NDP leadership hopeful submits official bid, challenging 'undemocratic' vetting process

Watch: Federal NDP leadership candidates face off in first official debate

While the debate is taking place in Quebec, only 60 per cent of it will be in French, and the rest in English

NDP leadership candidates are taking part in the first official debate of the campaign Thursday evening in Montreal.

There are currently five contenders. Edmonton MP Heather McPherson, documentary filmmaker Avi Lewis and union leader Rob Ashton are considered the frontrunners. Campbell River, B.C., city councillor Tanille Johnston and organic farmer Tony McQuail are also running.

While the debate is taking place in Quebec, only 60 per cent of it will be in French, and the rest in English. The candidates (all anglophones) will also be allowed to wear earpieces to receive an English translation. However, if a candidate answers a French question in English, they will be cut off.

The party’s lone Quebec MP, Alexandre Boulerice, is hosting and will kick off the evening’s agenda with a welcome message.

Tony McQuail was born in 1952 in Pennsylvania, USA. He came to Canada as an 18 year old war resister.
As a young farmer he realized that decisions made in Ottawa had serious impacts on his community. He has run for the NDP 5 times Federally and twice provincially in his rural riding.
McQuail and his wife, Fran, ran Meeting Place Organic Farm, for over 40 years. They built a passive solar home and put up a modern wind generator in Ontario. They live on the farm, helping with the farm and their grandchildren.

Embarrassing debate. No question about Carney's radical militarist turn, Gaza or international affairs. And no candidate brought issues up. Skip to end for our summary of debate. Apparently our watch party had more live viewers than NDP site French stream & may rack me up more overall post debate views

NDP leadership hopeful submits official bid, challenging ‘undemocratic’ vetting process [video]

Author and activist Yves Engler toured New Brunswick as part of 'long-shot campaign' to push New Democrats leftward

Yves Engler, a self-described ecosocialist and anti-imperialist who is running for the leadership of the federal NDP, officially submitted his application for vetting by the party on Monday.

If he makes it through the NDP’s approval process, Engler will become the sixth candidate in the race to succeed Jagmeet Singh following the party’s historic defeat in April’s federal election.

His bid for approval by the party’s leadership vote committee follows a tour of eastern Canada with stops in New Brunswick’s three main cities. He spoke to the NB Media Co-op on Friday afternoon ahead of a speaking event in Moncton.

Trudeau must stop fuelling fire in Ukraine

For immediate release

February 15, 2021, Montreal — On Monday Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada was donating $7.8 million worth of ammunition and lethal weaponry to the Ukrainian military.

“The Canadian government shouldn’t be giving the Ukrainian military more weapons”, said Bianca Mugyenyi, Director of the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute. “It further militarizes the simmering crisis.”

While claiming their objective in delivering weapons is to deter a Russian invasion, the US, Canada and Britain recently withdrew their members from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine in rebel-held Donetsk.

“If our government is genuinely concerned that a Russian attack on Ukraine is imminent, it would make sense to have more not less eyes on the ground in the conflict zone in eastern Ukraine”, said Yves Engler, a fellow with the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute.

“By giving the Ukrainian military more weapons and removing Canada’s monitors from the OSCE mission the Trudeau government is increasing the likelihood of the Ukrainian military attacking separatists in the Eastern Donbas region”, noted Engler. “This increases the likelihood of violence in eastern Ukraine, which could spiral into a confrontation between the nuclear armed NATO alliance and Russia.”

“Part of why Washington is ramping up tensions with Russia is that they are making a last ditch bid to disrupt certification of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that is set to deliver natural gas from Russia to Germany”, added Engler. “Trudeau’s assistance to Washington in fuelling this conflict undercuts European economic and security arrangements.”

Tomorrow evening the Canadian Foreign Policy Institute will be hosting a webinar on “Canada, NATO, Russia & the Crisis over Ukraine”.

Who's in the NDP race — and why do they want to lead the party?

