Fundy Royal campaign targets middle class with focus on jobs
Fundy Royal voters have elected Conservatives all but 1 time in 28 elections over 101 years
The Conservatives have strong roots in the southern New Brunswick riding — this area has given its support to the Conservatives in every election for the past century, save for 1993, when Liberal Paul Zed won office.
In 2011, Conservative incumbent Rob Moore captured nearly 60 per cent of the vote.
Moore said he hopes the party's record, with its focus on the economy and direct benefits to people, will earn him another term in office.

The Tory incumbent pointed to programs, such as the Universal Childcare Benefit, as well as family income splitting and pension income splitting, that has left more money in the pockets of Canadians.
But, he said, he has also delivered on bringing federal cash to his ridinng.
Moore says the biggest question he's heard at the door is how the next government will move the regions's economy forward.
He says the answer lies in TransCanada Corp.'s proposed Energy East pipeline.
"The [Irving Oil] refinery is employing many people in our region, there's a lot of spinoff benefits, and if we can bring that resource from Alberta to New Brunswick to be refined and sold from our port, that is a great economic opportunity," said Moore.

"That's the majority of Fundy Royal," said Lockhart, who has owned Lockhart's Weddings and Special Occasions Inc. since 2004.
"People working everyday to make ends meet and the fact that we have a national campaign focused on strengthening the middle class to put more money in their pockets to then stimulate the economy, I'm encouraged by that," she said.
Lockhart says her party's focus on seniors through initiatives like affordable housing, strengthening the Canada Pension Plan and guaranteed income supplement would benefit the region.
"They worked hard their whole lives and we need to make sure they have secure retirements," she said.
Hopeful for change
NDP candidate Jennifer McKenzie says she's sensing an eagerness for change in the large riding.
McKenzie, an electrical engineer living in St. Martins, threw her name in after becoming "discouraged and disillusioned by the current government."
People want our youth back, we want to have reasons to stay here.

The region has lost a lot of its youth because of the Harper government's lack of focus on the economy, she said.
" be part of the economy and have jobs," she asid.
"The current government's focus on the prairie provinces in the oil and gas industry left New Brunswick and the Atlantic provinces neglected, and we actually had a three year recession here."
McKenzie says the NDP's focus on small business would better serve the area's economy.
"Our agricultural industry should be flourishing, we have to make sure we protect the family farm, there's fishing, forestry, I'm proud of our tourism initiatives, so much is a good fit to the NDP," she said.

"The pipeline is a bad idea for people locally and we heard about the pipeline spills in northern Alberta and Michigan, and that ... oil they hope to bring in through the pipeline is impossible to cleanup," Coburn said.
"It's a bad idea nationally because it's all going to be exported … And it's going to contribute so much to the greenhouse gases we're trying to avoid to the globe, and exacerbate global warming terribly."
Coburn says she has heard encouragement for her party at the door, a big turnaround from when she first stepped into the political arena in 2010.
"Now I feel I'm finally not talking into the wind as I have been a long time about environmental issues," said Coburn.
"People are aware of the environmental problems we experience, and we're going to experience if we don't make some changes. That's a positive change from when I first ran."
Fundy Royal contains parts of the counties of Albert, Kings, Queens, Saint John and Westmorland and includes St. Martins, Salisbury, Sussex and Petitcodiac, as well as part of Quispamsis.

One day after Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau dropped in on Fredericton, Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole made a last-minute stop in Saint John in a final scramble for votes ahead of Monday's federal election.
O'Toole appeared with five of his New Brunswick candidates, including Saint John-Rothesay's Mel Norton, in the iceless ice shed of a local curling club.
He sent a clear signal to supporters of the People's Party of Canada that they should be supporting him instead.
"There is only one leader that can replace Justin Trudeau," he said.
"Channel that frustration to replace Mr. Trudeau. We hear you. We know you're frustrated, which is why we have a plan to get our country back on its feet."
O'Toole avoided several questions from reporters on decisions by Premier Blaine Higgs and his Alberta counterpart Jason Kenney to reimpose public-health restrictions in the face of rising COVID-19 case numbers.
O'Toole would not say what he thinks of Higgs's announcement Wednesday that proof of vaccination will be required to enter non-essential businesses and facilities starting next week.
"I will always work with the provinces on their decisions related to proof of vaccination, QR codes, vaccine passports," he said.
People's Party supporters oppose such requirements and O'Toole dodged a question over whether he is happy people with such opinions are not part of his Conservative Party.
Moore held the riding from 2004 until 2015 when he was defeated by Lockhart as part of the red wave that swept over Atlantic Canada that election.
Moore told Global News that he welcomed the chance to once again represent the people of the riding.
“I’m honoured to have been given a mandate of representing the people of Fundy Royal,” he said. “It’s not something I take lightly and I’m looking forward to it.”
Moore said he felt that the policies of Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government did not sit well with the residents of the rural New Brunswick riding.
“Issues like the carbon tax have not gone over well here,” he said. “Affordability is a big issue and our platform and our record addressed that concern.”
With the exception of Lockhart’s win, the riding has long been considered a reliable Conservative district for the past 100 years.
Only Liberal Paul Zed’s win in 1993 interrupted the Tories’ dominance in the riding.
New Brunswick premier Blaine Higgs was on-hand to congratulate Moore’s win and said he was overjoyed to see Fundy Royal return to a Conservative riding.
“If you go back in history, you see this riding was pretty traditional as a PC riding, so I think it’s coming back to its roots and Rob was certainly a representative that’s worthy of support, and only got stalled last time around because of that wave coming through,” said Higgs."

