Justin Trudeau's Brother Is Driving a RFK Jr. Campaign Bus
The antivax bus is coming. Everybody's jumping.
“Anyone have a clue why,” Toronto Star columnist Susan Delacourt tweeted Sunday. “A @RobertKennedyJr bus, blaring ‘Stop Children What's That Sound’1, is circling Ottawa's New Edinburgh neighbourhood?”
It was a great question. Because, sure enough, a bus emblazoned with Robert F. Kennedy Jr’s face, proclaiming “the remedy is Kennedy,” was driving around the Canadian capital blaring, arguably, the anthem of the 1960s counter-culture.2
The fact that the bus (ok, actually, it’s an RV) was in Canada isn’t even in the interesting part: It’s who was driving it.
Behind the wheel with his wife and two children by his side, was and is Kyle Kemper: An anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist and activist in his own right, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s half-brother.
This week, on a very special Bug-eyed and Shameless, I've got something to tell ya. I've got news for you: RFK Jr. is comin’ through.
When Margaret Trudeau’s marriage to her late husband, Pierre Elliott (Prime Minister of Canada 1968-1979, 1980-1984), was in the process of falling apart, she went off on the romp of a lifetime.
Much has been written and said about Margaret, and I couldn’t begin to do her life story justice here. But suffice it to say that she was rubbing elbows with — and often attached romantically to — Mick Jagger, Ronnie Woods, Lou Rawls, Jack Nicholson3, amongst others. (Her ex-husband the prime minister, was not much different, having dallied with Barbara Streisand before their marriage.) The romance that properly marked an endpoint to her marriage was, strangely enough, with Ted Kennedy: RFK Jr’s uncle. By the early 1980s, she was separated from Pierre Elliot and without custody of her kids and, without alimony, broke.
Then she met Fried Kemper, an Ottawa real estate developer, and settled down. The two would spend the next 15 years married and would have two children, Alicia and Kyle.
When Justin Trudeau — Pierre Elliot’s son, Kyle Kemper’s half-brother — became prime minister in 2015, the Trudeau family baggage was relegated to, mostly, curiosity. Best I can tell, nobody thought to ask Kemper’s opinion about the state of politics in Canada and Kemper didn’t seem terribly keen to offer it. Canada is, beyond a superficial curiosity, not terribly interested in the lives of politicians’ families. And that’s for the better.
In relative anonymity, Kemper became an early Bitcoin evangelist. Which was well enough because, as we know, being a Bitcoin evangelist is a full-time job.
He became a lobbyist, calling on the government to keep their hands off Bitcoin altogether. (Related: Kemper once told a magazine that the worst day of his life was “February 28, 2014, when Mt. Gox, a major platform, filed for bankruptcy.” Maybe a bit of regulation would have prevented that!)
It really wasn’t until 2020, and the COVID-19 pandemic, that Kemper stepped into the limelight. In a rambling video, Kemper endorsed the increasingly paranoid politics that was infecting the right — and converting some on the paranoid left. “The real battle is not simply left or right. It is authoritarianism versus libertarianism,” Kemper explained. Kemper phrased his new turn to politics as an “affectionate” chiding of his brother.
Over the past few years, he’s popped up at the world premiere of the Plandemic “documentary.” (It was fiction.) He became a huge booster of the so-called Freedom Convoy, and joined Alex Jones on Infowars to explain how the occupation of Ottawa should push his half-brother to resign and trigger the “great awakening.” He endorsed the idea that the 2020 U.S. election was stolen.
And now, Kemper has joined the Robert F. Kennedy Jr bandwagon.
“One of the major concerns for many nations, including Canada, is the erosion of sovereignty under the influence of a globalist oligarchy,” Kemper wrote on Twitter. “But fear not, for Bobby Kennedy is here to champion our cause!”
Kemper is, unsurprisingly, big into the ‘wellness’ community: A hotbed of conspiracy theories and misinformation these days. RFK Jr., Kemper writes, is an “icon for health and wellness.”
The Florida-based Kempers weren’t happy with just endorsing Kennedy. They decided they had to roll up their sleeves and actively help out.

Which brings us to the bus RV.
RFK Jr. joined the Kempers in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts to send off the Kennedy-mobile as it headed through Montreal, Ottawa — then, New York to San Francisco, intercity disinfo.
The unveiling of the project came, technically, via Gavin McInnes — ex-VICE, ex-Proud Boy leader, current dirtbag4 — on his poorly-watched streaming platform. McInnes showed up in a parking lot where the RFKbus was parked, and stumbled upon Kemper sporting a MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN tshirt.
“So you did this all by yourself just for a laugh?” McInnes asks.
“Uhhh,” Kemper starts. “It's been a kind of evolving bus moving kind of art car. And originally it was as blockchain across America bus. My friend ran from Miami to Santa Monica, to raise awareness for blockchain and the homeless epidemic in America.” (Woof.)
As a purely DIY project, the Kennedywagon would be a strange and eccentric use of Kemper’s time, but he would be well within his rights to drive a camper up-and-down the U.S. spreading the gospel of a man who thinks poppers cause AIDS. (Dispatch #59)
But on the side of the RV is a URL: Healthedivide.com. That corresponds to the website of the first major pro-RFK Jr. superPAC.
Heal the Divide, Inc is registered with the Federal Election Commission through a pro-Trump political consultancy firm. The actual leadership of the PAC isn’t listen on their website or FEC filings. (Their first campaign statements are not yet due.) But Heal the Divide was incorporated in Indiana as a non-profit in April by James Heckman. (He is not, for you nerds out there, the Nobel Prize-winning economist.)
