Emmy-nominated television
journalist Fred de Sam Lazaro works at his laptop in the office of his
Highland Park home. Photo by Brad Stauffer Fred
de Sam Lazaro will mark his 40th anniversary as a public television
journalist this fall. This spring his “Under-Told Stories,” a regular
feature on the PBS “News Hour,” was nominated for an Emmy Award. But the
Highland Park resident is not focused on milestones or special
recognition, but on the future challenges of reporting the news both
here and abroad. “It’s
complex out there,” de Sam Lazaro said, “with the shear volume of news
that’s emerging around the world. You have the shooting war in Europe.
Who would have dreamed about that five years ago? You have the Middle
East exploding literally. You have war on so many fronts it’s hard to
fathom. And you have raging problems in sub-Saharan Africa.” “The
Twin Cities just wasn’t a place where you discussed the broad issue of
race,” de Sam Lazaro said. “But of course that turned on a dime on May
26, 2020. All of a sudden, the under-told story was on the front line as
the most told story."
News
coverage has also changed in Minnesota, de Sam Lazaro said.
“Historically, when I’d propose to the ‘News Hour’ to do a story from
the Twin Cities about race, they’d say, ‘You don’t have so many Black
people in the Twin Cities. If you want to do that story, go to Chicago
or Detroit.’ “The
Twin Cities just wasn’t a place where you discussed the broad issue of
race,” he said. “But of course that turned on a dime on May 26, 2020.
All of a sudden, the under-told story was on the front line as the most
told story. And from there we started to explore in our own backyard
issues relating to social inequity and the startling disparities in
education, housing and health in Minnesota. “If
you go to Worthington or one of the towns built around meat packing or
poultry rearing, immigration has sustained the industries and the towns
in many ways,” de Sam Lazaro said. “The Hormel meatpackers’ strike was
my first story for the ‘News Hour.’ I remember being on those picket
lines when we were filming. I might have seen one non-white face in the
crowd. It was an all-white and mostly male work force. Now a majority
are immigrants from various parts of the world. That’s bringing change
and it deserves reportage.” The
Under-Told Stories Project is now based at the University of Saint
Thomas. It received the Emmy nomination for “Toxic Trifecta,” a segment
that “looked at how the cars, computers and clothes we discard mostly
wind up in a toxic stew in sub-Saharan Africa,” de Sam Lazaro said. “We
got some incredible video along the Atlantic beaches in West Africa,
6-foot-deep piles of textile waste. It’s startling how much of America’s
garbage winds up there.” Immigrant from India embraces journalismDe
Sam Lazaro was born in India. At 18 he immigrated to the U.S. with his
widowed physician mother. He enrolled at Marin, a junior college in
Northern California, then moved to Duluth with his wife, Kay, a Cloquet
native, and studied journalism at the College of Saint Scholastica.
There, in his senior year, he worked at the local Minnesota Public Radio
station. In 1985 he moved to the Twin Cities to work on “Almanac,” then
a new public affairs program on Twin Cities Public Television. Two
months later, he landed a job at PBS on the “MacNeil/Lehrer Report.” De
Sam Lazaro’s news beat has changed over the years. “It was regional for
a while,” he recalled, “the Upper Midwest, Detroit. Then it became
health care when (First Lady) Hillary Clinton was going to fix our
health care system in the 1990s. I actually commuted to New York as the
medical correspondent for MacNeil/Lehrer. Then when technology started
to get more portable and digital, I began to explore international
reporting and basically never stopped. “I
focused a lot on global health when HIV was a big problem in Africa,”
he said. “Essentially, I’ve grown a portfolio that mostly looks at
poverty and human suffering, which is never going to get a lot of
eyeballs to the screen. These are stories that need coverage, and in so
doing we have a solution-oriented narrative. When we discuss a global
health problem, economic problem or socio-economic challenge, we
typically talk to activists who are doing something about it. “So
I might tell you about the problem of menstrual hygiene. That may sound
esoteric, but there are 6 million girls on any given day in the world
who don’t go to school because they’re menstruating. There’s a lot
education, a lot of human potential going to waste. So I’ll tell you
those statistics and wrap them in a story about this crazy man who
devised a way to get sanitary pads made very simply and cheaply and
distributed at almost no cost.” 'Under-Told Stories' now based at Saint ThomasIt
will be 10 years ago this fall that de Sam Lazaro moved “Under-Told
Stories” to Saint Thomas. The project was started in 2006 at Saint
John’s University in Collegeville and then moved to Saint Mary’s
University in Minneapolis in 2011. The
collaboration with Saint Thomas allows students and faculty alike to
benefit from de Sam Lazaro’s dedication to solving global problems
through education and entrepreneurial endeavor. Although Saint Thomas
students are not widely involved in story production, “we have about 300
to 325 segments saved for streaming on our website,” he said. “Most of
the segments have discussion questions around them, and our target for
those are the classrooms at Saint Thomas and throughout the country. “It’s
wonderful to have a well-crafted story go on the air,” de Sam Lazaro
said. “What is done in the classroom is icing on the cake.” myvillager.com