Pickering council suspends Lisa Robinson’s pay over integrity commissioner’s report
Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson is being docked another 60 days of pay following a report by the city’s integrity commissioner.
Councillors discussed the report on Monday, during a raucous council meeting that the chamber was eventually cleared.
Members of the public took to the podium to take issue with another motion being debated that day. That motion would express the city’s support for some potential policies around municipal codes of conduct.
Robinson has previously had her pay suspended by 30 days, due to a separate incident.
The Integrity Commissioner’s Report
In the report dated October 13, the firm ‘Principles Integrity’ argued Robinson had contravened council’s code of conduct.
The issues stem back to a May 15 incident outside the Durham District School Board (DDSB) in Whitby, when Robinson appeared in front of a crowd of protesters and announced her plans to introduce three motions:
- To only fly government flags in public spaces, as well as flags supporting veterans. This would effectively ban the pride flag and transgender pride flag from government buildings. Robinson noted this policy follows a similar one enacted in Norwich, Ontario.
- To bar children from attending pride parades and drag storytime events.
- To allow non-members to access male-only and female-only changerooms at the Chestnut Hill Recreation Complex. Robinson’s motion does not explicitly call for the removal of the universal changeroom, which includes 23 individual changing cubicles.
Robinson was ultimately unable to find a seconder for these motions.
Inside the DDSB building, the May meeting proved particularly raucous. The room was eventually cleared.
“It cannot be a coincidence that she just happened to have the [notices of motion] at hand when she took the bullhorn microphone in hand to address the crowd on the board office steps,” reads the October report. “As well, she was observed within the building handing out her business card. Whether it was her real estate business card, her paralegal business card or her City Councillor card, handing out business cards at a school board meeting suggests she was exploiting the meeting as an opportunity to garner support.”
“For the above reasons, we find that the councillor has promoted attitudes which are homophobic and transphobic, failed to recognize the diversity of the community, failed to protect the dignity of individuals, and attempted to bring forward motions which would not, in our view, withstand scrutiny under Ontario’s Human Rights Code,” argued the report.
The AMO’s proposed policies
Members of the public took to the podium to decry another motion, which they described as undemocratic.
That motion does not make any changes to the city’s laws, but expresses Pickering’s support for other measures being proposed by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO).
The AMO, which represents the province’s municipal and regional governments, is seeking to have Queen’s Park strengthen certain municipal codes of conduct. This would include the following policies:
- Making updates to these codes to account for workplace safety and harassment.
- Providing more training for integrity commissioners.
- Allowing municipalities to ask a judge to remove a sitting council member, if it is recommended by an integrity commissioner’s report.
“For clarity, if the arms-length independent integrity commissioner had the jurisdiction to offer that sanction [removal], council could go to the courts and make that determination,” explained Ashe.
Some speakers on Monday argued the measures, if they are ever implemented by Queen’s Park, could make it easier for councillors to remove Robinson from office. As of Wednesday, no Pickering councillor has publicly called for Robinson’s ouster.
“Being a citizen, this is about removing an elected official off council with no regard for the people’s voice,” said one speaker.
“The City of Pickering is anything but a democratic institution with respectful discourse,” said another.
“I see you as parental-phobic, and have no interest in protecting my children from public displays of sexuality during parades and age-inappropriate pornographic material and drag shows,” said another speaker.
“From what I understand, you’re asking that municipalities across the province be allowed to remove a councillor based on the recommendations of an integrity office, regardless of [whether] that councillor was voted in by the public,” said a woman who identified herself as Robinson’s mother.
“What you are wanting and working towards, in my opinion, is a dictatorship,” she added.
The meeting was punctuated by multiple raucous moments. One person in the gallery who had been speaking loudly was removed about halfway through.
“If anyone else doesn’t want to respect the rules of this chamber, please leave now,” said Ashe. “The police are here if you need some assistance.”