Heckman made his money in the sports publishing world: Starting his own sports news website, being acquired by Fox, joining Yahoo, and eventually founding publishing company Maven. His company would strike a licensing deal to operate famed publication Sports Illustrated, and a few other titles. And by all accounts, it went badly: “Heckman and [business partner Ross] Levinsohn are like morticians who drop a corpse while carrying it to the coffin and then trash the deceased in the funeral program,” the Ringer wrote in 2020. Later that year, Heckman was turfed and replaced with Levinsohn.
Since then, Heckman has gone down the anti-vax route: Sharing a declaration from a bunch of quack doctors proclaiming COVID-19 vaccines “experimental genetic therapy injections.” He tweeted last year that there are “over 20 million extra dead” due to Pfizer’s vaccines: “A crime against humanity.”
And now, it seems, he’s running a pro-RFK Jr. superPAC.
I messaged Kemper to ask about his involvement in the campaign. “I believe Kennedy is the Remedy,” he replied. Later, after multiple invites to join him on his podcast, Kemper said he had no formal role on the campaign.
I asked if he had any role wth the Heal the Divide. But, after several more podcast invitations, he did not reply.
Heal the Divide is big on accepting Bitcoin donations, which lines up with Kemper’s love of crypto. Kemper was also the second person to tweet out the link to Heal the Divide’s website, shortly after Heckman himself.
Kemper, for what it’s worth, is running his own quasi-campaign. He’s selling merch over at kennedy.party. His website reads that it “is an independent production not affiliated with the official campaign or it's committee. Every sale helps to grow the movement; ensuring that the campaign's message of unity and hope reaches as many people as possible.” (Which sounds to me like a political action committee, and therefore governed by campaign finance law, but what do I know.)
Whether Kemper’s Kennedy barnstorming is in service of Heckman’s superPAC or his own half-baked effort, it is both a strange tale and a sign of things to come.
Because, here’s the thing about Kemper: His core rhetorical message, of a constructive post-partisanship, in contrast to division and anger, is actually a really welcome one. And I do believe that it is genuine. It was a common refrain during the anti-vaccine occupation of Ottawa: We’re here fighting for your freedom was a common rallying cry. Most people, of course, see that emotionally manipulative language for what it is: A fanatical belief that their cause is right and just, and everyone who fails to follow is indoctrinated, a sheeple. Folks like Kemper profess, often earnestly, to believe in compromise and understanding, but are so enmeshed in their disinformation networks that any discussion is really just a debate that will eventually collapse.
This is a frustrating paradox: The people most emphatic about political reconciliation are also the ones making the problem worse. Still, we should hold out some hope that we can get back on the same page, especially as the brainworm-inducing memories of the pandemic fade.
Yes, anti-vaxxers have done actual, measurable harm: RFK Jr. in particular, thanks to his proselytizing and snake oil selling, particularly in communities without adequate healthcare. And it’s not hard to see that his campaign is a stalking horse for the Republicans, as they try to thwart Joe Biden. And RFK Jr. may not wade into the same kind of hateful anti-trans rhetoric as Ron DeSantis, say, but he does frequently suggest that Big Pharma is to blame for the existence of trans people. But it’s hard to ignore the fact that RFK Jr.’s — admittedly vague — platform does read like a thoughtful effort to start talking about issues instead of running politics-as-bloodsport. (Minus the anti-vaccine stuff, of course.)
It’s not enough to point at Kemper and RFK Jr. and say: They’re wrong, don’t listen to them. Because they have tapped into a very real current of grievance, particularly on the left. It is a space also occupied by other professional agitators and longtime polemicists like Glenn Greenwald, Matt Taibbi, Bill Maher, and a handful of others. Their underlying complaints, such as the excessive power of big corporations or the the United States’ penchant for starting expeditionary wars, have become rather unassailable. Indeed, I myself agree with them on a huge swath of things. Their skepticism and contrarianism, however, has gone off the rails. It has linked up with hard-right anti-institutionalism. Some call this horseshoe theory. I call it paranoia manifest.
As people grow disenchanted with the political establishment, RFK Jr. may yet become a welcome home. And Justin Trudeau’s half-brother may welcome them in.

SOUNDCLIP
MALE SPEAKER: I have a short announcement to read.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Hi, I'm Tamara Khandaker.
SOUNDCLIP
MALE SPEAKER: Senator Robert Francis Kennedy died at 1:44 a.m. today.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: When we learned Bobby Kennedy was shot and killed in 1968, his son, RFK Jr., was just 14 years old. This was five years after the assassination of his uncle, president John F. Kennedy. At the time, RFK Jr. was only nine.
SOUNDCLIP
MALE SPEAKER: There is no way of calculating the millions of words that have been uttered in the course of this day in all countries of the world as human beings fumble for words to express their offended senses at what has happened in the United States.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: 55 years after his father's death, RFK Jr is now following in both of their footsteps and running to be the Democratic nominee for president. But there is a stark difference between what we heard from the elder Kennedys.
SOUNDCLIP
JOHN F. KENNEDY: And when Americans are sent to Vietnam or West Berlin, we do not ask for whites only.
BOBBY KENNEDY: There are speeches made about the fact that we treat everybody equally, and yet we don't treat everybody equally.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: And what we're hearing from RFK Jr.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: In fact, COVID 19, there's an argument that it is ethnically targeted. COVID 19 attacks certain races disproportionately.
