Present-day politics and division: Have your personal relationships taken a hit?

It’s like everyone, on every issue, is forced to get political and take a side — to be either for or against the current thing and then shout contemptuously at the other side on the internet.

By April 14, 2022

Have any of your personal relationships in recent years been weakened over matters of politics?

I came across this article just the other day. The headline reads:

Canadians becoming more divided over COVID-19 and politics, survey says

To quote, “About 40 per cent of those surveyed said they have reduced contact with friends or family over an argument about the pandemic or politics.”

And this isn’t the first headline I’ve seen very similar to this over the past few years.

I’ve thought about this a lot. Today's level of identity politics and political tribalism is astounding.

I really liked this clip from Bill Maher on the Ben Shapiro Show from a few weeks ago. I think he nails it.

It’s like everyone, on every issue, is forced to get political and take a side — to be either for or against the current thing and then shout contemptuously at the opposing side on the internet. We judge, we label, we generalize, and we attack those we disagree with. Every political disagreement becomes personal.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not at all saying that you shouldn’t be politically outspoken or stand up for your personal convictions. But I am saying that you, and those around you, are far more than your political views — and we should remember to put individuals and relationships over politics.

If we can’t cordially communicate differing ideas and perspectives and engage in open-minded civil discussion, then we can’t get anywhere.

There are good and bad people on both sides of the political divide. You shouldn't hold contempt for someone just because you don't see eye-to-eye on a given social or political issue.

I’m not going hate you just because you think and see differently than I do.

I mean, who wins when that happens?

I suppose my message is: Bring back civil discourse. You are more than your politics. And don’t forget to love your neighbour.

Three key ‘Freedom Convoy’ organizers pull back the curtain on the hopes, tension and infighting that marked the occupation

The movement that became an unprecedented disruption for Canada’s capital faced turbulence and disagreement from the inside, too

Bridgette Belton, James Bauder and Tom Marazzo all played key roles in the Freedom Convoy protest.

Brigitte Belton was never in any of the headlines and, when the “Freedom Convoy” press conferences were given, she flanked the speakers instead of taking the mic herself.

But in what may come as just one little-known fact of many in the story of the convoy’s origins, there’s no doubt the 52-year-old from Wallaceburg, Ont., was among the first to get the headline-grabbing protest rolling — and that she helped keep it going.

She says it amazes her how the movement she started talking about to the selfie camera in the cab of her truck eventually spread to a surge of sentiment that has seemingly come to define populism in Canada today.

“I have never in my life protested ever,” Belton told the Star. “I never thought there was something so serious that I needed to risk my job. Risk my criminal record.”

After the convoy, Belton was not arrested or charged. She remains defiant and sees the work of the convoy as unfinished.

“Am I going to go back to Ottawa? I can’t say I won’t at this point,” she says.

The whole movement raised and lost more than $10 million twice, pulled together a cacophony of populist sentiment from across the country, and subjected the nation’s capital to blaring truck horns and street occupations for a month before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act for the first time in its history. Police arrested 230 people and laid 118 charges related to the event.

By the time bank accounts were frozen and police swept in to clear Ottawa streets of the remaining protesters and vehicles, observers all over the country were left wondering how much of it even had to do with its initial, advertised mission — getting rid of vaccine mandates for truckers and everyone else — and how much of it had become a meeting ground for all manner of quasi-organized anti-government agitating.

The convoy was surely about different things to different people. Three of its organizers, who all came to the movement with different backgrounds and goals, agreed to speak to the Star.

They are Belton, who along with Chris Barber is the reason the convoy was a trucker protest to begin with; James Bauder, who stage-managed the routes across Canada and sees the whole thing as part of his “Canada Unity” movement; and Tom Marazzo, a former military man who tried to take a leadership role when things started to get heated.

Together, they painted an image of a movement marked by massive organizational challenges and a load of internal strife. The organizers agreed that they wanted COVID-19 mandates, including the requirement that truckers be vaccinated to cross the border into Canada, gone for good. But beyond that, ideas clashed and tensions flared within the inner apparatus of the convoy about what they were there for and how far they should go to accomplish their aims.

They came together, but never fully coalesced, and while most plan to continue the work of the convoy they have disparate views of what that work is and how to pursue it.

Chapter one: The truckers

Bridgette Belton, one of the organizers of the Freedom Convoy at her home in Ontario.

Behind the scenes, Belton quietly embodied some of the movement’s roots while watching as it mushroomed into a populist coalition far beyond her — or anyone’s — single grasp. She represented, at least in its earliest days, everything the convoy was said to stand for.

Belton is a trucker. She’s unvaccinated and unable to do her regular work crossing the U.S. border because of it. Through the pandemic and before it, she has been no fan of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and lays blame for the mandates on him more than any other politician. She remained out of the spotlight while disparate groups with different agendas hitched their trucks, RVs and tractors to the convoy coalition.

Even though she calls the attempts to keep so many disparate groups on the same page “one of the most bizarre things I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Belton said she’s proud of what she views as the convoy’s best parts.

“The best thing that came out from Ottawa was I was no longer alone,” she said. “I’ve been told I’m a horrible person for not taking a vaccine that I didn’t believe in. I saw that I wasn’t alone in that.”

Although Belton was not clearly a spokesperson for the movement, every other organizer who spoke to the Star recognized that she and Barber together formed the core of the committee organizing the actual truckers who came to protest.

(The Star reached out to Barber, who was arrested at the Ottawa protests and released on bail the next day. He faces four charges related to the protests, including counselling mischief and to obstruct police. Barber declined to comment for this story, citing court conditions for his bail, but he suggested the Star reach Belton.)