Geoff Bennett:
To many of his supporters, Leonard Peltier was a
political prisoner unjustly punished for his activism with the American
Indian movement. To his critics, he is a remorseless killer of two FBI
agents 50 years ago, a charge he denies. In the final minutes of his presidency, Joe Biden commuted Peltier's sentence, restricting him to home confinement. Our Fred de Sam Lazaro recently visited Peltier on the Turtle Mountain Indian Reservation in North Dakota.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Can you see that screen, or is it too small?
Leonard Peltier, Indigenous Rights Activist:
No, it's too small.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
His sight is impaired, among several health problems, time in prison compounding the toll of time itself.
Leonard Peltier:
Play welcome home, Uncle Leonard.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Time has brought helpful technology and, at his home
today, Leonard Peltier is surrounded by memories and art, much of it his
own work.
Leonard Peltier:
That's the drawing over right here. I have always
wanted to be an artist. And then I painted murals and stuff before I
went to prison. And when I got there, I probably painted two, three,
four hours a day. And this guy was a modern-day medicine man.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
That sustained him through the decades in federal prisons, he says, as did moral support of fans and celebrities worldwide.
Leonard Peltier:
This was given to me.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
One prized possession, this sculpture of an ancient indigenous warrior sent to him by then-Bolivian President…
Leonard Peltier:
Evo Morales, the first full-blooded Indian president in this continent. I'm very proud of it.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
This home was bought for him by his supporters, a modest
two-bedroom rambler, but after a life in poverty or prison, it's an
unimaginable luxury.
Leonard Peltier:
When I walked into the door, and I said, this is my home,
this is what you guys bought me, they said, yes, we — you sacrificed
for us. This is yours. Nick Tilsen, Founder and CEO, NDN
Collective: I just want to acknowledge the generation before us. Think
about everything that Leonard, AIM, the American Indian Movement, did,
his own freedom. And we're going to keep calling for Leonard's freedom.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Nick Tilsen, who heads the indigenous advocacy group NDN
collective, helped lead the most recent campaign to bring Peltier home,
literally, including a rousing welcome earlier this year.
Nick Tilsen:
They didn't wait for things to be perfect. They didn't
wait for a strategic plan. When they seen the injustice, they did
something about it. And so, for me, one of the big things that's being a
big inspiration from him.
Leonard Peltier:
We were called every goddamn name you could be called, so the public that hate us. No, we weren't those people.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
At 81, Leonard Peltier is as angry as ever, unapologetic
for a lifelong effort to draw attention to the litany of indigenous
grievances.
Leonard Peltier:
All we were trying to do was save a race of people from
being terminated. They enslaved us, killed us, massacred us, raped our
children, enslaved our children.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Leonard Peltier says he felt his first call to activism
as a young teen here on Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota, a
small, isolated Chippewa community that Congress was considering
terminating in the 1950s. Termination was part of a larger policy
of assimilating indigenous people, and it would have ended all federal
support for the community here. Turtle Mountain was eventually spared
termination, but the young Peltier did feel the sting of assimilation
policies, placed when he was 9 in an Indian boarding school. The
children were forcibly removed from their families with the goal of
erasing their native language and culture. Many schools were rife with
abuse.
Leonard Peltier:
All of our hair was cut off, and they would start
indoctrinating us into the white culture and education, whatever you
want to call it. And when we continued to be rebellious about it, we
would get the hell beat out of us.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Federal policies also relocated millions of Native
Americans to urban centers and confiscated vast swathes of mineral-rich
lands beyond those ceded in treaties, the legacy, impoverished