[Music: Theme]
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Last week, the New York Post published a video of RFK Jr. where he makes racist comments suggesting COVID could have been bioengineered to spare Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. He's also been spreading false information about vaccines and autism for decades and is deep into conspiracies about 5G and totalitarian control.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: What we're seeing today is what I call turnkey totalitarianism. They are putting in place all of these technological mechanisms for control, to control every aspect of behaviour, of conduct, of thought, and to obliterate dissent.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Despite this, RFK has gained celebrity followers and unusual support across party lines in a polarized America. Initially, he got one in five votes in polling for the Democratic primaries. Vera Bergengruen is a senior correspondent at Time who recently did a long interview with RFK Jr. She's on the show today and we're going to talk about why he's campaigning on conspiracies.
[Music: Theme]
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Hi, Vera.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: Hello.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: So I want to start with who RFK Jr. was before he was known for peddling conspiracy theories. After the death of his father and his uncle, he struggled for a while. He became an addict. He got kicked out of schools, eventually got busted for heroin possession, but he ended up becoming really successful in environmental law, right?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: That's right. I think that's something that a lot of people don't know about him because he's best known for being a Kennedy and then for everything that's happened in the last decade or so. But he was a very respected environmental lawyer. You know, he started working for the National Resources Defence Council. He was very focussed on cleaning up water around New York.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: I went to work for commercial fishermen on the Hudson River in 1983 when I first got sober. We forced polluters to spend almost $5 billion on Remediation of Hudson. And today, you know, partially as a result of our work, the Hudson is now the richest waterway in the North Atlantic.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: And, you know, he was kind of hailed as the hero of the Hudson by local newspapers. This was in the 70s, the 80s. And he started really kind of going after what he called, you know, anyone he saw as a polluter. So as you know, coal companies, pesticide companies, oil companies. And he was very proud of kind of standing up for the little guy against evil big corporations that sought to poison them. He was on the magazine covers. You know, it seemed to a lot of people that he was kind of fulfilling his destiny as the son of RFK by taking on this particular mission.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: You show me any polluter and I'll show you a subsidy. When those coal companies are, you know, are cutting down the mountains, which degrades the value of our country, that's a cost on the public. And making it so that children can't breathe, that's a cost…
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Okay. So he was this respected environmental lawyer, but in the 2000s, he turned his attention to vaccines. And this was long before the Anti-vax movement became what it is today. How did RFK start speaking out against vaccines?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: So in his telling in his crusade against anyone he saw as a polluter, he started receiving visits from parents who said their children have been injured by mercury in vaccines. And they said that no one was doing anything about it, that health agencies were lying about the safety of vaccines. And again, in his telling, he dismissed it for a while and then finally sat down with this big stack of research and went through it and increasingly became convinced that health agencies were lying about the safety of vaccines in the same way that he had found that they were lying about pollution in water and all these other things he had previously done. And he always likes to portray himself as someone who studies the science and really delves deep and knows all of these details. And he fell further and further into that. And I do think it's interesting to note there was some personal sacrifice involved in this because everything invitations started drying up. People started seeing him as a conspiracy theorist because there was a lot of people back then and now kind of questioning little parts of vaccine science. But he was just falling deeper and deeper into, you know, a link between autism and vaccines, which there's no medical evidence for it. And he just kept kind of using his platform as a Kennedy and as someone who like as we said, was on magazine covers, was a very prominent person, to push widely discredited conspiracies about vaccines. And by 2010 or so, he really was kind of an outcast. TV shows, political campaigns, you know, he basically just wasn't asked back because they couldn't platform someone who was spreading this dangerous misinformation.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: I've never been anti-vaccine. I'm called anti-vaccine because that's a way of kind of marginalizing and discrediting a view in the public. What I've said is I'm pro-science and pro safety.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: And he says he himself was hurt by vaccines, right?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: Yeah. You know, anyone who's heard him recently, you know, he speaks in this very strained voice and it's from this vocal cord disorder he has. And he told me and he's said recently that he studied some of the side effects of the flu shot and he thinks that's why he got it. Like he actually has gotten a lot of credibility among the community that he represents by saying that he himself has suffered a vaccine injury.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Yeah. So you mentioned that he says he was censored and ostracized for almost two decades because of his beliefs around this. But that changed when COVID hit in 2020 As the U.S. lockdown and vaccines arrived. Where did RFK find popularity again?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: That's right, because as you noted, he was really early to that particular kind of movement. I mean, the anti-vaccine movement has existed for decades, but this was before it really kind of started taking off. And so suddenly, he kind of seemed pressured. Like it looked like he was a sage, like he had known all along that vaccines were dangerous and that you should question them. And so when more and more people started being nervous about taking the COVID vaccine, about the rapid development of it, suddenly, he was kind of the most prominent person. And again, the Kennedy name always ends up helping a lot in this case because, you know, one does wonder how far he would get if he wasn't a Kennedy. But, you know, he seemed like a very respected person who supported all of these views.
SOUNDCLIP
[news clip]
FEMALE SPEAKER: He's part of America's most famous political dynasty, commanding an audience in a way his uncle, JFK, once might have.
[chants and protests]
FEMALE SPEAKER: This is an anti-vaccine mandate rally, but many in this crowd hold extreme and scientifically unproven views about the COVID 19 vaccine. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is encouraging them.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: And, you know, I spent a lot of time reporting on the anti-vaccine movement over the course of the pandemic. And I was in all of these groups online, on Telegram, on Facebook, and among them, the name, you know, RFK Jr., it's like a God. You know, it's a hero. It's someone who they really, really believe in and it's the name they pull out to end all arguments. You know, if RFK Jr. says something, then that is basically the gospel.
