Inside one Conservative MP’s ‘Restore the North’ tour, a Canadian take on Charlie Kirk’s movement
Jamil Jivani’s campus tour puts a spotlight on struggling young men

With one guiding question, Conservative MP Jamil Jivani hopes to expand a movement and ignite a national conversation.
“How do we restore the North? ” Jivani asked roughly 50 people at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) last Friday.
“How do you make sure we restore the promise of Canada for as many people in this great country as possible?”
Jivani, 37, had already launched his “Restore the North” initiative last month, aimed at addressing policy gaps to help young men, a demographic that he says is overrepresented in crime, overdose and homelessness statistics.
But following the assassination of American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, his initiative expanded into campus tours, creating an event that is part rally, part recruitment drive, and part debate.
Participants are given a mic to debate or discuss issues with three Conservative MPs sitting at the front of the room. It's a rotating cast, except for Jivani, who acts as the event’s host and main spokesperson.
It’s a northern facsimile and tribute to Kirk’s campus events, which drew thousands and were credited with spreading the MAGA message at American universities.
Last week's short tour of campuses in southern Ontario, including one Friday at UTM, attracted young men who say they feel dismayed by dwindling job prospects and frustrated by super-charged identity politics that popularized the concept of “toxic masculinity” — leaving them feeling alienated and questioning their ability to freely speak their minds, especially on university campuses.
CBC spoke to about 10 of the attendees at the Oct. 17 event in Mississauga.
They said they feel men — some participants specifying white men in particular — occupy the bottom rung of a hierarchy of identities, putting additional pressure on them in a sluggish job market. The unemployment rate for young men surged to 22 per cent earlier this year.

“This is my first opportunity to actually talk to someone that's in the government and about issues that have really concerned me,” said Brady Burns, a Brock University student.
“I just wanted to say this is my first time doing anything political in my community,” added Stefano Piscione, 20, while speaking at the mic. He said his struggles to find a job helped inform his belief that immigration levels should be slashed.
“It’s a big disservice to the people of this country when you import labour.”
“I think Jamil Jivani and other young MPs in the Conservative caucus are seeking to build on what the Conservatives have been building over the last number of years,” said Roth.
“When I was young, Conservative voters were old. And now Conservative voters are pretty young.”
A right-wing counterculture?
Jivani is a something of an ascendant figure in Canadian Conservative politics.
He rose in prominence following the publication of his 2018 book Why Young Men, in which he considers the root causes of radicalization in young men while also sharing his own story.
Once labelled “illiterate” by the Ontario education system, Jivani charts in the book how he chose to pursue academics instead of criminality. He ultimately graduated from Yale law school, where he met and befriended U.S. Vice-President JD Vance.
Jivani has been an impassioned advocate for young men, pre-dating his election to the House of Commons in 2024. In a preamble at the Restore the North event, he said his goal is to encourage young people to inspire hope and not to give up on themselves or their country.
He wrapped up the first slate of tour dates in mid-October, and though no additional dates have been announced, he said in a statement he looks forward to visiting more campuses soon.
Jivani stands out in Pierre Poilievre’s caucus as being willing to talk about potentially contentious subjects: he is an advocate for the rights of Christians, has called for the end of diversity, equality and inclusion programs and has criticized Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s brand of conservatism as “hollow.”
He was also the first in his party to call for the end of the temporary foreign worker program, which, months later, became the Conservative’s official position.
He said he believes the phenomenon of young men gravitating to conservative political parties can be linked to both economic and cultural worries, echoing New York Times columnist Ross Douthat’s argument that there is a conservative counter-culture movement in 2025.
“Liberal ideology has been so deeply embedded in so many institutions that young people who are looking for change are looking for a different way to respond to their circumstances,” he said.
Turning Point North?
Kirk was dubbed the “youth whisperer” for his ability to attract young people into the MAGA movement, and the ties to his Turning Point USA organization are explicit, not implied.
Jivani’s opening remarks referenced Kirk’s assassination and his activism on behalf of the American conservative movement, saying that Restore the North aims to have the “same type of energetic and enthusiastic conversations up here.”
Unlike Kirk’s appearances, popular in part because of his occasionally caustic and contemptuous responses to left-wing questioning, the majority of the questions the Conservative MPs took at the Mississauga event were friendly — though not necessarily mainstream.
Several audience members identified themselves as being part of the Dominion Society, a Canadian anti-immigration group that seeks to deport between four and eight million people living in Canada through what it calls “remigration."
When they put that idea to Jivani, the MP acknowledged the immigration system should be reformed — in line with his party’s position — but asked the audience member to “acknowledge it is complicated.”
“It’s going to take thinking about how we pull the different pieces of the Jenga tower out without disrupting things to a point where now our quality of life gets worse because we’ve been too disruptive,” he said.
“Look, my personal view on this is that a moratorium on immigration is not a bad idea, right?”
But having open debates is the point.
Jivani spent minutes before taking questions talking about the need to protect and expand freedom of expression.
Kirk attracted critics and condemnation for comments on race, claiming things like “prowling Blacks go around for fun to target white people,” and also religion, claiming “Islam is not compatible with Western civilization.” But the free exchange of ideas was central to his message — and he was shot while sitting underneath a sign that said “prove me wrong.”
The battle of protecting free speech on campuses has raged over the last decade, prompting Ontario to force colleges and universities to come up with “free speech policies” or face government spending cuts.
The issue of speech on campus was part of what compelled Burns to travel to the UTM event.
“I’ve experienced teachers and faculty repeatedly telling young people like myself that my opinions are wrong because they don’t fall within the left-leaning social norm,” he told the crowd and Jivani that day.
“Part of what we’re doing is we’re here, to make sure we signal to you, you’re not alone in the way that you might think,” Jivani responded, adding that students ought to be exposed to multiple points of view to be best prepared for the real world.
While leaving the event, Burns said Jivani’s response was “exactly what I was looking for.”