Here’s the untold story of how the beginning of the convoy came about, from Belton’s perspective.

When she complained about the impending trucker vaccine mandate to the couple of hundred people she usually reached on her TikTok account in January, a sympathetic trucker from Swift Current, Sask., named Chris Barber messaged her and they formed a friendship.

With Belton’s story and Barber’s rising TikTok fame (he made deadpan, self-described “trolling” TikToks about trucking life and his dislike of Trudeau’s government), the pair started sharing the idea of a truck convoy to protest mandates. On Jan. 1, Belton started sharing what looked like a standard-sized poster reading “CONVOY TO END MANDATES” on her own TikTok, with Barber promoting the idea, too. They wanted to target roads along the border with slow rolling trucks, starting Jan. 23.

As that idea gained attention on TikTok, others took notice.

“When we started this, you have to remember, it was Chris and myself,” Belton said. “Then there was Canada Unity that came in, then there was Pat King that came in with his friends. And, you know, I mean before you know it there are a thousand groups within the one group.”

Belton said she left Ottawa before the police enforcement happened to avoid arrest and take care of her dog, who was with her. She said her bank accounts were also not frozen. Belton credits the fact that police didn’t seem interested in her due to the quiet role she played relative to another female organizer: fundraiser and spokesperson Tamara Lich.

“It seems like because of all the stuff that surrounded Tamara, I was kind of put in the background, which was OK,” Belton said. “Because being in the background, I got work done. I got stuff done. And I didn’t have as much notoriety or fame as she did.”

Belton’s main role, she said, was organizing truckers themselves, helping them to get supplies and answering their calls at any time of day.

One of the earliest meetings showcasing what would become the mixed bag of convoy leaders came on Jan. 13, on a livestream hosted by King, a right-wing social media personality interested in conspiracy theories and anti-government protesting.

The meeting opened with a video of a long-haired man in jeans and a T-shirt singing a kind of love song to freedom on the beach, and had a handful of people present — including King, Barber, Belton and James Bauder, who had been involved in the 2019 United We Roll convoy for oil and gas before going on to start his own group.

All talked about the convoy as a nascent but invigorating idea, joking with one another and discussing plans for more than an hour.

It was a show of cohesion that wouldn’t last.

Chapter two: The convoy

James Bauder, who founded the group Canada Unity, was instrumental in organizing convoy routes but departed from the rest of the organizers once the trucks were in Ottawa.

James Bauder would become one of the most recognizable figures in the convoy, not because he was at the centre of press conferences (he is quick to point out that he never was), but because he brought organizational help — things such as maps, schedules and chains of communication — to a motley group.

It was Bauder’s website, Canada Unity, that became the key organizational tool for those wanting to join the convoy, laying out route maps and displaying the phone numbers for convoy contacts from across the country. Bauder called it “Operation Bearhug” and reused organizational tactics of United We Roll and other smaller convoys.

Bauder himself remained relatively quiet throughout the month that trucks and other protesters stayed parked in Ottawa. But he is also the author of one of the infamous documents associated with the protest: the Canada Unity Memorandum of Understanding.

He had attempted to deliver the MOU to Senate officials in December of 2021 during an earlier anti-restrictions convoy and later posted the document to his website — the same website where all the route maps and convoy contacts were posted.

Written in legalese and bizarrely addressed to the Senate and Governor General — but not the government of Canada — the MOU was seen by many as evidence of the convoy’s nefarious intentions. Bauder, who has called COVID-19 restrictions a “crime against humanity” and “treason” on his website and social media, says he believed the pseudolegal document could be used as a direct appeal to Canada’s upper house and head of state.

The document, which asks that those two bodies intervene to end federal COVID-19 mandates and, failing that, trigger a referendum to launch a new election, sounded not just outlandish (the Governor General and Senate do not have this power) but potentially insurrectionist, prompting some to equate the document with a written intention by Canada Unity — and therefore the convoy as a whole — to overthrow the government.

Jody Thomas, Trudeau’s national security adviser, repeated that claim, saying there was “no doubt” protesters wanted to overthrow the government.

In an interview with the Star, Bauder said that the MOU was broadly misinterpreted and that he never wrote about or held intentions to try to overthrow the government. Still, he says, he stands by the document and doesn’t regret releasing it. He talks about the MOU like a kind of jacked-up petition that, had it been signed by the five million Canadians he was aiming for, would have been impossible for the government to ignore. He said the first priority of the document was just to apply pressure to lift the mandates, and believes that it could have been used to compel the Governor General to trigger a referendum on mandates if the government refused to lift them (the document got about 350,000 signatures before he took it down, according to the counter on Bauder’s website).

What Bauder does regret, he says, are some of the alliances he made in the early days of the convoy when he got on phone calls like the one on Jan. 13 with King, Barber and Belton.

“Lessons learned,” he said. “Be careful who you partner with.”

“I have learned so much and been so deceived. With respect to receiving those phone calls, I wish that I could have gone back and said no.”

From the earliest days of the convoy, Bauder’s aims were related but separate from those of the Freedom Convoy 2022 organizers, according to both himself and the other organizers. Even though his website was instrumental in organizing convoy routes, Bauder says he was never a part of the Freedom Convoy 2022, which later formalized itself as a not-for-profit organization with the help of lawyer Keith Wilson.

Instead, Bauder’s project was (and still is) Operation Bearhug, which he sees as an ongoing movement using tactics such as slow-roll convoys, rallies and “mask-free shopping” events in an attempt to rally support against restrictions and for his MOU, which he still believes could be a tool to pressure the government into ending the last of the mandates.

