Indigenous lawyer FORCED OUT after CBC attacks his “libertarian” beliefs

Lawyer who posted Black Lives Matter 'leftist lie' video resigns from Alberta judicial vetting committee

'Members are not required to surrender their right to personal views,' justice minister says

Criminal defence lawyer Leighton Grey's numerous online posts included opinions that legal and anti-racism experts said should disqualify him from being on the Provincial Court Nominating Committee (PCNC).

"I do not accept this resignation decision lightly. Mr. Grey is a successful Indigenous lawyer with an exemplary record of service," Alberta Justice Minister Doug Schweitzer said in a statement Friday.

"I also do not make judgments on Mr. Grey's ability to carry out his professional duties in practising law."

CBC asked several legal and anti-racist experts to review Grey's social media posts and blogs, including Tom Engel, who chairs the policing committee for the Edmonton-based Criminal Trial Lawyers' Association in Alberta.

"My overall impression is that Mr. Grey is on the outer fringe of the right wing and just has no place on a committee ... that is in charge of screening," Engel said.

Bernie Farber, chair of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network, said he was "disturbed on the basis of just pure humanity" when reviewing Grey's commentaries and posts.

"Our expectation is that our government will go through a process to pick the people that are most fair, that are most equitable," Farber said. "The views posted in Mr. Grey's blog, in my view, are extreme."

CBC News reached out to Grey and his law firm several times in recent weeks, but he did not reply to requests for comment.

Lawyer says he's libertarian

Grey has previously been criticized online for his views, and responded to defend his positions.

"I have nothing to do with the alt right. I am a libertarian, which means I may disagree with what you say, but would defend to the death your right to say it," Grey responded online to one critique on LinkedIn in the last week. "I therefore disagree with your criticism of me, but respect your right to voice it."

The justice minister declined an interview. In his statement on Friday, Schweitzer said Grey offered his resignation voluntarily so as not to distract from the committee's work.

"Work on the Committee is far from a full-time job, and members are not required to surrender their right to personal views or commentary," the minister's statement said.

Schweitzer said he was only recently alerted to posts Grey made after his appointment on April 29. However, CBC identified blog posts written by Grey prior to his appointment and shared those with the minister's office weeks ago.

Engel said the fact that Grey made such comments prior to his appointment suggests Alberta officials either did not do adequate background checks, or were not concerned when they did.

"The whole process for screening candidates for the judiciary, the provincial court, has in my view been corrupted," Engel said. "This is an example of it."

Schweitzer appointed Grey to a three-year term on the Provincial Court Nominating Committee as part of an overhaul of the committee's membership. The nominating committee is responsible for reviewing applications from Albertans who wish to become judges. Its members contact references and conduct interviews before recommending candidates to an eligibility list, from which the justice minister selects new judges.

In a CBC investigation earlier this week, governance and judiciary experts criticized Schweitzer's appointments for including a majority of political supporters and for not being done through an open hiring process.

Grey, a senior partner at Grey Wowk Spencer LLP in Cold Lake, is the only criminal defence lawyer on the PCNC.

Several articles Grey recently posted promoted false information and conspiracy theories based on racism and anti-Semitism.

CBC took screenshots of dozens of Grey's posts before he took down his LinkedIn account last week.

For example, Grey re-posted a claim that billionaire philanthropist George Soros, who is a Holocaust survivor, conspired to financially manipulate judges on the European Court of Human Rights. Grey also posted a video that alleged Black Lives Matter "has been hijacked and funded by Soros for his own evil agenda."

Earlier this month, Grey reposted this Russia Today article that falsely claims Soros is linked to European human rights judges. (Leighton Grey/LinkedIn)

Critical of pandemic response

Before his appointment, Grey also wrote blog posts on legalmatterscanada.ca about coronavirus and personal freedoms. In one, he compared Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's pandemic response to the actions of the Nazi Party before the Second World War.

He wrote about how Trudeau and provincial officials had discussed whether to invoke the Emergencies Act, which would give sweeping powers to the federal government. Grey wrote that part of the Emergencies Act "looks an awful lot like its Nazi cousin."

In another post about a potential COVID-19 vaccine, Grey wrote, "The tech Messiah, Bill Gates would have every single man, woman, and child vaccinated and digitally marked, like a tattoo at Auschwitz."

Farber said "comparing the [pandemic] legislation to Adolf Hitler's legislation during the development of racial laws that led to the deaths of millions — never mind six million Jewish men, women and children — is simply an outrage."

Isaac Saney, an African Canadian historian at Dalhousie University who has reviewed Grey's posts, calls them "racist" and "backward."

Saney noted that several of Grey's posts referenced the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, which launched protests for action on systemic racism across North America. Grey disparaged Floyd as sexually promiscuous and disputed the frequency of anti-Black violence.

The posts "seem to be articulating some of the most retrogressive white supremacist ideas that exist out there," Saney said. "Somebody of that nature should not be appointing judges and should be removed from having that kind of very important position in society."

Tasked to consider diverse judiciary

Leighton's law firm website says he is status Indian. The justice ministry's biography of Grey described the lawyer as having acted for more than 200 Indigenous residential school claimants through alternative dispute resolution and independent assessment process hearings. Grey also sits as an adjudicator for the Law Society of Alberta and holds a Queen's Counsel designation.

When Grey announced his appointment to the PCNC on LinkedIn in April, he promised to disregard diversity when doing his work.

When Alberta appointed seven new judges earlier this year, Grey critiqued their gender on LinkedIn. (Leighton Grey/LinkedIn)

"I shall consider it my mission to help select the most qualified candidates, regardless of their race, gender, age, religion, sexual orientation or political affiliation," Grey wrote on LinkedIn. "In short, I pledge to have no regard for identity politics of any kind. Lady Justice does wear a blindfold after all."

Part of the PCNC's mandate, developed by the former NDP government, is to consider diversity when selecting judicial candidates.

Shortly before Grey joined the committee, Alberta's justice minister appointed seven new judges, five of whom were women.

"If Lady Justice is truly blind," Grey wrote at the time, "then why does she see gender?"

Questions about judgment

Evan McIntyre, a director with the Criminal Trial Lawyers' Association, said his organization believes the Alberta government should reassess the suitability of all new PCNC appointees, given Grey's views.

"The question has to be raised whether they were aware of these posts," McIntyre said.

Justice Ministry spokesperson Jonah Mozeson said in an earlier email that the ministry rejects the characterization that the blogs would cause some to question Grey's judgment. He also noted the federal government's proposed use of the Emergencies Act was "widely panned at the time."

Bernie Farber is the chair of the Canadian Anti-Hate Network. (Lisa Xing/CBC)

"It would certainly be unfortunate for the CBC to malign an accomplished First Nations lawyer for advocating checks and balances on state power," Mozeson wrote.

Farber, who has studied hate and radicalization for decades, said the frequency and thoroughness of Grey's posts and blogs suggest the lawyer firmly holds these beliefs, which Farber characterized as racist, anti-Semitic and extreme.

Grey's law firm website details his concerns with "identity politics," "radical feminism" and "indiscriminate mass immigration," among other issues.

Minister defends appointments

After the CBC investigation, the NDP raised the PCNC appointments in Question Period. MLA Ifran Sabir asked the justice minister about Grey's beliefs.

"Does the premier share [Grey's] sexist opinion that there are too many women being appointed as judges in Alberta?" Sabir said. "And if not, will he condemn it right now?"

Schweitzer did not condemn Grey's opinion. "This line of questioning is absolutely disgusting," the minister said.

Schweitzer then pointed out, as CBC reported, that a former PCNC member appointed by the NDP had connections to that party. He said his government had "refreshed" the committee by replacing the members.

The following day, the NDP asked again about the PCNC.

Schweitzer again defended the appointments and noted the committee included, "an Indigenous lawyer who is a leader in his community," a reference to Grey.

Isaac Saney said the fact that the minister defended Grey illustrates a larger issue with the justice system in Alberta.

"This is not just simply a problem with Mr. Grey. We can't just reduce it to one individual," Saney said. "It's a systemic issue, and that requires very significant policy and structural and systemic change."

Tonight as I listened to the lament of the lawyer Leighton Grey about the Justice System to the so called "Commissioners" of the The National Citizens Inquiry I shook my head at the nonsense of it all and wondered if Grey recalled talking to me years ago when he was on top of the wicked game and trying hard to play dumb with me.

