Local roofer’s satirical video about charging ‘liberal’ customers more for services goes viral, draws heavy criticism

The clip’s creator, Joshua Bigger (pictured), has been making amateur comedy videos online for several years. Last week, a company representative from Bigger’s Lincoln-based roofing business told blogTO that the video “was just a joke” and they were “honestly surprised” so many people thought it was real.

Over the weekend, a video of a Niagara roofing contractor allegedly admitting to price discrimination based on political affiliation went viral on social media.

The 30-second clip, reposted by a one “sheepkingjb” on Twitter, depicts Joshua Bigger – owner of Lincoln-based Bigger Roofing – filming himself on a job site, claiming to have over-charged a property owner because he or she is “liberal”.

“Just another really expensive roof,” Bigger says in the video, “liberal’s driving a BMW, so I charge ‘em around 15 grand. Yeah – that’s what you get for being liberal.”

Bigger then goes on to say that he doesn’t care if the owner sees the video as “there’s no one else to roof because your Liberal government made everyone lazy by giving them f**king CERB…so I can treat people like s**t, act like a f**king a**hole and they’ve still gotta pay me for their expensive s**t whether they like it or not. And they gotta pay me 25 per cent more because they’re liberal.”

The reposted video, which was originally published by Bigger himself at the end of May, was watched by some 700,000 viewers and quote and/or retweeted a collective 10,000 times on Twitter alone. It was also spread across a number of other social media platforms, including TikTok and Instagram.

Calls to “cancel” Bigger and see his family-owned business closed came in swiftly and in abundance.

“Someone needs to find out his insurance company & contact them,” implored Twitter user Sharon Wood. “They will drop him in a hot minute & then he will lose his bond. No one will hire him after that.”

“Looks like he just invited young roofing contractors to open a business in Niagara, there’ll be plenty of business and no real competition,” said Steve M.

“Is there anyway possible that we can watch in real time the decline of his business due to his stance? If there is any person out there who is going to document that. Please tag me, so that I may enjoy the show,” added another commenter.

While The Niagara Independent was unable to get ahold of Bigger before publication, a representative from Bigger Roofing told blogTO last week that the offending clip is a “satirical video” and the company is aware it would be illegal to discriminate based on political affiliation and has “never charged more”.

According to the representative, Bigger has “been making these types of videos for almost a decade.”

Indeed, the Niagara business owner – who has multiple online names and personas, including Best Damn Roofer, Mr. Freedom, and Lord BIGGTIME – is very active on social media and has built a significant online presence over the last several years.

On Facebook, he has close to 29,000 followers. On Instagram, he has nearly 34,000. While on TikTok, he has 82,000.

Bigger’s YouTube channel, which he started in 2018, has close to 50,000 subscribers and nearly 10 million video views. His videos are an eclectic mix of comedy skits, homemade songs, and vlogs. He often pokes fun at “liberals” and “libtards”.

Much of his content over the winter and spring months centred around his support for and attendance at various anti-mandate events, including the Ottawa trucker convoy.

In his guise as Mr. Freedom, Bigger has seemingly helped organize a number of ‘Freedom Movement’ rallies around the region since February, most recently participating in a two-day Freedom Tour event held on the Niagara Regional Exhibition grounds in Welland last month.

Photos and videos posted by Bigger on social media indicate the self-employed contractor was still on the job as of Monday this week.

editors@blogto.com

A Niagara region roofer is facing outrage, accused of admitting to price gouging customers based entirely on their perceived political affiliations. "Perceived" being the operative word, as the guy's methods could be criticized as dodgy at best.

Founded in 2012 by the husband-and-wife team of Josh and Tawnya, Bigger Roofing has developed a bit of a following as a right-wing and anti-mandate social media presence.

In the owner's latest online tirade, he basically admits to price gouging. A company representative claims that the video was pure satire, but was unable to provide a convincing argument that the video was filmed in jest.

In the clip, Josh from Bigger Roofing brags about charging customers he thinks are Liberal voters extra, though his identifier of customers' views boils down to their choice of car.

For whatever reason, Josh thinks that BMW — the favourite auto brand of finance bros and aging lawyers — is somehow the flagship vehicle brand of the liberal movement. If the Toyota Prius had feelings, they would be very hurt right now.

"Just another really expensive roof," rants the right-wing roofer. "Liberals driving a BMW so I charged them 15 grand, and uh yeah, that's what you get for being liberal."

"I don't care if they watch this video either way, because there's no one else to roof because of your Liberal government, they made everybody lazy by giving them f***ing CERBs and nobody wants to work."