He’s currently working on a version of Operation Bearhug in British Columbia, with a smaller convoy of vehicles camping on a private property in Delta, near Vancouver. They’re planning a variety of protests as well as lawsuits, and dreaming of eventually leveraging the movement into its own political party.

Police in Delta said they haven’t had any issues with the group gathering in B.C. so far.

Here’s where Bauder’s and Belton’s stories diverge.

From Bauder’s point of view, the Ottawa convoy was a part of his Operation Bearhug, with Belton and Barber signing onto his pre-existing plan. He said he felt that way until some truckers got to Ottawa a day earlier than scheduled, began occupying the streets of Ottawa under the encouragement of people like Pat King, who proposed blockades in front of politicians’ residences and said on a livestream: “This is so much fun, we have all of Ottawa gridlocked.”

Bauder said that’s when he decided to “step back” from the core organizing committee, while Belton and Barber say he was always at arm’s length from their efforts.

The money raised and who had control over it was another source of contention. The $10 million raised first through GoFundMe and then through the Christian charity site GiveSendGo was being managed by Tamara Lich under the direction of the Freedom Convoy 2022 team: truckers such as Belton and Barber.

No one who spoke to the Star had any issues with Lich, who was described neutrally as either the fundraiser or the accountant.

Every organizer reached also said that even though they were upset the money raised didn’t go to protesters’ expenses, they’re glad the fundraising platforms ultimately returned the money to donors instead of donating the funds somewhere else.

But Bauder saw the fact that the fundraisers were under control of those other leaders as evidence that his movement had been “co-opted,” perhaps for political purposes. He disliked Lich’s affiliation with the Maverick Party, the western separatist ideas of which he sees as antithetical to his “Canada Unity” movement.

He didn’t like that “Freedom Convoy 2022” seemed to be forming as a separate entity from Operation Bearhug, his brainchild. Freedom Convoy seemed to Bauder to be loosely affiliated with separatist parties, while he saw his whole effort as a “unity” movement.

“It just disgusted me deeply inside to see egos, greed and politics jump in and co-opt our movement,” Bauder said.

As for King, Bauder saw him initially as someone who could publicize what they were doing, but that ultimately his livestreams encouraging protesters to stay on the streets and occupy “did a lot of damage to the movement.”

It is clear that hard feelings remain about King’s style and approach to the movement.

“We’re like, this is interesting stuff we were doing behind the scenes while everybody’s making a fool of themselves with their live feeds and Pat King there, eh,” Bauder said. “I tell you, personally, I think he should stay in jail.”

All the organizers eventually distanced themselves from King, with Lich being one of the people clarifying that the Freedom Convoy fundraiser on GoFundMe had nothing to do with King.

King was arrested as part of the Ottawa protests and remains in jail facing 10 charges, including mischief, counselling mischief and intimidation. The Star has reached out to a lawyer who has spoken for King in some of his court appearances for comment but did not hear back.

Belton denied Bauder’s implication that she and Barber were “co-opting” the movement for political purposes.

“The convoy was not there for political purposes. I said it in interviews, that if people were coming for political purposes, they needed to go home,” Belton said. “We were not there as a political party. We were there to have the mandates dropped.”

And she downplayed Bauder’s role.

“He’s a nice man … but he needs to feel that he is the leader of the pack,” she said. “Which is not the truth.”

Chapter three: The occupation

Tom Marazzo says he was trying to hold disparate elements of the Freedom Convoy together.

None of the organizers the Star spoke to on or off the record denied the reality that the convoy, whatever it started out as, became illegal when it parked on Ottawa’s streets and occupied them.

They did offer some explanations or deferrals of responsibility. Belton said they wanted the trucks to keep moving or park only in front of Parliament. Bauder said he never wanted protesters to stay parked in town at all.

But the person who became responsible for sorting all of this out was a newer addition to the organizational crew. Neither an original “Freedom Convoy 2022” organizer, nor a Canada Unity organizer, retired Canadian Forces captain Tom Marazzo says he came onto the convoy scene as an independent volunteer and ended up taking on “the biggest leadership challenge of my entire life.”

“I wasn’t signing people’s paycheques. Nobody had to listen to anything that I had to say,” Marazzo told the Star shortly after the protest ended.

In the end, sometimes they did and sometimes they didn’t.

Marazzo appeared suddenly on the convoy scene on Feb. 7 as the movement’s new spokesperson, when he gave an impassioned speech about how he’d meet with any elected official from any party, since Trudeau had repeatedly refused a meeting (some critics interpreted this as an expression of support by Marazzo for Bauder’s MOU, which Marazzo says he has never read).

Marazzo’s role with the convoy, as he describes it, was to speak on behalf of the group of organizers, and to try to work at a high level with police and public officials to keep the protest running smoothly. He was recognized by other convoy organizers for his affiliation with the Police on Guard group, a collection of retired and current police and military members who opposed vaccine mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions. He says his military experience is why he was asked to take on a leadership role.

It was a balancing act. Marazzo admits there were illegal occupations happening, but also asserts they had a right to keep protesting and wanted to make sure that could happen. Marazzo said he quickly realized how many different organizations had attached themselves to the convoy and the challenge he would have not only to simplify the message, but to try to direct traffic when so many of the people who had shown up had their own pre-existing affiliations.

“I remember being in a meeting with various members of different organizations and I said, ‘Listen, we are not Canada Unity, we’re not Taking Back our Freedoms, we are not part of any of the social media darlings that are going around and saying all these things,’” he said. “’We are here for the Freedom Convoy 2022. We’re here to end the mandates.’”