Thank you for reaching out to Ontario Premier Doug Ford

As you may know, Writs of Election were issued on May 4, 2022, which signals that the campaign period has begun. This means the Ontario government has entered caretaker mode until the completion of the next general election on June 2, 2022.

In certain instances, your inquiry will be forwarded to the appropriate government official for review but please note that responses may be deferred.

Rest assured that all correspondence is carefully read and given proper consideration.

Thank you again for writing.

Conclusion
(1) All of the scientific data show that the Covid-19 virus poses no serious health risk
to 99.97% of Canadians, and that nearly all deaths directly attributable to the
virus occur in persons over 80 years of age suffering from multiple co-morbidities
and compromised immune systems. The risk of serious illness or death to
persons under the age of 50 remains vanishingly low;
(2) The best scientific data available shows that there is but a 0.7% risk of
asymptomatic spread of the Covid-19 virus—even among persons living in the
same household;
(3) There are no scientific data to support the conclusion that the Covid-19 vaccines
have had any impact upon reducing the spread of the virus. In fact, Israel is the
most universally vaccinated nation in the world, and yet is experiencing a huge
spike in new cases;
(4) There are many reasonable and practical alternatives to mandatory vaccination
that would be more effective at controlling spread of the virus. The Government
of Canada employees, all of which are far less prejudicial than summary
termination of loyal employees exercising their human right and civil liberty to
refuse the vaccine;
(5) On 11 November 2021, in Electrical Safety Authority ("ESA") and Power Workers
Union (the "Union") , Arbitrator Stout Chief Arbitrator John Stout found at
paragraph 36:
In my view, disciplining or discharging an employee for failing to be
vaccinated, when it is not a requirement of being hired and where there is
a reasonable alternative, is unjust. Employees do not park their individual
rights at the door when they accept employment. While an employer has
the right to manage their business, in the absence of a specific statutory
authority or specific provision in the collective agreement, an employer
cannot terminate an employee for breach of a rule unless it meets the
KVP test and found to be a reasonable exercise of management rights.
(6) Mandating employees to take the Covid-19 vaccine violates the fundamental
tenet of medicine known as informed consent, and the Hippocratic medical
maxim - “do no harm”; and
(7) In a recent Ontario Supreme Court case cited as Coutinho v. Ocular Health
Centre Ltd., 2021 ONSC 3076, Justice David Broad found that Ontario’s
Infectious Disease Emergency Leave Regulation (IDEL) enacted at the onset of
the pandemic, does not take away a laid-off employees common-law right to sue
for constructive dismissal. The Plaintiff in that case was placed on an involuntary
unpaid leave of absence by the employer due to COVID-19.
Per the attached Appendices, and for the reasons stated, there is no rational or legal
basis for making Covid-19 vaccination a condition of employment with the Government
of Canada. This violates Provincial, Federal, and International Human Rights statutes,
agreements, and conventions. This is therefore notice to the Government of Canada
that if it proceeds to act upon its threat to suspend without pay, or terminate any of the
named employees whom we represent for the above noted reasons, the following action
shall be taken without any further notice:
1. Legal action shall be commenced against the Government of Canada;
2. Multiple Human Rights Claims shall be filed, alleging violation of ss.7 and 15 of
the Charter and applicable Provincial Human Rights Legislation; and
3. An application shall be brought seeking injunctive relief and punitive damages
against the Government of Canada arising from irreparable damage caused
through violation of the fundamental human rights of the named employees.
We expect that the Government of Canada shall govern itself accordingly. In the
meanwhile, we look forward to hearing from your corporate legal counsel.
Yours truly,
GREY WOWK SPENCER LLP

CEASE & DESIST SERVED TO CORE FEDERAL DEPARTMENTS

Wednesday, January 26, 2022

FEDS FOR FREEDOM

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

This notice is to inform the press and the public at large, that today
the President, Secretary and Chief Human Resources Officer of the
Treasury Board (the official employer of federal public servants) have
been served with a Cease and Desist letter regarding the federal
vaccination mandate for public servants.

Today, January 26th 2022, the lawyers for Feds For Freedom, a
not-for-profit advocacy organization for public servants, served The
Honorable Mona Fortier, Peter Wallace, Christine Donughue along with
all Departmental Ministers of the Core Public Service Administration
under the Treasury Board Secretariat. These documents put the
individuals served on notice that the federal vaccine mandates are
unjustifiable, unconstitutional and criminal in nature. Feds For
Freedom maintains that bodily autonomy and informed consent, free of
coercion, intimidation or bullying are fundamental rights that are
inviolable. The consequences laid out by legal counsel include, but
are not limited to:

    Numerous charter rights challenges;
Legal action against the Government of Canada; and
Applications seeking injunctive relief and punitive damages.

As federal public servants, we have had our livelihoods stripped from
us; we have endured unprecedented amounts stress and hardships. We
have been harassed, ridiculed, mocked and had hatred and violence
incited against us. This type of abusive behavior cannot and will not
be tolerated; we expect and request an expeditious response.

Mayoral candidate, pastor granted release pending contempt hearing for
breaching public health orders

Mayoral candidate Kevin J. Johnston was granted his release Monday
after being arrested Saturday for breaching a court order that
required him to comply with COVID-19 public health restrictions.

But Johnston complained the condition of his release — that he comply
with masking requirements, along with other orders issued by chief
medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw — might be difficult for
him to follow, pending a June 16 contempt of court hearing.

“I’m already feeling the anxiety,” Johnston told a virtual court
hearing, as he sat, masked, in the prisoner’s box in a Calgary Court
of Queen’s Bench courtroom where the judge and lawyers appeared on
video link.

“I simply cannot wear a mask for that period of time,” he said. “I’m
already feeling the anxiety of this right now and I’m sweating. I’m
bothered by having to have this on; I could not possibly wear a mask
for that entire amount of time.”

But Justice Adam Germain told Johnston that he wouldn’t have to wear a
mask 24 hours a day; he only had to comply with restrictions regarding
masking, social distancing and limited attendance at gatherings.

“There’s nothing in these health orders that requires you to wear a
mask in your own abode,” the judge said. “(Your lawyer Ian) McCuaig
will get the health orders and brief you on them.”

McCuaig, who appeared via WebEx from his Toronto office, said Johnston
might raise issues of free speech as a political candidate as a
defence to his alleged breach of the court order restricting his
activities.

Before Johnston’s court appearance, Fairview Baptist Church pastor Tim
Stephens appeared for his release hearing.

Albert Health Services lawyer Kyle Fowler agreed to his release on
condition he comply with a May 6 order prohibiting non-compliance with
public heath guidelines.

Lawyer Leighton Grey said Stephens, who was arrested Sunday for
holding a service without complying with the restrictions, may argue
an amendment to the initial court order of Justice John Rooke meant
that pronouncement no longer applied to the pastor.

He too will face a contempt hearing on June 16.

This was sent to me recently. I certainly was not aware of all this info.

I thought you might be interested in reading it. 😎

An article posted in the Buffalo News by Gerry Boley.

Misconceptions in the United States about Canada are quite common. They include: there is always snow in Canada; Canadians are boring, socialists and pacifists; their border is porous and allowed the Sept. 11 terrorists through; or, as the U.S. Ottawa embassy staff suggested to Washington, the country suffers from an inferiority complex. This is a great time to clarify some of these misconceptions and better appreciate a neighbour that the United States at times takes for granted.

With the exception of the occasional glacier, skiing in Canada in the summer just isn't happening. Frigid northern winters, however, have shaped the tough, fun-loving Canadian character. When it is 30-below, the Canucks get their sticks, shovel off the local pond and have a game of shinny hockey.

The harsh winters have also shaped Canadians' sense of humour. Canada has some of the world's greatest comedians, from early Wayne and Shuster, to Rich Little, Jim Carrey, Russel Peters, Seth Rogan, Mike Myers, Leslie Nielsen, John Candy, Martin Short, Eugene Levy and "Saturday Night Live" creator and movie producer Lorne Michaels.

The suggestion that Canadians are soft on terrorism is a myth. The 9/11 Commission reported that terrorists arrived in the United States from outside North America with documents issued to them by the U.S. government, but Canada was initially linked to allowing the terrorists into the U.S. because of laxed border control. The Canadians in Gander countered despicable terrorist acts with love and caring to their U.S. neighbours when planes were diverted there.

