Harper’s enforcer: Meet Jenni Byrne, the most powerful woman in Ottawa

Adam Radwanski The Globe and Mail
Published Friday, May 29, 2015 8:00PM EDT

"As Tim Hudak prepared for his second and final shot at becoming
Ontario’s premier, the word went out through Conservative circles in
the nation’s capital: Do not help this man.

Mr. Hudak, then the leader of the provincial Progressive
Conservatives, was a kindred spirit set to run on a right-wing agenda.
He had a decent shot at knocking off a Liberal incumbent with whom
Stephen Harper had a frosty relationship. And after more than a decade
in the political wilderness, his Tories badly needed organizational
support from federal cousins who had recently been in the business of
winning.

Before Mr. Hudak’s first election leading his party, in 2011, such
support was forthcoming. The federal Conservatives lent experienced
campaign managers for target ridings, shared their volunteer lists,
and helped raise money. They even let the provincial Tories use a
campaign bus.

But on the final day of that election campaign, before the votes were
even counted, Mr. Hudak made a bad mistake that went a long way toward
souring his relationship with the federal party: He fired his chief of
staff, Lynette Corbett.

Mixed views about whether Ms. Corbett deserved to be let go, after a
behind-the-scenes power struggle among Mr. Hudak’s senior officials,
are beside the point.

What matters is that she’s among the very best friends of Jenni Byrne.

There are only a few backroom operators in this country whose bad side
needs to be avoided at all costs. And Ms. Byrne – the Prime Minister’s
campaign manager, his enforcer, his primary connection to his party’s
grassroots, and one of his longest-serving loyalists – is most
emphatically one of them.

“Pretty much from the day Lynette was fired, we couldn’t get a phone
call returned,” recalls a senior member of Mr. Hudak’s campaign team.
“It pretty quickly became clear this wasn’t an issue to be managed. It
was a fact to be accepted.”

Never mind central support; all but the bravest federal Conservatives
were reluctant even to be seen at a Hudak fundraiser, for fear of what
it would do to their careers.

It is unclear whether Mr. Harper was fully aware that his party was
choking off resources to Mr. Hudak; if he was, he didn’t much care.
Such is the leeway afforded to the woman who claimed credit for
steering the Prime Minister to majority government, and whom he will
be counting on to help him hold on to it in this year’s federal
campaign."

Dreary PC leadership campaign gets a boost 56

By Christina Blizzard, Queen's Park Columnist
First posted: Thursday, April 02, 2015 07:24 PM EDT

TORONTO - PC leadership candidate Patrick Brown got a huge boost to
his campaign from two prominent Conservative power-brokers Thursday.

Postmedia CEO Paul Godfrey and Derek Burney, former ambassador to the
U.S., former chief of staff to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and key
adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, held a news conference in
support of Brown.

What was most evident was their frustration with the provincial party
and the way it’s alienated so many groups — unions, teachers, public
servants.

“This party in the past number of years has picked fights with labour,
which aren’t necessary,” Godfrey told reporters.

“You can sit down and talk to them. You can differ with them. You can
agree with them, but the fact is you have to talk to them,” he said.
That struck me as remarkably sage advice.

Of course, there are those who’ll suggest I’m saying that because
Godfrey will soon become my boss, once Postmedia completes its
purchase of Sun Media.

To that I say I’m way too old to kiss butt to keep my job.

Judging from the reaction from other reporters, I’m guessing that’s
not the case at other newspapers.

Some reporters, apparently, were surprised to discover that (a)
Godfrey is a Conservative and (b) newspaper owners decide editorial
policy.

Reporters wanted to know if Godfrey’s support of Brown meant the
newspaper chain would be echoing that support. That’s a fair question.

But for the Toronto Star to suggest that Godfrey is meddling in
politics is a bit like the Archbishop of Canterbury complaining that
the Pope is meddling in religion.

All newspapers have their political viewpoints — views generally
moulded by their owners.

When was the last time the Star supported a Conservative?

Frankly, I’m shocked, shocked. Who knew Paul Godfrey was a Conservative?

He told reporters he’d been a member of the party all his adult life.

Anyone who suggests they’re just finding this out now is either
deluded or naive.