On Wednesday, party hosts 1st official leadership candidate forum

On Wednesday, the NDP race takes another step as the party hosts its first official leadership candidate forum, with five candidates.

Organizers aren't promising what political nerds crave — a back-and-forth debate. Instead, organizers are offering "a worker-first forum" hosted by the country's largest umbrella labour organization, the Canadian Labour Congress, and moderated by its president, Bea Bruske.

Still, the forum could give the first clues about who has the edge in the NDP leadership race.

So far, five candidates have been sanctioned by the party and will appear on stage. Here's a look at who they are.

Rob Ashton

Ashton has been described as a dark horse whose performance might surprise some when the ranked ballot votes are counted on March 29, 2026.

The B.C. dockworker and national president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Canada describes himself as a "working-class labour candidate" and not a politician or policy wonk.

Ashton doesn't speak like your typical politician and sometimes swears during interviews with journalists.

"I talk like I talk at work. I'm not gonna bullshit you," he told CBC.

His "raw, unvarnished and grounded" persona, according to pollster David Coletto, makes him a threat in the leadership campaign, but also a threat to Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre if Ashton were to head up the NDP.

WATCH | Why does Rob Ashton want to be NDP leader:

B.C. labour leader Rob Ashton joins NDP race to 'focus on workers' | Power & Politics
October 2|
Duration 9:54

B.C. labour leader Rob Ashton tells Power & Politics he's joining the race to replace Jagmeet Singh as leader of the New Democratic Party because the NDP has 'strayed away' from its traditional focus on workers.

"Pierre Poilievre's brand has been simple and effective, an anti-elite crusader promising to fight for the 'common people' against a rigged system," Coletto wrote on his blog

"Ashton may be able to puncture that. He embodies the working-class resentment Poilievre performs. When [Ashton] says he wears steel-toed boots every day, it's not a line; it's a life."

Tanille Johnston

At the age of 38, Tanille Johnston is the youngest candidate in the race.

Johnston is trained as a social worker and works full-time as the director of community programs with the First Nations Health Authority and as a city councillor in Campbell River, B.C. She's also a member of the WeWaiKai First Nation on the east coast of Vancouver Island, making her the sole Indigenous woman in the race.

Under former leader Jagmeet Singh, Johnston ran for the party in North Island—Powell River on Vancouver Island and lost to the Conservatives. She said she wants to transform the NDP into a force that is "brave, progressive and impossible to ignore."

"This leadership race is about renewal. We can no longer afford to settle for watered-down policies or wait for Liberals to do the right thing" Johnston said at her campaign launch.

A woman in a orange blazer stands in front of a music stand with folks standing around her.B.C.-based Tanille Johnston is the youngest candidate in the NDP race. (Tanille Johnston/ Submitted)

She also came out against the construction of an oil pipeline to B.C.'s north coast.

"I think pipelines are super harmful for the environment," she said in an interview.

"We don't have to invest in oil to uplift our economy. There are so many renewable resources and energy projects that we can be getting behind that are not going to destroy the planet ... There are just way better ways to do more in a green, solid, unionized Canadian jobs kind of way."

Avi Lewis

Avi Lewis is well-known to Canadians of a certain age as a TV presenter and reporter at CBC, Al Jazeera, MuchMusic and CityTV. Along the way, Lewis pursued a form of journalism where he said he "butted heads with the powerful," liberals and conservatives alike.

"I think we need more straight talk and not message boxes and politics as usual. People are cynical about message crafting and I think too many politicians talk a lot without saying anything," Lewis said in a recent candidates' debate.

Lewis's campaign stands out because he will be unveiling policy planks, or his "political offer." They will include an "aggressive" wealth tax and a "public option" for cell phones and grocery stores, something that has been pitched by leading New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.

WATCH | Avi Lewis admits NDP had an 'awful' election:

Avi Lewis makes NDP leadership to 'restore the party's fortunes'
September 19|
Duration 9:13

Filmmaker, activist and third-generation New Democrat Avi Lewis admits the NDP had an 'awful election' as he launches his bid to become federal leader, saying the party is 'going back to our base with our humility' as he runs on what he calls 're-democratizing' the party and holding large corporations accountable.