'Upside and risk'
Many of the attendants, including Piscione, also said they were affected by Kirk’s killing — even if they didn’t always agree with his views.
“It was a political assassination,” he said. “It’s sickening. It’s saying, well, if they disagree with him, they very much disagree with me.”
And there are those who disagree, who see a focus on young men as secondary to other equity-seeking groups who have faced barriers to opportunities, who disliked Kirk’s rhetoric and beliefs, and who call for Conservatives to focus on other things.
But to Roth, it’s a matter of taking a stand.
“Like so many things, there's both upside and risk,” she said. “But I don't think really strong political leadership ... can happen without taking on some risk.”

Jamil Jivani (born October 24, 1987) is a Canadian politician and lawyer who is the member of Parliament (MP) for Bowmanville—Oshawa North. A Conservative, Jivani was first elected to represent Durham in a 2024 by-election triggered by the resignation of former Conservative leader and leader of the Official Opposition Erin O'Toole. He previously worked as a special advisor to the premier of Ontario, Doug Ford, and was appointed as the advocate for community opportunities and to the Premier's Council on Equality of Opportunity.
Before entering politics, Jivani studied law at Yale University and practiced corporate law at Torys LLP. He later worked as a community-police relations activist, as a contributor for Postmedia and hosted a radio show on CFRB Newstalk 1010.
Early life and education
Jivani was born in Toronto, Ontario. His father is Muslim and his mother, Pam, is Christian.[1][2] His father is Kenyan, and was adopted and raised by a Muslim Indian family, hence the Indian surname. His mother is from the United Kingdom, and is of Scottish and Irish descent.[3][4][5] He grew up with his two sisters, raised by their mother in the Ontario city of Brampton.[3] Jivani also has two stepbrothers through his father side.[6] After attending Fletcher’s Creek Senior Public School, then Mississauga's Gordon Graydon Memorial Secondary School,[7] Jivani attended Humber College and York University.[8] In 2013, he earned his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.[9][10] Before attending law school, Jivani worked as a dishwasher and line cook in local Toronto area restaurants.[11]
While a student at Yale, Jivani was Program Director of the Yale Chapter of the Marshall-Brennan Constitutional Literacy Project[12] and President of the Yale Black Law Students Association.[13][14] He was also part of the Innovations in Policing Clinic, in which he authored a case study of police-community relations in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.[15]
At Yale, he was the best friend and a classmate of former Republican United States Senator from Ohio and Vice President of the United States, JD Vance.[16][17][18] Jivani also interned at the office of Cory Booker, the then-mayor of Newark, and current Democratic Senior United States Senator from New Jersey.[19] Jivani later revealed in 2020 that for a few years after law school, he was a card-carrying member of the Liberal Party of Canada.[19]
Career
Legal career
Following his graduation from Yale, he practiced corporate law at Torys LLP.[20] Jivani held research and teaching appointments at Osgoode Hall Law School.[21]
Activism
In 2013, Jivani founded the Policing Literacy Initiative (PLI), a youth-driven public education and advocacy group focused on community safety issues.[22] Jivani stated to CBC Metro Morning that the purpose of PLI is to spotlight progressive voices among police and community groups and work with them to find common solutions.[23] Jivani wrote an editorial for the National Post in February 2014 about his experience with Toronto Police and the Office of the Independent Police Review Director and the use of mediated conversations for citizen complaints.[24] In April 2014, Jivani co-produced with Dan Epstein a documentary about police-community relations titled "Crisis of Distrust: Police and Community in Toronto."[25][26]
Jivani was a 2013–14 Greater Toronto CivicAction Alliance DiverseCity Fellow.[27][28] As a Fellow, he co-founded Teachers Beyond the Classroom, which seeks to "help thousands of unemployed teachers transfer their skills to non-school employment opportunities across the Greater Toronto Area."[29] He served on the Board of Directors of the Children's Aid Society of Toronto until 2017.[30] On February 13, 2014, Jivani was named Yale Alumni Magazine's Newsmaker of the Week.[31]

