Evgeny Lebedev is the London-based owner of the Independent, the
Evening Standard and London Live – together ESI Media.
Born in Moscow, Evgeny spent his early years living a stone’s throw
from the Kremlin.
His father Alexander took a job with the foreign service of the KGB
when Evgeny was eight years old, and the family moved to London.
Alexander’s job was to report on the goings on in the financial sector
in the City of London – it would prove good training for the
unfettered capitalism of 90s Russia.
In 2009, Evgeny bought three-quarters of the renowned London newspaper
the Evening Standard for a pound. The Standard, which has a history
dating back to 1827, was in dire straits, haemorrhaging readers and
losing £20 million a year in the face of tough competition from free
news available on the Internet.
However, Evgeny pioneered a rebranding and, in October 2009, made the
Standard free. It was the first major British paper to do so, relying
on higher advertising rates, rather than the cover price, to make the
paper profitable. Immediately circulation rocketed to some 650,000.
The bold move paid off, and the paper quickly won a host of plaudits
and awards along the way, particularly in recognition of the way it
had retained its high quality values. Now read by an estimated 2
million people, the Standard is – for the first time in decades –
making a profit.
In March 2010 Evgeny stepped in to save another struggling paper, the
Independent. Once again purchasing the paper for a pound, Evgeny
oversaw a relaunch and redesign of the famous paper. He then launched
a brand new national publication, the i, which was a stripped down
version of the Independent selling for fifty pence a copy. The i
newspaper was designed to appeal to commuters who are in a hurry, but
don’t want to be subjected to dumbed down tabloid fodder.
The i has gone from strength to strength, and became National
Newspaper of the Year in 2015. In February 2016, it was announced that
Independent Press Ltd had reached an agreement to sell the i to
Johnston Press, and that the Independent would become digital-only
from March that year.
As well as his business interests, Evgeny is a writer, commentator and
patron of the arts.
His journalism has seen him travel around the world to interview
global leaders including Hamid Karzai, Mikhael Gorbachev and Alexander
Lukashenko. His other projects have included documenting the plight of
child soldiers in the Central African Republic with Unicef, meeting
and interviewing the Ku Klux Klan at their Arkansas backwoods
headquarters and exploring the drug wars in Mexico. These projects
have produced a series of articles and broadcasts in Vanity Fair, GQ,
Vogue, the Guardian, the BBC and elsewhere.
Evgeny has spearheaded fundraising campaigns across his papers for
several years. In 2013-14 he ran an appeal to protect elephants from
poachers, while in 2014-15 he led the homeless veteran campaign,
working to get ex-army members off the street. This year the Great
Ormond Street campaign raised more than £3.5 million, making it the
most successful Christmas appeal in the history of the Independent.
Committed to conservation, Evgeny has travelled to Siberia to help
save the Amur tiger and leopard species. He also spends time in
Africa, working to support the efforts of several countries to save
the endangered African elephant from extinction.
Evgeny is a British citizen and lives near Regent’s Park in central
London. His personal interests include the theatre, art and
literature.