[music]
SOUNDCLIP
FEMALE SPEAKER: The Centre for Disease Control say you're 14 times less likely to die from COVID if you have the vaccine, are you putting people's lives…
RFK JR: I mean, if scientific studies have shown that, no. We are saving people's lives and we're saving democracy because children should not be getting this vaccines.
[music]
TAMARA KHANDAKER: So with his new following, RFK Jr. is now running for the Democratic candidacy just like his father and his uncle did. And you've described his ideology as sort of like Trump's “Make America Great Again”, but for Democrats. Can you unpack that for me? What do you mean by that?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: Yeah. It struck me as I was listening to him talk when he announced his candidacy that, you know, he keeps describing this ideal world. And again, knowing what happened to him in his childhood, you know, his uncle was assassinated when he was nine. His father was assassinated when he was 14. And he seems to have this very rosy particular memory of the 60s, of public service and of a time when people respected America globally. And, you know, he speaks in these terms of rivers didn't used to be polluted and companies used to be, you know, you used to be able to trust the government. It did strike me that it was somewhat similar to Trump, you know, “Make America Great Again”. And I asked him about that. I asked. It strikes me that it actually sounds quite similar. You want to return to something? And he said, yeah, I want to return to the America of my youth. You know, the America that I grew up in.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: I wanted my children to grow up with the same pride in our country and the same love we had, you know, communities that are filled with dignity and in a rich and exemplary nation.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: And he keeps repeating this particular sentence that I find very striking, which is…
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: I felt like my country was being taken away from me.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: Which is pretty much the same thing that Trump says.
SOUNDCLIP
DONALD TRUMP: And we're losing our country and we're losing the spirit of our country. But I will tell you, make America great again and MAGA…
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Mm hmm. Beyond vaccines, what are some of the other conspiracy theories that he's talking about in his campaign? Because it's gone way beyond just that, right?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: Right. And it's been interesting to see more people discover those because obviously, he's very well known for his anti-vaccine activism. But, you know, he believes that 5G wifi is harvesting all of our data and trying to control us.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: Today, the mechanisms are being put in place that will make it so none of us can run and none of us can hide. They're putting in 5G to harvest our data and control our behaviour, digital currency that will allow them to punish us from a distance and cut off our food supply.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: He has several conspiracy theories about the role of the CIA in his father and uncle's assassination, which again are fairly widespread, but he always seems to take them a step further. There's a lot of people who are giving him a good amount of leeway with the anti-vaccine activism, thinking he was just kind of a vaccine safety crusader. But some of this other stuff, I mean, he really believes a really wide swath of conspiracies and they're all kind of rooted in this very dark view of the world. And so I think that's kind of the thing that's connecting all of them.
[music]
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: The minute they hand you that vaccine passport, every right that you have is transformed into a privilege contingent upon your obedience to arbitrary government dictates. It will make you a slave.
[music]
TAMARA KHANDAKER: What sense did you get from him about why he's running for president?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: So my sense was that he is very relieved to have a platform again. He says, I asked him and he says that's not it, right? But when you talk to him, you can tell. I mean, this is someone who, again, was quote unquote, censored and who loves to talk. He can talk about a variety of topics with a lot of confidence. And he couldn't do that for 15 years. And now he's on, you know, even though most mainstream sources are treating him carefully because obviously, you can't, you know, they don't want to give the platform to a lot of these conspiracies, he has not said no to almost a single podcast, a single TV show. He goes on stage, he goes to Bitcoin conferences. The sense I got is someone who is just relieved to have all these people to speak to again. And, you know, he basically said as much himself when I asked him, he said, you know, running for president makes it much more difficult for people to censor me. And he has repeated this to many other people as well. So I think he partly is running because he sees it as some kind of continuation of his family legacy, but really partly because, you know, he likes to talk and he likes to have people listen.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Yeah. I love the tidbit in your piece about how he loves podcasts and he thinks that podcasts are going to be the way that he wins this election. That was pretty funny. So obviously, part of the shock of seeing RFK promoting conspiracy theories is that he is American political royalty, the lineage of JFK and Bobby Kennedy. What role is that playing in his presidential campaign?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: His entire presidential campaign is basically built on the legacy of his father and his uncle.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: I’ve come here today to announce my candidacy for the Democratic nomination for president of the United States.
[crowd cheering]
VERA BERGENGRUEN: You know, his announcement speech, I think I counted between the two of them, he mentioned them more than two dozen times, the Kennedy for president signs at his rallies had these vintage blue block letters that look very similar for any of us who’ve watched footage from the 60s. And, you know, he looks a lot like his father. He kind of wears these skinny ties that were popular in the 60s. He has a rolled up sleeves and he just seems to really willingly and knowingly lean into that. And he gave a speech about, you know, he said it was a peace speech that was in the tradition of JFK’s 1963 speech.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: We have internalized and institutionalized a reflex of violence as a response for any and all crises. Everything becomes a war.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: So he does a lot of these things very knowingly to kind of remind Democrats or people in general of this other era of the Kennedy Democrats, even though, again, the things he kind of embraces do seem very different.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Mm hmm. And can you tell me about what you saw when you went to interview him at his home and what you learned about the way that he feels about the Kennedy legacy?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: Yeah. I mean, he lives in the hills outside of L.A. And when you enter his house, you know, it's a shrine to his family to the point where it's a little strange because you will have a burst of his uncle, for example, a metal bronze bust in the corner just kind of watching you. There is a blown up photo of himself with JFK in the Oval Office. There's, you know, his father's voter registration card is framed in the corner. There is a really big cover of Life magazine with his father on it from when he summited a mountain. We all have family heirlooms in our homes, but this is very clearly something he surrounds himself with, something he wants people who visit him to surround themselves with. And you can tell, you know, that he’s grown up in the shadow of that legacy his whole life. And again, that kind of adds to his current sense of destiny. He does… I think it's sincere. He sincerely feels like he is carrying on this legacy.
