Federal byelection called for Aug. 18 in Alberta's Battle River–Crowfoot riding
Former Conservative MP Damien Kurek resigned so Pierre Poilievre can run for his seat
A federal byelection will be held in the Alberta riding of Battle River–Crowfoot on Aug. 18, Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced, setting the stage for Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre's potential return to the House of Commons.
The announcement on Monday came less than two weeks after Conservative MP Damien Kurek officially stepped down from his seat.
Kurek signalled his intention to resign last month so Poilievre could run in the riding — one of the safest Conservative seats in the country.
But according to House rules, Kurek needed to wait 30 days after his election was posted in the Canada Gazette before he could actually step down.
Voters in Poilievre's former Ottawa-area riding of Carleton elected Liberal MP Bruce Fanjoy in a stunning upset. Poilievre had been elected seven straight times in the riding since 2004.
According to Elections Canada, Carney could have called the byelection any time between June 29 and Dec. 15. Shortly after he won the 2025 federal election, Carney told reporters he would not delay Poilievre's chance to become an MP again and would call a byelection as soon as possible.
Leadership review in January
Without a seat in the House of Commons, Poilievre cannot act as the Opposition leader in question period or participate in debate.
The Conservative caucus chose former party leader Andrew Scheer to lead the Opposition in the House of Commons on a temporary basis.
Poilievre also faces a Conservative Party leadership review in January after the Tories failed to form government in the last federal election. If a leader does not resign, the party's constitution requires Conservative Party members to vote on whether that leader should stay on at its next national convention.

On behalf of the Honourable Michelle Rempel Garner, P.C., M.P. thank you for your email. Our office appreciates the time you took to get in touch with the MP. Due to the high volume of email correspondence our office receives, below is a guide on how your email will be responded to:
If you are a constituent of Calgary Nose Hill:
Queries regarding government programs, policies and operations take time to research, contact appropriate departments and collate information for dissemination to you. If you have provided your full contact details on your query, your email will be responded to as necessary.
If your query is case related (i.e. immigration, CPP, EI, tax issues, etc.), consent forms will need to be filled out before your file can be activated. If you have not yet filled out our office’s consent form, a staff member will be in contact with you.
If you are not a constituent of Calgary Nose Hill:
If you are not a Calgary Nose Hill resident, given the high volume of
emails we receive, your email will be reviewed and filed as INFORMATION.
If the email is Critic portfolio in nature, it will be responded to as
necessary.
If you are contacting MP Rempel Garner to review your case work, please first contact your local MP for assistance.
If your email is a form letter:
Thank you for submitting this form letter. Due to the high volume of emails M.P. Rempel Garner’s office receives, we are unable to individually reply to form letters, particularly from non constituents. Form letters are template letters generated by organizations, webforms and other sources on a given issue. However, M.P. Rempel Garner does review and consider information received from all form letters.
If you are a constituent and would like a response regarding the specific issue raised in your form letter, please email M.P. Rempel Garner’s office individually at this email address with “Constituent - (Insert subject)” in the subject of your email. This helps us to identify constituents who wish to receive a response among the hundreds of form letter responses our office receives on any given day.
Again, thank you for reaching out to our office.
Invites:
If you have invited MP Rempel Garner to your event, please note that decisions on what events to attend are completed on a bi-monthly basis. As our office receives hundreds of invitations each week, our office will only contact you if MP Rempel Garner will be attending.
Updates on MP Rempel Garner’s Work:
If you wish to know what is happening in Calgary Nose Hill and the job MP Rempel Garner is doing for you in Ottawa, please sign up for her e-newsletter on her website: https://mprempel.ca/
*M.P. Rempel Garner's office has a zero tolerance policy for threatening, abusive, or aggressive language or behaviour towards the Member and their staff. Phone calls, voicemails and emails containing threatening or abusive language will result in the termination of communications.
Thank you again.

Damien Kurek says he'll step aside for Poilievre but by law he has to wait
Northern Perspective
'It wasn't forced, wasn't asked': Former Alberta MP on giving up his seat for Pierre Poilievre
MP Damien Kurek officially resigns, paving way for Poilievre's byelection
Alberta MP needed to clear mandatory waiting period before stepping down
Alberta MP Damien Kurek officially stepped down on Tuesday, paving the way for a byelection in which Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre intends to run and regain a seat in the House of Commons.
"Today I am resigning my seat in the House of Commons so that a byelection can be called as soon as possible," Kurek said in a social media post.