Marazzo said that, to Bauder’s credit, Canada Unity did seem to go off and do “their own thing,” reducing the noise within the core of central organizers.

Getting everyone on the same page didn’t always work, especially on the roads themselves, where Marazzo said he knew loads of people were parked illegally and the top priority for a while became making sure emergency lanes remained open everywhere.

“There were a lot of people there that, you know, were adamant that they weren’t going to go home until these federal mandates were lifted. They didn’t want to use violence, but they’re like: ‘No, I’m doing this. Maybe I’m illegally parked, fine. I’ll accept that,’” he said. “There was a whole group of truckers that showed up the day before the main convoy arrived and they took positions all around that corner. And so this was a movement of several different people from all across Canada that came together and basically found a parking spot in Ottawa.”

Belton arrived early in Ottawa, on the Friday, as did King. A pickup truck also drove through Ottawa on that day waving a confederate flag which was quickly denounced by Barber, who led the group of trucks that arrived Saturday, at the time.

Marazzo described working with Barber, Belton and Lich, as well as other former service members such as Danny Bulford most closely.

Jason LaFace, an Ontario organizer who spoke with the Star after the convoy and had volunteered with Canada Unity, said that at some point in Ottawa COVID-19 went around. LaFace said he was tested and tested positive.

“When I was in Ottawa, there’s a lot of us who believe that we got sprayed on the first weekend we were there because there was some type of aerosol in the air,” he said, without elaborating.

COVID-19 does spread through aerosols, but it is transmitted from aerosols given off by people when they talk, eat and breathe.

The organizer, who initially worked with Bauder, also said that regardless of its intentions, the MOU became too much of a distraction.

“To be honest with you, I would have never even brought (the MOU) to light. I would have just went down there protested, protested properly,” LaFace said.

Marazzo described one circumstance in which he said he worked with officials from the city of Ottawa on a plan to move trucks away from the downtown. News of that deal was leaked Feb. 13 and it never came to fruition. Marazzo says it might have, if only he had time to explain it fully to protesters before they read about it online and dug their heels in.

A representative for the mayor’s office wouldn’t confirm that Marazzo was the person in meetings with city officials.

As it happened, the occupation continued and police cleared the protests Feb. 18. Marazzo was there, watching, and sarcastically cheering, he said, the officers doing the enforcing, but clearing out of the way himself before he was arrested. He had hoped the police were on the side of the convoy and wouldn’t make them go home in this way.

But when he got home, he was grateful to be there, but furious at his bank for freezing his accounts because of his connection to the protests.

“I don’t really know what is next. I’ll be involved in the convoy until I needed and, if I’m not needed, I’ll go back to my life,” he told the Star shortly after the arrests happened.

On Monday, he announced he would be running for Derek Sloan’s new populist party, the Ontario Party, in the next provincial election.

LaFace said he’s running with the Ontario Party, too, and that he wants to tackle the homelessness crisis.

“I’m going to run for provincial (office) here in Ontario because we need change,” he said. “We should be able to go into government and resolve problems together. You know, and get them done instead of dragging them on for decades.”

Belton expressed no political aspirations, but said she’s still using her voice to argue against mandates, especially since she was not arrested and does not face bail conditions as others do.

Bauder has already moved his attention toward British Columbia, organizing convoys (that won’t be occupations, he says) in Vancouver and Victoria while vaccine passports remain in place.

And as pandemic restrictions lift across the country, the organizers of the convoy are trying to make sense of what the alliances they formed during those weeks of sustained protest now mean.

For Belton, she’s still waiting to be allowed to cross the border and figures that, one way or another, she’ll be protesting until the mandate gets lifted.

“If you’re vaccinated, you can cross both ways,” she said. “I’m still angry. And until it gets fixed, I have no choice. I have to stand up.”

Representatives for "Freedom Convoy 2022" and the ongoing protests in Ottawa, Ontario spoke to the media on Thursday afternoon.

One of the principal organizers of the Canada-wide protests, Tamara Leach told the media that the protests in Ottawa will continue until demonstrators see a "clear plan" for the "elimination" of all COVID-19 mandates and restrictions across Canada.

Daniel Bulford - a former RCMP officer and current spokesperson for the "Freedom Convoy 2022" protests - says he has "very reliable information" that nobody directly associated with the protest has been arrested or charged by police, despite reports of multiple arrests relating to the ongoing trucker protests in the nation's capital.

And Keith Wilson, an attorney representing the trucker protesters in Ottawa, confirmed to the media that GoFundMe continues to hold the "bulk" of the money donated over recent days and weeks to the trucker protest movement as it conducts "heightened" diligence to determine where the money is going or what is is intended for.

GoFundMe said Wednesday it has paused and is reviewing the fundraiser for Canada’s trucker convoy that has raised over $10 million to date.

A warning that the fundraiser is “under review” has been posted to its page and donation buttons and a list of previous donors have been removed.

MPP Rick Nicholls joins Ontario party

Nicholls ousted from PC caucus in August over refusal to get vaccinated against COVID-19

Rick Nicholls had been sitting as an independent since August, when he was ousted from the Progressive Conservative caucus for refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

"My reason for joining the Ontario Party was pretty straightforward," Nicholls told CBC News. "I am a conservative. However, having said that, I became very much disenchanted with the movement and the direction that the Ford government is going."

Nicholls said he got an opportunity to speak with Ontario Party representatives and he "liked what they stood for."

"They're pro-family, they're pro liberty," he said. "That was one of the main reasons why I chose to attach my name to them and join the party."