[music]
TAMARA KHANDAKER: So I'm curious about who RFK’s campaign has been resonating with. Why have we seen some pretty big celebrities come out in support of him? People like football player Aaron Rodgers, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, actor Alicia Silverstone from Clueless.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: That's the question everyone seems to be asking because in terms of his actual positions, to an extent, that's not what's drawing most people. I think it's partly, you know, there's some disenchantment with the options. With Joe Biden, you know, there isn't like this fervent, you know, a lot of people feel very ambivalent about him. And even if they wouldn't usually support someone like RFK Jr., they do seem to kind of want to use his candidacy as a platform to discuss these issues. And he seems to be attracting a lot of what I kind of call contrarian tech pros, a lot of people who just kind of love, you know, they're just asking questions, quote unquote, about the war in Ukraine, about vaccines, about censorship, about all these things that he loves to talk about, often very tinged with conspiracy. And having someone like RFK Jr. run gives them an excuse. We saw him go on Joe Rogan’s podcast. We saw him, you know, he goes on all kinds of right wing podcast as well. And a lot of people kind of enjoy that. You know, they enjoy having someone run that means that they can kind of raise all these provocative questions and have these discussions. That being said, it's unclear how many of them actually really support him politically. He does seem to be drawing a certain contingent of both kind of more right wing and also left wing people who share some of his views, you know, in terms of vaccines, things like that. You know, there's a lot of kind of West Coast, more hippie types, Hollywood types, even, who kind of seem to support him for that. I've spoken to a couple of people in Silicon Valley who said that they don't really consider themselves political. They didn't vote in the last election or two, but they kind of like what he has to say. And a lot of people kind of think that he transcends politics. Even though he's running as a Democrat and he says he's carrying on the legacy of the Kennedy Democrats, he's not, most of his positions aren't particularly falling into the Democratic Party. And so a lot of people kind of think that he's, you know, a centrist and they can get behind that.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Yeah. And I wanted to ask you about how this is all changing. But just really quickly, this is kind of an obscure Canadian thing. I don't know if you've heard of this, but there was an RFK branded RV that was spotted driving around our capital, Ottawa, this month. And the person behind the wheel was this guy Kyle Kemper. He's an ANTI-VAXXER and also the stepbrother of our prime minister. And it was apparently blasting the song Stop Children, What's That Sound. Yeah.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: I did not hear about that, but I do know that he was very supportive of the Canadian truckers and the protests last year.
SOUNDCLIP
RFK JR: It was clearly a peaceful demonstration and this was the principal theme. It was an organizing feature of the convoy from the beginning that it was about peace and love and justice and democracy.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: So maybe he was more known because of that as well.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: So yeah, RFK was initially polling at 20% among Democrats, but since then, he's been spending a lot of time talking about conspiracy theories. And that video of him saying COVID could be an ethnically targeted bioweapon came out last week. How has that affected his popularity?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: That statistic was very striking, the 20%. It's important to, again, remember how far name recognition takes you. So I think people were very alarmed or interested in the fact that he was polling at 20%. But his favourability among Democrats has just kind of nosedived in the last couple of weeks. And while his favourability among Republicans has continued to increase because he goes on all of these right wing shows, he seems to attract much more of that particular audience. Again, it's not really clear how many people will truly support him if he actually runs. There's some concerns that he might run as an independent and kind of play spoiler for Joe Biden, but it's really hard to tell. I mean, he's doing what he I think intended to do, which is take up a huge amount of oxygen. And despite media outlets and politicians and many of the American political groups trying really hard not to give him the attention that he's craving, it's very difficult not to when, you know, Elon Musk is having him on Twitter Spaces and when Joe Rogan has him on his podcast which has 11 million listeners. He's kind of correctly calculated that if he just kind of goes on every single alternative medium, you know, the media and the establishment will have to pay attention to him. And so it still remains to be seen what that ends up doing in terms of politics, but, you know, he definitely is getting the attention that he was looking for.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: So just to wrap up here, given that the WHO says the global COVID emergency is over, although not the pandemic itself, vaccine mandates and travel restrictions are basically all gone. With so much of that controversy in the rear-view, why do you think there are people who are still driven to RFK because of these conspiracies?
VERA BERGENGRUEN: I think the pandemic was such a once in a generation jarring event. There's a lot of people, even though technically, many of our lives have gone back to normal and a lot of these issues that animated the people who supported RFK Jr. aren't really happening anymore, like the mandates and all of that, there's a significant part of the American electorate that wants to relitigate COVID. They want to talk about the shutdowns and about the economic pain. And, you know, and again, it was just a massively tragic and just extremely disconcerting and displacing event. And there's a lot of people who have different levels of dealing with it. But the legacy of that is a lot of conspiracies about censorship, about, it’s increased the number of people who are willing to kind of have those discussions. And, you know, it's having a pretty concerning effect all over the place. There's been the embrace of anti-government rhetoric which has gotten just much bigger than it used to be before the pandemic. All the millions of Americans who are now distrusting regular vaccines, regular childhood vaccines that have nothing to do with the COVID vaccine, which before they didn't have any questions about. So it just kind of opened up this bigger appetite for conspiracies and again, like I said, to kind of rehash what happened in the last three years, and RFK Jr's candidacy kind of gives them a platform to do that. And I think even though much of the world has moved on and many of these things aren't as relevant anymore, he's counting on the fact that enough people do want to do that.