Between 2016 until it closed in 2018, Jivani helped run the charity organization Our Ohio Renewal, founded by JD Vance, a friend from Yale; Jivani later stated the group's work was derailed because of his cancer diagnosis.[32]
Think Tank Fellow
In 2020, he was appointed senior fellow for Diversity and Empowerment at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute, a conservative, libertarian think tank affiliated with the US Atlas Network.[33][34] His association with the Institute ended in 2023.[35] He later became president of the Canada Strong and Free Network, but stepped down to announce his candidacy for the Conservative nomination in Durham.[36]
Punditry and dismissal from Bell
He has written about youth and equality issues for Huffington Post.[37] and has articles published frequently in Postmedia chains.[38]
On September 8, 2020, Bell Media announced that Jamil Jivani would host a new weekday nightly radio talk show Tonight with Jamil Jivani, from 10:00 PM – 11:00 PM. The show would air on CFRB and across the iHeart Radio Network.[39] In February 2021, Bell Media went under a corporate restructuring within its radio division. It was announced Jamil Jivani would move to the 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM time slot and his show would be rebranded as The Jamil Jivani Show.[40]
Jivani was later fired from Bell Media, which he claimed was due to him not conforming to Black stereotypes.[41] In August 2022, Jamil Jivani sued Bell Media for wrongful dismissal and breach of contract.[41] Bell filed a statement of defence, claiming that Jivani was let go because he showed disdain for concerns raised by Bell management over issues such as avoiding pushing back against COVID-19 misinformation and misgendering Demi Lovato.[42]
Political career
On December 11, 2019, the Government of Ontario appointed Jivani as the province's first Advocate for Community Opportunities. In this role, and as a Special Advisor to the Premier, Jivani opened lines of communication between communities and the government to empower community members and enabled them to increase their participation in government decision-making.[43][44] Critics, such as his former mentor Neil Price, felt that Jivani used his role to criticize the communities that he was supposed to uplift.[3] He was reappointed on April 1, 2022, but resigned on June 9 after criticizing Education Minister Stephen Lecce on social media over the closure of schools and vaccine passports during the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario.[45]
Jivani moderated the first unofficial debate during the 2022 Conservative Party of Canada leadership election where he took aim at Patrick Brown, who skipped the debate by arguing that he was manipulating diaspora politics to boost his campaign. An official working for Brown said that the party should welcome new Canadians to the party.[46]
Member of Parliament
On April 20, 2023, Jivani announced that he would run for the Conservative nomination in Durham riding, following the resignation of Erin O'Toole.[47] On August 20, 2023, he won the nomination race, defeating Theresa Corless, a former Durham Catholic School Board chair.[38]
He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons as a Conservative for the Ontario riding of Durham in a by-election held on March 4, 2024.[48] Jivani's victory speech criticized "the liberal elites who run the Ontario Ministry of Education in this province". When asked by reporters, Education Minister Stephen Lecce dismissed Jivani's comments as his concern.[49] While Progressive Conservative Premier Doug Ford responded to Jivani's comments by stating that while he wished the best for Jivani, Ford believed that he helped launch Jivani's career.[50] Upon re-election on April 28, 2025 Jivani revisited his criticism of Ford during a post victory interview with the CBC, in which he dismissed Ford's political acumen and called him an "opportunist", stating that Ford "has taken the provincial conservatives and turned it into something hollow."[51]
Political views
Jivani has been characterized as a black conservative[52] and a leading proponent of national conservatism in Canada.[53][54] He has advocated for national conservative ideas about nationalism, the role of government, and race[53] and Canada returning to the ideals of the Reform Party.[55] Jivani has stated that his views were shaped by his father who abandoned his family when he was in elementary school by arguing that he was trying to find male role models.[3]
Race and culture
Jivani views U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as a trailblazer for diversity.[56] Jivani has praised American rapper Kanye West and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith for standing up to what he sees as "cancel culture" after West was criticized for wearing a white lives matter shirt and Smith over her views about COVID-19.[57]
In July 2020, Jivani supported the Government of Ontario decision to eliminate academic streaming in Grade 9 and most suspensions that impacted young students in the province. According to The Globe and Mail, he views Black Lives Matter movement as "anti-family fringe race activists" that hate the nuclear family and capitalism and has viewed the term “systemic racism" with skepticism.[3] Jivani has suggested that terms such as "systemic racism" as well as "white privilege" have advanced critical race theory which he believes is an issue in Canada.[58]
Crime and extremism
In March 2014, Jivani advocated for policy changes to the Toronto Police Services Board for police-community contacts and "carding." He argues that people's identity should not be the reason why they could be stopped by police.[59][60] He has admitted to facing similar incidents. He is a critic of the defund the police movement arguing that they do not represent the "Black Community".[3][61] However, he has advocated for criminal justice reform by admitting that police officers must treat people with respect, calling for mandating body cameras for police,[62] and has praised then Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders for attempting to reduce Toronto Police budget.[63]
In his book, Why Young Men: Rage Race and the Crisis of Identity he suggested that poverty and lack of "validation in mainstream society" were factors behind the cause of crime.[64] He also added in a later interview that lack of opportunity and inadequate social services as causes behind crime. A few years later, he blamed social media. He also suggested that the hip-hop industry, which he believes is galvanizing "gangster culture" should be investigated for "the role in causing crime."[3][64] Previously in 2012, when writing for the Huffington Post, Jivani criticized then-Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and then immigration minister Jason Kenney for their remarks on the cause behind Toronto shootings as demeaning. When Ford suggested "immigration law" and Kenney suggested "foreign gangsters" as caused he argued that it was similar to tactics used by the Mitt Romney and criticized then Prime Minister Stephen Harper for failing to condemn them both.[65]
Jivani praised federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, then-Minnesota Democratic congressman Keith Ellison, University of Toronto professor of psychology, Jordan Peterson, as positive inspirations for young males to counter extremism.[66]
Conservatism
Jivani previously described that he held liberal views for a few years after law school but grew out of those views as he grew older[19] and considers conservatism as a form of counterculture.[54] Even though he praised previous leader Erin O'Toole's character, he was critical of O'Toole not trying to appeal to the Conservative grassroots.[67]
Jivani classified Quebec's Bill 96, which would provide most government and business services to be offered exclusively in French, as an example of national conservatism being implemented in Canada.[68]