reservations and an indifferent Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs, which
Peltier says, colluded with local tribal governments.
Leonard Peltier:
Land and cattle, they were selling out. We knew that.
Almost every tribal government was corrupt back in them days. That's why
we went after them.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
"We" is the American Indian Movement, or AIM, armed self-described warriors who challenged the status quo. Like
the Black Panthers and civil rights and anti-war campaigners of the
time, they drew scrutiny from the FBI, particularly on and near the Pine
Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. In June 1975, two FBI agents and one
movement activist were killed in an encounter near an AIM campsite. Peltier
was one of three AIM members charged in the agents' killing. He fled to
Canada, while the other two were tried and acquitted after arguing that
they acted in self-defense. Nick Estes, Professor of American
Indian Studies, University of Minnesota: Had he been tried alongside his
co-defendants, he probably — we wouldn't be having this conversation.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Nick Estes, professor of American Indian studies at the
University of Minnesota, says, by the time Peltier was extradited back
to the U.S., prosecutors changed their strategy and the trial venue. Estes is one of many academic and legal scholars who've questioned its fairness.
Nick Estes:
He just happened to be an American Indian man on the
reservation that day in possession of a gun, because they could not
actually prove that he was the shooter. Michael Clark, President, Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI: He's been unrepentant. He's been remorseless.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Well, he says that he did not kill these agents, so that would explain his lack of repentance, I suspect.
Michael Clark:
Well, the evidence, the courts, the appellate courts all say differently.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Michael Clark heads an association of former FBI agents.
The agency has long vigorously opposed any clemency, insisting justice
was served in Peltier's case.
Michael Clark:
He had 12 separate opportunities for appeals, all of which were denied. You just can't change the facts of this heinous crime.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Why haven't they sustained an appeal?
Nick Estes:
The overwhelming influence of the FBI. I mean, it's easy
to just keep saying this. The way that the FBI has intervened not only
in his parole hearings, but in these appeals cases, who wants to be the
judge that lets off an alleged cop killer?
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
An allegation Peltier insists was false brought by a
legal system that has long mistreated indigenous people and one reason
he says he's spurned any plea deal that might have lessened his
sentence.
Leonard Peltier:
I'm a sundancer. I took that oath. As a sundancer, I
would die for the people if I had to, but I was not going to turn
against my people. So I stayed defiant all the 49 years-plus in prison.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
And you say even today.
Leonard Peltier:
Even today. You hear me now. I'm not — I ain't changed.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Neither have the dire conditions in most indigenous communities and the campaigns for the return of lands for treaty rights.
Nick Tilsen:
We will continue to rise up no matter what basis our people.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Peltier will be there mostly in spirit, not in person, thanks to frail health and restrictions on his travel.
Leonard Peltier:
I can't go to Grand Forks for medical treatment without a
pass or anything over 100 miles. I can only stay so many days. I can't
have a whole bunch of people here visiting me at one time. I still haven't seen some of my family.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
And is that your little sister, Betty?
Leonard Peltier:
My little sister Betty, yes.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Aside from reuniting with family members, this
twice-married father of seven hopes upcoming treatment will improve his
vision so he can resume painting.
Leonard Peltier:
This is going to be my studio.
Fred de Sam Lazaro:
Less certain is his second hope for a full pardon. For the "PBS News Hour," I'm Fred de Sam Lazaro on the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Reservation.