The Ontario Party was founded in 2018, and former Conservative MP Derek Sloan is the current leader. In a news release, Sloan pitched the party as an alternative to "the four left-wing parties" — referring to the Greens, NDP, Liberals and the Progressive Conservatives.

Nicholls' switch makes him the party's first sitting member at Queen's Park.

Nicholls said despite what happened with the PC party and posts he made online saying the COVID-19 vaccine was unsafe, he's not anti-vaccination.

"I didn't think that this particular vaccination was safe," he said Wednesday. "I have all my other vaccines."

The consensus among medical experts is that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.

Nicholls said he didn't think enough was known about the COVID-19 vaccine at the time, and therefore he decided not to get it.

"It's, you know, my choice," he said. "I'm not adverse to anyone who has chosen to get the vaccine."

"If someone chooses to get a vaccine, OK," Nicholls said. "But if they choose not to, OK."

"But let's have the respect for both parties."

Nicholls also said he had no concerns over Ontario Party leader Sloan, who was expelled from the Conservative Party after accepting a donation from Paul Fromm, who describes himself as a white nationalist.

"I think it was a case where all this, I think, came to light ... after the leadership race, Nicholls said. "I know that Derek Sloan tried to defend himself, but his his defence fell on deaf ears."

Sloan also faced criticism for his remarks about Canada's chief public health officer Dr. Theresa Tam.

Nicholls said he's currently helping the Ontario Party with policy development, but hasn't decided if he'll run again in the next election.

He said he expects to make that decision by mid-February.

Ford ousts MPP from caucus over open letter pushing for end to COVID-19 lockdown

York Centre MPP Roman Baber posted letter online this morning

In a statement issued Friday morning, Ford called the comments from the two-page letter "irresponsible," saying Baber will not be allowed to seek re-election as a PC member.

"By spreading misinformation he is undermining the tireless efforts of our frontline health-care workers at this critical time, and he is putting people at risk," Ford said. "I will not jeopardize a single Ontarian's life by ignoring public health advice.

"There is no room for political ideology in our fight against COVID-19 — rather, our response has been and will always be driven by evidence and data." Ford said.

"Furthermore, Mr. Baber has put himself ahead of his PC Caucus team, who have worked around the clock for months to support and protect the people of Ontario through this public health crisis."

In Baber's letter, posted on Twitter today, the MPP argues that while the virus is real, "the fear of COVID is exaggerated.

"Lockdowns are deadlier than Covid. I wrote a respectful letter to Premier Ford, asking to end the lockdown," he said in a tweet.

Baber wrote that the virus is not as deadly as first thought and claimed Ontario's hospital capacity is "better than pre-pandemic." So far, more than 5,200 Ontarians have lost their lives to the virus.

In response, the Ministry of Health circulated a fact sheet disputing or outright debunking many of the central claims in Baber's letter. You can read the full text of the ministry's response at the bottom of this story.

CMHA says it 'unequivocally' supports lockdown measures

Moreover, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) issued its own statement, saying that Baber "mischaracterized" its research on the connection between the pandemic and "suicidal ideation" among adults in the country.

"At a time when so many Ontarians are struggling, we are disappointed that the MPP has for political purposes misconstrued statistics about the sensitive subject of suicidal ideation," said Camille Quenneville, CEO of the organization.

"We unequivocally support provincial lockdown measures to protect the health and safety of Ontarians and to help ease the monumental burden our front-line health care workers are facing every day," the statement continued.

Baber's claims come as provincial officials and health experts alike have warned that Ontario's health-care system is on the brink of being overwhelmed.

The province began warning hospitals to prepare for the transferal of patients across and out of regions just over a week ago, and is now telling ICU doctors across Ontario to prepare to use critical care triage to determine who will receive life-saving care when ICU resources are limited.

"The public needs to understand they're at risk of not getting the care they need," Dr. Michael Warner, medical director of critical care at Michael Garron Hospital, told CBC News Thursday.

Warner said implementing these criteria would mean that not every patient who needs critical care — related to COVID-19 or not — would get that critical care if triage comes into effect.

"It makes me very uncomfortable, it's morally distressing and it's terrible for patients," he said.

In a series of tweets posted later this morning, Baber said he doesn't regret "speaking out for millions of lives and livelihoods decimated by public health" and that he "couldn't watch the suffering anymore."

He called Ford's move to turf him from caucus a regretful decision "since many colleagues agree with me."

2,998 new COVID-19 cases, record-high testing

Meanwhile, Ontario reported another 2,998 cases of COVID-19 this morning, as well 100 additional deaths of people with the illness.

The further deaths are the most recorded on a single day since the pandemic began, though the Ministry of Health said that 46 occurred "earlier in the pandemic" and were included today due to a "data cleaning initiative" by the Middlesex-London Health Unit, but offered no further details.

The previous single-day high came on Jan. 7, 2021, when 89 deaths were reported. Ontario's official death toll is now 5,289.

Today's new cases include 800 in Toronto, 618 in Peel Region and 250 in York Region.

Other public health units that saw double- or triple-digit increases were:

  • Waterloo Region: 161
  • Niagara Region: 153
  • Windsor-Essex: 148
  • Hamilton: 138
  • Ottawa: 133
  • Durham Region: 113
  • Halton Region: 81
  • Simcoe Muskoka: 73
  • Middlesex-London: 61
  • Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph: 51
  • Lambton: 36
  • Eastern Ontario: 27
  • Brant County: 25
  • Huron Perth: 20
  • Southwestern: 19
  • Chatham-Kent: 18
  • Haldimand-Norfolk: 18
  • Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge: 13

(Note: All of the figures used in this story are found on the Ministry of Health's COVID-19 dashboard or in its Daily Epidemiologic Summary. The number of cases for any region may differ from what is reported by the local public health unit, because local units report figures at different times.)