Sexual violence oversight teams only working with half of N.B. police forces
5 remaining forces will join program over next 2 years to improve police response to sexual assault
Frontline
workers in the field of gender-based violence are working with four of
New Brunswick's nine police forces to review closed cases of sexual
violence crimes. (Twitter)Frontline workers in the field of gender-based violence are set up to review criminal cases of sexual assault at four of New Brunswick's nine police forces.
The number falls short of a timeline that would have seen each force working with an independent oversight committee by this April.
The committees look at closed sexual assault cases to identify any gaps, missed steps or potential biases police officers had during investigations.
The oversight role can lead to improvements in police response to sexual violence or even cases being reopened, according to Jenn Richard, director of strategic development for Sexual Violence New Brunswick.
New Brunswick made national news in 2017 for having the country's highest rate of unfounded sexual assault cases, meaning officers did not believe a crime had occurred.
First launched with the Kennebecasis Valley Regional Police Force in 2021, the committees are now working with municipal forces in Saint John, Fredericton and Woodstock and review cases on a quarterly or annual basis.
"[Police officers] are more aware of the services that may exist in their community, which I think is really important for survivors, not just for their own healing, but it also helps them stay engaged in the justice process, which is a benefit to everyone."
How police forces and activists against sexual violence are working together
Teams may overlap in geographically close areas, Richard said. There's also a team working with New Brunswick RCMP.
Similar programs exist in other provinces, including Ontario and Alberta. They're based on work done by Sunny Mariner, who developed the model through her work at the Ottawa Rape Crisis Centre in 2017.
Richard previously told CBC News all nine police forces in New Brunswick would be working with the oversight committees by the end of the current fiscal year. Logistical challenges have delayed that timeline, she said, and she now hopes the remaining forces will be participating within the next year or year-and-a-half.