Lewis is also expected to release his version of the Green New Deal, a "green industrial strategy" that includes manufacturing electric buses with Canadian steel and unionized labour.

Lewis comes from a strong political pedigree. He's married to bestselling author Naomi Klein, who has written about capitalism as an exploitative force and why it cannot solve the climate crisis.

While Lewis describes himself as a political outsider, if he wins the leadership, he would continue the Lewis NDP dynasty. Avi Lewis is the grandson of former federal NDP leader David Lewis and the son of former Ontario NDP leader Stephen Lewis.

Heather McPherson

Edmonton NDP MP Heather McPherson begins the leadership race with a leg up on the other contenders.

She's a sitting MP and the presumed front-runner. She's broadly seen by activists within the party as the "establishment candidate," with backing from key organizers in the party who at one point or another served under previous leaders like Jack Layton or Jagmeet Singh.

WATCH | Heather McPherson says the NDP needs to change how it talks to people:

NDP needs to ‘talk to people where they’re at’: leadership candidate McPherson | Power & Politics
September 29|
Duration 9:44

Alberta NDP MP Heather McPherson entered the federal NDP leadership race on Sunday. McPherson joined Power & Politics to discuss her vision for how to rebuild the party. ‘We don’t need to change our values, but we do need to change how we talk about them,’ says McPherson.

McPherson launched her leadership bid with support from former Alberta premier Rachel Notley.

McPherson's campaign seems to be built around embracing a bigger table that includes more people, as opposed to, she said, "shrinking into some sort of purity test" and pushing people away.

Those comments prompted this response from one of the party's few remaining MPs, Leah Gazan, who suggested McPherson was a "neoliberal."

"When … neoliberals dismiss calls for equity as 'purity tests,' what they really mean is that the fight for true justice makes them uncomfortable — that caring too much is somehow a flaw," Gazan posted on social media.

Tony McQuail

Tony McQuail is and isn't your traditional NDP candidate. His campaign doesn't have the polish of the others — for example, his website was made by a high schooler. McQuail is a proud Ontario farmer, which harkens back to a time when the party's grassroots where more connected to the land under the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation.

McQuail is running a campaign that is low-budget and low travel. He often opts for hitch-hiking when he can.

He's planning to run much of his campaign out of his 40 hectares of land, which is used to raise grass-fed beef, pasture-raised pork, hens, roasting chickens as well as to grow apples.

McQuail's core reason for running is to ensure the planet isn't forgotten in this leadership race.

A man in a farmer hat             Tony McQuail is running for the NDP leadership because he wants the environment to feature in the race. (Tony McQuail/NDP)

"We have to look after the environment," McQuail said. "There should not be a conflict between having a healthy Mother Earth, creation and environment to live in and doing your work that earns you your daily bread, your home and your basic lifestyle."

McQuail said he believes in the core NDP values, having run seven times as a New Democrat in Huron County both federally and provincially since 1980.

But he wants the NDP and the Green Party of Canada to work more closely together, instead of running candidates against each other.

What about Yves Engler?

Activist and author Yves Engler is not an official candidate in the race and likely won't appear on stage on Wednesday night.

He has yet to submit his official candidacy documents to the NDP leadership race organizing committee.

"To be crystal clear, we have not put paperwork in for vetting," Engler told CBC.

LISTEN | After a decimating election loss, what kind of leader does the NDP need to rebuild? :

Front Burner32:24Who can rebuild the NDP?
It’s been about a month since the NDP leadership race began and two main contenders have emerged: longtime climate activist and former broadcaster Avi Lewis, and NDP MP for Edmonton-Strathcona, Heather McPherson, one of the most prominent New Democrat voices in Western Canada. The NDP suffered a crushing defeat last election. The party went from 24 MPs to only seven, losing official party status. The next leader is faced with a monumental challenge to rebuild. Today, we’ve got two people with different visions of what that looks like. Martin Lukacs is the managing editor of the independent progressive media outlet The Breach. He’s also the author of ‘The Poilievre Project’. Cheryl Oates is a political consultant, who worked for former Alberta NDP premier Rachel Notley. She’s also worked on NDP campaigns across Western Canada, and teaches at McGill’s Max Bell School of Public Policy. They join host Jayme Poisson for a spirited debate about the future of the NDP. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts [https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts]

Nevertheless he is still hoping to participate in Wednesday's forum.