Leonard Peltier on Indigenous Rights, His Half-Century in Prison & More
Sep 19, 2025 Democracy
Now! host Amy Goodman sat down with longtime political prisoner and
Indigenous activist Leonard Peltier for his first extended television
and radio broadcast interview since his release to home confinement in
February. Before his commutation by former President Joe Biden, the
81-year-old Peltier spent nearly 50 years behind bars. Peltier has
always maintained his innocence for the 1975 killing of two FBI
officers. He is expected to serve the remainder of his life sentences
under house arrest at the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Nation in
Belcourt, North Dakota. In a wide-ranging conversation, we spoke to
Peltier about his case, his time in prison, his childhood spent at
American Indian boarding school and his later involvement in the
American Indian Movement (AIM) and more. "We still have to live under
that, that fear of losing our identity, losing our culture, our
religion," Peltier says about his continued commitment to Indigenous
rights. "The fight for, the struggle still goes on for me. I'm not going
to give up."

Leonard Peltier Has COVID; His Lawyer — an Ex-Federal Judge — Calls for Native Leader to Be Freed
Jan 31, 2022 Jailed
77-year-old Native American activist Leonard Peltier has tested
positive for COVID-19 less than a week after describing his prison
conditions as a "torture chamber." Peltier was convicted of aiding and
abetting the killing of two FBI agents during a shootout on South
Dakota's Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 while a member of the American
Indian Movement. He has long maintained his innocence and is considered
by Amnesty International as a political prisoner. We speak with his
lawyer and former federal judge Kevin Sharp, who says Peltier's case was
riddled with misconduct, including witness intimidation and withholding
exculpatory evidence. Sharp argues Peltier's health, age and unfair
trial make him the perfect candidate for executive clemency. "The legal
remedies are no longer available," says Sharp on Peltier's case. "Now
it's time for the [Bureau of Prisons] and the president of the United
States to fix this and send him home."

Ep. 3 - Judge Kevin Sharp (attorney for wrongfully convicted Native American Indian, Leonard Pelt...
Oct 29, 2025 George
Bowe Blitch sits down with Judge Kevin Sharp to discuss Leonard Peltier
and his ongoing fight for his freedom, after being wrongfully
imprisoned for nearly half a century. Leonard
Peltier (b. Sept. 12, 1944) is a Native American activist and member of
the American Indian Movement. Following a controversial trial, filled
with falsified evidence and testimony, he was convicted of aiding and
abetting the deaths of two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents
during a June 26, 1975 shooting on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in
South Dakota. This
video was released on June 26th, 2022 - the 47th anniversary of the
shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation that changed the lives of all
that were involved. Today,
we seek out justice, reform, and the granting of Executive Clemency for
Leonard Peltier, at the hands of President Biden. One signature sends
him home. But millions of our voices are needed to reach the heart,
soul, eyes and ears of the President. Join us in making your voice
heard. The time is now. The place is here. We must heal the sacred
circle, and Free Leonard Peltier Permission to use Leonard’s artwork were generously granted by Leonard, Judge Kevin Sharp, and Tsipi Ben-Heim, with CITYarts Special