The new cases come as Ontario's network of labs processed a record-high 76,472 test samples for the novel coronavirus and reported a test positivity rate of 4.6 per cent, the lowest it has been in nearly three weeks.

The seven-day average of new daily cases dropped to 3,273, while the number of active cases provincewide fell for a fourth straight day to 28,825.

The number of people with COVID-19 in hospitals decreased by 10, down to 1,647. Of those, 387 were being treated in intensive care, one fewer than yesterday, and 280 required a ventilator to breathe.

Another 15,609 doses of vaccines were administered yesterday, the province said. A total of 174,630 shots have been given out so far in Ontario, and 17,094 people have been fully vaccinated with both doses.

The federal government said Friday that global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer will temporarily reduce shipments of its vaccine to Canada because it is pausing some production lines at its facility in Puurs, Belgium, to expand long-term manufacturing capacity.

"Pfizer believes that by the end of March it will be able to catch up, such that we will be on track for the total committed doses for Q1," Public Services and Procurement Minister Anita Anand said, referring to the first quarter of the calendar year.

In a statement, Ford said the province is "evaluating" the possible impact of the news.

"We will adjust as necessary, recognizing the fact that Ontario will soon have a baseline capacity to vaccinate nearly 40,000 people a day with the ability to triple or quadruple this capacity with notice," the statement said.

"I know the federal government is working to secure more supply and when they are able to deliver more vaccines, Ontario will be ready to administer them."

Independent Ontario MPP Roman Baber to enter Conservative party leadership race

Baber was barred from running for the party in Ontario's election in June

Roman Baber will launch his campaign Wednesday evening, and says he considers himself to be the underdog in the party's contest, competing against well-known federal Conservatives like Pierre Poilievre and Leslyn Lewis.

Former Quebec premier Jean Charest is also planning to enter the race Thursday.

Baber sits as an Independent MPP for the Toronto riding of York Centre after Ontario Premier Doug Ford booted him from his Progressive Conservative government in January 2021 over publicly calling for an end to the lockdown that was in place at the time to stem the spread of COVID-19.

He was also barred from running for the party in Ontario's election in June.

Both Poilievre and Lewis have been opposing vaccination mandates and health restrictions that shutter businesses and force residents to stay inside, but Baber says what sets him apart is the fact he did so first.

"I don't believe there's anyone in the race who was willing to speak out against lockdowns or vaccine passports until recently," he told The Canadian Press.

"I did not hesitate to speak out against lockdowns and mandates and passports when it was politically incorrect and when it was challenging politically to do so."

Baber says he supports "voluntary vaccination" and is fully immunized, but has not received his third booster dose.

Mandatory vaccination policies were a source of tension between former Conservative leader Erin O'Toole and some members of his caucus, as well as party supporters.

O'Toole tried to strike a balance between promoting vaccination against COVID-19, while also saying he respects people's ability to control their own health choices.

That position exposed him to criticism from fellow Conservatives who wanted him to more forcefully defend the rights of people to remain unvaccinated while others, including the federal Liberals, slammed him for not being able to say if all 118 of his MPs were double-dosed.

Baber finalizing campaign team

Baber says he believes lockdowns will be remembered as a failure of public policy and sees the pandemic response as tied to "cancel culture and political correctness."

As an immigrant born in the former Soviet Union who moved to Canada at 15, he says he wants to stand up to cancel culture and "restore Canada's democracy," which in his view "has been somewhat eroded, with censorship, with mandates, with invocation of the Emergencies Act."

In terms of mounting a campaign, Baber expressed confidence in being able to pay the $300,000 required by the party to enter the race and was finalizing a campaign team.

When it comes to growing the party, which it must do in areas such as the Greater Toronto Area if it hopes to form government, Baber says as an urban representative he feels Conservatives should talk more about transit, housing and health care.

And as for what kind of conservative he considers himself to be, Baber says he's a "democratic conservative."

"I believe that we must commit to respect basic democracy and to the difference of opinion within our own Conservative party — and I speak from experience."

Durham PC MPP stripped of legislative role for misrepresenting vaccination status

Two PC MPPs have medical exemptions

One of Premier Doug Ford's caucus members has been stripped of her parliamentary assistant role for misrepresenting her COVID-19 vaccination status.

Government house leader Paul Calandra says in a statement that Lindsey Park will no longer serve as parliamentary assistant to the attorney general.

Calandra says he recently learned Park "misrepresented" her vaccination status.

Ford has said that all members of his Progressive Conservative caucus must be vaccinated, and he removed longtime Chatham-Kent-Leamington representative Rick Nicholls for refusing to get vaccinated.

However, Calandra says Park will remain in caucus because she has provided a medical exemption.

Park, who represents Durham, is Ford's second caucus member with a medical exemption, along with Scarborough Centre representative Christina Mitas.

BREAKING: Durham MPP Lindsey Park resigns from Ontario PC Party caucus

Lindsey Park, Member of Provincial Parliament for the riding of Durham, has resigned from the Ontario Progressive Conservative caucus.

The Ontario PC Party demoted Park on October 1, alleging that she "misrepresented her vaccination status" after the party implemented a mandatory COVID-19 vaccination policy for all caucus members.

In a written statement posted to Twitter, Park denies these allegations, accusing the party of issuing a "false statement" and asserting that she obtained a valid medical exemption to vaccination from her doctor.

It looks as if the Ontario Party will be represented in our riding during the upcoming provincial election.