I worked for Godfrey when I was City Hall columnist and when I first
came to Queen’s Park. He never once called me to tell me what to
write.

Did he influence the choice of which political parties we backed
editorially in elections, or who we supported editorially for mayor? I
expect so, much as I’d expect the owners of the Star, Globe and Post
to do the same thing.

The Post runs columns from writers with views right across the
political spectrum and

Burney has been known to savage Harper in his column in the Globe.

Look, the PC Party in Ontario is in a grave state of disrepair.

It needs all the help it can muster to rejuvenate and regenerate and
to get back to the grassroots party members say they’re looking for —
but never actually seem to be able to find.

Godfrey is being open and upfront in his support for Brown. He could
easily have simply pulled strings behind the scene.

Better still, Godfrey and Burney gave the Tories sound advice. It’s
high time someone talked turkey to this party that screws up at every
election. The PCs were down to a membership of 10,000 and before this
campaign were on life support.

They should be glad of any help they can get.

“We’ve had a select few at Queen’s Park dictate party policy,” Brown
said, and vowed to open up party decision making.

His main opponent, Christine Elliott, says the campaign is far from
over and won’t be until the convention May 9.

“We’re doing well in our membership totals,” she told reporters.

She has good support right across all 107 ridings and will be
travelling across the province to shore up that support, she said.

“I’m not going to stop until it’s voting day,” she said. Elliott also
confirmed that no matter the outcome, she’ll stick around as an MPP
and run in the next election.

At least Godfrey’s finally injected some news into what has until now
been a dreary campaign.

For that, reporters from all news outlets are eternally grateful.

David Amos For the record I am against free trade and always will be. When I ran for a seat in the 38th Parliament in 2004 I clearly stated we should ourselves of NAFTA and have done so in 4 more elections i ran in. 2004 was long before Trump and his cohorts climbed on the band wagon talking tough on trade. All the Yankees are is just tough talk while they go about bilking us for more more more. The Yankees and much of the world need our natural resources and always will.

These are some of my words on the topic that were quoted in two newsrags at the time while CBC denied that my name was even on the ballot.

"What he’s fighting for is the discussion of issues – tainted blood, the exploitation of the Maritimes’ gas and oil reserves and NAFTA, to name a few.

"The political issues in the Maritimes involve the three Fs – fishing, farming and forestry, but they forget foreign issues," he said. "I’m death on NAFTA, the back room deals and free trade. I say chuck it (NAFTA) out the window.

NAFTA is the North American Free Trade Agreement which allows an easier flow of goods between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Amos disagrees with the idea that a vote for him is a wasted vote.

"There are no wasted votes," he said. "I want people like me, especially young people, to pay attention and exercise their right. Don’t necessarily vote for me, but vote."

Trudeau to speak to Kent Hehr about sexual misconduct allegations

Prime minister wraps up Davos trip, praises women for courage, leadership in coming forward

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is making his way home today from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will be speaking to Sport Minister Kent Hehr about allegations of sexual misconduct made on social media.

During a news conference to wrap up his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trudeau was asked about allegations that women felt fearful about getting in the same elevator with Hehr at the Alberta legislature and that Hehr had made unwanted sexually suggestive comments.

Trudeau said he is "unequivocal" in his support for women who come forward with complaints of sexual harassment and assault.

"I haven't had the opportunity to speak directly with Kent. I will in the coming hours and we will have more to say before the plane lifts off tonight," he said.

On posts to Twitter, a woman said Hehr made women feel "unsafe" and made verbally suggestive remarks, including "you're yummy."

During the news conference, Trudeau also saluted the women who came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown, who stepped down overnight while denying any wrongdoing.

Trudeau said all allegations are taken "extremely seriously."

Saluting courage, leadership

"My thoughts turn immediately to the women who came forward, knowing how difficult it is, it can be, to salute them for their courage and their leadership," he said. "I certainly hope their example will resonate and that the support of their friends, their families and the community at large remains with them."

Trudeau is making his way back to Canada Thursday.

He said the forum provided a valuable opportunity to push for "real results" for Canadians by promoting trade and economic prosperity.