"We've also done a presentation to the New Brunswick Association of Chiefs of Police, and they've all responded positively, so we're pretty optimistic that things are going to roll ahead," she said.
The Edmundston Police Force and the BNPP Regional Police Force, serving communities northeast of Bathurst, confirmed to CBC News that they will participate in the program. Police in Grand Falls, Miramichi and Bathurst didn't respond to requests for comment.
Head of police chiefs wants review process to stay
Woodstock Chief Gary Forward, who's also the president of the New Brunswick Association of Chiefs of Police, said the oversight teams are a step in the right direction.
"If we see through these types of partnerships the opportunity to be better, then we need to not only embrace that, but we need to make sure that moving forward we have it in place," he said.
His department had its first audit with the team in 2023. Over the course of a few days, the team members examined records, files and details about the investigative processes of closed cases of sexual violence.
The files never left the building, Forward said, and team members signed a nondisclosure agreement before reviewing them. Some information, like personal medical information, was also redacted.

Brunswick Association of Chiefs of Police. (Jacques Poitras/CBC)
After they finished with the files, the team put together a report for the Woodstock force recommending ways to improve their investigative processes going forward.
"There was some very helpful information there," Forward said.
Forward said he wants the auditing process to continue at least yearly. The goal is that officers will learn from each audit, he said, so that the force can proactively address any shortcomings in the investigative process.
Woodstock police also received specialized training from Sexual Violence New Brunswick in 2023, Forward said. They were joined by officers from the Fredericton force and the RCMP.
"It demonstrates that the public safety services in New Brunswick are very aware this is something we need to be on top of and be a part of."
Recommendations about police response still not public
Bettering police response to crimes of sexual violence gained momentum across Canada following a 2017 Globe and Mail investigation that revealed police officers were often dismissing victim allegations as unfounded, depriving them of thorough, trauma-informed investigations.
The Globe's investigation found New Brunswick had the highest percentage of unfounded cases in the country, leading the province to perform an audit of sex crime investigations from 2010 to 2014.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety then put a working group together, made up of advocates in the field and police force associations, to compile formal recommendations about how New Brunswick police officers can improve their response to crimes of sexual violence.
Sexual Violence New Brunswick was part of that work. Richard confirmed to CBC News the recommendations were delivered to the Department of Justice and Public Safety at least two years ago, if not earlier. She also told CBC News in 2022 the recommendations would soon be made public.
That never happened.
The Department of Justice and Public Safety confirmed in an email that the task force made nine recommendations, but would not share them, nor say why they were never made public. In a followup email, the department said it's consulting with stakeholders on a release date.
"I couldn't tell you why they're not public," Richard said."I've also been asking that myself. There has been a lot of really excellent progress that has been made on those recommendations. It's something to actually show off."