Tom Marazzo announced over the weekend on Twitter he would be running in Peterborough-Kawartha.

Marazzo was a spokesperson during the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa and is also a former Canadian military member.

He will be running against PC incumbent Dave Smith and Liberal Greg Dempsey – no candidates have been named for the NDP or Greens.

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, March 24th, 2020

Cambridge — This afternoon, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice
approved an urgent request from Jim Karahalios to consider a Notice of
Application seeking a variety of relief including a declaration that
his disqualification from the Conservative Leadership Race was
invalid.

"Five appointed and unelected individuals, have attempted to hijack
democracy by removing my name from the ballot in the Conservative
Leadership Race.  Under the Party's Constitution and the Leadership
Rules, these individuals neither had the grounds nor the authority to
disqualify me.  Their decision was politically motivated as my
candidacy was increasingly becoming a threat to Stop the Red Tory
Coronation of Erin O'Toole or Peter MacKay," said Karahalios.

The Application argues the relief should be granted for three reasons:
1. the disqualification was done in bad faith; 2. The disqualification
was unlawful because Karahalios did not violate any of the Leadership
Rules and the Party officials who ordered the disqualification had no
authority to sanction candidates who have not violated the Rules or to
disqualify any candidate in any circumstance; and 3. The
disqualification offended the principles of natural justice and
procedural fairness.

Karahalios added, "Our campaign was the third to hit the ballot
requirements of $300,000 in donations and 3,000 verified signatures.
We are the best option for conservatives who want to stop
establishment Red Tories Erin O'Toole and Peter MacKay.  First, the
Red Tory establishment attempted to derail my candidacy by attacking
my character and reputation in the media and then by depriving us of
the ability to campaign with the Party's membership list.  When that
failed, their only other option was to unlawfully and undemocratically
remove my name from the ballot."

As a distinct issue, the Application alleges that more than $300,000
in donations paid to the Conservative Fund with a direction to be
applied to Karahalios's campaign, have been misappropriated.  It also
alleges that Party officials have ignored Karahalios's requests to
transfer the contributions to Karahalios's campaign, thus depriving
him the ability to pay campaign expenses in accordance with federal
campaign finance law.  As an alternative remedy request, the
Application asks that in the event the Court decides not to overturn
Karahalios's disqualification, that the Party and Fund be ordered to
immediately transfer all contributions to Karahalios's campaign
account so he can proceed with paying off his expenses.  The
Application reads, "the Party keeping any portion of the Directed
Contributions in addition to Mr. Karahalios being disqualified would
result in a double penalty being applied to Mr. Karahalios's candidacy
..."

Karahalios concluded, "On Sunday, during a meeting of National
Council, attempts to discuss the status of my candidacy were deemed as
'out of order.'  Our only other option was to go to Court.  We expect
a hard-fought battle but legal precedents have shown the Courts will
not allow violations of Party Constitutions and Leadership Rules, bad
faith Party decisions, or unfair processes to stand. We are hoping the
Court will order party officials to follow their own Leadership Rules
and ensure a free, fair, and democratic election takes place.
Anything short of this will result in a fixed election and represent a
travesty of Canada's democratic system."

Additional Information:

Karahalios built support from grassroots conservatives as a result of
his movements to Axe the Carbon Tax, Take Back Our PC Party, Free Your
Policy, and other political initiatives centering around advocacy for
adherence to fair democratic processes within the Conservative Party
of Canada and the Ontario PC Party.

He was sued by the Ontario PC Party in 2017 under the leadership of
Patrick Brown in an attempt to silence him.  Karahalios won when a
judge ruled the suit was a SLAPP - strategic litigation against public
participation.

In November of 2018, Karahalios ran for Ontario PC Party president in
an election he alleges was rigged with more ballots being cast than
voters who voted.  The matter is now in court.

MPP Hillier granted bail as he faces 9 charges related to Ottawa convoy protest

Charges include assaulting and obstructing officers, 4 mischief counts

Ontario MPP Randy Hillier released on bail, charged in Ottawa convoy protest

Duration 2:02
Randy Hillier, an independent member of the Ontario Legislature, was released on bail with conditions after he turned himself into police for charges related to the Ottawa convoy protest. He faces a number of charges including assault, obstructing or resisting a police officer and mischief. 2:02

After turning himself in on charges related to the convoy protest and occupation in downtown Ottawa, Randy Hillier was released on bail with conditions Monday.

Ottawa police charged the Independent Lanark-Frontenac-Kingston MPP, saying they had complaints "about social media posts and other activities of an individual" during the so-called Freedom Convoy.

The charges include assaulting a peace or public officer, two counts of obstructing or resisting a public officer, one count of obstructing or resisting someone aiding a public or peace officer, three counts of counselling an uncommitted indictable offence, two of them considered mischief, and two counts of mischief or obstructing property exceeding $5,000.

Hillier surrendered at Ottawa police headquarters Monday morning. Before he walked in, he told reporters he was doing so after getting a call from police on Sunday.

During his court appearance Monday, the Crown alleged Hillier used his shoulder and hip to check a Parliamentary Protective Services officer out of the way after removing a metal gate, as part of an effort to overwhelm protective services in downtown Ottawa during the weeks-long occupation.

Earlier in the day, before surrendering outside police headquarters, Hillier denied assaulting an officer, saying he only greeted people "with love and affection and embrace and handshakes.

"Unless handshakes or warm embraces are now considered assault, I have no idea," he said.

'Your posting on social media poses a substantial risk'

A consent release for Hillier had largely been agreed upon by his lawyer and Crown prosecutor Tim Wightman prior to the court proceeding.