Americans glorify war with movies, but it is the Canadians who are often the real "Rambo." The Canadians are anything but pacifists and their history is certainly not dull. Be it on the ice or battlefield, this warrior nation has never lost a war that it fought in... - War of 1812 (versus the United States), World War I, World War II, Korea and Afghanistan. During the '72 Summit Series, Soviet goalie Vladislav Tretiak said, "'The Canadians have great skills and fight to the very end.'"

In hunting the Taliban in Afghanistan, U.S. Commander and Navy SEAL Capt. Robert Harward stated that the Canadian Joint Task Force 2 team was "his first choice for any direct-action mission."

Contrary to Thomas Jefferson's 1812 comment that, "The acquisition of Canada will be a mere matter of marching," the wily Native American leader Tecumseh and Maj. Gen. Isaac Brock captured Brig. Gen. William Hull's Fort Detroit without firing a shot. The Americans never took Quebec and when they burned the Canadian Parliament Buildings at York, the White House was torched in retaliation.

Canada consolidated its status as a warrior nation during World War I battles at Vimy Ridge, Passchendaele, Somme and the Second Battle of Ypres, where soldiers were gassed twice by the Germans but refused to break the line. By the end of the war, the Canadians were the Allies' shock troops.

In the air, four of the top seven World War I aces were Canadians. Crack shots, the names William "Billy" Bishop, Raymond Collishaw, Donald MacLaren and William Barker, with 72, 60, 54 and 53 victories, respectively, were legendary. These were the original Crazy Canucks, who regularly dropped leaflets over enemy airfields advising German pilots that they were coming over at such and such a time, and to come on up. Bishop and Barker won the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry.

The pilot who is credited with shooting down the Red Baron, Manfred von Richthofen, with a little help from the Australian down under, was not Snoopy but Roy Brown from Carleton Place, Ont.

During World War II, Winnipeg native and air ace Sir William Stephenson, the "Quiet Canadian," ran the undercover British Security Coordination under the code name Intrepid. From Rockefeller Center in New York, as a liaison between Franklin Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. Stephenson invented the machine that transferred photos over the wire for the Daily Mail newspaper in 1922. Americans were not aware that the BSC was there or that it was stocked with Canadians secretly working to preserve North American freedom from the Nazis.

Also little known is that Intrepid trained Ian Fleming, author of the James Bond series, at Camp X, the secret spy school near Whitby, Ont. Five future directors of the CIA also received special training there. It is suggested that Fleming's reference to Bond's 007 license to kill status, his gadgetry and the "shaken not stirred" martinis, rumored to be the strongest in North America, came from Stephenson.

When Wild Bill Donovan, head of the U.S. OSS, forerunner of the CIA, presented Intrepid with the Presidential Medal of Merit in 1946, he said, "William Stephenson taught us everything we knew about espionage."

American military writer Max Boot wrote recently in Commentary magazine that Canada is a country that most Americans consider a "dull but slavishly friendly neighbour, sort of like a great St. Bernard." Boot needs to come to Canada, have a Molson Canadian and chat about Canadian history. He owes his freedom to Canucks such as Stephenson and the courageous soldiers and fliers of the world wars who held off the Germans while America struggled with isolationism.

Canadian inventions such as the oxygen mask Martin Baker ejection system, and anti-gravity suit, the forerunner of the astronaut suit, allowed U.S. and other Allied fighter pilots to fly higher, turn tighter and not black out with the resulting G-force. The 32 Canadians from the Avro Arrow team helped build the American space program and were, according to NASA, brilliant to a man. The most brilliant, Jim Chamberlin, chief designer of the Jetliner and Arrow, was responsible for the design and implementation of the Gemini and Apollo space programs.

Although Canadians have had a free, workable medical system for 50 years, they are not socialists and there are not long lineups, as some politicians opposed to Obama care suggest. This writer has had a ruptured appendix, hip replacement, pinned shoulder, blood clot, twist fracture of the fibula and broken foot, and in every case, there was zero cost to me. Canadians have and value a medical system for all Canadians that is free with minimal waits. That is not socialism; that is caring about fellow Canadians.

Americans may be surprised by the Canadian content in their life. Superman - "truth, justice and the American way" - was co-created by Canadian Joe Shuster, the Daily Planet is based on a Toronto newspaper, and the 1978 film's Lois Lane, Margot Kidder, and Superman's father, Glenn Ford, were both Canadians. The captain of the starship Enterprise was Montreal-born William Shatner. Torontonian Raymond Massey played Abraham Lincoln in 1956. And as American as apple pie? Ah, no. The McIntosh apple was developed in Dundela, Ont., in 1811 by John McIntosh.

Many of the sports that Americans excel at are Canadian in origin. James Naismith from Almonte, Ont., invented basketball. The tackling and ball carrying in football were introduced by the Canucks in games between Harvard and McGill in the 1870s. Five-pin bowling is also a Canadian game. Lacrosse is officially Canada's national sport, and hockey - well, Canadians are hockey. And Jackie Robinson called Montreal "the city that enabled me to go to the major leagues."

To make everyone's life easier, Canadians invented Pablum, the electric oven, the telephone, Marquis wheat, standard time, the rotary snowplow, the snowmobile, Plexiglas, oven cleaner, the jolly jumper, the pacemaker, the alkaline battery, the caulking gun, the gas mask, the goalie mask, the zipper, Tetra Packs, IMAX movies and many more.

Canadian inferiority complex? That is another myth. Never pick a fight with a quiet kid in the schoolyard. Never mistake quiet confidence for weakness. Many a bully has learned that the hard way.

Canadians are self-effacing and do not brag. That does not mean we do not know who we are. We are caring but tough, fun-loving but polite and creative, and we share with each other and the world. Our history is exciting but we don't toot our horn. The world does that for us. This is the third year in a row that Canada has been voted the most respected country in the world by the Reputation Institute global survey.

Perhaps once a year around our collective birthdays, Americans can raise a toast to their friendly, confident neighbour in the Great White North.

U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods will come into effect Saturday, White House says

New Brunswickers can expect to feel the pain from tariffs, business leaders say

The White House on Friday said U.S. President Donald Trump's deadline on tariffs still stands as Feb. 1

When it comes to the impact New Brunswickers may feel from U.S. President Donald Trump's promised 25 per cent tariff on Canadian exports, Ron Marcolin, Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters' divisional vice president for New Brunswick, said prepare for the worst.

"I think it is going to definitely hurt," said Marcolin.

"Consumers in this province have to realize that they may have sticker shock and ... feel some short term pain."

Marcolin said while some industries, such as oil and gas, forestry and agriculture, will be particularly impacted, no industry is immune.

While tariffs were an issue during the last Trump presidency, specifically on steel and aluminum, their target nature meant some industries were spared the worst.

. Ron Marcolin of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association says people should prepare for the worst. (CBC)

That won't be the case this time around.

"We'll feel the pain — we'll feel it immediately," said Marcolin

Marcolin said while manufacturers can adjust somewhat and sell more goods domestically, in many cases that's not possible.

He said a lot of the manufactured goods in New Brunswick are bespoke to the needs of a particular company, often an American one, so they can't just be sent to other markets.

Many companies have also linked themselves heavily with the U.S. market because of its geographic closeness and appetite for Canadian goods, but manufacturers are exploring other markets.

"This type of threat of tariff, though, allows the business owner in New Brunswick to say, 'OK, let's at least look at other markets and other options," he said.

Marcolin said manufacturers are looking more closely at markets in Mexico, Europe and Asia.

And it's not just manufacturers that will have to deal with tariffs, exporters will also be affected.

A man wearing a blazer and black-rimmed glassesCraig Estabrooks, the president and CEO of Port Saint John, said most of export business at the port doesn't go to the United States. (CBC)

Craig Estabrooks, CEO of Port Saint John, said they're working with the province to understand the effect of potential tariffs and what can be done to mitigate the damage.

When it comes to the port, the biggest loser may be the oil businesses.

"The liquid bulk business that is owned and operated by Irving Oil would be a very large exporter to the United States. So that's something we think about a lot," said Estabrooks.

However, it appears the port's growing container business may avoid the brunt of tariffs.

"Our container services today do not export to the United States," said Estabrooks.

"The five container services we have today are north-south to the Caribbean and Latin America and then a lot of trade to Northern Europe and the Mediterranean."