Asked why he did not meet with U.S. President Donald Trump, Trudeau said both leaders devoted their time to meeting with world leaders they don't have a chance to meet frequently with. He said he communicates regularly with Trump.

'Open lines' with Trump

"We'll continue to ensure we have open lines of communication any time we need them," he said.
On his last day of the forum that began Tuesday, he met with Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai for a panel discussion, and announced Canada will double its commitment to the Global Partnership for Education fund.

During a visit to Ottawa last spring, Yousafzai, an honorary Canadian citizen who survived a Taliban attack in 2012, encouraged Canada to take a global lead in ensuring more girls can go to school.

Earlier on Thursday, Trudeau met with the CEOs of Coca-Cola and IBM.

Past criticism of Hehr

Hehr faced criticism in December from a Calgary woman engaged in a class-action lawsuit against the federal government who said he was "very condescending" when she contacted his office regarding an issue related to benefits while on maternity leave.

Jennifer McCrea had been fighting on behalf of a group of mothers who say they were denied benefits while on maternity leave and contacted Hehr's office in October 2016 after being encouraged to speak to local Liberal MPs about her case.

She asked him pointedly why Ottawa continues to fight sick women — a "loaded question" to which he allegedly replied, "Well, Ms. McCrea, that is the old question, like asking … 'When did you stop beating your wife?'"

"I didn't respond (with) anything because my jaw was on the floor," McCrea recalled.
Hehr admitted to sometimes being "brash" and "inappropriate" after the complaint.

Feeling 'belittled'

Members of a thalidomide survivor group have also complained about feeling belittled after a meeting with Hehr, and accused him of making offensive statements about their life expectancies.

One survivor said Hehr said they didn't have it as bad as they did when they were kids, then went on to say: "Well you don't have it so bad. Everyone in Canada has a sob story.'"

The minister denied at least one of their claims and said he has apologized if some of his comments were misinterpreted.

Hehr was shuffled into the Sport and Disabilities portfolios last summer from Veterans Affairs.

Federal Sport and Disabilities Minister Kent Hehr has resigned from cabinet pending an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a statement from Davos, Switzerland, saying he had accepted Hehr's resignation pending the outcome of the probe.

"Harassment of any kind is unacceptable and Canadians have a right to live and work in environments free from harassment," he said.

"As a government, we take any allegations of misconduct extremely seriously, and we believe that it is important to support women who come forward with allegations and that is exactly what our government will do."

Science Minister Kirsty Duncan will take on the sport and disabilities portfolio.

Earlier in the day, Trudeau said he planned to speak to Hehr about allegations of sexual misconduct made on social media.

During a news conference to wrap up his trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trudeau was asked about allegations that women felt fearful about getting in the same elevator with Hehr at the Alberta Legislature, where he was a member from 2008 to 2015, and that Hehr had made unwanted sexually suggestive comments.

CBC News has learned that a representative from the Prime Minister's Office spoke with Kristin Raworth today about her tweets.

'Extremely seriously'

During the news conference, Trudeau also saluted the women who came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown, who stepped down overnight while denying any wrongdoing.

Trudeau said all allegations are taken "extremely seriously."

Trudeau has had to deal with other cases of allegations of sexual harassment and abuse in the Liberal Party, including:

'Duty to lead'

Alberta NDP Premier Rachel Notley issued a statement about the developments, praising the "bravery and resolve" of women who are speaking out.

"Generations of people have worked to get us to this point and no longer will they be sidelined and dismissed," she said.

"It matters how we treat one another. The changes we make today have to last. Governments at all levels have a duty to lead: with better resources and supports to protect victims, laws that create healthier workplaces, and safe avenues for people to speak out."

Patrick Brown's exit could actually leave the PCs better positioned to take on Wynne: Robyn Urback

Out of an awful situation, the party has an opening to equip itself with a stronger, more likable candidate

By Robyn Urback, CBC News Posted: Jan 25, 2018 5:33 AM ET

It was never really a question of whether the Ontario PCs would screw up the election this time around, but how.

A toddler always manages to find the one uncovered electrical outlet in the house. Your tire practically seeks out that little rusty nail lying imperceptibly on a five-lane highway. And the leader of the Ontario PC party will, ahead of a totally winnable election, score in his own net by promising to fund all religious schools or vowing to fire 100,000 public-sector workers.

