A piece of prized World War II U.S. naval history, the wreckage of the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, which was sunk by the Japanese in a crucial sea battle, has been discovered by an expedition funded by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

The expedition team announced that the wreckage of the Lexington, crippled by the enemy and then scuttled on May 8, 1942, in the Battle of the Coral Sea, was found Sunday on the seabed in waters 3,000 metres (about 2 miles) deep, more than 800 kilometres (500 miles) off Australia's east coast.

In addition to helping stop Japan's maritime advance, the sea battle is famous for being the first in which the opposing ships did not come in sight of each other, carrying out their attacks with carrier-launched aircraft.

"I prefer ships that weren't sunk"

@Jason DeBack "How can we spin this to be about Trump?"

-Liberals

Same way Trump spins everything to be about how he's being picked on by the nasty MSM or the disgraceful FBI and flat out lies about anything that suits him. Normal people who don't inhabit his anal zone are just sick of him.

Hon Malcolm Turnbull, Hon Bill English and David Raymond Amos

Rob Kov

@Rob Kov Sorry did I make a generalization about liberals and then make an assumption about what they want / might say?

Bill Moyer
Bill Moyer
@Rob Kov
Yes, you did, and it was rather pointless, considering that you don't have to be a liberal to despise Trump, the most unqualified and undignified individual ever to hold the office of US president. In fact many US republicans despise Trump as well, but being morally challenged, they aren't doing much about that, as they benefit personally from their party being in power.

Rob Kov
Rob Kov
@Bill Moyer I never said you have to be a liberal to hate Trump, I was just basing my opinion on the current running Democrat platform which is - The root of all evil is Trump. I disagree with almost every point you make, which is your opinion and you are entitled to it, but without actually supporting the "moral" issues you have with his policies, doesn't make you any better to make judgement than anyone else. Just because you think something is morally better doesn't mean it is morally better for everyone.

@Joseph Mediano Has the Orange Yankee Cat or his lawyer Mr Cohen got your tongue?

People who can’t comprehend why a ship sunk in battle is a war grave have a short circuit somewhere.

David Amos
David Amos
@Gerald Trudeau It was scuttled not sunk in battle

Benjamin Dover
Benjamin Dover
@David Amos
Seriously?? It was hit by two torpedoes and two bombs, had two massive explosions, was burning out-of-control, and was filling with water. It was sunk to make sure that the Japanese wouldn't attempt to recover it. I'm pretty sure it would've been okay if it wasn't attacked during a major naval battle.

David Amos
David Amos
@Benjamin Dover Your word N'esy Pas?

"It was sunk to make sure that the Japanese wouldn't attempt to recover it"

Joseph Mediano
Joseph Mediano
@David Amos Did you spend a few early minutes without oxygen?

Recovered even as a hulk.

David Amos
David Amos
@Joseph Mediano Actually i spent 30 days (corrected) in a coma in my early years but like my Father before me who was a proud son of the Keith Clan I was too pig headed to die.

FYI My Father's plane went down in the Pacific in WW II and he was the soul survivor out 9 men in the plane that day or I would not be here arguing your insults.

BTW I am named after my Father's friend David Hornell Look him up sometime. David was killed on my Mother's Birthday in 1944 two weeks or so after her favourite brother Raymond was killed in Normandy. I am named after him as well

Joseph Mediano
Joseph Mediano
@David Amos Then you ought to know that ships are scuttled all the time when damaged or cornered as a result of battle, not because the captain is having a bad day. Graf Spee comes to mind and I didn't have to look that up either. Btw, my parents were married on June 6 1944 (yes) before returning to active duty in the Pacific (yes, my mother as well)

David Amos
David Amos
@Joseph Mediano I figured that you were a Yankee Do tell have your ever heard of an NSA Agent named Gene Stanley from Hampton South Carolina? A clue for you is he flew B 29s over Tokyo

Joseph Mediano
Joseph Mediano
@David Amos See there you go again making poor historical assumptions. What's that big continent in the south Pacific that also participated in WWII?

David Amos
David Amos
@Jeff Taylor "Recovered even as a hulk."

How could the Japanese recover it if they did not have control of the area?

David Amos
David Amos
@Joseph Mediano They are members of the Five Eyes N'esy Pas?

I find it odd how a sunken ship is considered a burial site? If someone dies in the bushes and is found should it be considered a burial site? I say once the human remains are cleared, in a dignified way, do what you wish with the ship.

Benjamin Dover
Benjamin Dover
@johnsharpers
If someone dies in the bushes then the the body is taken away and buried somewhere else. That ship is the resting place of many U.S. sailors - it has human remains inside. Digging around inside that ship and taking artefacts is tantamount to graveyard robbery, which I'm sure you're not in favour of.

David Amos
David Amos
@Benjamin Dover "Digging around inside that ship and taking artefacts is tantamount to graveyard robbery,"

Tell that to a lot dead Pharaohs

Jeff Taylor

@David Amos

I'm not surprised you don't understand the difference

Are you trying to say that the pharaohs' graves weren't robbed?

David Amos

@Aaron Morris No Mr Taylor is

 Sean Flynn Justin Thyme
The American aircraft carrier was SUNK.

How can that be a VICTORY for the Americans?

Joseph Mediano
Joseph Mediano
@Justin Thyme Cause maybe the score was 4-1 or maybe the other team just got a nasty surprise. The answers to these questions are often contained in things called books.

David Amos
David Amos
@Justin Thyme History is always written by the winner

David Amos
David Amos
@Peter Sirman Survey Says?

"Although a tactical victory for the Japanese in terms of ships sunk, the battle would prove to be a strategic victory for the Allies for several reasons. The battle marked the first time since the start of the war that a major Japanese advance had been checked by the Allies."

Joseph Mediano
Joseph Mediano
@David Amos And sometimes it's even accurate. Feel free to point out the errors in the victors rendition of events. We'll wait.

David Amos
David Amos
@Joseph Mediano Midway was the battle the Yankees won everybody knows that

Joseph Mediano
Joseph Mediano
@David Amos I certainly know that. But they also lost carriers at Midway. You can keep your other browser page open I'll do this from memory...the US had major losses in the Ardennes in 1944 but still won the Battle of the Bulge. And they had losses at the Battle of Leyte Gulf but won that as well. Also significant losses at Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal and Peleliu but won in all those campaigns never mind North Africa, Sicily and Italy. There aren't many shutouts in real warfare though today's whiny Liberals expect zero casualties.

David Amos
David Amos
@Joseph Mediano As you no doubt know I ran against the whiny liberals and the nasty conservatives five times thus far I quite likely know as much about history as you think you do. BTW I was accepted into Royal Military College in 1970 without having to finish my finals in High School. Ask me why I didn't go I Double Dog Dare Ya

Joseph Mediano
Joseph Mediano
@David Amos I don't care if you spent 5 years in Khe Sanh until the US abandoned that particular ship as well, when you say "history is written by the winners" you disrespect all those things you're talking about in your family because the history that they wrote was a damn fine and doesn't deserve to be questioned with banalities.

David Amos
David Amos
@Joseph Mediano You are too funny It seems that you have no idea who you are insulting even though I gave you several clues N'esy Pas?

Mike Martin
Mike Martin
@David Amos
Do you really want people to "know who (you are)?"

David Amos