"I want to thank my incredible constituents who gave me the honour of being their representative in Ottawa since 2019. It has been nothing short of a privilege to serve and be a rural Alberta voice in Parliament."
Kurek signalled his intention to resign last month so that Poilievre could run in his riding of Battle River-Crowfoot — one of the safest Conservative seats in the country.
But according to House rules, Kurek needed to wait 30 days after his election was posted in the Canada Gazette before he could actually step down.
Now that Kurek has officially resigned, the Speaker of the House of Commons has to inform the chief electoral officer of the vacancy, at which point the government would have 11 to 180 days to call a byelection.
The Governor General, on the advice of the prime minister and cabinet, will set the date for the byelection. Prime Minister Mark Carney has said he will not delay Poilievre's chance to become an MP.
Byelection campaigns last at least 36 days — so the soonest Poilievre could be elected is in early August. That could mean Poilievre will be back to leading the Opposition and facing off against the prime minister at some point during the fall sitting.
Voters in the Ottawa-area riding of Carleton, where Poilievre had been elected seven straight times since 2004, chose a Liberal in the April 28 election. Kurek won his riding with 82 per cent of the vote.
Without a seat in the House of Commons, Poilievre cannot act as the Opposition leader in question period or participate in debate.
The Conservative caucus chose former party leader Andrew Scheer to lead the Opposition in the House of Commons on a temporary basis.
Scheer told CBC's Power & Politics last month that the party expects Kurek to run again in Battle River-Crowfoot in the next general election — though it remains to be seen where Poilievre would then seek a seat.
Other MPs who stepped aside were rewarded
There's some precedent of MPs stepping aside for their party leaders.
After winning the 1983 Progressive Conservative leadership, Brian Mulroney was on the hunt for a seat. Nova Scotia MP Elmer MacKay, father of former Conservative cabinet minister Peter MacKay, resigned his Central Nova seat and Mulroney was able to lead the Opposition.
Mulroney ran in his home riding of Manicouagan in the 1984 general election, which his party won in a landslide. MacKay was re-elected in Central Nova and served in Mulroney's cabinet.
In 1990, New Brunswick MP Fernand Robichaud ceded his riding of Beauséjour so Liberal Leader Jean Chrétien could run in a byelection. Chrétien had represented the Saint-Maurice area of Quebec under former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, but resigned before making his successful leadership push.
When the 1993 general election rolled around, Chrétien ran in Saint-Maurice, which includes his hometown of Shawinigan, and Robichaud successfully re-offered in Beauséjour.
Robichaud went on to serve in Chrétien's cabinet and was later appointed to the Senate.

Outgoing Alberta MP looks to leave mark on Canada with bill to add a new national symbol
Damien Kurek proposes a national livestock brand incorporating a maple leaf
Outgoing Conservative MP Damien Kurek is looking to leave his mark in Parliament by pushing for the adoption of a national livestock brand as one of Canada's symbols.
Kurek introduced a bill in the last Parliament to create the new brand but that bill didn't pass before the election was called, meaning it now has to start over.
But Kurek may resign his seat as early as Tuesday to make way for Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run in a byelection in Battle River–Crowfoot and attempt to re-enter the House of Commons.
So Saskatchewan Conservative MP Steven Bonk reintroduced the bill to establish a national livestock brand on Kurek's behalf last week.
The proposed design is a maple leaf on top of what looks like a small arch, which Kurek described as an inverted quarter circle in "brand lingo."
"In the midst of everything that represents the best of what Canada is, conspicuously absent in the inventory of symbols was something that specifically acknowledges that Western and frontier history that was so fundamental in building, not just Western Canada, but the entirety of our nation," Kurek said in an interview.
Shortly after the election, when Poilievre failed to win his own seat of Carleton in Ottawa, Kurek agreed that as soon as the rules allowed he would step aside to allow Poilievre to run in his riding.
Carney said he'd call byelection
Under the rules, Tuesday is the first day Kurek can do that.
Prime Minister Mark Carney previously said he would call a byelection for the riding as soon as he is able.
In its new iteration, the legislation includes a reference to the new national symbol being able to "promote national unity."
That comes as separatist sentiment is on the rise in Alberta, and the province heads toward a potential referendum on the issue next year.
"At a time when I hear often that people feel like our national unity is in fact at risk, to be able to showcase in a practical way through symbolism, to say, 'look, Western Canada, it matters,"' Kurek said. "And then the key part of that is it can't simply stay at symbolism."
Kurek said that includes making sure Alberta has the ability to get its resources, like oil, to market.
