading north on the Vanier
Parkway, turning down Montreal Road and making their way over the
Cummings Bridge to Rideau Street, Bell said.
From there, the
ride will turn south on Waller Street, head onto the Mackenzie King
Bridge, roll down Elgin Street and turn east on Laurier Avenue West,
Bell said. They will end by driving down Nicholas Street and exiting
onto Highway 417, he said.
The
entire route will be a no-stopping, no-parking zone, and Bell said
officers will monitor the ride to ensure participants make their way
through the city "safely and expeditiously" with "as little impact as
possible on residents."
Saturday's National War Memorial event
is expected to coincide with the ride, but bikers will not be allowed to
pause at the monument as they pass by, Bell said. The entire route
would skirt the boundaries of the exclusion zone, he noted.
Rally
organizers have now indicated up to 400 motorcyclists will take part,
Bell said, fewer than the 500 to 1,000 the acting chief estimated
earlier this week.
Many would stay in downtown hotels, he said.
He would not estimate how many more protesters would arrive on foot, but
said the plan in place would account for those numbers.
Organizers have also said the demonstrators will depart Ottawa on Sunday, Bell said.

Community concerns taken seriously
Rolling
Thunder Ottawa has aligned itself with groups with various motives,
including a veterans' group aimed at restoring "fundamental rights and
freedoms" and a non-profit dedicated to the "end of all tyrannical bills
and legislation."
The involvement of vehicles, along with its ties to the recent Freedom Convoy have
left many downtown residents on edge, after they went through weeks of
harassment, noise, and road and business closures earlier this year.
Several
of the people charged in connection with the Freedom Convoy have
conditions prohibiting them from being in Ottawa, and Bell said if they
ignore those conditions and appear at the rally they'd face arrest.
"We've
heard the community, and take seriously the concerns raised. You will
see that in all elements of our planning," Bell said.
The city has also announced a bylaw crackdown, with its officers expected to be out enforcing parking rules, limiting vehicle noise and preventing litter.
In
an email Wednesday, the city said Rolling Thunder organizers reached
out April 13 to get a special event permit for Saturday, but the request
was rejected because the city needs at least 28 days to process those
kinds of requests.
Regular pedestrian and vehicle traffic will be permitted within the exclusion zone, and transit is expected to run normally.
Even
with some disruptions and traffic delays likely, Mayor Jim Watson urged
residents to still enjoy the downtown on the weekend and support local
businesses.
"People certainly have the right to protest
peacefully," Watson told Thursday's news conference. "And I want to
emphasize that no illegal activity will be tolerated."

An
Ontario Superior Court justice has denied MPP Randy Hillier's bid to be
allowed in downtown Ottawa, as a bail condition prohibits him from
visiting following charges related to participating in the Freedom
Convoy protest.
Hilllier, who remains an independent MPP for the
riding of Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston, had sought a bail review hearing
to remove the condition barring him from the downtown core of the
nation's capital, aside from meeting his lawyer or attending court.
Hillier
also sought the hearing because he believes another bail condition
limiting his online activity "overly restricts Mr. Hillier's ability to
speak about or support anti-mandate causes on social media or
otherwise," according to his lawyer David Anber.
The
hearing took place on the eve of preparations for a weekend rally in
Ottawa, which doesn't specifically protest COVID-19 rules. Hillier told
CBC News he would not attend any events connected to the rally, which
include planned gatherings on Parliament Hill and at the National War
Memorial.
Anber also told the court he had filed the bail review application before the rally "was even on anyone's radar."
"Randy
[says] he doesn't plan on attending. So we're simply going after those
two conditions because they're overly restrictive for the
circumstances," Anber said.
Justice Hugh McLean still told the
court Thursday afternoon "in the current circumstances" it was
appropriate to keep the bail conditions preventing Hillier from visiting
the city's downtown.
"Your client has, shall we say, an interesting record of not following the law," McLean told Anber.
After
turning himself in on charges related to the convoy protest and
occupation in downtown Ottawa, Hillier was released on bail with
conditions in late March.
In charging Hillier, Ottawa police
said they had complaints "about social media posts and other activities
of an individual" during the so-called Freedom Convoy.
The
charges include assaulting a peace or public officer; two counts of
obstructing or resisting a public officer; one count of obstructing or
resisting someone aiding a public or peace officer; three counts
of counselling an uncommitted indictable offence, two of them considered
mischief; and two counts of mischief or obstructing property exceeding
$5,000.
Hillier denied assaulting an officer, saying he only greeted people "with love and affection and embrace and handshakes."