clemency for Leonard Peltier, a 77-year-old Native American civil rights
activist wrongly convicted in federal court and sentenced to two
consecutive life terms for killing FBI agents at Pine Ridge Reservation
in 1975. The U.S. Attorney’s office has since admitted it doesn’t know
who killed the agents. In 2019 and 2020, Kevin also represented
Tennessee death row inmate Nick Sutton’s request to the Governor to
commute his death sentence to life in prison without parole. He is an
Advisory Board member to the Tennessee Innocence Project and the
Nashville, Tennessee Chapter of the American Constitution Society.
When Kevin is not lawyering, he enjoys spending time with his family, reading, and studying Native American history.
H. Vincent McKnight Jr.
Co-Vice Chairman
Vincent (Vince) McKnight is Co-Vice Chairman of Sanford
Heisler Sharp McKnight and Co-Chair of the firm’s Whistleblower and Qui
Tam Practice Group. Since joining the firm, Vince has received
several awards and recognitions. Most recently, he was one of a few
plaintiff’s lawyers recognized as an MVP by Law360 in
Government Contracts. Martindale-Hubble gave him the Judicial AV
Preeminent Rating in 2021, and prior to that, he regularly received the
AV Preeminent Rating. He has also been recognized as a Best Lawyer in
America and a Super Lawyer. In addition, he was named as a Lawyer of
Distinction and listed on the National Black Lawyer Top 100 list. Vince
currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for The
Anti-Fraud Coalition (TAF), a non-profit, public interest organization
founded in 1986 and devoted to raising awareness of whistleblower law
and empowering those who come forward to expose fraud against the
government and financial markets. Previously, Vince served on the Board
of Governors for the Trial Lawyers Association of Metropolitan DC. At
Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight, Vince’s practice has focused on
representing corporate whistleblowers who have exposed government
contract procurement fraud, banking misconduct, securities fraud, and
other corporate malfeasance. He has also represented executives in
sensitive wrongful discharge and discrimination cases. Vince’s
representations have included: - Representing the former
Executive Vice President and Chief Security Officer of Wells Fargo who
assisted the OCC, SEC, and DOJ to recover $3.5 billion in fines and
penalties arising out of the “fake account” scandal
- Representing
the former Director of Contracts at Navistar who alleged that Navistar
misrepresented its pricing structure to the DOD and overcharged the
Government in the MRAP vehicle purchase, resulting in Navistar agreeing
to pay $50 million to settle this case in 2020
- Representing the
former Director of Contracts from CDM Smith who alleged that CDM Smith
developed an automated process to conduct an audit that dramatically cut
the man-hours necessary to complete the job but continued to charge the
Government as if the work was still being performed manually, resulting
in CDM Smith paying $10 million to resolve these allegations
- Representing
the former Director of Contracts at NetApp who alleged that NetApp
violated the GSA “Best Price Clause” and overcharged the Government by
millions, resulting in NetApp paying $128 million to resolve these
allegations
- Representing a former executive at Tenet who alleged
that Tenet overcharged the Government by ordering and billing for
unnecessary medical tests for patients, leading Tenet to settle these
claims for $1.4 million
Vince received his law degree from
the University of Pennsylvania and his undergraduate degree from Brown
University. While at the University of Pennsylvania, Vince learned trial
advocacy in the school’s pioneering clinical program that allowed him
to try a case in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania as a student. He
was also on a team of student lawyers that convinced a federal judge
that confining a prisoner indefinitely to solitary confinement without
meaningful review violated his civil rights. A member of the
District of Columbia and Maryland bars, Vince regularly leads and
participates on panels on whistleblower laws at the ABA, the Federal Bar
Association, and The Anti-Fraud Coalition. He has been quoted in
numerous newspapers and press outlets on important whistleblowers
matters. He was part of a team of lawyers that consulted with
then-Maryland State Senator (now U.S. Congressman) Jamie Raskin to draft
the Maryland False Claims Act. Before joining Sanford Heisler
Sharp McKnight, Vince completed a clerkship for the Honorable William C.
Pryor on the District of Columbia Superior Court and the District of
Columbia Court of Appeals. Over his 40-plus-year career, Vince has tried
over 50 cases to verdict and appeared in courts across the U.S. Vince
also litigated Adams v. Cochran, the case in which the DC Court
of Appeals first departed from the employment-at-will doctrine (the
assumption that employment is for an indefinite amount of time and may
be terminated at any time) in the District of Columbia. When Vince
is not lawyering, he enjoys spending time with his family and listening
to jazz. As a native Washingtonian, he is an avid fan of all Washington
sports teams and regularly attends Wizards games.

Leonard Peltier Has COVID; His Lawyer — an Ex-Federal Judge — Calls
for Native Leader to Be Freed
January 31, 2022
Jailed 77-year-old Native American activist Leonard Peltier has tested
positive for COVID-19 less than a week after describing his prison
conditions as a “torture chamber.” Peltier was convicted of aiding and
abetting the killing of two FBI agents during a shootout on South
Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 while a member of the American
Indian Movement. He has long maintained his innocence and is
considered by Amnesty International as a political prisoner. We speak
with his lawyer and former federal judge Kevin Sharp, who says
Peltier’s case was riddled with misconduct, including witness
intimidation and withholding exculpatory evidence. Sharp argues
Peltier’s health, age and unfair trial make him the perfect candidate
for executive clemency. “The legal remedies are no longer available,”
says Sharp on Peltier’s case. “Now it’s time for the [Bureau of
Prisons] and the president of the United States to fix this and send
him home.”