"We've asked the CLC [Canadian Labour Congress] to include me in the forum. It would be unfortunate to exclude a campaign with a comprehensive pro-worker platform," Engler said.

He notes that former NDP leader Jagmeet Singh was a late entry into the 2017 campaign and did not officially announce until much closer to the deadline.

Engler has raised well over $80,000 and likely will not have a problem paying the race's $100,000 entrance fee. The leadership race organizing committee is warning Engler against this.

"It has been recommended that prospective campaigns not accept contributions prior to receiving approval, as such contributions are not tax-receiptable and would be in violation of the leadership rules, which require all donations to be processed through the NDP," said NDP leadership race chief electoral officer Éric Hébert-Daly.

We discuss the problems with the NDP today (and when it was under the leadership of Jagmeet, Layton, and Mulcair), and Yves’s vision of radical democratic socialism. In The Backroom, Yves Engler and I debate his controversial takes on NATO, the Russia–Ukraine war, and Canadian foreign policy.

Isaac Peltz interviews Yves Engler, a controversial and important political figure in the leftist scene in Canada. Many people have criticized Engler and decried his aggressive, in your face style, but is it well deserved? Isaac dives right into Engler's life, they talk about growing up in a labour family, political awakening, and approaching a bid at leadership for Canada's left wing party, the NDP. In this highly engaging conversation, Engler doesn't hold back, and talks about an establishment campaign being tallied together to prevent him from having the impact he wants to, whether it be for Palestine, or for socialism in Canada. How complicit is Canada in violent displacement of world leaders? Let's find out today, on the trail.

Yves Engler, a self-described ecosocialist and anti-imperialist who is running for the leadership of the federal NDP, officially submitted his application for vetting by the party on Monday. If he makes it through the NDP's approval process, Engler will become the sixth candidate in the race to succeed Jagmeet Singh following the party's historic defeat in April's federal election.

The Fat Lady ain't sung yet Who is to say that all the liberals will support Carney' malicious nonsense???

Sean Casey keeps his name in the hat for Speaker of the House of Commons

Liberal MP from P.E.I. also let his name go forward for the prestigious role in 2023

May 23, 2025 'I've seen the gradual decline in the level of civility, decorum, respect for the institution, respect for the Speaker's office. I think that I can play a role in making that better,' says Sean Casey, MP for Charlottetown. (Jane Robertson/CBC)

Charlottetown MP Sean Casey says he's letting his name go forward to be considered for the role of Speaker in the House of Commons.

With a third of MPs having been newly elected in the April 28 general election, the five-term Liberal MP said there's a unique opportunity for a reset in terms of how members treat one another in the House.

"I've seen the gradual decline in the level of civility, decorum, respect for the institution, respect for the Speaker's office. I think that I can play a role in making that better," Casey told CBC News on Friday.

"Running for Speaker is a chance for me to use my experience in a way that will make a contribution to the country. And the fact that I was passed over for cabinet is one of the reasons that I am in the race," he said.

The Speaker will be elected by the MPs on Monday as Parliament's first order of business. Tradition holds that all members other than party leaders and cabinet ministers are considered to be running unless they take their name out of contention by 6 p.m. ET on the business day before the vote.

Casey was also contending for the position in 2023 after former Liberal MP Anthony Rota stepped down from the position. But MPs at that time elected Liberal Greg Fergus, who is expected to be in the running again.

The Speaker's position comes with a salary top-up of nearly $100,000, an official residence in a nearby part of Quebec, and an apartment and office within Parliament's Centre Block building.