Bill being reviewed
Alisson Lévesque, Culture Minister Steven Guilbeault's communications director, said in an emailed statement that the bill is being reviewed and "we will have more to say when it reaches second reading in the House."
If the bill is passed, the livestock brand would join the list of national symbols like the flag, coat of arms, beaver, hockey, the maple tree and even the national horse.
Like the coat of arms, Kurek said the livestock brand is similarly used in agricultural families as a "heraldic symbol."
Kurek said his family no longer farms cattle, but his great-grandfather registered a J K quarter circle brand that's continued to be passed down through his family.
Kurek's father, Jay Kurek, died at the age of 54 last year.
As Kurek prepares to trade his seat in Parliament for the cab of a tractor, he said that his family's brand is a symbol that connects him to his family history, a common view in farm families.
"It speaks to something bigger than oneself and that's why even though I won't be the one that has the opportunity to shepherd this, hopefully, through Parliament — it's the fact that it means something to, I hope, so many Canadians is why I'm excited that conversation can in fact keep moving forward," Kurek said.

We thank you for your call.
Preliminary results /official voting results
The preliminary results are currently available on our website.
The Canada Elections Act requires the official results from a general election to be published without delay. Between the announcement of preliminary results on election night and the publication of official voting results, the balloting results go through a number of verification stages. Results are published as they become available.
For more information regarding the validation process, we invite you to consult our website.
Under the Canada Elections Act, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) must publish a report by polling division, showing:
· The number of votes cast for each candidate;
· The number of rejected ballots;
· The number of names on the final list of electors; and
· Any other relevant information the CEO decides to include.
In the case of a general election, the report shall be published as soon as possible after the election (approximately three to five months after the election).
In the case of a by-election, the official results report is published within 90 days of the return of the writ.
As per your request of postings in the Canada Gazette by Election Canada for the 45th General Election, please refer to Canada Gazette, Part I

Good Talk -- Does The Building of The New Canada Start This Weekend?
Hmmmm
As I watch you fellas play your wicked game, it seems that you forgot the the wild card that is in the game as well. The joker or the self proclaimed court jester that is me. Or didn't anyone tell you this morning that I got out of jail last night and escaped Ashcroft's clutches once again for a little while at least? I bet you do know now because Rob Moore must be screaming for help like a little stuck pig by now.
You Bloomberg dudes ain't fooling me because I am too stupid. Plus there fact that I sent Bloomberg the same letter I sent Mulroney a long long time ago and little while before that I had talked personally to his reporter in the White House. I am certain he knew of that conversation. I will wager I am having more fun than you guys are right now. I will leave you all to wonder who gets this email next. Tommorrow we shall see if he has enough sand to make history or if he made a deal with you devils.
Some honest folks are having a pretty good laugh right now at your expense. I certainly hope the rest of Canada joins in on the chuckle. APEX in Ottawa and Accenture/McGraw Hill in New York are about to make their big plans for our future while I ran around chucking wrenches in the works. Trust me this is fun.
Tomorrow is another day and I would not want to spoil the show. If the Yankee bastards come get me tonight, methinks they will be to late to stop the circus. Rest assured I will die smiling because I know what I did today and they don't. No matter what they choose to do to me I cannot undo what I have already done. What a difference a day makes eh?
Oct. 6 (Bloomberg) -- "Canada's biggest opposition party said it would support Prime Minister Paul Martin's legislative agenda as long as he adds five pledges, including a commitment to lower taxes on poor families and to hold a parliamentary vote on whether Canada joins the U.S. missile defense program.
Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, 45, made his demands in an amendment to yesterday's Throne Speech, which laid out the government's program. The speech is considered a ``confidence'' matter, meaning the government will fall should the majority of members of Parliament vote against it. Tony Valeri, the Liberal minister in charge of organizing the legislative schedule, said he needed more time to decide whether the government could agree to the changes. Any votes on amendments to the Throne Speech will be votes of confidence, Valeri said. One may take place tomorrow, he said.
`Big Problem'
``Anything that changes the intent of the government is obviously something that we have a big problem with,'' Valeri told reporters in Ottawa. ``There's a lot to look at, a lot to consider.''
|
Jack Layton, leader of the New Democrats, indicated that he would back the Liberals. ``We will not play chicken with an opportunity to make positive change,'' Layton said in the House of Commons. " |

Hey Chantal
OTTAWA—With yesterday's Speech from the Throne, Prime Minister Paul Martin is daring the federalist opposition leaders — in particular Conservative Leader Stephen Harper — to align themselves with the sovereignist Bloc Québécois to defeat his minority government.