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A
woman who was killed in 1975 was afraid of American Indian Movement
leaders immediately before her death, a witness testified Wednesday. The testimony came at the trial of Arlo Looking Cloud, 50, a former AIM member accused of murder in Anna Mae Aquash’s death. Looking
Cloud is one of two former AIM members charged in Aquash’s kidnapping
and death. The other man, John Graham, pleaded innocent and remains free
on bond in Canada. He plans to fight extradition. Prosecutors
say that Aquash, who was part of the 1973 Indian takeover of Wounded
Knee, was killed because AIM members thought she was a government spy. AIM leaders have denied any involvement in her death. But
Darlene Nichols, the former wife of AIM leader Dennis Banks, testified
that another AIM member, Leonard Peltier, said “he believed [Aquash] was
a fed and that he was going to get some truth serum and give it to her
so she would tell the truth.” Nichols testified that she also
heard that Peltier had “put a gun to her [Aquash’s] head and wanted to
know if she was an informant.” “She told him that if he believed that, he could go ahead and shoot,” Nichols said. Nichols
said she and Aquash shared a jail cell in the fall of 1975 when Aquash
started talking about her fears. It was the last time she saw Aquash
alive, Nichols said. “She was upset, she was crying, she was afraid,” said Nichols. “I knew she was scared of Leonard and Dennis at that point.” Nichols also told jurors that she was with Aquash when Peltier bragged about killing two FBI agents in 1975. Peltier
was found guilty of killing the agents on the Pine Ridge Indian
Reservation and is serving back-to-back life sentences. He has
maintained his innocence, but appeals have failed to overturn the
conviction. Nichols cried when she told jurors that she was with
Banks, Aquash and others when Peltier said one of the agents begged for
his life but that he shot them anyway. “He started talking about
June 26 [1975] and he put his hand like this and started talking about
the two FBI agents,” said Nichols, gesturing as though she was holding a
gun. In an interview Wednesday, Barry Bachrach, Peltier’s attorney, denied Nichols’ accusations. “I’m
not sure why she’s saying this. I’m not sure who put her up to it, but
it is unequivocally false,” Bachrach told Associated Press. “This whole
trial is about smearing ... AIM people and covering up history.” Banks could not be reached for comment. Federal
agents have investigated Aquash’s death for years but did not make an
arrest in the case until Looking Cloud was picked up March 27 in Denver. Nichols, who had four children with Banks and separated from him in
1989, said she eventually decided to call the FBI and cooperate in the
investigation into Aquash’s death. “I started believing the American Indian Movement had something to do with it,” she said. Looking
Cloud’s lawyer, Tim Rensch, asked Nichols whether she stood to gain
anything from her testimony through a book or movie deal. Nichols works
in the movie industry. He also asked her about how much the
government had paid her to help with the case. Nichols testified that
she had received $42,000 for her expenses of tape recording witnesses
and moving around for her safety.

Library closures not imminent, towns could take some over, says Dale Kirby
By Mark Quinn and Stephanie Tobin, CBC News Posted: May 02, 2016 10:19 AM NT
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfoundland-labrador/dale-kirby-library-closure-update-1.3562036
Education and Early Childhood Development says it's still possible the
libraries up for closure could stay open.
Kirby said Monday that some of the Newfoundland and Labrador Public
Libraries branches are in a location that could allow for an easy
transition for the municipal government to take them over.
He also said that a number of public libraries that are in schools may
not close.
Kirby said after funding from the provincial library board is cut,
schools may chose to keep those libraries open, although he said they
will no longer be accessible to the public.
"People have the misconception that school libraries are closing and
that's not true," said Kirby.
Last week, the province announced funding to 54 of the province's 95
libraries is going to be cut.
Of the 54 libraries the province has up on the chopping block, 25 of
them are within municipal buildings. In those cases, the towns could
take over the operation and cost of the libraries.
Another 20 are within schools in the communities,
The remaining nine are in stand-alone buildings.
Over the weekend, Liberal backbencher Scott Reid suggested on Facebook
that the government should reconsider public library cuts.
Speaking with reporters Monday, Kirby said that will not happen.
"The budget is not going to be reconsidered," he said.
"What's in the budget is in the budget — that's my understanding.
Education and Early Childhood Development's budget is not under
reconsideration."
According to Kirby, the Newfoundland and Labrador English School
District will work with local groups to provide public access at 20
school libraries.
Kirby added the province has twice the number of libraries per capita,
but half the funding, than other jurisdictions.
He said the library cuts are a "devolution exercise" more than closures.
Kirby added none of the decisions for his department outlined in the
2016 budget will be changed.