TAMARA KHANDAKER: Vera, this was really interesting. Thank you so much. It was a pleasure to talk to you.
VERA BERGENGRUEN: Thank you so much.

RFK Jr. knows we can all do better.
Kennedy24 Logo
Dear David,
Running for President requires determination and grit.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. has it in spades.
And he doesn't want to keep it to himself, he wants all Americans to
thrive and live healthier, happier, and longer.
In fact, he has spent a lifetime doing just that.
RFK Jr.'s activism around toxic pollution led him to lobby
successfully for the removal of mercury from most childhood
vaccinations in the United States.
He went on to advocate for the restoration of standard product
liability and placebo testing requirements for vaccine manufacturers.
The pharmaceutical mega-corporations are by far the most heavily fined
and criminally prosecuted companies in America, yet also some of the
most powerful.
His nonprofit, Children’s Health Defense, has long been a key crusader
against the corruption of this industry and its influence in
government.
As President, RFK Jr. will fight for a healthier, less drug-dependent America.
RFK Jr. knows we can all do better.
But it’s going to take a President who has a history of standing up
for those who have no one doing so.
It's going to take a President who has the strength, determination,
and resolve to challenge the corrupt and failed Health Institutions —
the WHO, HHS, NIH, CDC, and the FDA.
Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
They must be held accountable for their actions, and their inactions,
and subject to fundamental reform.
RFK Jr. has spent a lifetime seeking justice and health freedom for
all Americans, and he will continue to do so as your President.
Please let Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. hear from you with a gift of $24 a
month for 2024; or $11, $35, $50, $120 or more today.
America needs a President who has shown the resilience to fight for a
healthier, stronger America — and one who will keep the health
agencies in Washington and around the globe accountable.

Michael Cohen says he unwittingly sent AI-generated fake legal cases

Michael Cohen arrives at New York Supreme Court for former President
Donald Trump's civil business fraud trial on Oct. 25, 2023 in New
York. Cohen says he unwittingly passed along to his attorney bogus
artificial intelligence-generated legal case citations he got online
before they were submitted to a New York judge. Yuki Iwamura/AP
NEW YORK — Michael Cohen, Donald Trump's onetime personal lawyer and
fixer, says he unwittingly passed along to his attorney bogus
artificial intelligence-generated legal case citations he got online
before they were submitted to a judge.
Cohen made the admission in a court filing unsealed Friday in
Manhattan federal court after a judge earlier this month asked a
lawyer to explain how court rulings that do not exist were cited in a
motion submitted on Cohen's behalf. Judge Jesse Furman had also asked
what role, if any, Cohen played in drafting the motion.
The AI-generated cases were cited as part of written arguments
attorney David M. Schwartz made to try to bring an early end to
Cohen's court supervision after he served more than a year behind
bars. Cohen had pleaded guilty in 2018 to tax evasion, campaign
finance charges and lying to Congress, saying Trump directed him to
arrange the payment of hush money to a porn actor and to a former
Playboy model to fend off damage to his 2016 presidential bid.
Cohen, who was disbarred five years ago, said in a declaration
submitted to the judge on Thursday that he found the citations by
doing research through Google Bard and was unaware that the service
could generate nonexistent cases. He said he uses the internet for
research because he no longer has access to formal legal-research
sources.
"As a non-lawyer, I have not kept up with emerging trends (and related
risks) in legal technology and did not realize that Google Bard was a
generative text service that, like Chat-GPT, could show citations and
descriptions that looked real but actually were not," Cohen said.
"Instead, I understood it to be a super-charged search engine and had
repeatedly used it in other contexts to (successfully) find accurate
information online."
Google rolled out Bard earlier this year as an answer to ChatGPT,
which Microsoft has been integrating into its Bing search engine. The
tools can quickly generate text based off prompts from a user, but
have a tendency to make things up, also known as "hallucinations."
Cohen blames his lawyer for failing to check legal citations
Cohen blamed Schwartz, his lawyer and longtime friend, for failing to
check the validity of his citations before submitting them to the
judge, though he asked that the judge dispense mercy toward Schwartz,
calling his failure to check the citations an "honest mistake" and "a
product of inadvertence, not any intent to deceive."
In a declaration filed with the court, Schwartz said he thought drafts
of the papers to be submitted to the judge to dissolve Cohen's
probation early were reviewed by E. Danya Perry, a former federal
prosecutor now in private practice who also represents Cohen. He said
he never reviewed what he thought was another attorney's research.
Perry, who discovered that the cited cases were bogus after seeing the
court filing, said Schwartz's claim that he came to "believe" that the
citations came from Perry were "incorrect and I believe, far-fetched,
as I had no involvement in any back-and-forth — not directly with Mr.
Schwartz or his paralegal and not even indirectly through Mr. Cohen."
When she learned of them, Perry reported the false case citations to
the judge and federal prosecutors.
In her submission to the judge, Perry wrote, "Mr. Cohen engaged in no
misconduct and should not suffer any collateral damage from Mr.
Schwartz's misstep."