He may yet see that happen.
At best, the speech amounts to a high-risk attempt to tilt the balance in the House of Commons in favour of the Liberals by polarizing it along federalist/sovereignist lines.
At worst, it is the clumsy product of a governing party that is willing to break at the first opportunity rather than bend to the realities of minority rule.
What it is not is the work of a government that has broken a sweat searching for ways to make do in uncertain circumstances.
For the most striking feature of Martin's second Speech from the Throne is that it is so much like the first one.
Poring over its 15 pages, one is at a loss to find signs that its authors drafted it with a serious thought to its changed circumstances and the election-imposed necessity to reach out to the opposition to survive.
Yo, Adrienne
Yesterday while my wife and friends from Canada were busy with their last dimes bailing me out of a Boston jail that the fat dumb and happy old lawyer Ronald A. Irwin didn't care that I was in, you were busy making your big speech and bragging of preparing for another fancy world tour at Canadian expense. When I read your speech today, I saw red. I expected the political double talk kissing Martin's ass simply because he has covered your butt with respect to all the money you squandered. However stealing a little glory from the veterans of past wars was to much for me to stand. You really pissed me off and I must register my indignation now.
In your speech you paid homage to dead men from World War II that I was named after and talked of visiting Saint John NB amongst other places. Perhaps you should have stopped at the Veteran's hospital in Saint John and talked to one of the last surviving 48th Highlanders that went up through Africa and Italy. His name is ol Tom. He has been through hell and back many times and still retains a remarkable Joie de Vivre. He is one of my best friends in life and it was his kilt that I wore while campaigning for Parliament. I was also wearing it as I went off to jail as well back out again.
I am sure Tom would have loved meeting you and telling you a few horror stories about the war and about the great times that we have shared together as friends. He is thirty years my senior but he has long recognized the attibutes within me that would befit a proper lady from hell. Ask Mr. Irwin's help about a proud man they met yesterday within the living hell of a Beantown jail. Ol Tom, my father and many other good men taught me to never surrender, never take prisoners, maintain your pride and ethics and never stop enjoying whatever life may throw at you. Ol Tom, my father and all the others saw too many friends that never had a chance to enjoy the sort of life that I have lived. I thank Ol Tom for his friendship and support he is my only friend of the old school of decnt men that I have known who is still alive. It is now my turn to make their lessons and memory live on. Rest assured Tom will receive a copy of this letter.
(: I hope to see you once again real soon Corporal Hee Haw. You know I just gotta jerk your chain to hear the old dog growl. Me old Yamaha is waiting for you to ride. I will ride along with Superfarmer's old Kawi. To hell with the Harleys they are too expensive and slow for the pace. Our old bikes have been stress tested for over the 25 years why quit riding them now? Beside we are all as poor as church mice these days we might as well enjoy the day with what we already have. Say hey to Dave for me as he reads you this letter and give him a kiss for me until payday :) This note is no joke I have more respect for Ol Tom than a million politicians. If there is anyone that I wish to be remembered byway of this email, it is him. I simply don't give a damn if anyone else reads it but I know many will very very soon. You can take that to the World Trade Bank.
It was no accident that I put my name on the ballot in Fundy on June 7th. That was the day my mother's favorite brother died in Normandy. She honoured me with his name, Raymond. My father, who was the sole survivor of a plane crash during the war honoured me with the name of his friend. David who went on to be awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery. Obviously I put my full name on the ballot not only to honour both my mother and my father but to most importantly of all to honour the men like ol Tom still living who sacrificed so much in order for me to be allowed to speak up and defend the rights that so many people like him have fought to defend.
After all the prior contact with you and your office, you chose to defend the likes of Paul Martin and his many cohorts and head out to party some more? Shame on you. The following are your words and the following emails are my words and proof that I am making my best effort to properly shame you in an ethical fashion. If for no other reason someone must bear witness for the living and the dead so that their sacrifices were not in vain.
It is now the end of the first day of Parliament and it appears that my former political opponent Rob Moore, who is appropriately named as well is apparently struck dumb by my contacts with him and I have not heard from anyone that was willing to act honourably and call for a confidence vote. Methinks I will chastise the NDP first because they are the biggest disappointment to me. As you can see I have already begun. I had high hopes for them because their party contained the least amount of lawyers.
Adrienne, why you would choose to continue to honour the likes of T. Alex Hickman is way beyond Byron Prior's understanding and mine as well. Rest assured that we are cut from the same cloth as our forefathers who fought to defend our Queen. We will speak for the rights they gave us. The same ones that you and all those in public service deliberately deny us. What say you now oh ye fine and fancy lady?