> David Amos asked me to contact you. I met him last June after he became
> an independent (not representing any political party) candidate in our
> federal
> election that was held June 28. He was a candidate in our constituency of
> Fundy (now called Fundy-Royal).
>
> I wrote a profile story about him, as I did all other candidates. That
> story appeared in the Kings County Record June 22. A second story, written
> by one of my reporters, appeared on the same date, which was a report on
> the candidates' debate held June 18.
>
> As I recall David Amos came last of four candidates in the election.
> The winner got 14,997 votes, while Amos got 358.
>
> I have attached the two stories that appeared, as well as a photo
> taken by reporter Erin Hatfield during the debate. I couldn't find the
> photo
> that ran, but this one is very similar.

> Raising a Little Hell- Lively Debate Provokes Crowd
>
> By Erin Hatfield
>
> "If you don't like what you got, why don't you change it? If your
> world is all screwed up, rearrange it."
>
> The 1979 Trooper song Raise a Little Hell blared on the speakers at
> the 8th Hussars Sports Center Friday evening as people filed in to
> watch the Fundy candidates debate the issues. It was an accurate, if
> unofficial, theme song for the debate.
>
> The crowd of over 200 spectators was dwarfed by the huge arena, but as
> they chose their seats, it was clear the battle lines were drawn.
> Supporters of Conservative candidate Rob Moore naturally took the blue
> chairs on the right of the rink floor while John Herron's Liberalswent
> left. There were splashes of orange, supporters of NDP Pat Hanratty,
> mixed throughout. Perhaps the loudest applause came from a row towards
> the back, where supporters of independent candidate David Amos sat.
>
> The debate was moderated by Leo Melanson of CJCW Radio and was
> organized by the Sussex Valley Jaycees. Candidates wereasked a barrage
> of questions bypanelists Gisele McKnight of the Kings County Record
> and Lisa Spencer of CJCW.
>
> Staying true to party platforms for the most part, candidates
> responded to questions about the gun registry, same sex marriage, the
> exodus of young people from the Maritimes and regulated gas prices.
> Herron and Moore were clear competitors, constantly challenging each
> other on their answers and criticizing eachothers' party leaders.
> Hanratty flew under the radar, giving short, concise responses to the
> questions while Amos provided some food for thought and a bit of comic
> relief with quirky answers. "I was raised with a gun," Amos said in
> response to the question of thenational gun registry. "Nobody's
> getting mine and I'm not paying 10 cents for it."
>
> Herron, a Progressive Conservative MP turned Liberal, veered from his
> party'splatform with regard to gun control. "It was ill advised but
> well intentioned," Herron said. "No matter what side of the house I am
> on, I'm voting against it." Pat Hanratty agreed there were better
> places for the gun registry dollars to be spent.Recreational hunters
> shouldn't have been penalized by this gun registry," he said.
>
> The gun registry issues provoked the tempers of Herron and Moore. At
> one point Herron got out of his seat and threw a piece of paper in
> front of Moore. "Read that," Herron said to Moore, referring to the
> voting record of Conservative Party leader Steven Harper. According to
> Herron, Harper voted in favour of the registry on the first and second
> readings of the bill in 1995. "He voted against it when it counted, at
> final count," Moore said. "We needa government with courage to
> register sex offenders rather than register the property of law
> abiding citizens."
>
> The crowd was vocal throughout the evening, with white haired men and
> women heckling from the Conservative side. "Shut up John," one woman
> yelled. "How can you talk about selling out?" a man yelled whenHerron
> spoke about his fear that the Conservatives are selling farmers out.
>
> Although the Liberal side was less vocal, Kings East MLA Leroy
> Armstrong weighed in at one point. "You're out of touch," Armstrong
> yelled to Moore from the crowd when the debate turned to the cost of
> post-secondary education. Later in the evening Amos challenged
> Armstrong to a public debate of their own. "Talk is cheap. Any time,
> anyplace," Armstrong responded.
>
> As the crowd made its way out of the building following the debate,
> candidates worked the room. They shook hands with well-wishers and
> fielded questions from spectators-all part of the decision-making
> process for the June 28 vote.