A woman While Canadians will no doubt suffer from any tariffs, so will U.S. consumers, according to Michelle Robichaud, president of the Atlantica Centre for Energy. (Rachel Cave/CBC)

While Canadians will no doubt suffer from any tariffs, so will U.S. consumers, Michelle Robichaud, president of the Atlantica Centre for Energy, said.

Robichaud said a lot of products used in the New England region are produced or finished in the Maritimes, and any increase in price will impact our neighbours to the south.

One place New Englanders are likely to feel the pinch in their pockets is when they gas up.

"Eight out of 10 cars in the northeast U.S. are fuelled by the refined petroleum products that come from Saint John," said Robichaud.

"Ninety per cent of the jet fuel that goes into some extremely busy airports — Boston, Portland — that jet fuel comes from New Brunswick."

Tariff pressures

President Donald Trump's tariffs on Canadian imports might be just a few days away. Jeanne Armstrong spoke to Ron Marcolin, the New Brunswick head of Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, as they brace themselves for what's to come.

Robichaud said businesses would likely have tried to move as much product into the U.S. as possible before any tariff goes into effect.

"They have been doing that since Trump was elected, stockpiling as they can," said Robichaud.

"They are preparing for reduced orders out of the U.S. They are preparing for an increase in price."

Trump said there’s nothing we can do about it. His excuses for the tariffs seemed pretty thin so all the attempts to placate him seemed to play to his riff but he wasn’t really serious about a lot of it, imo. He was pulling our chain. I mean, what does fentanyl or immigration really have to do with tariffs? Maybe he was surprised we went for it? The fact that he loves even the word tariffs so much indicates he likes the idea.

The only thing that I see tariffs as good for is to stimulate local industry to expand and create a domestic supply independent of foreign suppliers. That may be his reasoning but he doesn’t like many of us. He has friends here he says, but we call him a bully and we were never very nice or polite to him, especially our media.

And a lot of our rancour was in lock step with the partisans against him in his own country. It was organized and profitable for his opposition, and I mean money. Now he has power again, this is one way to use it to become more independent.

Being friendly and bowing helps. Pence did, and it worked well for him. Except of course for the noose waiting for him at the end. Condolences to the families of the Capitol Police who lost their lives :(

Being nice has a lot to do with reason, in my opinion. It’s a word that has changed significantly over the centuries to mean the opposite of its original meaning. There’s a cut off sometimes but it doesn’t have to be us that forsakes reason and Christian charity, if we actually believe in that. There’s nothing wrong with trying to reason with Trump but trying to run a play around him is foolish imo. We should simply accept what he’s doing and we can become more independent of them when they do it to us. I don’t think reprisals are the answer but it takes all kinds to make a Canada and an America.

I think it’s reasonable to say Jan. 6 was an attempt at a semi hard coup. But so was the convoy in Canada. That’s what we really have to watch out for.

Bob Leeson
Reply to Chris Jones
Recent history (well since Trump has been alive), has shown anyone/anything gets thrown under the bridge when those he uses begin to fail in executing his agenda. Let's not cave into furthering his questionable agenda. It will not work out for us in the end. Canada isn't any more special to him than any other entity he's used to further his goals.

Chris Jones
Reply to Bob Leeson
I agree that we can’t stop the tariffs but maybe states and provinces can work out independent agreements. But to do it federally is more risky. And USA control of our information space means we are still very vulnerable to more soft coups. It took a lot of denigration and calumny and slander but oil and gas, and a USA deep state never loved Trudeau anyway. He had his faults and I’m shut down about them also but they got rid of him, imo, and he was the best of a bad lot, and not too bad. Sometimes that’s all we get.

Bob Leeson

Yes, I'm certain your leader would gladly retain her position as governor of her state by making an independent "agreement" with the US. Unlike you, I stand for our nation however, along with the other provinces of our great country.

It may not be reasonable but I love Obama.

We are reminded that, in the fleeting time we have on this Earth, what matters is not wealth, or status, or power, or fame, but rather how well we have loved and what small part we have played in making the lives of other people better.

Barack Obama

Well actually it is reasonable to tell you that. It’s the one thing that might be. lol.

When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything, you just let them talk.

Amid Alberta referendum questions, Houston says Canada is better united

Premier says N.S. doing its part for national unity by pursuing resource development

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston says he's not given much thought to whether legislation advanced by his counterpart in Alberta would make it easier for that province to leave Canada, but he believes the country is stronger if it remains united.

"The premier will do what she thinks is right for Albertans. That's what premiers do," Houston told reporters following a news conference Tuesday.

"So I have respect for each of us having our own challenges and responsibilities and trying to find our best way through them."

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's government recently introduced legislation that would lower the threshold required to get a referendum question before the public.

The bill comes at a time when some Albertans are advocating for the province to separate from Canada to become its own country and Smith has called on Prime Minister Mark Carney to reset the relationship between Ottawa and her province.

Houston said Tuesday he's "focused on a united Canada."

"That's what's best," he said. "The things that are within our control, we'll do those."

Houston said his government is doing its part "to maintain natural unity" through a more aggressive advancement of natural resource development opportunities than what's been seen by previous Nova Scotia governments.

"We've looked away while people in the West developed resources," he said. "We're going to address that."

Premier supports pipeline

The Progressive Conservatives recently passed legislation to lift bans on uranium exploration and mining and hydraulic fracturing for onshore natural gas. Houston has also been a vocal supporter for a west-to-east pipeline to move Alberta oil to New Brunswick refineries, along with the need to break down interprovincial trade barriers.

Western Canadians have concerns that deserve to be addressed, said Houston, adding that the best way to do that is as one country.

Houston was asked about the difference in tone he was striking on the potential of a referendum in Alberta and last month when he blasted Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet for calling Canada an "artificial country."

"I don't think there's any similarities, really. The Bloc leader was pretty clear that he's not interested in a united Canada and that he would stop things that would make Canada stronger, like pipelines," he said.

"I am interested in a united Canada. I think Canadians are, and I believe the premier [of Alberta] is, too."

ALBERTA SEPARATION HANGS ON THE EDGE OF A KNIFE

I am writing this with a deep sense of optimism, married to the unshakeable knowledge that the coming years will be the hardest of my life. We have crossed the Rubicon. With the election of Mark Carney and the announcement yesterday that there will be no federal budget this year, we now know that democracy in Canada is dying. I won’t even get into the absolute joke that so many of these judicial recounts with Elections Canada have been, we don’t need to. The truth is so much worse. The Canadian government does not even respect its citizens enough to let their elected representatives review government spending. They are openly ignoring the entire tradition of representative democracy, and they have calculated that Canadians will not care. Tragically, they are probably right.

Meanwhile, in Alberta, we have a Premier who has explicitly said she does not support separation. She is actively pressuring her MLAs to order their Constituency Associations not to bring forward any kind of policy about separation at the UCP AGM this fall. Worse, she is launching yet another “panel” to “listen” to Albertans, instead of simply doing what she already knows we want. Separation will be impossible while Danielle Smith remains Premier. We cannot have a federalist negotiating separation with other federalists.

Despite this, the Alberta Prosperity Project has accumulated more than 250,000 pledges to sign a petition calling for a separation referendum, just in the two and a half weeks since Carney became Prime Minister. A new separatist party, the Republican Party of Alberta, has formed and already boasts half the membership of the United Conservative Party. Poll after poll shows that 30–35% of Albertans support separation. And this is before any province-wide campaign has even begun to educate people on just how badly Alberta is being treated by Ottawa. No matter what Danielle Smith or the UCP say or do, the defining issue in Alberta politics in the coming years will be separation.

The mainstream media, and even much of the so-called “right-wing” media, remain skeptical of separation. People are always skeptical of change, especially when it threatens their interests. Proponents of separation are mocked by Eastern elites, and there is an ingrained disbelief in Eastern Canada that Albertans would ever truly attempt to separate. That skepticism is not without reason. A successful separation campaign in Alberta will require a miracle. It will demand real sacrifices, thousands of Albertans putting their livelihoods, reputations, and futures on the line. Both the federal and provincial governments will do everything in their power to stop us. This will not be like the Quebec referendums, where Canadians begged Quebec to stay. This will be all-out political warfare, waged by any means necessary, to keep Alberta chained to a system that exploits us. We are the economic engine of Canada, and they will not let us go easily.