It's
been two months since police cleared out the trucks and protesters
who'd been occupying the streets around Parliament Hill. Several of the
key figures involved in the convoy protests are in custody or out on
bail, waiting for their trials to begin. Millions in donations have been
seized, repaid or spent, but almost $8 million have not been accounted
for. And many people in Ottawa — and across the country — are still
waiting for answers and accountability.

David Fraser has been following the money and the latest from court. He
fills us in on what we know now about how this protest became so
entrenched.
At a special meeting of the Ottawa Police Services Board a request to appoint 200 RCMP officers and re-appoint a further 631 was approved.
The
re-appointed officers were first given special constable status during
the “Freedom Convoy” protests that took place in Ottawa throughout much
of February.
Ottawa Police are preparing for an event, Rolling Thunder,
which could see protestors flood into Ottawa’s downtown core between
April 29 and 30. Ottawa police said protesters would arrive between
Friday and Saturday.
The chair of the Ottawa Police Services Board, Coun. Eli El-Chantiry, said the protest would be a “convoy of bikers.”
Appointing
RCMP officers does not guarantee they will be used during the protest
but offers the police service flexibility if the situation changes.

“This is one of the new and improved ways we’re looking at
approaching these demonstrations,” Interim Chief Steve Bell told board
members on Wednesday.
To prepare for the event, Ottawa Police will ban vehicles from the
downtown and increase the number of officers patrolling over the
weekend.
RCMP officers must be appointed with special constable status
in order to carry out policing duties in Ottawa, which is under the
jurisdiction of the Ottawa Police Service.

“These appointments ensure that the respective employees can
carry out the full scope of their assigned duties,” a report to the
board explained.
Board members also agreed to delegate authority
to the chair and vice chair to approve new RCMP officers without calling
a full meeting if the need arises through the weekend.
“The
appointment of special constable status for these RCMP employees and the
extension of the existing special constable status from the February
illegal protest will allow them to undertake the full scope of their
duties,” the report added.

SAINT JOHN � There are some tenants who steer away from renting
apartments where eerie spirits lurk from centuries past.
And there are others who might embrace it.
Jason Fillmore is taking a gamble that his latest online advertisement
might lure the latter: people who aren�t afraid of sharing their digs
with a ghost or two.
�Why not?�said Fillmore, chief operating officer and partner with 3D
Property Management. �Some people are into that.�
In an effort to stand out from the 900 Kijiji postings for apartments
in Saint John, Fillmore posted an advertisement for a one-bedroom unit
on Clarendon Street in the north end, blatantly boasting the presence
of ghosts.
�It�s haunted, but the rent is great!� the posting reads.
Click on, and you find that the $600 unit features include a
security-locked entrance, laundry, a fridge, stove and a ghost
(followed by a winking emoticon).
While Fillmore has no actual proof of the supernatural in the
apartment, he says it�s not out of the question.
�It could be haunted. It�s an older building; maybe it is,� he said,
estimating the building owned by people who live out of the province to
be at least 100 years old.�Saint John is an old city, and there are
lots of ghost stories.�
So far there have been no bites, but the ad has led to viewings and
rentals of other properties, he said.
Fillmore�s creative marketing is the latest in a string of ads he has
posted � including one appealing to hypochondriacs who might want to
live near the hospital � as a way to break through the flooded rental
market.
The ploy is not unlike one used by real estate agent Jake Palmer, who
posted a �not haunted� sign � along with many others � at a home that
had been listed on the market on nearby Douglas Avenue for several
months two years ago.
The most recent statistics from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing
Corporation showed Saint John�s October vacancy rate at 11.4 per cent,
a number that has been steadily climbing over recent years and stands
higher than the vacancy rates in Fredericton and Moncton.
�If you go on Kijiji, every single ad looks the same,� Fillmore said.�I
guess the whole idea was pull their attention, pull them in. Then I�ve
got them.�
Claude Gautreau, a senior market analyst with the CMHC in Moncton, said
Saint John�s vacancy rates have been trending higher than those of
other provincial cities for a few years now, possibly because of
outmigration or lack of significant population growth.
While high vacancy rates create a more difficult situation for property
owners trying to make a return on their investment, they make for a
renter�s market, he said.
�If you want to live in a particular area of the city, or if you want a
particular kind of unit, you have a much better chance of finding what
you�re looking for,� he said.
The perfect situation for both renters and landlords is a�balanced
rate,� when both sides can meet their objectives, he said. In Saint
John, such a rate dates back to 2000, when the average vacancy rate was
about six per cent.
Gautreau said he doesn�t expect any big changes in the city�s vacancy
rate as new statistics are released in June, with only a slight
increase or decrease on the horizon.
As for Fillmore, he�ll continue to make the most of the challenging
market.
�It depends on how you look at it,� Fillmore said.�You could get into
what the CMHC is saying with the high vacancy, or you can just make it
work.�
For him, it all comes down to marketing, advertising and offering good
service rather than gimmicks such as a month�s free rent that might end
only in high tenant turnover.
The vacancy rate for units in the 45 buildings his company manages is
actually closer to eight per cent, he said.
�So we�re doing better than average.�

"Jason Fillmore, the company's regional director, declined an
interview with CBC, but sent a statement by email. He specified that
the Canada Homes for Rent does not own the building, but manages it
for "outside investors."
"The rent increase is necessary to maintain and upgrade the building
as it has been neglected for many years and fell in disrepair."
Fillmore said a hot real estate market has been pushing up rents.
"In most cases tenants have lived in properties for over a decade
without a rent increase and paying very low rents in a market that has
increased dramatically," he said. "Unfortunately [past] owners did not
keep up with the increases yearly, forcing the new owners of that
building to do larger rent increases to cover operating costs and
rising cost for materials."
He said the trend has been growing in Canada and has "finally hit New
Brunswick as real estate investors look east to buy properties."

payment. That's what we got. We got a pamphlet. And then, early last
week, that's the letter that I put on Facebook. That's the letter that
I got signed by Jason Fillmore. And we have until December 1st to get
the hell out, or we keep on paying, well, almost double -- 1,150 per
month. I live alone on a pension. I cannot afford this because I get
1,600 dollars. Now take off 1,150 on that. Take off another 150 for my
cable and phone. And then I have my car insurance, my life insurance,
what's going to be left to eat? I have no idea what I'm going to do.
It's cruel, really. I mean, I've never been involved with anything
like this before, never. I was here for the rest of my life. I'll have
to move because there's no way I can pay that. I mean, it's going to
be tough to move because I mean, to hire somebody to move you these
days, it's expensive. I don't know how in the hell I'm going to do it?

An NDP candidate comes forward in Quispamsis

A Quispamsis small businessman is seeking the NDP nomination in the town.
Matt Doherty has lived in Quispamsis for more than 30 years and
launched an IT business in 2006 and is also partner in a property
management company.
In a release, Doherty says it’s time for Quispamsis to have real local
representation.
He adds the NDP is running on a sensible and restrained platform that
will help our community develop.
Doherty lives in Quispamsis with his wife and two sons.
Party will hold leadership convention within six months

New Brunswick NDP Leader Roger Duguay is resigning as party leader
after failing to win a seat in the Sept. 27 election.
Under Duguay's leadership, the New Democratic Party won more than 10
per cent of the vote, more than double the party's showing in the 2006
election.
"Across New Brunswick, even in the face of a Conservative tide, the
NDP showed the biggest gains of all the political parties," Duguay
told a Monday news conference.
But Duguay was unable to win personally in the northeastern riding of
Tracadie-Sheila. The NDP leader spent nearly the entire 32-day
election period campaigning in the riding but still only placed second
to Conservative Claude Landry, who held the seat in the last
legislature.
The NDP attracted roughly 40,000 votes in the Sept. 27 election but
didn't manage to win a seat. The party has been shut out of the
provincial legislature since its former leader, Elizabeth Weir,
resigned in 2005.
Duguay issued a parting challenge to Premier David Alward. The
outgoing NDP Leader said he wants the Progressive Conservative
government to bring forward a system of proportional representation.
The former Bernard Lord government struck a Commission on Legislative
Democracy that recommended a system of proportional representation.
Lord had promised to hold a referendum on the issue, but he was
defeated before having a chance to hold a public vote on the issue.
Alward's Tories did not talk about electoral reform in the recent election.
Duguay won the party's leadership in October 2007. Before entering
politics, Duguay was a school teacher and a priest.
Now that his political career is over, Duguay said he will teach
school in the Acadian peninsula.
2011 leadership convention
The NDP will hold a leadership convention that will take place in the
next six months, according to Dominic Cardy, a party spokesman.
Cardy said the party wants to take advantage of the momentum created
for the party.
"We have a lot of strengths going forward," Cardy said.
"It is sad that Mr. Duguay will not be leading us in the next four
years, but he left the party in good shape."
The Conservatives trounced the ruling Liberals in the September
election. Under Duguay's leadership, the NDP repeatedly attacked the
spending promises made by the more traditional parties.
He said New Brunswick could not afford the promises, and in the
party's television ad, he accused the two parties of driving the
province over a debt cliff.
Alward praised Duguay in a news release on Monday.
"On behalf of the government of New Brunswick, I wish to pay tribute
to Roger Duguay for his proven commitment to public service in our
province," he said.
"Mr. Duguay did a great deal to ensure more people had their views
heard in our society and, ultimately, to strengthen democracy in New
Brunswick. He can be very proud of his legacy as a member, as a
candidate and, for the past three years, as the leader of the NDP."
Party members react
Jason Purdy, a defeated NDP candidate in the Fredericton-Lincoln
riding, said the departing leader would be missed inside the party.
"Roger will definitely be missed by the NDP, he is a very dedicated,
honest and caring individual," Purdy said in a post on Twitter.
Matt Doherty, a defeated NDP candidate in the Quispamsis riding, said
Duguay's leadership should be celebrated considering the challenges he
faced.
"I don't think people will be critical of the fact he didn't win his
seat or any others. What I focus on is the actual success there,"
Doherty said.
"We got the second-highest percentage of the popular vote in the
history of the party in New Brunswick. That speaks volumes to the type
of leader that he was."
Doherty said the outgoing leader will be remembered for the civility
he demonstrated even under the intense glare of an election campaign.
"Roger had an aura of graciousness about him, and you could see it in
the leaders' debates — both the English and the French ones," Doherty
said.
"He is above petty politics. I think we need more of that."
The party will select an interim leader when the executive meets in
late November.