>
> The independent candidate lives in Milton, Massachusetts with his wife

>
> One has only to be at least 18, a Canadian citizen and not be in jail

>
> When it came time to launch his political crusade, Amos chose his
> favourite place to do so—Fundy.
>
> Amos, 52, is running for political office because of his
> dissatisfaction with politicians.
>
> "I've become aware of much corruption involving our two countries," he
> said. "The only way to fix corruption is in the political forum."
>
> The journey that eventually led Amos to politics began in Sussex in
> 1987. He woke up one morning disillusioned with life and decided he
> needed to change his life.
>
> "I lost my faith in mankind," he said. "People go through that
> sometimes in midlife."
>
> So Amos, who'd lived in Sussex since 1973, closed his Four Corners

> Panhead motorcycle.
>
> "Annie and I rode around for awhile (three years, to be exact)

>
> Since he and Annie stopped wandering, he has married, fathered a son

>
> He also describes himself in far more colourful terms—a motorcyclist
> rather than a biker, a "fun-loving, free-thinking, pig-headed

> Canadian and a "wild colonial boy."
>
> Ironically, the man who is running for office has never voted in his life.
>
> "But I have no right to criticize unless I offer my name," he said.
> "It's alright to bitch in the kitchen, but can you walk the walk?"
>
> Amos has no intention of actively campaigning.
>
> "I didn't appreciate it when they (politicians) pounded on my door
> interrupting my dinner," he said. "If people are interested, they can
> call me. I'm not going to drive my opinions down their throats."
>
> And he has no campaign budget, nor does he want one.
>
> "I won't take any donations," he said. "Just try to give me some. It's
> not about money. It goes against what I'm fighting about."
>
> What he's fighting for is the discussion of issues – tainted blood,

> COALITION CALLS ON LEADERS TO ACT IMMEDIATELY TO STOP OIL AND GAS
> EXPLORATION IN GULF OF ST. LAWRENCE
> For Immediate Release - October 4, 2010
> PICTOU, NS – Today’s decision by the Canada Newfoundland and Labrador
> Offshore Petroleum Board (CNLOPB) to allow seismic blasting in the
> Gulf of St. Lawrence was met with shock and concern by a coalition
> calling for a moratorium on oil and gas development in the Gulf of St.
> Lawrence. The coalition - made of aboriginal, fishing, and
> environmental organizations - is calling on municipal, provincial,
> federal, and aboriginal leaders to act swiftly to halt the testing.
>
> “With this decision, the CNLOPB has approved an activity that could
> damage this entire precious ecosystem,” according to Mary Gorman of
> the Save Our Seas and Shores, “We want this decision reversed
> immediately, and action taken to allow jurisdictions bordering on the
> Gulf to have a say in its future.”
>
> “Seismic testing could start in the next 48 hours, potentially
> damaging marine mammals like blue whales, and disrupting fish and
> fisheries. This approval has given oil and gas as a toehold in the
> Gulf that could lead to full scale drilling,” according to Danielle
> Giroux of the. “Fishermen I work for need more say over protecting the
> Gulf. We want the CNLOPB’s decision reversed immediately.”
>
> “An oil spill in the Gulf of St. Lawrence would impact fish stocks and
> coastal communities in Quebec, PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and
> Newfoundland. Moreover, the national importance of this ecosystem must
> be upheld.” says Gretchen Fitzgerald, of the Sierra Club Canada. “
> Federal laws to protect endangered species and fish habitat recognize
> the importance of protecting our shared biodiversity and resources.
> This decision is not reflecting this shared responsibility or concerns
> expressed by groups around the Gulf.”
