'Nobody was safe from it': Edmonton blogger charged with rare hate crime targeted individuals across Canada
Police say Barry Winters, 62, made derogatory remarks about race, gender, politics
Blogs that
led to a rare charge of promoting hatred were more extreme than
anything he's ever seen before, says an Edmonton police investigator.
"I've never seen such extreme hatred from an individual," said Edmonton police Sgt. Gary Willits. "He just kept spewing and nobody was safe from it.
"He literally in some of these blogs was saying to kill people."
After an investigation of more than a year, Edmonton police confirmed Wednesday a CBC News report a day earlier that revealed Barry Winters, 62, was charged with wilful promotion of hatred on a blog called The Baconfat Papers and other blogs between 2014 and 2016. But police say there's reason to believe the posts date back at least two years earlier.
The remarks don't exclusively target one particular group, but focus on various factors, including race, gender, sexual orientation and culture. Others attack individual politicians in various levels of government.
Willits said it's possible some people still don't know they were targeted in the blog posts.
Glenn Canning, based in Toronto, said there were dozens of posts on Winters' blog between 2014 and 2016 about his daughter, Rehtaeh Parsons. She committed suicide after she was sexually abused by a group of teenage boys at a party in Halifax in 2013.
Canning said he discovered his daughter and his family were the subject of the blog posts after someone contacted him and told him about them.
"It just broke my bloody heart in half to read that. It was cruel and it is even crueller to know that the guy did it for no other reason than he enjoyed hurting somebody."
Canning said he was in touch with police over the past year after they opened the investigation. He's glad police have finally laid a charge.
"I've cried over this," Canning said. "When it happens to you over a very personal thing, it affects you pretty badly."

Panas, an Edmonton-based LGBTQ advocate, said she was appalled when she
stumbled across posts on a blog suggesting she move to a country where
transgender women, like herself, are persecuted.
Panas said she has experienced online hateful comments before, but said it stood out that the blogger in this instance was from the same city.
She said she'd never met the the blogger, to her knowledge, but wondered what would happen if she did.
Willits said police began the investigation in early 2016, after they received complaints about the blog posts. Collecting the evidence was time-consuming and complicated, he said, because patterns of hatred, threats and harm had to be documented meticulously.
Willits said stating an opinion, a personal dislike, of something or someone, is not the same as "intruding on others" and "uttering threats."
The charge Winters faces is rare. Alberta Justice said in an email that province-wide, that type of charge has only been laid on three other occasions since 2011.
Edmonton police had to seek approval from the attorney general to charge the blogger, who police say had a growing following numbering into the thousands.

"I don't think there's any resolution," Wells said. "This person hasn't been held accountable; only in the sense of karma, perhaps, if you believe in that — the universe taking care of things on its own terms."
Even though there will be no court hearing or decision, Wells is hopeful the nature of the charge will act as a deterrent to others using racist, homophobic or sexist language.
"When you cross that line from free speech to hate speech, there will be consequences. That's probably the most important message out of these charges."

Interview With Mack Lamoureux

Preface In the spirit of fairness and honesty, I must state, before
all this, that Mr. Lamoureux was polite, professional, personable, and
fun to talk to, despite my misgivings then, and now.
Today I was accosted by e mail, asking for an interview by Mack
Lamoureux, a freelance writer / journalist here in Edmonton. A request
I reluctantly agreed to. The young man was pleasant but devious, or he
attempted to be. He request was sort of twisted, “just for my notes
you are declining my request for an interview?” I thought well, I
write whatever I want, and so will Mr. Lamoureux.
It became quickly apparent Mr. Lamoureux was only interested in my
background and the Rehetaeh Parsons posts. I told Mr. Lamoureux that
there must be a very special place in hell for “people,” or “killer
parents” like Glenford Canning , and Leah Parsons . Mr. Lamoureux was
wondered if “I felt any remorse for the pain I caused the Parsons /
Canning family,” by my “vicious” comments. He had seemed taken aback
by my emphatic negative answer. I tried to explain to our “intrepid
reporter” that there were millions of not hundreds of millions of
blogs in the cyber-space “universe”. Glenford Canning and his ex-wife
would have had to search numerous cyber-space galaxies to find my
humble blog, and proceed to be outraged, “pained” and vexed by my
comments. In fact someone told them about the blog.
After the so-called and never charged “rape” of the decedent Rehtaeh
Parsons, parents of the boys involved and their supporters placed
handbills throughout Halifax on poles urging people not to rush to
judgement. And to wait for the police investigation. Glenford Canning
and Leah Parsons were outraged, and egregiously offended that someone,
anyone would exercise their rights to expression, with a contrary
opinion to their own. A vitriolic, venomous Leah Parsons screamed,
cried, and lied to the media, that she felt “bullied, insulted and
abused,” that someone would be audacious enough to express an opinion
contrary to her, and her sycophants “party line.” Their right to
expression was the only one that counted. There are big big bucks in
the “victim industry!”
Mack Lamoureux’s interest now in the posts concerning the antics of
Leah Parsons and Glenford Canning seem to be a reprise of that
censorship, all in the name of a dead and less than virtuous “teen
angel.” In the intervening years Glenford Canning has impersonated
Patrick Doran, myself and scores of others in the cyber-space
“universe,” opened fraudulent Face Book accounts in my name, and
threatened me with “guys from CFB Edmonton looking for me. That I had
pissed off the wrong people.” Glenford Canning also harassed my wife
at her place of employment, but alas Mack Lamoureux was solely
interested in my blog’s less than salubrious effect on the poor
family, after so many years.
A year or a little less Patrick Doran and myself had a on-line
interview about Mr. Canning and Rehtaeh Parsons. Mr. Canning is a
self-described “journalist” and he wrote us how he was doing an “epic
rewrite of our comments,” and he did. He deliberately fabricated, and
re posted a conversation betwixt Patrick and myself to suit his
perverse imagination. I wonder, and am concerned if our Mr. Lamoureux
is the same sort of “journalist,” as our “friend” Glenford Canning.
Mr. Lamoureux was polite, attentive and pleasant in every way. We
shall find out if he’s “journalist” or shill. As an “Alberta boy” I
suspect he is the former rather than the latter, at least I hope so!
(God I hope I got the expression correct)
In the end, I care not a whit. Mr. Lamoureux will write whatever
pleases him, and his employers or contractors will post whatever they
chose, and a few may actually read it. I will write again, and again,
because I have every right to do so and it pleases me.
If anyone should dislike this humble blog. I would suggest that there
are literally hundreds of millions of blogs to read in the cyber-space
“universe,” find another blog to read!
An addendum from my friend, who feels the need to comment.