There has never been a Speaker of the House of Commons from P.E.I.

Several MPs make pitches to colleagues to become next Speaker of the House of Commons

Published: May 23, 2025 at 12:46PM EDT

OTTAWA — Among the tour groups converging on Parliament Hill under umbrellas this week, new and newly re-elected members of Parliament are getting acquainted with their offices and colleagues ahead of the opening of the House of Commons next week.

The first order of business for MPs is the selection of a new House Speaker on Monday morning, and at least six returning members are asking their colleagues to support their bid to take the chair.

That includes former Speaker Greg Fergus, a Liberal MP, who faced accusations of partisanship from the Conservatives and Bloc Québécois in the last Parliament that led to calls for his resignation.

Fergus was elected to the position in late 2023 after Anthony Rota was forced to resign due to a scandal that made international headlines.

Rota had invited a Second World War veteran to the House of Commons during a visit by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy without realizing the man fought for a Nazi division.

In a letter sent to MPs on May 16, Fergus acknowledged the challenge posed by those circumstances.

"To be frank, it was a difficult time for anyone in that role," he wrote.

"Partisanship was high; patience and traditional collaborative efforts were low. It was in this context that I learned the ropes of the job, often getting it right, and learning every time when I didn't."

Former deputy Speaker Chris d'Entremont and fellow Conservative MP Tom Kmiec have also sent letters to MPs asking for their support.

D'Entremont highlighted his experience during key debates, saying he made more procedural decisions than any other deputy Speaker in the past.

"The House of Commons needs an experienced Speaker now more than ever — someone who has proven their dedication to this institution, who understands the demands of the role, and who can ensure our work proceeds with respect, order and fairness," he wrote.

He said Canadians expect "co-operation, civility, and results" from Parliament — a theme echoed by many of his colleagues.

The fall sitting of the last Parliament was particularly dysfunctional. The Conservatives used a privilege motion to stall debate for 48 of the 56 days, grinding nearly all government business to a halt. Opposition parties repeatedly threatened to topple the minority government and forced three non-confidence votes.

Fergus struggled to maintain order during question period, where members were frequently reprimanded for using unparliamentary language and heckling.

Kmiec pledged to enforce the ban on unparliamentary language.

"Speakers have repeatedly tried to enforce decorum by interrupting the debate or questions and chastising MPs for bringing disorder to the House. This has not worked," he wrote.

"Decorum has not improved. It has brought the Speaker into sharp conflict with MPs instead of their role as facilitator."

P.E.I. Liberal MP Sean Casey said he thinks there's an opportunity for a positive reset.

"Decorum, civility, and respect for Parliament and the office of the Speaker have dramatically declined over the last decade at an accelerating pace. Only members can restore it, and it is for the Speaker to set the tone early, vigorously and consistently," Casey wrote.

He added that a "collegial approach, cajoling repeat offenders, has proven ineffective" and pledged "the consistent application of progressive discipline."

Liberal MP Rob Oliphant, who was first elected in 2008, said he is considering running, and wrote to colleagues that he would "very much welcome your thoughts."

"Westminster tradition is clear: no one should really want this job!" he wrote. "It is with both a significant amount of humility, as well as confidence, that I imagine myself in the Speaker's chair."

Sherry Romanado, another Liberal MP, said as deputy government House leader she has navigated "complex parliamentary dynamics with fairness and a steady hand."

"I will work tirelessly to uphold the integrity of the House, to maintain order, and to cultivate a proper environment for constructive debate — a space where members can engage in the important business of the nation with civility and purpose," she wrote.

Green Party Leader Elizabeth May said she's still mulling whether to run for a job she considers to be a "life's dream."

"I have a conflicted sense of duties: the idea of the duty to the Parliament, could I be a really good Speaker, and would it make a difference to Parliament?" she said in an interview.

"Or, does my duty lie with all the people across the country who want at least one Green voice in Parliament? And I would be immediately silencing myself as that one Green voice if I were to become Speaker."