This is a subject that would conflict with our premier's optimistic view of the state of the province.
Canada is too soft on crime and people get released on bail when they shouldn't.

You can thank a previous government that abused the bail process—one of several abuses—to the point that the Supreme Court had to set rules based on something other than optics.

Yea Right
Reply to Denis Van Humbeck
Yes, there was. People were being denied bail purely for the optics of being "tough on crime", regardless of their actual offence. It resulted in individual wealth mattering more than individual accused or individual crime.
And since some people who couldn't afford bail were being held in remand longer than their sentence would have been with a trial within a reasonable period, we ended up with the limits the SCOC has set in place.
That's what the abuse was. People effectively serving longer sentences without having received a trial, simply because they were poor.
Reply to G. Timothy Walton
Ah wrong. SCOC should not be allowed to set limits.

The government has sat on the report because the minister of public safety does not agree with it. As usual people have to do the job of the government like they did with the homeless file.
Like the police chief said this idea will only help to make the police forces better over time. There will always be a few members that will not change but maybe they will decrease in number over time.

Sounds like a lot of duplication.

New harassment policy in works after allegations against Speaker
Legislative administration committee is setting up sub-group to write
policy, says David Coon

Speaker Chris Collins. Details about the allegations have not been
made public. (CBC News)

Members of the legislative administration committee want a more robust
harassment policy specifically for the legislature, according to Green
Party Leader David Coon.
A sub-group of the committee is drafting a new policy, which "will go
above and beyond the workplace harassment policy for general
government," Coon, a member of the committee, said during the CBC New
Brunswick Political Panel podcast this week.
Speaker Collins to fight 'politically driven' harassment allegation
Mystery swirls around who will run for Liberals in Moncton Centre
The decision follows harassment allegations revealed last week by
Premier Brian Gallant against Speaker Chris Collins.
Gallant suspended the Moncton Centre MLA from caucus over a complaint
he harassed a former employee of the legislative assembly.
Collins, who was planning to run in the September provincial election,
will fight the allegations, according to his lawyer, T.J. Burke.

Filling policy gaps
The legislative administration committee has agreed the clerk of the
legislature will select an independent investigator to examine the
complaint. It has also begun work to clarify issues with the
harassment policy with respect to the allegations against the Speaker.
"The decision to do that reflects that there was a gap at the
legislative assembly," Coon said.
The Liberals were criticized by opposition panel members for their
response to the complaint. Four of the five panellists said the
government failed to follow the existing harassment policy in not
taking action when it learned there might be a complaint.
Green Party Leader David Coon says the legislative administration
committee is going to draft a new harassment policy. (CBC News)
Gallant learned of a possible complaint in February but has said his
office couldn't act until the official complaint was filed April 5.
But the Progressive Conservatives were quick to point to the policy
that says senior officials must take action about harassment "whether
or not a complaint is filed."
PC member Ted Flemming said on the panel that he was pleased to see an
independent investigation because he doesn't trust the executive
branch to get to the bottom of it.
There is a pattern of shrouding the truth, said the MLA, pointing to
scandals such as Atcon and inflated property taxes.
"We're not able to get thNDP Leader Jennifer McKenzie took exception
to Flemming's comparisons,
saying the process should be followed and communicated clearly to the
public and shouldn't be politicized.
McKenzie said the rights of both Collins and the complainant should be
respected and due process given.
Speaker Chris Collins says he'll fight the harassment allegations. (CBC)
People's Alliance Leader Kris Austin said time is of a factor with the
investigation since it's an election year and Collins was committed to
running. Austin pitched a 60-day deadline for the investigation.
Gallant has said Collins could not run as a Liberal candidate while
suspended from caucus.
Rousselle responds
Attorney General Serge Rousselle told the panel the topic should not
be discussed. He said the harassment policy is being followed and it
would be "inappropriate" to comment on the matter during the
investigation.
Attorney General Serge Rousselle says the Collins case shouldn't be
discussed while an investigation is underway. (CBC News)
Rousselle also dismissed calls for a full inquiry.
"It could jeopardize the confidentiality of this process and
discourage other people from coming forward with their own complaints
for the fear of publicity that would follow," he said.
He said it's the government's understanding the complainant does not
want a full inquiry either.