Mr. Lamoureux; instead of going after softball targets, like my
friend Barry Winters, you should perhaps look into the mirror to see
who the real villain in all of this is. The insatiable media that
lionized parasites like Glen Canning, who wilfully and gleefully,
exploits his own daughter’s tragic suicide to make a name for
himself as some sort of crusading feminist/ amateur pornographer.
Seriously, fuck Glen Canning. That stupid ass motherfucker never gave
a shit about that poor little girl, who needed some real guidance.
Not this aloof, deadbeat dad who was far more interested in
photographing chubby Native jail bait, instead of paying attention to

and do what Christie Blatchford did… actually talk to the

faggotry. Why don’t you ask Glen Canning if he feels remorse for

Shawn Cullen, Crazy David Amos, Child Abuser Glenford Canning, And

What kind of girl- child at fourteen years-old goes to drug and
alcohol fueled sex parties, regularly? The answer to that is, is an
abused child! What kind of fourteen year-old girl-child takes the
penises of two boys out of their pants and sucks and fucks their

Glenford Canning and Leah Parsons are now well on the road to being
run out of Halifax on a rail or being “tarred and feathered.”
Eddie Achtem is by all accounts a “horrible article.” An entirely
uneducated, brain damaged, “little man” whose ex wive’s justifiably
want their offspring to have absolutely nothing to do with their
“Father.” For Eddie Achtem a frontal lobotomy would be a vast
improvement on his currant mental, and intellectual status quo. He
used to e mail me with the same frequency of David Amos for awhile
there but mercifully he has forgotten me. Thank goodness little Eddie
has the attention span of a gnat.
David Amos and Eddie Achtem have the same unfettered passion for
recreational litigation, or talking about it. Whereas David Amos has
never actually sued anyone in his life. It appears little Eddie Achtem
has indeed spent a losing legal career representing himself in Family
Court. Little Eddie Achtem indeed reminds me of the old saw. “The man
that represents himself in court, has a fool for a client. David Amos
has threatened litigation, upon The Crown, Lt. Col Errington, Prime
Minister Stephen Harper. Mark Carney, myself, and a very large host of
others. “C’yall in court” is David Amos retarded clarion cry! But
alas, convicted pedophile David Amos is just another two bit maritime
kanadian without a pot to piss in, with his or her hand out for
government largess.
That brings us to Shawn Cullen, or as David Amos refers to him as
“Shawny Boy Cullen.” But then again, David Amos is completely dyslexic
and calls everyone, “Patty Boy, Barry Boy, Stevie Boy, or “Baby,”
because David Amos is intellectually and emotionally deficient. Shawn
Cullen appears to have taken up the vocation of e mailing me the last
day or so. That begs the question: Who the fuck is Shawn Cullen. David
Amos claims Mr. Cullen is my “butt buddy,” but alas I’ve never heard
of him. Unless Mr. Cullen is a lifelong Saskatchewan Rough Rider fan,
a member of the Conservative Party of Canada, and or is a Sir Arthur
Conan Doyle enthusiast… I’m not sure I really require to know who he

David I never said I was fat. There you go assuming again. Do I need
to define for you what your cussing nature means. I never said I am
tough David. I said I fear none David and that is from reasons far
greater than physicality reasons. You need to prove you are worth
getting to know yet all you do is attempt to win. You must assume you
can lose David. It is a very diverse world we live in. You also speak