Judge notes fake AI-generated citations have surfaced before
In discussing possible sanctions earlier this month, the judge noted
that it was the second time this year that a judge in Manhattan
federal court has confronted lawyers over fake citations generated by
artificial intelligence. Two lawyers in an unrelated case were fined
$5,000 for citing bogus cases that were invented by ChatGPT, the
AI-powered chatbot.
In entering the 2018 guilty plea, Cohen did not name the two women who
received hush money or even Trump, recounting instead that he worked
with an "unnamed candidate" to influence the 2016 election. But the
amounts and the dates lined up with $130,000 paid to porn actor Stormy
Daniels and $150,000 that went to Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal to
buy their silence in the weeks and months leading up to the
presidential election, which Trump, a Republican, won over Hillary
Clinton, a Democrat. Daniels and McDougal claimed to have had affairs
with Trump, which he denied.
Earlier this year, Trump pleaded not guilty in New York state court in
Manhattan to 34 felony charges alleging that he falsified internal
business records at his private company to coverup his involvement in
the payouts.
After his arrest, Trump said in a speech, "This fake case was brought
only to interfere with the upcoming 2024 election and it should be
dropped immediately."
He has since pleaded not guilty to charges in three other criminal cases.

Trump's former fixer Michael Cohen testifies against him in New York

Michael Cohen arrives for former President Donald Trump's civil
business fraud trial at New York Supreme Court on Tuesday. Yuki
Iwamura/AP
NEW YORK — Michael Cohen, the onetime lawyer and fixer for former
President Donald Trump, came face to face with his former boss in a
New York courtroom on Tuesday.
Cohen was at the New York County Supreme Court to testify in a civil
trial alleging the former president inflated the value of his assets
to land better business deals and tax benefits.
During his testimony, Cohen said that Trump had asked him to "increase
the total assets based upon a number that he arbitrarily elected."
His responsibility, along with that of former Trump Organization Chief
Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg, "was to reverse engineer the very
different asset classes, increase those assets in order to achieve the
numbers" Trump had asked for.
As the court broke for lunch, Trump, who is not required to be present
for the trial but arrived within several minutes of Cohen on Tuesday
morning, told reporters he is "not worried" about Cohen's testimony,
arguing Cohen is not a credible witness due to his past lying under
oath.
How Cohen and Trump landed on opposite sides
Trump and Cohen had a falling out in 2018 amid a federal investigation
into Cohen's financial dealings and special counsel Robert Mueller's
investigation into the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia during
the 2016 presidential race.
In late 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to a raft of federal charges,
including campaign finance violations related to hush money payouts to
two women in exchange for their public silence about their personal
relationships with Trump.

In February 2019, Cohen testified before the House Oversight Committee.
"Mr. Trump is a cheat," Cohen said before lawmakers. "It was my
experience that Mr. Trump inflated his total assets when it served his
purposes, such as trying to be listed amongst the wealthiest people in
Forbes, and deflated his assets to reduce his real estate taxes."
Trump has long argued that he has done no wrong and has repeatedly
cast Cohen as untrustworthy.
Cohen's record came up inside the court, too. While Colleen Faherty of
the New York attorney general's office wanted to get it out of the way
at the top of her questioning, Trump attorney Alina Habba dwelled on
it during cross examination — flagging that Cohen had lied under oath
multiple times.
Ahead of Tuesday's proceedings, Cohen told reporters "this is not
about Donald Trump vs. Michael Cohen, or Michael Cohen vs. Donald
Trump. This is about accountability, plain and simple, and we leave it
up to Judge Engoron to make all the determinations on that."
New York Judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the trial, issued an
order before the start of the trial concluding that Trump and his
associates — including his sons Eric and Donald Jr. — did inflate the
value of their assets. At stake in the trial is whether or not Trump
conspired to commit fraud on purpose and how much he will owe the
state in penalties if so.
Cohen's cross examination is expected to continue on Wednesday. More
lawyers, insurers and Trump employees will fill out the week of
testimonies as well. Still on the witness list: Trump himself and his
children, Ivanka and co-defendants Donald Jr. and Eric.
Andrea Bernstein contributed to this report.

David,Our nation stands at a critical juncture, where the very essence
of democracy and free speech hangs in the balance.Individuals like
Daniel Ellsberg, John Kiriakou, Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden, and
Julian Assange have bravely exposed government corruption, shedding
light on injustices that threaten the core principles of our
society. But instead of honoring these truth-tellers, our government
has chosen to persecute them. As a staunch advocate for freedom of
speech and transparency, I am reaching out to you today with an urgent
plea:join us in demanding the immediate release of Julian Assange.
Assange, a journalist and publisher, has languished behind bars for 13
years for his role in uncovering the truth about governmental
wrongdoings, from torture at Guantanamo Bay to anti-democratic actions
by the DNC.It's a travesty that exposing crimes has become a greater
offense than the crimes themselves. We cannot allow this injustice to
continue. <https://www.kennedy24.com/ass
the Petition <https://www.kennedy24.com/ass
my first day in office, I pledge to pardon Julian Assange and launch a
thorough investigation into the corruption and crimes he has exposed.
Additionally, I will issue an executive order to put an end to any
attempts by federal agencies to silence political speech. But I cannot
do this alone. I need your support.By signing our petition

protection for whistleblowers everywhere.Together, we can ensure that
the voices of truth are heard and that those who dare to speak out

Assange went 'way beyond' journalism, U.S. says at his last-ditch
extradition appeal
Decision on extradition weeks away as Assange misses 2-day hearing for
health reasons

high court on the day Assange appeals his extradition to the United
States. (Toby Melville/Reuters)
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange should face espionage charges in the
United States because he put innocent lives at risk and went beyond
journalism in his bid to solicit, steal and indiscriminately publish
classified U.S. government documents, lawyers for the American
government argued Wednesday.