Councillors first discussed the integrity commissioner’s report.
“It is disheartening to witness the very individuals who should be standing up for justice and fairness, sanctioning a single parent burdened with responsibilities, mortgage payments and the well-being of her child,” argued Robinson. “Is this the kind of leadership we deserve? I think not.”
“It’s not a matter of whether I agree, or any of us agree with Councillor Robinson and her personal opinions or whether we disagree,” argued Councillor David Pickles.
“I think as the integrity commissioner pointed out, it has more to do with the conduct and the actions,” he said. “And they found the conduct and actions to be inappropriate and that the councillor has not complied with the ethical framework that applies to her.”
“It’s about human rights. And there is no compromise when we talk about people’s human rights under the laws of Ontario,” said Councillor Maurice Brenner.
“You may not realize it, Councillor Robinson, but this creates an environment of material harm against those who are vulnerable and marginalized,” argued Councillor Linda Cook.
“This is very polarizing for the entire community, whatever you believe,” she added. “This is impugning the ability for us to continue with other orders of business as we spend time and energy, rather than focusing on building relationships and moving forward. I hope this is certainly the last integrity commissioner’s report we have to deal with at council.”
During his remarks, Ashe noted that a recent op-ed by Robinson had been “denouncing” the universal changerooms at Chestnut Hill. Robinson interjected, taking issue with that term.
“I did not denounce the universal changeroom; I said it should be inclusive of all,” she said.
As the argument unfolded, Robinson accused Ashe of lying.
At one point, Robinson’s mother returned the podium to interject. “I have the floor, and I’m giving my remarks,” Ashe said to her. “If you want to come up here in three years, you get your 25 signatures, you get your 100 dollars, and you put your name on the ballot.”
Ashe wound up clearing the gallery.
“My apologies for people that have been acting appropriately,” he said when the meeting resumed.
“I’ve got to tell you, I’ve been in this chamber for 16 years, Councillor Pickles for 26 years [and] Councillor Brenner over the course of four decades, off and on,” he continued. “We have never experienced what we have just experienced. So shame on everybody.”
“Councillor, I encourage you to reflect on the implications of the report and consider how we can collectively move forward,” he said to Robinson.
Council voted in favour of the pay suspension.
The second vote
They later discussed the AMO’s policies.
“It is vital to have a mechanism for all employees to be free from harassment and to have a mechanism to report incidents of workplace violence,” said Councillor Mara Nagy.
“Why would these questionable politicians put horrendous rules on ourselves?” she said, in respect to the question of whether Robinson could be removed from office. “This is not something that would apply to one person, one councillor, one municipality. We are asking for this to protect all staff, all levels of corporations across all municipalities.”
“Today raises concerns about the actions of our city council, who are advocating for the provincial government to grant them the authority to expel elected officials and prevent them from running in future elections, based on their Code of Conduct,” said Robinson, during her remarks.
“This, my friends, is a grave injustice and a betrayal to the democratic ideals that we hold dear,” she added.
Council voted to support the policies.
The next day, Ashe took to YouTube to decry the behaviour of people in the gallery.
“I think it diminishes democracy when the audience was intimidating people – councillors, staff, residents,” he said. “It made it an unsafe place for the dialogue that should be cordial, respectful and meaningful.”
In a statement to Durham Radio News, Robinson expressed her “utmost disgust” at Monday’s events.
“The actions and intentions behind all of my motions have always been rooted in promoting neutrality, safety, and inclusivity,” she wrote. “The biased and vindictive behaviors displayed by certain council members, as well as the dismissive actions of the integrity commissioner, are not only disheartening but also detrimental to our democratic society. It is my fervent hope that these concerns are thoroughly addressed, and that we can foster an environment where fair dialogue and respect for differing viewpoints prevail.”
Robinson said the report appeared to be “nothing more than a product of double hearsay.”
“I have previously lodged complaints regarding senior staff members discouraging me from providing statements of disclosure,” she claimed. “Shockingly, these concerns were dismissed, along with my complaints regarding undisclosed gifts and benefits received by other council members, as well as unreported golf games. The lack of investigation, absence of witness interviews, and overall bias exhibited by the integrity commissioner represent a grievous breach of ethical and professional conduct.”
“Furthermore, I have also brought forward serious complaints of sexual harassment, workplace harassment, psychological harassment, and violence,” she continued. “Astonishingly, these complaints were summarily dismissed by the integrity commissioner without any meaningful investigation or engagement with witnesses, despite my provision of ample evidence.”