What she is sure of is that she wants reform in the role, which she said has "played second fiddle to backroom party whips" who decide which members ask questions in question period.

"It's a monumental job, and to do it well is challenging," she said.

"We can't have our Parliament be as dysfunctional as it was right before Christmas ever again."

The final list of people running for Speaker will be released on Sunday evening.

Members are considered to be in the running unless they ask to have their name withdrawn before 6 p.m. EDT on Sunday. It's not uncommon for members to forget to withdraw their names.

When Parliament opens on Monday morning, the candidates will each have five minutes to address the House before MPs vote in a preferential secret ballot.

It's possible that not all 343 members will be able to vote, however, because of the short time frame between the April 28 election and the May 26 return to Parliament.

Elected members can only be sworn in once the results from their ridings are officially reported and the writs returned by Elections Canada, and that process can take time. There have also been recounts in a number of close ridings.

Officials who gave a briefing to reporters this week said they had completed about half the swearing-in ceremonies, with more scheduled through the weekend. It has happened in the past, officials said, that a small number of members were not sworn in by the time Parliament resumed.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 23, 2025.

Leadership Contestants

Below are officially approved candidates seeking the leadership of Canada’s NDP. Each has been approved by the Leadership Vote Committee and is authorized to receive tax-receiptable donations via the NDP.

Heather McPherson

Heather McPherson knows how to build and win. Elected in 2019, Heather and her team have made Edmonton Strathcona the strongest NDP seat in the country. They earned the highest percentage of the vote of any New Democrat in both 2021 and 2025, even while raising money and canvassing for other ridings in her area and across the country.

Heather grew up in a busy, working-class family. Her father was a truck driver with his own company, and her mother stayed home. Their lives were full of swimming lessons, hockey practices, and camping trips.

They hosted large extended-family dinners – loud, chaotic, and always welcoming. To make room for everyone, doors were taken off their hinges and laid across makeshift legs, creating tables that snaked through the house and a place for everyone.

That sense of inclusion has guided her career – from the non-profit sector to Parliament – and shaped a leadership style that makes room, rather than shutting people out.

Before politics, Heather spent nearly 20 years working for human rights, sustainable development, and global justice. With a Master’s degree in education focused on Indigenous knowledge and sustainability, she has always been grounded in service and fairness.

In Parliament, Heather has taken on the toughest files – from foreign affairs, human rights, and international trade to health care, seniors, and culture. Her commitment to building a more peaceful and just world has included visits to Ukraine and the Middle East, and she has advanced legislation to protect pensions, defend public health care, strengthen environmental reviews, and support people living with ADHD.

Heather is committed to making sure everyone has a place at the table – and to the idea that Canadians want to believe again: in each other, in fairness, and in good people making a difference.

Rob Ashton

I’m Rob, a dockworker and a union member for over 30 years. I’m also a father, stepfather, and grandfather. I know what it means to put in a hard day’s work, to worry if the paycheque will stretch far enough, and to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with others to take on the boss and win.

Today, I’m the President of the International Longshore Workers Union Canada. I’ve fought for workers and my community. I’ve built coalitions across movements for fairness and equity. I’ve tried to listen carefully, to be a problem-solver, and back up words with action. I’ve kept 12 autonomous locals united for over a decade, so I know how to build consensus even when it’s tough. I’ve worked hard to make our union one where everybody belongs.

For me, solidarity isn’t a slogan – it’s how I’ve lived my life. My union taught me that “division is the weapon of the boss,” and I’ve seen first-hand that if we stand together, we win.

Canadians want to be able to afford to put a roof over their heads and food on the table, look forward to a comfortable retirement, and still have enough left over to enjoy life with their loved ones. Instead, we face an affordability crisis and growing inequality, as the gap between ordinary people and the ultra-rich widens every year.

The NDP must once again become the party of workers and everyday people. I’m running to unite this party and make workers’ voices and the voices of everyday people the driving force of Canadian politics. I commit to having difficult conversations, rebuilding trust, and building a movement that people across Canada can see themselves in.