Those who truly want to build a new nation must understand the scale of the battle ahead. This will not be a simple vote. It will not be a conventional exercise in democracy. It will be the greatest political struggle of our lives, and the entire system will be rigged against us. That thought fills many with despair. I’ve heard it said too often: “We’ll never win a referendum.” The arguments for failure are endless, and everyone knows them. But I ask: When did we stop believing that great things can be accomplished? Anyone with even a passing understanding of history knows that borders shift, nations rise and fall, and determined people have built new countries from nothing. Somehow, we’ve forgotten that this is still possible. We’ve stopped dreaming. We’ve accepted a status quo that is impoverishing us and stealing the futures of our children and grandchildren. The question isn’t whether separation is possible, it absolutely is. The only question is whether Albertans have the will to make it happen.

In the coming months, every leader in the separatist movement will be attacked. Agents will be planted to sow division. Egos will be exploited to destroy unity. And when those tactics fail, people will be slandered and publicly vilified simply for being involved. I know this personally, I have already felt the full force of the state being used to try to silence me. Others will face the same. We saw it happen to the Freedom Convoy, and that was a low-stakes protest compared to breaking up a nation. So when you hear vile things said about someone in the separatist movement, pause. Ask yourself: Who benefits from the division being sown among us? The answer is clear, those who want to see us fail.

If we want to succeed, we must change how we think about politics. Too many still believe politics is about picking a leader. That is why leaders hold so much power in our current system. The system was designed to limit that power, but citizens have forgotten how it works. They’ve drifted into building cults of personality rather than building democratic movements. That tendency will be our undoing. We cannot make this movement about individual personalities or even individual leaders. We must be united by one clear vision: An Independent Alberta. As long as we keep that vision central, we can succeed. But if we allow ourselves to become distracted by egos and infighting, we will fail.

This will not be easy. It is not supposed to be. Every generation dreams that someone else will bear the burden, that freedom can be won without fire, that nations can be born without labour. But history does not work that way. It never has. There is no greatness without sacrifice. No liberty without cost. No future for our children unless we are willing to pay the price today. That price will be high. You will be mocked. You will be lied about. You will be hated. Some of you will lose jobs, reputations, even relationships. But you must ask yourself - what is all of that worth if you are living as a subject, not a citizen? If your children grow up in a nation where they have no say, no power, no future, what was your comfort even for?

This is not a normal political moment. This is not just another debate between Left and Right. This is the hour where history demands something more from us. We must become the kind of people who build nations, not with slogans, but with sacrifice. Alberta will not be free because we tweeted about it. Alberta will be free because we were willing to bleed for it. That is what lies before us now. The final question is not whether we are strong enough to win, but whether we are willing to suffer for something greater than ourselves. If we are, then no empire, no media machine, and no political class can stop what is coming. A free and independent Alberta, if we are willing to pay the price.

Ezra Levant

Ezra Levant

Credentials

Background

Ezra Levant is a Canadian television and radio personality, conservative political activist, and author of Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada’s Oil Sands, the book that popularized the phrase “Ethical Oil,” which is now being used by the conservative government in Canada as justification for the expansion of the Athabasca tar sands.

He is the founder and former publisher of The Western Standard, and formerly ran his own Sun TV program “The Source.” Sun News shut down in 2015 after failing to find a new owner. After Sun Media shut down, Levant moved his reporting to Rebel Media where he is “Rebel Commander.” iPolitics described the site as “the de facto epicenter of Canadian right-leaning political discourse.”3 4 5

In his early years, Levant undertook an internship with the Charles G. Koch Foundation’s Summer Fellowship program in 1994, and then proceeded to work for the Fraser Institute in 1995 where he wrote Youthquake, which argued for smaller government and privatization of the Canada Pension Plan.6

According to a search of the Office of the Commissioner of Lobbying of Canada, from 2009 until 2010, Levant worked as a lobbyist for Rothman’s Incorporated, a manufacturer and distributor of tobacco products.7

Charlottesville Controversy

Controversy hit shortly after The Rebel’s Faith Goldy’s broadcast from the alt-right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. According to The National Post, Goldy “had spoken sympathetically of a rising ‘white racial consciousness’ and dispassionately about the ‘JQ’ or Jewish question, a longtime obsession of white nationalists.” Maclean’s noted that Goldy repeatedly called marchers on the side of white nationalists “patriots.” She was still broadcasting when a car rammed into the protesters behind her.8 9 10

After Goldy’s coverage, Rebel cofounder Brian Lilley quit and a number of contributors walked away. Lilley announced on a Facebook post that he no longer felt “comfortable” being part of the organization. Levant claimed that he had fired Levant last year.11 12

“What may have started as a concern over the (Rebel’s) harsh tone taken on some subjects came to a head with this weekend’s events in Charlottesville, Virginia,” Lilley said in a Facebook post. Lilley said the protest “was really an anti-Semitic white power rally.”13

Levant said he had no choice but to fire Goldy after she went on a podcast from the white supremacist news site Daily Stormer, which he wrote “was just too far. So we said goodbye.”14

After the events, a number of conservative politicians in Canada including Jason Kenney, Brian Jean, and Andrew Scheer publicly distanced themselves from The Rebel.15

Later that week, Caolan Robertson, formerly one of The Rebel’s U.K. correspondents, posted a YouTube video titled “Why I Left The Rebel Media,” where he played recordings of what he claimed was Levant offering “hush money” to stay quiet regarding aspects of The Rebel. Robertson criticized The Rebel further in the video, saying “The Rebel takes its money from ordinary hardworking people […] But, it also quietly takes a lot of money from less ordinary, more wealthy people.” Note that the original video is no longer on YouTube.16

Levant responded to Robertson’s video, claiming that Robertson and another man were blackmailing him:17

The Washington Times reported on August 21 that the Rebel Media website was “was abruptly terminated for roughly half of his global audience.” A technology company, which Levant did not name, stopped directing traffic to some users internationally. Levant said he was given 24 hours notice and no explanation for the action.18

“If this was a political censorship decision, it is terrifying – like a phone company telling you it is cancelling your phone number on 24 hours notice because it doesn’t like your conversations,” Levant told Reuters.19

During the same week, the advocacy group Press Progress released a report claiming that Levant had received an undisclosed amount of funding from the Middle East Forum in 2015.20

After the events, Levant said the site would not necessarily shut down:21

“I’m a flawed leader who has made mistakes,” he wrote in a post on The Rebel. “But as long as you stand with me, I will still stand.” He added, “I think we need more oversight — not more censorship — just to make sure we’re really being on brand with what we believe, what we stand for.”22

Rebel News & Extremist Groups

The Proud Boys have been described as an extremist group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and in Feb. 2021 were labeled a terrorist group in Canada.23 24

McInnes founded the Proud Boys in 2016. In 2018, McInnes publicly stated that he was “officially disassociating” himself from the far right group shortly after the FBI had categorized the Proud Boys as “an extremist group with ties to white nationalism” in a briefing to Washington state law enforcement.25 26

In a September 2019 interview with Ezra Levant, Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes said that his early relationship with Rebel News was what helped him become famous. Levant said he had also benefited from that relationship:27

Ezra Levant: [00:00:03] “You really helped build The Rebel in a number of ways. I want to tell you that. I think you know that. You helped us reach beyond guys like me who came up through politics.” [00:00:11]

Gavin McInnes: [00:00:11] “You made me famous, unfortunately, which I don’t like.” [00:00:14]

Ezra Levant: [00:00:15] “Weren’t you famous before?” […]

Gavin McInnes: [00:00:17] “No, I was never recognized before Rebel.” [00:00:19]

Ezra Levant: [00:00:19] “Well, I mean, you did hundreds of videos and you were the star of all the videos. So I guess you became famous.” [00:00:24]

Gavin McInnes: [00:00:24] “No. Yeah, I did hundreds of videos for you, you mean?” [00:00:26]

Ezra Levant: [00:00:26] “Yeah.” [00:00:26]

Gavin McInnes: [00:00:26] “Yeah, yeah, yeah. Before that I did some comedy sketches. I’d get recognized maybe once a week. After the Rebel videos blew up, I am stopped by millennials, mostly white millennial men, five times a day. And they all want a selfie, which is infuriating because what are you doing with that selfie? Like we’re not friends.” [00:00:45]

A search for “Gavin” in Rebel Media’s YouTube page returns over 300 videos.