George Osborne’s financial conduct chief faces chill May wind

Andrew Bailey had barely got his feet under the desk when political
upheaval landed him with a new boss and a changed attitude towards the
City
A lot has changed since George Osborne announced Andrew Bailey as new
head of the Financial Conduct Authority less than six months ago.
Osborne was then in his post-election pomp and seen as the most likely
successor to David Cameron. He had ousted Martin Wheatley, Bailey’s
predecessor, for being too tough on the banks and declared interim
boss Tracey McDermott out of the running without warning her.
But Bailey, who started on 1 July, had barely got his feet under the
desk before Theresa May replaced Osborne with Philip Hammond, whose
views on regulation we don’t yet know. The FCA is, of course, set up
as an independent watchdog, but it can’t help notice the way the
political wind is blowing. After May’s attack on “the privileged few”,
Osborne’s push to cosy up to the City may not be so fashionable. So
it’s a great week for Bailey, who joined from the Bank of England, to
face questions at the FCA’s annual meeting on Tuesday and then from
Andrew Tyrie and the gang at the Treasury committee the next day.
Potential subjects for discussion include the dropping-off of FCA
fines to a trickle this year, delays in getting new firms authorised
and staffing levels that appear to be stretched. What are morale and
employee turnover like after Osborne’s dismissal of Wheatley and
McDermott?
Commercial property crisis brews
Commercial property has been one of the biggest business casualties of
the Brexit vote, so it’s good timing that Land Securities and British
Land report on trading this week. Since 4 July, seven funds invested
in office blocks, retail parks and the like have barred withdrawals or
cut their value as retail investors head for the door. The Bank of
England has warned commercial property prices, especially in London,
are too high.
It’s easy to see how things could go wrong. Foreign investment, which
has fuelled the boom, is ebbing, and values are falling on concerns
about the economy. As Mike Prew, an analyst at Jefferies, points out,
commercial property is mainly funded by bank lending and owners of
property have taken on more debt. Smaller banks are more exposed than
big lenders and 75% of small- and medium-sized companies use property
as collateral.
The share prices of commercial real estate companies have fallen
heavily since the referendum result. Land Securities and British Land
are the two biggest and their trading updates will coincide with their
annual general meetings this week. Shareholders should inquire about
this brew of risks.
Lack of direction at easyJet?
What is going on post-Brexit at easyJet, which publishes a trading
update on Thursday? On the Friday of the referendum result, the budget
airline issued a vague but reassuring statement saying that it would
continue to achieve long-term earnings growth and returns for
shareholders. But the following Monday it published a more detailed
update listing problems in the European aviation industry such as
cancellations and saying Brexit had made things worse. Analysts were
bemused by the timing of the two statements but didn’t get the chance
to question Carolyn McCall, easyJet’s chief executive.
There are also questions about how Brexit will affect easyJet’s
ability to fly throughout Europe and where it will base its
operations. The message from the company is that it may need one or
two extra air operator certificates, in addition to its UK and Swiss
ones now, but that would mean placing a handful of employees in a
particular country. It all depends on the deal the new government
manages to get from the EU. Whatever the outcome, easyJet’s head
office and its 1,000 employees would stay at Luton airport, a
spokesman said. Still, there’s nothing like hearing things from the
boss, so there will be plenty to talk about when McCall faces analysts
for the first time since the Brexit vote.

RBS pays $500m to Charter directors Nils Pratley
The 20 most senior directors and executives of Charter One Financial
will share a cash payout of about $500m (£280m) - large even by
American standards - after agreeing its sale to Royal Bank of
Scotland.
The $10.5bn, all-cash takeover sent shares in RBS down 5.6% to £16.25
as the group attempted to raise £2.75bn through a stock market placing
to fund the deal.
The bank's brokers were confident last night that the cash would be
raised at a price between £16.10 and £16.20 a share. It is the second
largest placing yet in London.

I have reviewed that reference number and can see the Complaints Team
wrote to you in 2013 to explain it did not believe the matters you
raised to be a complaint against the regulators in relation to the

I haven't seen anything to show the response taken by the Complaints

explain in more detail. Instead of challenging my integrity wih your
latest email?
I you don't wish to speak to me the FCA should at least talk to Sarah
Chapman (ISS10441377) and ask of her complaint to the FSA and what she
knows about my complaints against the SEC, RBS, Citizins Bank and
Fidelity etc over fraudlulent real estate sales since 2004 when I
first ran for a seat in Parliament after suing many Yankees including
3 US Treasury Agents.
It is obvious to me that Sarah Chapman must have understood the
document hereto attached and some of the older emails below because
until I was notifiied by your people of HER complaint and its number
I had never heard of her.
For the record I am infinitely gratefull for Emma Wotton's integrity
as well. Her willingness to listen to me on the phone until she came
to an understanding of my sincerity was impressive. In my humble
opinion she should be the boss of the FCA. .It is because of the email
I got the next from Samantha Stewart of the FCA the very next day that
its painfully obvious to me that you people do not even talk to each
other let alone me. I have no doubt whatsoever if Ms Wotton had not
responded to me in an ethical fashion and I had not forwarded her
email to the FSB etc I would have been ignored by the FCA for the
benefit of Mark Carney and his bankster buddies just as it has been
done for the past 16 years and counting.
I hope you know that I have a lawsuit in the Federal Court of Canada
against the CROWN (File # T-1557-15) in which some of this stuff has
already been discussed. Trust that there are other lawsuits to follow
and the RCMP, the SEC, the FCA and the FSB will be far more than
merely mentioned. Your outfit has had 10 years to come to an
understanding of my issues and you Brits keep playing dumb or
deferring me to someone else for no reason I will ever understand.
As far as Federal Court of Canada goes the FCA is entitled to know
what Mark Carney many Banster and the Prime Ministers of the UK,
Australia, New Zealnad, Sweden, Canada and Iceland have known for
quite some time before Brexit unseated the mindless David Cameron to