I’m ready to fight back against the loopholes that let the ultra-rich and big corporations call the shots, and a system that treats housing like a casino for investors instead of homes for people.

It’s time to put people before profits, every single time.

I hope you will join me.

Tanille Johnston

Tanille Johnston (she/her) is a proud Liǧʷiłdax̌ʷ woman from the WeWaiKai First Nation, a social worker, a mother, and a bold new voice for the future of the NDP.

Born and raised in Campbell River, B.C., Tanille has spent her life fighting for equity, justice, and community well-being. With over 14 years of experience as a registered social worker, she currently serves as Director of Community Programs and Services with the First Nations Health Authority, and as a City Councillor in her hometown.

Tanille’s leadership has always been grounded in action, whether delivering frontline services, building healthier communities, or advancing change within institutions. She’s served on the University of Victoria Senate, the Native Student Union, the Equity Advisory Council, and the UVic Student Society Board. She served on her Nation’s Lands Committee for nearly a decade before launching into a successful municipal election campaign in 2022 and, in 2025, running as the federal NDP candidate for North Island—Powell River.

Now, she's running to lead the NDP into a new era, one where the party leads with courage, centers equity, and organizes from the ground up. Her vision is clear: Diverse and affordable housing; Equitable access to healthcare; Protecting the environment; Meaningful and proportional electoral reform; Free and accessible post-secondary education; Increasing childcare spaces across the board; Building transportation methods that don’t alienate rural & remote communities; and Increasing the representation and participation of Indigenous persons in local, regional, provincial and federal decision making.

Tanille knows that a stronger NDP starts with and will be upheld by listening, driving forward action through grassroots organizing, and stepping up in the House to fight for what’s right. She's not here to play it safe; she’s here to build a movement.

Join Tanille in shaping a party—and a country—that works for everyone.

Avi Lewis

Avi Lewis is a veteran journalist, educator and activist who brings 35 years of movement-building experience to his campaign for NDP leadership, combining grassroots organizing with national media reach to advance working-class politics across Canada.

As a two-time federal NDP candidate (West Vancouver–Sunshine Coast–Sea-to-Sky 2021, Vancouver Centre 2025), Avi understands the challenges facing our party and the communities we serve. Between campaigns, he teaches Climate Justice and Documentary Film at UBC, preparing the next generation of organizers and storytellers.

His commitment to workers' rights runs deep. In 2004, his documentary The Take chronicled Argentina's movement of democratic, worker-controlled businesses—shown in occupied factories from Chicago to Cairo. This dedication continues through decades of collaboration with unions and social movements, always centering those fighting for economic democracy.

In 2017, Avi co-founded The Leap, mobilizing thousands of Canadians to confront the intersecting crises of climate, inequality, and racism through grassroots action. His 2019 collaboration with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Message from the Future, reached millions worldwide, demonstrating how bold ideas can capture public imagination. His 2015 documentary This Changes Everything, based on his wife Naomi Klein's bestselling book, connected climate action to economic justice for audiences globally.

Throughout his media career—reporting for TV networks worldwide, hosting CBC's CounterSpin and On The Map, and co-creating Al Jazeera's Fault Lines—Avi has consistently challenged power and amplified voices of resistance. A passionate voice on the left, he pioneered political coverage for youth audiences at MuchMusic and conducted landmark interviews from David Bowie to Leonard Cohen at CityTV's The New Music.

This unique combination of electoral experience, movement leadership, media expertise, and educational commitment positions Avi to unite our party's diverse coalition while expanding our reach to new supporters.

Avi lives in Vancouver with his wife Naomi Klein, their son Toma, and their dog Smoke.

Tony McQuail

Tony McQuail was born in 1952 in Pennsylvania, USA. As a 16-year-old he did draft counselling at the local Quaker Meeting House. His draft counseling convinced him he could not cooperate with that corrupt system. He initially planned to go to prison but realized he would have to be a tax resister when released. He emigrated to Canada in 1971.