The lawyers spoke before Britain's High Court in response to a
last-ditch bid by Assange's defence team to stop his extradition from
the United Kingdom to the U.S.
Assange's lawyers are asking the High Court to grant him a new appeal
— his last roll of the legal dice in a saga that has kept him in a
British high-security prison for the past five years.
The judges overseeing the case, Victoria Sharp and Jeremy Johnson,
reserved their decision at the end of the two-day hearing, and a
ruling on Assange's future is not expected until March at the
earliest.
If they rule against him, he can ask the European Court of Human
Rights to block his extradition — although supporters worry he could
be put on a plane to the U.S. before that happens, because the British
government has already signed an extradition order.
The 52-year-old Australian has been indicted on 17 charges of
espionage and one charge of computer misuse over his website's
publication of a trove of classified U.S. documents almost 15 years
ago. American prosecutors allege Assange encouraged and helped U.S.
Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning steal diplomatic cables and
military files that WikiLeaks published, putting lives at risk.
Assange a 'political prisoner': wife
Lawyer Clair Dobbin told the High Court that Assange damaged U.S.
security and intelligence services and "created a grave and imminent
risk" by releasing the hundreds of thousands of documents — risks that
could harm and lead to the arbitrary detention of innocent people,
many of whom lived in war zones or under repressive regimes.
Dobbin added that in encouraging Manning and others to hack into
government computers and steal from them, Assange was "going a very
considerable way beyond" a journalist gathering information.

Justice in London on Wednesday. The High Court heard the WikiLeaks
founder's final appeal against extradition to the United States, where
he faces espionage charges for publishing classified military and
diplomatic files on the WikiLeaks site. (Kin Cheung/The Associated

Assange was "not someone who has just set up an online box to which
people can provide classified information," she said. "The allegations
are that he sought to encourage theft and hacking that would benefit
WikiLeaks."
Assange's supporters maintain he is a secrecy-busting journalist who
exposed U.S. military wrongdoing in Iraq and Afghanistan. They have
long argued that the prosecution is politically motivated and he won't
get a fair trial in the U.S.
His lawyers argued on the first day of the hearing on Tuesday that
American authorities are seeking to punish him for WikiLeaks'
"exposure of criminality on the part of the U.S. government on an
unprecedented scale," including torture and killings.
What is the Espionage Act and who has been charged before?
Former CIA engineer who sent 'Vault 7' secrets to Wikileaks
sentenced to 40 years
Lawyer Edward Fitzgerald said Assange may "suffer a flagrant denial of
justice" if he is sent to the U.S.
Dobbin rejected claims that the charges are a "tool of oppression" to
punish Assange for his political opinions. She added that the First
Amendment does not confer immunity and that media outlets that went
through the process of redacting the documents before publishing them
are not being prosecuted, she said.
WATCH | Stella Assange accuses U.S. of valuing state secrets above justice:
Stella Assange accuses U.S. of valuing state secrets above justice
Duration 1:12
In a speech to U.K. supporters of her husband, Julian Assange, Stella
Assange denounced the U.S. government for prioritizing the protection
of state secrets over exposing criminal activity and details that
leave it susceptible to scrutiny. Julian Assange is fighting
extradition to the U.S. on espionage charges for publishing classified
documents on the WikiLeaks site.
Assange's lawyers say he could face up to 175 years in prison if
convicted, though American authorities have said the sentence is
likely to be much shorter.
Assange was absent from court on Wednesday and Tuesday because he is
unwell, WikiLeaks said. Stella Assange, his wife, said he had wanted
to attend, but was "not in good condition."
"Julian is a political prisoner and he has to be released," she told reporters.
Legal odyssey
Assange's family and supporters say his physical and mental health
have suffered during more than a decade of legal battles, including
seven years in self-exile in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London.
"They're putting Julian into the hands of the country and of the
people who plotted his assassination," said Stella Assange, referring
to claims by Assange's lawyers that he was a target of a CIA plot to
kidnap or kill him while he was in the Ecuadorian Embassy. A judge
previously dismissed the claims.
WATCH l Appeals court overturns Assange decision (2021):
Court rules Julian Assange can be extradited to the U.S.
Duration 2:03
A British appeals court has ruled WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange can
be extradited to the U.S., where he faces spying charges. The decision
overturns an earlier ruling that denied Assange’s extradition to the
U.S. over fears of his mental health.
Assange's legal troubles began in 2010, when he was arrested in London
at the request of Sweden, which wanted to question him about
allegations of rape and sexual assault made by two women. In 2012,
Assange jumped bail and sought refuge inside the Ecuadorian Embassy.
The relationship between Assange and his hosts eventually soured, and
he was evicted from the embassy in April 2019. British police
immediately arrested and imprisoned him for breaching bail in 2012.
Sweden dropped the sex crimes investigations in November 2019 because
so much time had elapsed.
Julian Assange appeals after U.K. orders his extradition to U.S.
A U.K. district court judge rejected the U.S. extradition request in
2021 on the grounds that Assange was likely to kill himself if held
under harsh U.S. prison conditions. Higher courts overturned that
decision after getting assurances from the U.S. about his treatment.
The British government signed an extradition order in June 2022.
Meanwhile, the Australian parliament last week passed a motion calling
for Assange to be allowed to return to his homeland. Prime Minister
Anthony Albanese was among those voting in favour.