Gavin McInnes left the Rebel in August 2017.28

“Gavin’s a great friend and a great talent,” Rebel Media founder Ezra Levant told Canadaland in an email. “We tried to keep him, but he was lured away by a major competitor that we just couldn’t outbid.”

According to Canadaland: “McInnes was one of The Rebel’s earliest hosts, joining the company in April 2015, shortly after it launched.”

McInnes published a video titled “10 Things I Hate About Jews”on Rebel News in March, 2017.29

Two days earlier, Rebel News published a video on YouTube titled “What Gavin McInnes really thinks about the Holocaust.”

According to Canadaland, Levant changed the title to “10 Things I Hate About Israel” within 12 hours. “I chose both headlines,” Rebel head Ezra Levant told Canadaland in an email. “I liked the first one because it was provocative; but then I changed it to the second one because it was more descriptive. I should probably have stayed with my first instincts.”30

Rebel reporter Sheila Gunn Reid also appeared on a 2019 podcast alongside a representative from the Calgary chapter of the Proud Boys to discuss “the Antifa and leftist history of assault.”31

This isn’t the only time staff for the Rebel have been tied to far-right extremist groups. Keean Bexte, a journalist at Rebel News was previously found to have worked for the “white supremacist web store” Fireforce Ventures by investigative reporters.32

According to an investigation by Ricochet, the online military surplus store’s “primary focus is the white-minority-rule state of Rhodesia, and its flagship product is a reproduction of the Rhodesian brushstroke, a camouflage pattern developed during Rhodesia’s dirty war against indigenous Africans.”33

“Fireforce personnel use pseudonyms when engaging in company affairs, but a Ricochet investigation has revealed ties to both the Canadian military and the far right,” Ricochet reported.

Bexte confirmed he had worked at the company “doing graphic design and shipping orders” until resigning “a few months” prior to the November 2018 piece.34

Bexte attended the Capitol insurrection in the US on behalf of the Rebel, In a Jan. 11, 2021 video, Bexte calls the insurrection a “disaster, by every measure,” claiming that “99.99 percent” of the protesters had been peaceful.35

In a February 5, 2021 Rebel News podcast, Bexte defended the Proud Boys following the group’s classification as a terrorist group by Canada.36

Stance on Climate Change

June 2017

After Donald Trump announced U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement, Ezra agreed with his decision, but said he didn’t go far enough when he mentioned there was room to renegotiate.37

“”Global warming is designed to scam America, more than any other country,” Levant said in a TheRebel.media video. “That’s not my opinion. That’s a fact.”38

2016

“The world is over 400 parts per million of carbon dioxide and global warming has stopped … it’s paused. There is no correlation between carbon dioxide and global warming. If there was, you would sure see it. But there isn’t, so you don’t.”39

2012

Ezra describes man-made global warming as “a theory that has been cast into disrepute through not only the misconduct of its high priests but by scientific observation itself: There has been no measurable global warming since 1998, according to satellite weather data.”40

Key Quotes

August 2017

After controversy surrounding The Rebel‘s coverage of events in Charlottseville, among other issues, Levant wrote at The Rebel:

“I’m a flawed leader who has made mistakes. But as long as you stand with me, I will still stand.” He added, “I think we need more oversight — not more censorship — just to make sure we’re really being on brand with what we believe, what we stand for.”41

July 2016

“I don’t know if Donald Trump will be the next president. I do know that our key allies are walking away from the global warming mania of the past decade.

Only Trudeau is stupid enough and ideologically malicious enough to destroy our own economy — and Alberta, the province that he and his father have always despised — by using global warming as an excuse…”42

March 2014

“I’m a commentator, I’m a pundit,” he said to the judge. “I don’t think in my entire life I’ve ever called myself a reporter.”43

March 2012

“It is a perverse faith, in that it reveres the “environment” ahead of people who live in it. It is a most ascetic superstition, in that it demands we live less happily and less freely and with less prosperity– the opposite of, say, the Protestant work ethic that helped build Ontario.”44

September 2010

“And if our goal as moral citizens is to make the world a better place, then there is only once choice: to pump as much oil as we possibly can out of Fort McMurray. Pump and steam and dig and drill and get that oil out of the sand in any and every way we can. Every drop of oil from Alberta is one less drop from some fascist theocracy, or some brutal warlord; one less cent into the treasuries of Russia’s secret police and al-Qaeda’s murderers.”45

“The famous statue of Christ the Redeemer that overlooks Rio de Janeiro is only 130 feet tall. McGuinty’s eco-idols [Wind Turbines] will be three times that height, but will serve the same imposing purpose.

“Do not confuse McGuinty’s belief system with a true faith. It is a superstition, the tenets of which are capable of being scientifically disproven.

Ezra Levant’s Social Media Posts on US Insurrection

Levant was among dozens of the individuals and organizations profiled in DeSmog’s Disinformation Database who posted online or gave interviews about the events surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection. Some posted claims of election fraud, similar to those that drove the Stop the Steal rally on Jan. 6. Some circulated dubious information about the insurrection itself. DeSmog has preserved a selection of notable posts related to the events of Jan. 6, 2021, including some that were later deleted or removed.

For example, on Jan. 10, 2021, Levant retweeted a tweet by @Cernovich that compared the Capitol insurrection, where five died, to a 2017 attack where a gunman opened fire on a congressional Republican baseball team practice, striking Rep. Steve Scalise in the hip and wounding several others before being fatally shot himself. Mike Cernovich’s Southern Poverty Law Center’s profile describes him as “one of America’s most visible right-wing provocateurs, known for boosting or generating massively successful conspiracy theories like #Pizzagate. He made his career on trolling the liberal establishment by accusing people of pedophilia or child sex trafficking.”46 47 48 49

Levant retweeted a claim by Andy Ngo that John Earle Sullivan, one of the participants in the Capitol insurrection was a Black Lives Matter activist. On Jan. 16, 2021, the Washington Post published a profile reporting that Sullivan had been disavowed by left-wing organizers long before the insurrection. “Activists in Utah have spent months condemning Sullivan, who has at turns identified himself as a racial justice protester and leftist documentarian, and they have warned others to be leery of his motives and any events he sponsored,” the Post wrote, adding that Sullivan has a history of “alienating activists on both ends of the political spectrum” and had organized a demonstration that “featured members of the Proud Boys, an all-male extremist group with ties to white nationalism.”50

Key Actions

September 14, 2021

Following Patrick Moore‘s claims he was “deplatformed” from a speech in Regina, Canada, Ezra Levant booked the Conexus Art Center to feature Moore for his cancelled talk.51

Speaking of the event Moore was originally set to speak at, Levant commented:52

“He would have been definitely the star speaker at the conference, but then a cancel culture mob, including city officials and frankly, the local left wing media, they whipped up a fake frenzy and the city absolutely disgraced themselves by reneging on their invitation to him.”

In addition to basic event tickets, Levant also said they were selling an “exclusive VIP wine and cheese reception” as well as a “private dinner with Dr. Moore after the speech.”

August 22, 2017

Ezra Levant interviewed ClimateDepot’s Marc Morano on The Ezra Levant Show. During the interview, Morano said that Steve Bannon’s departure from the White House was a huge loss for climate change deniers.53

Morano: “We’ve lost a major voice. Now, you’re right, Scott Pruitt’s a great voice. Energy Secretary Rick Perry has been a great voice, but it doesn’t change the fact we’ve lost a major skeptic in the White House with influence and power. You guys remember, personnel is power.”

Levant: “That’s a good point. And, as you they say, personnel is policy as well. […]”54

Morano also described his experience while working in the U.S. Senate for Senator James Inhofe. Morano said that he was told by members of his own staff in the Environment & Public Works Committee to “lay off” of pushing climate change skepticism because it was affecting their ability to get jobs, “because Inhofe was being painted as an extremist for denying global warming.”55

“It matters. People don’t want to stand up to the Washington establishment because it means jobs, it means money, it means reputation. And that is why the loss of someone like Bannon has a big impact.”56

June 3, 2017

Shortly after Donald Trump announced he would be withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate agreement, Ezra Levant reported at TheRebel.media that Trump “was right to reject the ‘Global Warming Scam’.” Video below.57

Levant said that Trump “doesn’t go quite far enough in my books,” given his mention of a potential of renegotiating the agreement. “Either the whole thing’s a scam, or it isn’t,” Levant adds. “Global warming is designed to scam America, more than any other country. That’s not my opinion. That’s a fact.”