"So I can treat people like shit, act like a f***ing asshole, and they still gotta pay me for their expensive shit whether they like it or not and they have to spend 25 per cent more because they're liberal. Welcome to the real world."

In a confusing twist, or maybe just a case of really poor math skills, Josh from Bigger Roofing has posted a video claiming that he is offering 10 per cent off non-liberal voters.

So wait, if Liberal voters are paying 25 per cent more, and everyone else is paying ten per cent less, who is paying the regular price?

Josh the roofer has also been a regular at freedom convoys and other related rallies, appearing wearing a kilt and a t-shirt reading "God, Guns, and Trump," which should tell you everything you really need to know about the guy.

blogTO has reached out to Bigger Roofing to provide the company with an opportunity to comment.

A representative for the company claims that "It's a satirical video that isn't real. He's been making these types videos for almost a decade. We are honestly surprised so many people think it's real."

Based on videos showing Josh from Bigger Roofing appearing at right-wing rallies and other attempts at trolling the left on social media, it's hard to chalk this up to a one-off incident.

The representative claims that the company has "never charged more. Ever. In fact, we have given away a free roof almost every year we've been in business. We donate free labour to community projects that need a hand (like Boy Scouts, our town library, a local mason lodge, to name a few) We support local sports teams. It was just a joke. It isn't real. At all."

They conveniently claim that the pro-Trump t-shirt "was sent by a fan (of his satirical videos) from the United States" and state that they are aware of laws protecting consumers against "unconscionable prices."

"Of course I'm aware it's illegal and it would be horrible business practices — IF it were real. But it's not. We wouldn't be in business for 12+ years if it were."

Their argument failing to gain ground, the representative admits "I guess you would have to know him personally."

Just a thought; if someone has to know you personally personally to appreciate your supposed satire (which you may or may not actually believe) maybe social media isn't the best place to share it.

Ottawa convoy protest organizer Pat King is now facing perjury and
obstruction of justice charges related to testimony he gave at his
bail review hearing last week.

King was arrested on Feb. 18 on charges related to his involvement in
the three-week protest against COVID-19 restrictions that overran the
streets of Ottawa.

He was denied bail on Feb. 25, but on Wednesday last week King
appeared in court for a bail review so his lawyers could argue for his
release while he awaits his trial.

The next day, the Crown announced it would lay perjury and obstruction
of justice charges against him.

The three counts of perjury and three counts of obstruction of
justice, as well as the reasons for the charges, were read aloud to
King in court Tuesday.

The details of the testimony that led to the allegations are protected
by a publication ban.

These latest accusations are in addition to 10 charges related to
King’s involvement in the downtown Ottawa protest earlier this year.

The previous charges include mischief, intimidation, obstructing
police and disobeying a court order.

King’s hearing came to an abrupt halt last Wednesday when it appeared
his lawyer’s computer was hacked in the middle of the proceedings.
Lawyer David Goodman later said the threat wasn’t as serious as
previously thought, and no files were compromised.

The hearing was adjourned the next day to give King’s legal team time
to process the new charges, leaving King visibly disappointed with his
head in his hands.

Since then, he’s tapped a new lawyer to fight for his release and
defend him against the mounting number of charges.

Ottawa lawyer Natasha Calvinho told the court Tuesday she has been
retained as King’s full counsel, and asked for some time to get up to
speed on his case.

King will appear in court next week to reschedule the rest of his bail
review hearing.

On behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel Garner, P.C., M.P. thank
you for your email. Our office appreciates the time you took to get in
touch with the MP. Due to the high volume of email correspondence our
office receives, below is a guide on how your email will be responded
to:

If you are a constituent of Calgary Nose Hill:

Queries regarding government programs, policies and operations take
time to research, contact appropriate departments and collate
information for dissemination to you. If you have provided your full
contact details on your query, your email will be responded to as
necessary.

If your query is case related (i.e. immigration, CPP, EI, tax issues,
etc.), consent forms will need to be filled out before your file can
be activated. If you have not yet filled out our office’s consent
form, a staff member will be in contact with you.

If you are not a constituent of Calgary Nose Hill:

If you are not a Calgary Nose Hill resident, given the high volume of
emails we receive, your email will be reviewed and filed as
INFORMATION. If the email is Critic portfolio in nature, it will be
responded to as necessary.
If you are contacting MP Rempel Garner to review your case work,
please first contact your local MP for assistance.
If your email is a form letter:

Thank you for submitting this form letter. Due to the high volume of
emails M.P. Rempel Garner’s office receives, we are unable to
individually reply to form letters, particularly from non
constituents. Form letters are template letters generated by
organizations, webforms and other sources on a given issue. However,
M.P. Rempel Garner does review and consider information received from
all form letters.