Many will see now-former Ontario PC leader Patrick Brown's score-in-his-own-net moment as occurring sometime Wednesday evening, when he literally fled from reporters after making a few trembling remarks denying reports of serious sexual misconduct. But the PCs arguably bungled this one way earlier, before reporters would chase the Opposition leader down the steps at Queen's Park.

Patrick Brown chased by media as he flees Queen's Park
00:00 01:15
Patrick Brown chased by media as he flees Queen's Park1:15

Almost immediately after he left the podium, Brown's senior staff released a statement announcing their own resignations, noting that they had asked him to step down but that he had refused. The premier, the leader of the Ontario NDP and members of Brown's own caucus would all join the fray, turning the situation into a full-blown crisis within hours. In the early hours of Thursday morning, Brown finally announced his resignation.

There was certainly no way Brown could've survived this, but we should resist the urge to see this particular incident as Brown's own patented PC-screw-up moment. For one, sexual misconduct is not the same thing as an ill-conceived campaign flub: it is sinister, malignant, and reflects a fundamental deficiency as a person, not simply a politician.

Granted, these allegations have not been proven and Brown vehemently denies their veracity. Surely many Ontarians will believe him, and some will go so far as to think this is all a sinister scheme concocted by Premier Kathleen Wynne's team to win the election. For what it's worth, though, I personally believe these reports, based partly on the knowledge that multiple news organizations were investigating these claims, and partly on the credibility of the journalists who felt their stories had been substantiated enough to print.

Patrick Brown denies allegations
00:00 01:27
Patrick Brown denies allegations1:27

In any case, it would be shortsighted to see Wednesday evening as the Ontario Conservatives' boomerang torpedo moment; that process actually began nearly two years ago, when the party first elected Brown as its leader. It's just that the explosion only happened now.

Brown was always an odd pick for Ontario PC leader: a relatively unremarkable backbencher in Stephen Harper's government who managed to snag the provincial leadership from front-runner Christine Elliott, in part by signing up a whack of new members. He came off as a bit uncomfortable from the moment he accepted the victory, with both arms raised in the air, and continued to impress that sort of reluctant-man-on-the-dance-floor vibe as he navigated the first few challenges of his tenure.

There was his ham-fisted handling of Ontario's new sex-education curriculum, which he spoke against at a rally during the leadership campaign, then vowed to repeal in a letter sent to residents ahead of a 2016 east Toronto byelection. Brown subsequently did a complete about-face, saying he was actually strongly in support of the new curriculum and claimed that the letter had been sent out without his consent.

We still don't know what actually happened, but that doesn't matter: the debacle managed to alienate both social conservatives who saw a different Patrick Brown during the leadership campaign, and moderates, who were wary of Brown's socially conservative voting record.

His attempt to sell carbon pricing to his party was similarly clumsy: an effort to ram through a complete policy reversal without much of an explanation as to why. Meanwhile, questions started brewing about the fairness of the party's nomination process. And more recently, Brown introduced a host of new spending promises that would alienate the fiscal conservatives in his party, along with the already estranged social conservatives.

Ont PC Convention 20171125
Brown has always been the wrong guy to get the PCs their victory against Kathleen Wynne's Liberals in the upcoming June provincial election. (Chris Young/THE CANADIAN PRESS)

To be fair, there is logic in trying to create a big-tent conservative party in Ontario, which has proven again and again that it has little appetite for the austere type of governance the PCs routinely try to sell. Indeed, polling has shown Ontarians generally like the Liberals' policies — they just don't care much for Kathleen Wynne — which explains why Brown would try to adopt Liberal ideas and make them his own.

But Brown has always been the wrong guy to finally get the PCs their victory: he's a bit too awkward, far too enigmatic and he's never really given the impression that he will govern by conviction, instead of convenience. Say what you will about Wynne, she appears to genuinely believe in the things she's doing. Brown rarely gave off the same impression.

The irony in this epic implosion is that with Brown now out of the leadership, the PCs might actually be better positioned to take on Wynne's Liberals in the June provincial election. No doubt it will be an enormous task, but there is an opportunity here for the party to equip itself with a stronger, more credible and, frankly, more likable candidate. Dare I say, there might actually be an opening for the Ontario PCs to score on the opposing net for a change.