November 2016

The Financial Post reports that Ezra Levant was successful in his battle with the United Nations to have his staff members accredited to cover the climate change conference in Morocco. While he was granted two spots, Ezra continued to push for a third.58

DeSmog notes that during Levant’s campaign for accreditation, he has repeatedly shown footage from the last major climate change talks in Paris to bolster his case. He claims that the footage shows journalists in the Paris media room “jumping for joy”:59

Levant has told viewers: “Here’s a clip from the UN global warming convention last year showing journalists in the press room cheering.”60

In another Rebel video, Levant says: “The most striking video clip of the entire Paris conference last year was when an international agreement was finally announced and the media room burst into applause and cheering. Some actually jumping for joy – you know, the way objective reporters do.”61

However, DeSmog found that the video shown was not of journalists, and was not filmed in “the media room,” as Levant claimed. Instead the clip shows a side room apart from the media center where civil society groups who campaigned for action on climate change were watching the final moments of the climate talks.62

The clip was originally shared by a passing journalist, Miranda Johnson of The Economist, who confirmed that the Rebel did not seek permission to use her footage, and if it had, would have been refused. Original video below:63

The Rebel is crowfunding its trip to Marrakech. The Rebel writes: “One thing we won’t scrimp on is security, though — especially in a place like Morocco. So we need a driver/handler to make sure we get to and from the conference site each day safely.”

COP22’s website notes that visitors have access to official shuttle buses running 12 routes, each route covered from 6am until midnight and, in peak hours, running every 15 minute. Levant is trying to raise more than CA$27,000 for the India trip, including $14,000 to hire a private security firm.64 65

October 2016

After the United Nations declined accreditation to three of The Rebel’s journalists who planned to cover the climate change conference in Marrakech, Morocco. Ezra Levant launched a petition titled ”Tell the UN to stop blacklisting our journalists!” and argues that the ban is an attack on free speech.66

The journalists Levant planned to send included Sheila Gunn Reid, Alberta bureau chief, Meaghan MacSween, a producer, formerly with Global News and Sun News Network, and Alex Jones also formerly of Sun News Network. According to screenshots shared by Levant, the UN has declined the application because “advocacy media outlets do not qualify for media accreditation.”67

Earlier in September, Desmog attended a screening of Marc Morano’s Climate Hustle in Edmonton, Alberta, where Ezra Levent outlined some of his plans for the upcoming conference in Marrakech. Levant told the audience that “we will be asking questions and turning the camera around to show the other journalists,” to ridicule reporters who he describes as “cheerleaders” for the UN. Answering questions later, Levant said he planned to “put on a disguise” at the conference.68

During a Q&A session following the Climate Hustle screening, Levant says that climate change denier Marc Morano will be an “honorary Rebel journalist” in Morocco. Gunn Reid, one of Levant’s proposed Morocco team, described people who believe in global warming as a “doomsday cult.”69

Levant has described his attempts to get accreditation as a “fight for press freedom.” In an October 19 episode of The Ezra Levant Show, Levant said “There’s no bigger bully than the U.N.”70

December 29, 2015

In an episode of The Ezra Levant Show titled “Best of 2015 – Climate change hysteria,” Levant goes on to show “some of the most inaccurate global warming predictions ever.” Guests include Lorrie Goldstein of the Toronto Sun and prominent climate change denier Marc Morano of ClimateDepot.com.71

“The world is over 400 parts per million of carbon dioxide and global warming has stopped […] it’s paused,” Levant said. “There is no correlation between carbon dioxide and global warming. If there was, you would sure see it. But there isn’t, so you don’t.”72

March 7, 2014

Ezra Levant testified in his defense in his libel suit. The National Post reported that “His evidence-in-chief was part soliloquy, part lecture and all theatre, as befits the man who begins his prime-time, five-days-a-week show on Sun TV with a monologue which, as he told Judge Wendy Matheson, once went on so long ‘we had to cancel the commercials’ because it had morphed into a ‘rant’ of an hour.”73

The Post notes that Ezra, by his own admission, is not a journalist: “I’m a commentator, I’m a pundit,” he said to the judge. “I don’t think in my entire life I’ve ever called myself a reporter.”74

Levant is alleged to have libelled Khurrum Awan, a Saskatchewan lawyer who had been part of a group of Osgoode Hall law students that had made formal hate-speech complaints regarding a Maclean’s magazine cover story bout Muslims. Levant had live-blogged at Awan’s human rights hearing in Vancouver, calling Awan a liar.75

In court, Levant repeated the alleged libels and “used the word ‘liar’ because ‘that’s what it was.’”76

April 2012

Ezra Levant’s EthicalOil.org, which some argue is a lobby organization for the oil industry, accused the David Suzuki Foundation of “Partisan and Political activity,” and demanded that the foundation’s charitable status be reviewed.

The complaint was made in a 44-page letter to the CRA.

March 9, 2011

Ezra Levant and Alykhan Velshi worked together to form the Ethical Oil Institute and its website EthicalOil.org.

DeepClimate prepared an in-depth report on the formation of the “grassroot” organization, and also reveals that both Levant and Velshi shared involvement with the Harper-led conservatives.77

Levant’s other partner at the Institute is Calgary lawyer Thomas Ross, who is a partner at the law firm McLellan Ross and one of the leaders of the firm’s OilSandsLaw.com initiative (“dedicated to working with those operating in the Canadian oil sands”).

The same search lists him as a past lobbyist for “Achieve Energy Services,” a construction management company that specializes in pipeline construction.

DeSmog also reported connections between EthicalOil.org, oil interests, and the Harper Government, as well as other conservative leaders and groups. At the core is “GoNewclear,” a communications agency run by Hamish Marshall, husband of former Ethical Oil spokesperson Kathryn Marshall and a former Conservative campaigner.

EthicalOil.org has been a strong proponent of the Northern Gateway Pipeline Project, and launched the website OurDecision.ca to push for the project’s approval.

EthicalOil.org’s former manager Kathryn Marshall refused to answer the question of whether the Ethical Oil Institute received funding from Enbridge, which many viewed as suggesting a possible connection.

December 2011

Ezra Levant featured well-known climate change skeptic Lord Christopher Monckton, whom Ezra describes as “a bit of a hero of mine” as a guest on his show, The Source. Ezra later describes Monckton as “a bit of a scientist,” not mentioning Monckton’s primary background is in journalism.78 79

Ezra asks Monckton about Britain “foolishly signing on to these foreign treaties like Kyoto…” and goes on to mention a “socialist experiment” and “junk science” in the same statement. He later refers to Monckton’s skepticism of the “pagan faiths of environmentalism.”

Monckton describes the implementation of climate change policies as “taking away our democracy little by little so no one notices until suddenly it’s too late … and that is what I’m trying to stop.”

Monckton is not the only climate change skeptic that Ezra has interviewed on his show. In January, 2012, Levant featured Timothy Ball on his show and discussed Ball’s belief that there has been no global warming since 1998, a debunked argument that has long been popular with climate change skeptics.80

Levant also featured skeptic Tom Harris, previous director of the High Park Group lobbying firm, who believes that the sun is behind climate change (another popular, and largely debunked climate change skeptic talking point).81

September 2010

Ezra Levant published Ethical Oil: The Case for Canada’s Oil Sands, which makes a case for further developing Alberta’s tar sands and sister projects. His book has popularized the concept of “ethical oil” which has been used by the the Conservative government of Stephen Harper and provided the inspiration behind Alykhan Velshi’s “Ethical Oil” campaign in the United States and Canada.

Levant’s basic thesis is that the Canadian petroleum industry is “heads above other crude producers like Saudi Arabia, Libya, Nigeria and Venezuela” which is the equivalent of conflict oil.

According to Levant, “If we actually want to make the world a better place, a more moral place, the ethical thing to do is to pump as much oil as we possibly can out of the oil sands, knowing that every barrel we produce in Canada displaces a fascist barrel from Saudi Arabia, a misogynist barrel from Iran and a dictatorial barrel from Venezuela.”82

Levant also said that “if they [Liberals] believe global warming is an issue, then oilsands oil is superior to other sources of oil, such as California or Venezuela, which both have heavy oil that requires a lot of energy to refine.”83

In response to the book, David Suzuki described Levant as an apologist for the oil industry and argued that “the logic is faulty. Just because a country or society is considered ‘ethical’ does not mean everything it produces or exports is ethical.”84

In the Winnipeg Free Press, John Collins criticized some of Levant’s sources, noting the presence of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) in the footnotes.85

Patrick Brethour, writing in the Literary Review of Canada, said that Levant “fails to make the case for ethical oil” due to two of his key claims.