He worked as a hired hand on a dairy farm and on a barn construction crew. In 1973 he purchased a run down 100-acre farm in Huron County, Ontario. While farming, he went to university and graduated with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies from the University of Waterloo in 1976. He became a Canadian citizen in 1977. As a young farmer he realized that decisions made in Ottawa could have a serious impact on his community and farm. He ran as the NDP candidate in the 1980 Federal election.

He has run 5 times federally and twice provincially for the NDP. He served three terms as an elected trustee on the Huron County Board of Education during the 1980’s. In the early 90’s he served as the Executive Assistant to the Hon. Elmer Buchanan, Ontario Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

McQuail has been extensively involved in community and volunteer organizations, including the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario, the Huron Farmers Union and the Huron Federation of Agriculture.

McQuail and his wife, Fran, ran Meeting Place Organic Farm, a 100-acre regenerative farm, for over 40 years before selling it to their daughter. In the 1970’s they built a passive solar home and put up the first modern grid connected wind generator in Ontario. They currently have 10 kW microfit solar array and solar water heater. They live on the farm, helping with the farm and their grandchildren.

Watch the full Q&A with Yves Engler:

Nov 12, 2025

Engler, who lives in Montreal, has authored or co-authored more than a dozen books, focussing on a radical critique of Canadian foreign policy. He is also known for disrupting media conferences and other appearances by high-ranking politicians.

His critique extends to institutions on the Canadian left, including what he calls the “conservative milquetoast NDP.” He’s calling for the party to shift leftwards. “The world needs it, the country needs it.”

Leadership applications are vetted by a three-person committee, according to party rules. Engler calls the process “undemocratic” and says it causes progressives to self-censor.

“The aim here is not just to be leader of the party,” he said. “The aim is to have an impact on the political direction of all the leadership candidates.”

He said people are seeking an alternative that will challenge the status quo at a time marked by “the livestreamed holocaust in Gaza,” stark wealth inequality and a deepening climate crisis.

“The reality is that none of the other candidates in this NDP leadership race will say something as simple and obvious as we need to shut down the tar sands,” Engler said.

He’s a controversial figure. On Tuesday, a campaign appearance at a city-owned arena in Sarnia, Ont. attracted criticism from the Canadian Antisemitism Education Campaign, which demanded the event’s cancellation and called him a “notorious antisemite” in a letter to the mayor and city council.

Engler has rejected allegations of antisemitism, saying that he condemns bigotry and pointing to his background “as an active participant in anti-racism struggles, as a writer, a public commentator and an activist.” He argues that the allegations result from his support for the Palestinian cause and criticism of the pro-Israel lobby.

Earlier this year, he was arrested in Montreal over social media posts criticizing a pro-Israel social media influencer but charges were soon dropped and he was released after spending five days in jail. However, he faces additional charges for allegedly harassing police by writing about the original charges.

During campaign stops, most of the people who show up “understand this is an insurgent campaign, this is a long-shot campaign,” Engler told the NB Media Co-op on Friday.

On the election of New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, Engler said “it’s a sign that socialism is not taboo.”

He recalled the NDP’s historical roots in the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation. In its 1933 Regina manifesto, the CCF called for the eradication of capitalism. “This kind of discussion should be part of the NDP, certainly part of NDP leadership race,” Engler said.

He waited until Monday to submit his official application to the NDP because he wanted the campaign to gain momentum, fearing that otherwise the party would reject his submission outright.

The NB Media Co-op has reached out to the NDP for comment for this story.

The party’s officially-approved candidates so far include Rob Ashton, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union of Canada; social worker Tanille Johnson, the only Indigenous candidate; journalist and activist Avi Lewis; Edmonton Strathcona MP Heather McPherson; and farmer Tony McQuail.

However CTV did not in 2005 correct?

BTW As the CBC were bragging about their buddies in the NDP they mentiond I was running too.

It was the one and only time they did so in 8 elections