If you are a constituent and would like a response regarding the
specific issue raised in your form letter, please email M.P. Rempel
Garner’s office individually at this email address with “Constituent -
(Insert subject)” in the subject of your email. This helps us to
identify constituents who wish to receive a response among the
hundreds of form letter responses our office receives on any given
day.

Again, thank you for reaching out to our office.

Invites:
If you have invited MP Rempel Garner to your event, please note that
decisions on what events to attend are completed on a bi-monthly
basis. As our office receives hundreds of invitations each week, our
office will only contact you if MP Rempel Garner will be attending.
Updates on MP Rempel Garner’s Work:
If you wish to know what is happening in Calgary Nose Hill and the job
MP Rempel Garner is doing for you in Ottawa, please sign up for her
e-newsletter on her website: https://mprempel.ca/

*M.P. Rempel Garner's office has a zero tolerance policy for
threatening, abusive, or aggressive language or behaviour towards the
Member and their staff. Phone calls, voicemails and emails containing
threatening or abusive language will result in the termination of
communications.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,
Office of The Honourable Michelle Rempel Garner, P.C., M.P.

Date: 20151223

Docket: T-1557-15

Fredericton, New Brunswick, December 23, 2015

PRESENT:        The Honourable Mr. Justice Bell

BETWEEN:

DAVID RAYMOND AMOS

Plaintiff

and

HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN

Defendant

ORDER

(Delivered orally from the Bench in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on
December 14, 2015)

The Plaintiff seeks an appeal de novo, by way of motion pursuant to
the Federal Courts Rules (SOR/98-106), from an Order made on November
12, 2015, in which Prothonotary Morneau struck the Statement of Claim
in its entirety.

At the outset of the hearing, the Plaintiff brought to my attention a
letter dated September 10, 2004, which he sent to me, in my then
capacity as Past President of the New Brunswick Branch of the Canadian
Bar Association, and the then President of the Branch, Kathleen Quigg,
(now a Justice of the New Brunswick Court of Appeal).  In that letter
he stated:

As for your past President, Mr. Bell, may I suggest that you check the
work of Frank McKenna before I sue your entire law firm including you.
You are your brother’s keeper.

Frank McKenna is the former Premier of New Brunswick and a former
colleague of mine at the law firm of McInnes Cooper. In addition to
expressing an intention to sue me, the Plaintiff refers to a number of
people in his Motion Record who he appears to contend may be witnesses
or potential parties to be added. Those individuals who are known to
me personally, include, but are not limited to the former Prime
Minister of Canada, The Right Honourable Stephen Harper; former
Attorney General of Canada and now a Justice of the Manitoba Court of
Queen’s Bench, Vic Toews; former member of Parliament Rob Moore;
former Director of Policing Services, the late Grant Garneau; former
Chief of the Fredericton Police Force, Barry McKnight; former Staff
Sergeant Danny Copp; my former colleagues on the New Brunswick Court
of Appeal, Justices Bradley V. Green and Kathleen Quigg, and, retired
Assistant Commissioner Wayne Lang of the Royal Canadian Mounted
Police.

In the circumstances, given the threat in 2004 to sue me in my
personal capacity and my past and present relationship with many
potential witnesses and/or potential parties to the litigation, I am
of the view there would be a reasonable apprehension of bias should I
hear this motion. See Justice de Grandpré’s dissenting judgment in
Committee for Justice and Liberty et al v National Energy Board et al,
[1978] 1 SCR 369 at p 394 for the applicable test regarding
allegations of bias. In the circumstances, although neither party has
requested I recuse myself, I consider it appropriate that I do so.

AS A RESULT OF MY RECUSAL, THIS COURT ORDERS that the Administrator of
the Court schedule another date for the hearing of the motion.  There
is no order as to costs.

“B. Richard Bell”
Judge

already) you will find the text of just two of many emails I had sent

To: David Amos <david.raymond.amos333@gmail.com>

Attorney General of Canada and now a Justice of the Manitoba Court of
Queen’s Bench, Vic Toews; former member of Parliament Rob Moore;
former Director of Policing Services, the late Grant Garneau; former

Judge

Below after the CBC article about your concerns (I made one comment
already) you will find the text of just two of many emails I had sent

lawsuit now before the Federal Court of Canada?