Nova Scotia PC Leader Jamie Baillie forced out over allegations of 'inappropriate behaviour'

'My priority is my family and I ask that our privacy be respected,' Baillie writes on Twitter

Jamie Baillie has been forced out as leader of Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservative Party following an investigation into "allegations of inappropriate behaviour."

The party said it requested and accepted Baillie's resignation Wednesday morning, following an independent, third-party investigation arranged by the PC Party after it learned of the allegations.

That investigation concluded Baillie had breached the Nova Scotia House of Assembly policy on the prevention and resolution of harassment in the workplace, according to the party.

At a news conference Wednesday afternoon, party president Tara Miller and caucus chair Karla MacFarlane would not provide details about the allegations, but indicated sexual harassment was one of the claims.

Sources told CBC News the allegations involve a female staffer in the caucus office.

'No one is above the law'

MacFarlane, who is the MLA for Pictou West, will become interim leader of the province's PCs.
She said the party became aware of the allegations — which involve one complainant — late in December and took immediate action, bringing in an "experienced" investigator. She would not identify the investigator.

Miller said the party received the report on Tuesday night and made the decision to request Baillie's resignation. That decision was supported unanimously by the caucus, she said.

Neither Miller nor MacFarlane would say whether the allegations have been forwarded to police, but a Halifax Regional Police spokesperson said the force has not received a report.

"I am protecting the individual," MacFarlane said when asked by reporters why she couldn't comment on whether police had been informed. "It's a delicate, delicate issue and it's been a difficult process and we're respecting those involved at their request."

MacFarlane said she felt disappointed and sad about the revelations.

"It's a lot to digest. But as we all know, no one is above the law."

Baillie wrote on Twitter that he resigned Wednesday morning as party leader, citing "personal reasons." He also resigned as MLA for Cumberland South.

"My priority is my family and I ask that our privacy be respected," Baillie wrote. "It has been an honour and privilege to lead the PC Party for the past seven years, and to represent the people of Cumberland South.

"I thank them both for the opportunity to serve."

Leadership convention

Baillie had announced last fall that he would be leaving politics after leading the PC Party since 2010, but said at the time he would remain the head of the party until a new leader was chosen.

No date has yet been set for the PC leadership convention, but MacFarlane said Wednesday more information about that will be released in the coming weeks.

Kings North MLA John Lohr and Pictou East MLA Tim Houston are the only two candidates currently seeking the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative leadership.

Baillie, a chartered accountant, became PC leader in 2010 and led the party through two elections. The party won 17 seats in the 2017 provincial election, an increase of seven, and formed the Official Opposition.

Despite the advances, Baillie soon started talking about stepping down as leader. He said he had hoped to at least reduce the Liberals to a minority government in the last election, but they retained their majority.

'It's shocking'

Rob Batherson, the former president of the Nova Scotia Progressive Conservative Party who has known Baillie for years, said he found out about the allegations Wednesday afternoon.

Batherson ran with Baillie in the last provincial election for the Halifax Citadel-Sable Island riding.
"It's shocking, it's not the Jamie that we know or knew," Batherson said. "It's difficult to square the finding of sexual harassment with the person that I know, knew [and] worked with."

Batherson said he attended the news conference to support Miller.

"During the MLA expense scandal in 2010, I thought you couldn't have a darker day for a party president and obviously this is a tough day for Tara and the party," he said.

  3. When I found Dr. DODO I was in desperate need of bringing my ex lover back. He left me for another woman. It happened so fast and I had no say in the situation at all. He just dumped me after 6 years with no explanation. I contact Dr.DODO through his website and He told me what i need to do before he can help me and i did what he told me to, after i provided what he wanted, he cast a love spell to help us get back together. Shortly after he did his spell, my boyfriend started texting me again and felt horrible for what he just put me through. He said that I was the most important person in his life and he knows that now. We moved in together and he was more open to me than before and then he started spending more time with me than before. Ever since Dr. DODO helped me, my partner is very stable, faithful and closer to me than before. I highly recommends Dr. DODO to anyone in need of help.
