"Cheaters and rule breakers who do this discourage the involvement of
both our long standing and new party members. It makes a mockery of
their commitments and corrupts the process," Raitt said in a statement
Monday. "I am deeply concerned about a leadership election process
that has now been called into question."
Late last week, O'Leary called for a review of the party's membership
list after he said "backroom organizers" were using prepaid credit
cards to sign up "fake members." After a speedy investigation, the
party struck 1,351 memberships from its voting list after the party
found they had been purchased inappropriately.
Now Bernier's team is branding O'Leary a hypocrite, claiming they have
proof that one of O'Leary's Sikh-Canadian organizers was offering to
pay the membership fees of six would-be party members in Brampton,
Ont.
CBC News has asked the Bernier campaign to produce the affidavit it
shared with the Globe and Mail, but was rebuffed."
"Ari Lasken, O'Leary's spokesperson, said everything is above board.
"Mr. Chatha has not submitted any lists or memberships in bulk to the
O'Leary campaign, and has only signed up his family," he said,
referring to the name of the of the Conservative Brampton-East riding
association president who is alleged to have offered to pay for
memberships.
"The O'Leary campaign will continue to operate with transparency and
by the rules," Lasken said. "Mr. O'Leary continues to call on the
party for a full audit of the entire list when it is finalized at the
end of the month."
Cory Hann, a spokesperson for the Conservatives, said the party
regularly reviews memberships and will ensure all rules have been
followed."

Ottawa, ON – Cory Hann, Director of Communications for the
Conservative Party of Canada, issued the following statement:
“We recently cited a report that claimed that Environment Minister
Catherine McKenna had spent over $10,000 on vanity photos in Paris
last year.
“The government department first reported that the amount was $6,662.
It then mistakenly said that figure was in Euros, which would have
made the total $10,681, which is the number we used. However they have
since clarified that the real, true, actual amount was $6,792.91 in
Canadian dollars.
“They have also confirmed that Catherine McKenna has spent over
$17,000 on vanity photos since taking office less than 10 months ago.
“The error is regrettable. Our records will be updated to show that
Liberal Minister has charged taxpayers $17,000 for vanity photos.
“We apologize for any confusion.”

with an international law firm.
Dentons announced Monday that Harper has teamed up with the firm to

OTTAWA — The anti-abortion group Campaign Life Coalition is calling on
Conservative supporters to help leadership candidates Pierre Lemieux
and Brad Trost win the party crown — and says it will do the same for
Andrew Scheer if he jumps into the race.
The CLC expects Trost, Lemieux and Scheer — who is expected to enter
the leadership contest soon — to champion social conservative issues
on the campaign trail, including speaking out against abortion and
supporting traditional family values.
The group emailed an “urgent appeal to Conservative supporters” on
Friday, calling on them to purchase party memberships, help raise the
$100,000 each candidate needs for entry fees and deposits, and collect
the required signatures for Trost and Lemieux — whom they call
“pro-life and pro-family” — to ensure they can enter the leadership
contest.
“It would be a historic victory to have either of these pro-life
individuals win the leadership vote. That is a very real possibility
considering that at least 40 per cent of the CPC’s base consists of
social conservatives,” said the email appeal.
The CLC — a lobbying group opposed to abortion, same-sex marriage and
assisted suicide — says it will do the same for Scheer, who looks
increasingly likely to announce his candidacy in the next week or two.
“If Andrew should come along, we would do the same thing for him. The
three of them are considered completely supportable, from our point of
view,” said CLC vice-president Jeff Gunnarson in an interview Friday.
“We’re not asking them to run on a platform that’s going to change the
world into our view. We just want to elect somebody that has the
sensibility and I guess the willingness to discuss our issues openly
and fairly.”
A growing number of Conservative MPs are quietly supporting Scheer, an

"You hear Canadians say, 'I don't care all that much, I don't have
anything to hide,'" Arbour said of the law that will result in more
personal information being shared between government departments under
the Security of Canada Information Sharing Act.
"Privacy is not there to protect bad people who have done bad things,"
said Arbour, whose daughter Emilie Taman is the NDP candidate for
Ottawa-Vanier.
"It's there to protect the scope for people to have their own
spiritual, personal, intellectual, political life without that being
exposed to the public if they don't want to."
Arbour expects constitutional challenges to the legislation, and said
she found the position of the Liberal Party — which voted for the bill
but vowed to repeal or amend parts of it — to be "enormously
disappointing."
"I think it was very hard to mobilize against something where people
didn't feel immediately threatened," she said. "And of course the
politics of fear, as usual, worked. The Liberals expressed some
misgivings but weren't prepared to go the distance and oppose it."
'Picking fights with the courts'The former Supreme Court justice also
discussed what she termed an "acrimonious" relationship between the
Supreme Court and the federal government.
The Conservatives have spent more than $4.7 million fighting 15 losing
court cases with the country's highest court, including more than $1
million on tough-on-crime measures.
"What I would like to see would be for the government to waive its
solicitor-client privilege with its own lawyers and release the
opinions that it received on the constitutionality of some of [their]
legislation," she said.
"I'd be very interested to know what kind of advice the government was
getting about the constitutionality of these laws," she added.
"I'm concerned the government is picking fights with the courts that,
if it had a better understanding of the role of the court and the
scope of constitutional protection in this country, it shouldn't be."