The eastern Ontario provincial politician put up $10,000 against his bail. A surety put up $25,000 to ensure Hillier abides by his bail conditions, which includes avoiding the general area of downtown Ottawa and avoiding contact with convoy organizers.

As part of his bail conditions, he is also unable to post on social media about the "Freedom Convoy" and anti-vaccine or mask mandates.

In her decision to release Hillier, Justice of the Peace Louise Logue said it was clear he has a substantial following on social media and "your posting on social media poses a substantial risk."

She said his bail restrictions would not stop him from performing his duties as an elected member of the legislature.

There were calls for Hillier's arrest in February, when he encouraged people to "keep calling" 911 after Ottawa police warned people to stop calling emergency lines to complain about police clearing streets.

Hillier faces other charges for breaking COVID-19 pandemic rules, and he said Monday he's facing about 25 charges for various COVID protests. The Crown said there were six provincial files against him in Ontario, accrued for alleged violations of the Re-opening of Ontario Act in several cities.

Earlier this month, Hillier said he's not running for re-election in June in the seat he's held since 2007.

What you need to know to vote in Durham
The provincial election campaign officially kicks off on May 2
Kristen Calis
DurhamRegion.com
Tuesday, April 26, 2022

From a new smartphone app to a longer advance poll period, Elections
Ontario is pulling out all the stops to ensure voting goes as smoothly
as possible for the upcoming election.

“Our role is really to ensure that everyone Ontario knows when, how
and what they need to do to vote,” said Ontario’s chief electoral
officer Greg Esesnsa on his visit to Oshawa on April 20.

Essensa's been stopping in municipalities across the province to meet
with staff and help them gear up for the June 2 election.

ADVANCE POLLS

New this election will be 10 days of advance voting.

“This now means we have the most advance poll sites in the country,”
Essensa said.

Traditionally, 90 per cent of people vote on election day, and this
will allow some extra time. He said the voter turnout is around 57 per
cent.

COVID-19 SAFETY

New this year, COVID-19 safety protocols will be in place. Wearing a
mask will be optional for voters under the current guidelines, but
safety elements will be in place, such as physical distance signage,
masks and shields for staff, partitions installed and enough masks for
each voter in case they would like one.

Elections officials will do home visits to accommodate people who
cannot get out to vote.

People can apply to vote by mail until May 27.

Elections Ontario plans to go into all 240 hospitals across the
province as well.

“We will effectively go bed-to-bed to facilitate the vote,” Essensa said.

A NEW APP

A smartphone app is a new pilot project this year for Ontario
residents. It contains all the information voters need in one easy
spot, from a list of candidates to maps of polling stations. The
personalized program will even give users an electronic voting card.
Voters can choose how they wish to receive alerts regarding important
information, from texts to emails to push notifications.

“What it really does is it allows the consumer, the elector, to really
determine how they wish to communicate with us,” Essensa said.

Go to the Google Play or the App Store to download the Elections Ontario app.

WHAT TO DO NOW?

Those thinking of voting should visit the Elections Ontario website
and make sure their information is correct.

“What’s most important really is when an elector shows up with that
voter information card and one piece of ID, the process is easy,"
Essensa said.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES

“On election day, (we) employ over 55,000 people, so if you can give
us a day, we likely have an opportunity for you,” Essensa said.

Bell Media suspends Paul Bliss over allegations brought by former employee

TORONTO -- A prominent CTV News reporter has been suspended, hours
after a woman made sexual misconduct allegations against him.

Bell Media's vice president of communications said Paul Bliss, who
works at CTV's bureau in the Ontario legislature, has been suspended
and an investigation is underway.

"Allegations have been made against a CTV News reporter," Scott
Henderson said in an email statement provided to The Canadian Press.

"We take this very seriously and as a result have suspended Paul Bliss
until an investigation is complete."

The allegations were made in a blog post by Bridget Brown, who
describes herself as a Calgary-based entrepreneur and former CTV
employee.

Under a Friday post titled "MeToo in Canadian Broadcasting," Brown
detailed an alleged sexual incident in the spring of 2006 involving an
unnamed CTV reporter.

Brown wrote that when she began working at CTV, she reached out to a
reporter she had met at a party a few weeks earlier and asked if he'd
like to get coffee with her in the cafeteria and reconnect.

The reporter "suggested instead I come to his office after his shift,"
wrote Brown, and she agreed.

Brown said the reporter showed her around "the storied building where
he worked," and ended the tour back in his office.

She alleges that he then started kissing her and "pushing on the top
of my head," at which point she "bluntly" told him she wasn't
interested.

Brown wrote that she kept silent about the alleged incident for 12
years, and had been struggling in recent months with whether to reveal
it.

She said she had been thinking about the .MeToo movement of women
coming forward with stories of sexual harassment, and reading about
the resignation of Ontario Progressive Conservative leader Patrick
Brown.

He stepped down early Thursday morning, hours after CTV reported that
two women have come forward with sexual misconduct allegations against
him -- allegations that haven't been verified by The Canadian Press.

In a post on Twitter Friday night, Bridget Brown wrote that she
decided to come forward now because she had noticed a "dearth in
.MeToo stories coming from Canada, specifically from media in Canada."

When reached by phone, she told The Canadian Press she had no comment
on Bliss's suspension.

Her allegations have not been verified by The Canadian Press, and
Bliss did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Bliss's biography on CTV's website describes him as a "veteran
reporter ... and occasional anchor for CTV Toronto."

It says he has won 13 awards for his reporting, including the Edward
R. Murrow International Award for Best News Series.