Adrienne's (Martin's) words
"I congratulate both the returning members of Parliament, as well as the more than one hundred who are newly elected, as you take up your duties in the House of Commons for this Thirty-Eighth Parliament of Canada.
This year, Canadians commemorated the 60th anniversary of D-Day and the landing of allied forces in Europe—an event that spelled the beginning of the end of the Second World War. Canadian soldiers, sailors and aircrews fought with dogged bravery and were ultimately victorious on Juno Beach that day.
Shortly, I will be going to Italy to commemorate the significant campaign in which six thousand Canadians sacrificed their lives. To me, personally, these commemorations are a symbol of our eternal gratitude and an affirmation that we have not forgotten.
On these occasions, we are reminded of the huge debt we owe to those in uniform who have served this country—then and today. Our veterans connect generations and Canadians. As a country and as individuals, we gain in pride and in purpose from their deeds and their service.
I recently concluded extended visits to six
cities of varying size—Saint John, Quebec City, Toronto, Saskatoon, Calgary and
Vancouver. In them, I found remarkable, innovative projects for social renewal
and individual commitment. They express the confidence and love that we all hold
for this country. This is the spirit of Canada I see as Governor
General."
And now mine

Mark Miller VISIBLY ANGRY About Carney SNUBBING Him - Champagne GASLIGHTS Canadians On Economy
Conservative Damien Kurek says he'll step aside for Poilievre — but by law he has to wait
MPs can't resign their seat until 30 days after election result is officially published
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has already taken a trip out to the Alberta riding he hopes to represent, after losing the Ottawa-area seat he held for more than two decades in last week's general election.
On Friday, Battle River-Crowfoot MP Damien Kurek announced he'll step aside so Poilievre can run in the riding, considered one of the safest Conservative seats in the country.
But Poilievre will have to wait at least 30 days for that to happen, and likely more.
According to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Commons, Members of Parliament can't resign their seat until 30 days after their election result is published in the Canada Gazette, the federal government's official publication.
After the 2019 and 2021 federal elections, it took about a month before the chief electoral officer's validated results were published in gazette. CBC News has asked Elections Canada when it expects to publish results this time around.
The Parliament of Canada Act sets out when a member can and can't resign. Olivier Duhaime, spokesperson for the Speaker's office, said the 30-day window is enshrined in the Canada Elections Act and "linked to the contestation period of an election."
"After this period, a member may submit their resignation unless their election is being contested," he said in a statement to CBC News.
Once Kurek is in the clear to resign, it's the Speaker who informs the chief electoral officer that a seat is vacant.

The Governor General, on the advice of the prime minister and cabinet, then sets the date for the byelection. A byelection can be called between 11 and 180 days after an MP resigns.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Friday he won't go the long route.
"I will ensure that it happens as soon as possible. No games, nothing," he told reporters at a news conference.
That could mean Poilievre will be back to leading the Opposition and facing off against the prime minister at some point during the fall sitting.
Kurek first won the seat of Battle River-Crowfoot in 2019 and was re-elected last week with almost 82 per cent of the vote.
In his statement Friday, Kurek said he plans to run in Battle River-Crowfoot again in the next general election
"An unstoppable movement has grown under [Poilievre's] leadership, and I know we need Pierre fighting in the House of Commons to hold the Liberal minority government to account," he said.
Poilievre lost his seat of Carleton to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy by more than 4,000 votes, leaving the Conservatives without its leader in the House of Commons.
Poilievre, originally from Calgary, called Kurek's move "selfless."
Other MPs who stepped aside were rewarded
The Conservative leader posted photos from the riding on Monday, where he met with Kurek's family and team.
In an accompanying video, Poilievre addressed Monday's results for the the first time since his concession speech, acknowledging "it didn't go how we wanted."
"But when you get knocked down, you get up and get going," he said to the camera.
MacKay was re-elected in Central Nova that same year and served in Mulroney's cabinet.
In 1990, New Brunswick MP Fernand Robichaud ceded his riding of Beauséjour so Liberal Party Leader Jean Chrétien could run in a byelection. Chrétien had represented the Saint-Maurice area of Quebec under former prime minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau, but had resigned before making his successful leadership push.
When the 1993 general election rolled around, Chrétien ran in St-Maurice, which includes his hometown of Shawinigan, and Robichaud successfully re-offered in Beauséjour.
Robichaud went on to serve in Chrétien's cabinet and was later appointed to the Senate.