An international expert on democracy has flown all the way from Egypt
to help NDP candidate John Carty campaign in Fredericton.
Dominic Cardy is with a group called The National Democratic
Institute. Its members include such people as former U.S. President
Jimmy Carter. The group's mission is to teach democratic values and
spread democracy around the world.
Cardy has taught about democracy in Algeria, Bangladesh, and Cambodia
during the past few years. When he heard his friend John Carty was
running for office back in his home town of Fredericton, he hopped on
a plane.
"It was a strange experience," Cardy said. "One evening I was watching
the sun go down over the pyramids, and the next evening watched it go
down over Fredericton airport as I came into land."
Cardy is no relation to the NDP candidate. But he loves elections and
loves getting people pumped up about democracy.
Carty the candidate is running against federal Indian Affairs Minister
Andy Scott, Conservative Pat Lynch, Green candidate Philip Duchastel
and independent David Amos. The riding has sent Scott to Ottawa for
the last four elections, despite the best efforts of the other
parties.
Cardy says he doesn't care how tough the race his – he just wants
people to participate in the process. "People have forgotten how
incredibly precious these gifts that our ancestors fought for are and
were just giving them away. It makes me furious when I talk to people
and people just say 'ah there's no point in voting.'"
After election day, Dominic Cardy is flying back home to his wife in
Kathmandu, Nepal. He hopes to leave behind a new Member of Parliament
for Fredericton, his friend John Carty for the NDP.

a test broadcast, as was required by Industry Canada and the CRTC. A
few weeks later, we sent up a temporary studio in an old GMC van at

While some people see this as a two-person race, David Wightman and
Lauren Skabar are hoping to change that.
Running for the Progressive Conservatives, Wightman has had some
catching up to do because of his late entry into the campaign.
Election materials were late arriving, and while Smith-McCrossin and
Casey signs pepper the district, Wightman only recently started
putting his up.
But he's hoping a platform that focuses on health care, along with
community anger directed at the Liberals, will hold him in good stead.
"I think the Liberals have had their turn to try and fix things, and I
think they've only gotten worse," he said, pointing to the growing
wait list of people looking for a family doctor.
While he expresses interest in working on a variety of issues,
Wightman said health care is top of mind for him as a stroke survivor
and because his wife went through treatment for cancer. There are
aspects of the system unique to that region that Wightman hopes to
address.
"One of the things I'd like to see is a better approach to how to get
people to medical appointments that are travelling back and forth
across the [New Brunswick] border," he said.
A time to unite
Skabar is the NDP candidate. Her father, Brian, was elected in the
district in 2009 as part of the NDP's surge to power, but she said
politics was in her blood long before that.
Health care for the area is a major issue, said Skabar, given routine
emergency department closures at community sites and difficulties
getting enough nurses and doctors to the region.
"Until we start incentivizing health-care professionals coming to
places like Cumberland North and our smaller communities, we aren't
going to see any improvements," she said.

>>>>>>>> Justice Webb did not have any time recorded on any files involving

>>>>>>>> Amos while he was a lawyer with Patterson Palmer or Patterson Law.

>>>>>>>> stated in his affidavit dated June 26, 2017 that there is a “true

>>>>>>>> of an American police surveillance wiretap entitled 139” on this

>>>>>>>> He has also indicated that he has “provided a true copy of the CD
>>>>>>>> entitled 139 to many American and Canadian law enforcement
>>>>>>>> authorities
>>>>>>>> and not one of the police forces or officers of the court are
>>>>>>>> willing
>>>>>>>> to investigate it”. Since he has indicated that this is an

>>>>>>>> police surveillance wiretap”, this is a matter for the American law
>>>>>>>> enforcement authorities and cannot create, as Mr. Amos suggests, a