First, Levant claims that the environmental footprint of the tar sands is shrinking:

“In reality, the oil sands are more environmentally progressive and emit less waste than all sorts of other common industries in Canada and around the world. In just nineteen years, from 1990 to 2009, the intensity of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the oil sands has plummeted by 38 per cent.”

Second, he claims that the oil sands are less damaging than other kinds of oil:

“Alberta’s so-called carbon footprint is actually less of an issue than many other kinds of oil being produced around the world. Relative to other sources of petroleum, the oil sands look better and better all the time.”

Neither of these claims is entirely true, as the oil sands generate more carbon emissions than comparable sources of crude oil, and its emissions are expected to rise in the decades to come.86

An “Ethical Oil Echo Chamber” has developed since the book was published in 2010. It started with Sun Media which featured excerpts from Levant’s book which gave it national exposure.87

Then bloggers like Alykhan Velshi spread the message. Velshi also partnered with Levant in forming the Ethical Oil Institute and the Ethicaloil.org website. The concept then reached politicians like Stephen Harper.

The Ethical Oil campaign has become so pervasive that their advertisements have even appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s television network.

November 2010

Ezra Levant was ordered by a judge to pay $25,000 to Giacomo Vignal, a Canadian Human Rights Commission lawyer, for libeling him with “reckless indifference” to the truth in blog posts about a major hate speech case.88

September 2010

Levant wrote a column for Sun Media that strongly attacked George Soros’s character and alleged that as a child he collaborated with the Nazis.89

Soros threatened to sue Sun Media for libel, and on September 18 they issued a retraction and apology to Soros.

February 2006

Ezra Levant’s Western Standard published the Jyllands-Posten Muhammad cartoons depicting Muhammad.

The Alberta Human Rights and Citizenship Commission received complaints from the Islamic Supreme Council of Canada and from the Edmonton Council of Muslim Communities regarding the publication, and a hearing was scheduled for January, 2008.

On the day of the hearing, Levant republished the cartoons on his website.90

Both complaints were eventually dropped.91

Alberta Prosperity Project

Alberta Prosperity Project (APP)

Background

The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) describes itself as “a not-for-profit, non-partisan educational society, uniting all Albertans, businesses, and organizations to protect their prosperity, interests, freedoms, rights, and self-determination.1

“Our vision is for the prosperity, individual freedoms and rights of all Albertans to be protected by a new ‘Constitution of Alberta’ that recognizes the Supremacy of God* as foundational to Civil Society and the Rule of Law […],” APP notes on its about page.2

According to APP’s CEO Dennis Modry, speaking at an event hosted by Ezra Levant’s Rebel News, as of December 2022 the group had created 140 “educational chapters” throughout Alberta. He suggested the goal of APP was to “create the conditions for a citizens initiative to meet the threshold to force the government to hold a referendum on independence.” He concluded, “We have to do something because what’s happening to us with the WEF [World Economic Forum] U.N. agenda and the socialist Marxist vortex that we’re being sucked into has to be stopped.”3

“We can do two things. We can influence the outcome of the election, because we’re all aligned philosophically on what needs to happen. That’s number one. But number two, we have the clout now to force the Citizens Initiative Act, a referendum on Alberta independence. So that’s how the Alberta Prosperity Project can influence in the right direction the future for Alberta and maybe the rest of Canada,” Modry said in the Q&A.4

Modry is a former cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon whose open letter to Jason Kenney on the provincial response to COVID-19 was deemed to contain several “false or unproven” statements by health experts, according to an AFP fact check, and invoked an official response from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).5

APP member and frequent webcast host Chris Scott is the owner of the Whistle Stop Cafe, which has been described as “a centrepiece for defiance against COVID-19 public health measures” in Alberta.6

The APP’s first organized meeting was reportedly in Nisku, Alberta, on May 23, 2021 and included Doug Eliznga, Bob Blayone, Rodger Hodgkinson, Dennis Modry, Chris Scott, among others.7

Support from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith attended a leadership debate hosted by the Alberta Prosperity Project and Ezra Levant’s Rebel News in August 2022.

“So part of when I decided I wanted to run [for Alberta premier], I knew how important it was to make sure that we addressed the issues of autonomy,” Smith said at the event. “And I talked to Dr. Modry as one of my first steps. I said, ‘let’s try this together.’”8

In the debate, Smith suggested its members would have the ability to pressure the federal government through the APP’s membership towards a goal such as Alberta’s separation from Canada.

“This is why I take your movement very, very seriously,” she said at the debate. “And why Justin Trudeau should take it very, very seriously, too.”

Dennis Modry said he had spoken to Danielle Smith “on multiple occasions.”9

Stance on Climate Change

December 7, 2022

“There’s a series of conversations here. One of them is, is carbon dioxide a detriment to the planet or is it a benefit? That’s an entire conversation on its own. Then there’s this other conversation about what policies do we need to enact in order to deal with the answer to question number one? But question number one hasn’t even been answered yet,” APP member Chris Scott commented in a conversation with Robert Lyman, a regular contributor at Friends of Science.10

[…]

“These NGOs have come in and they have created this parade by doing protests, by misinformation, by using horribly flawed computer climate models. You name it. Ad campaigns, whatever. … They just pander to the wacko greenie environmentalists’ demands, no matter how outrageous they are,” Chris Scott added later in the interview.

“[…] Human flourishing should be the goal, not net zero. In my opinion.”

October 26, 2022

“Why is it that the conversation about Alberta oil is always a negative one and the conversation about the green scheme, or the green scam as I call it, that always is spun in a positive way? And what I’ve discovered is that if you look at who’s benefiting with either scenario. Alberta energy: Albertans benefit. We benefit greatly, and so does the rest of the country. With the green initiatives, the people that benefit are those who receive subsidies and grants, etc., from the government. Money from our pockets to shift into their pockets because they’re pushing a fairy tale ideology that can’t replace what they’re trying to vilify,” APP member Chris Scott suggested to Friends of Science’s Michelle Sterling during a webinar titled “My Tar Sands Tipping Point with CBC.”11

October 23, 2022

“All of us, at least a growing number of us, are starting to realize that this climate change agenda is a scam. It’s an absolute scam. It has no base in science. The science they used to perpetrate this on us is junk science,” APP member Chris Scott said in a conversation with APP CEO Dennis Modry.12

Modry responded:

“Yeah, there’s something very important here to understand. The narrative changed from global warming when it was evident that there was insignificant global warming. It wasn’t occurring. They shifted the narrative to climate change. Well, the climate has been changing for millennia. So the fact that they’re using that terminology should twig you to realize the invalidity of the argument.”

Modry went on to promote Alex Epstein, who would later speak at an APP event, as “an important ally for us as we fight against this false narrative about climate change”:

“He [Epstein] explains in very, very clear language, in a very simplistic way, to understand that this whole climate narrative in relation to fossil fuels is a false flag entirely and that CO2 actually is good. Here’s something just put this in your brain. CO2 levels right now are running at about 420 parts per million, which is the lowest they’ve been running for thousands and thousands and thousands of years. And plant life, animal life, human life, millennia, many millennia ago was thriving when CO2 levels were ten times what they are now. So it really is false to think that the fossil fossil fuels are causing climate change and global warming.”

October 17, 2022

“The products that are made from oil and gas and basically coal that would fire electrical generators and all that kind of stuff, with that technology, we’d be able to conquer whatever climate change happened to be. If we rose by a couple of degrees or we lowered by a couple of degrees, we’d be able to do something with that,” APP member Kerry Lambert commented in a webinar with Alex Epstein.13

September 29, 2022

“I was particularly alarmed by a statement by the World Economic Forum in a video in which the gentleman speaking, and I use the term gentleman loosely here, stated. ‘We need to eliminate billions of people. They will find peace in the grave.’ And so, again, I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but you’ve got to think about what’s coming. For example, let’s consider the COVID-19 mandates, and you’re aware of the problems that have occurred, the complications and the death rates that are occurring. Put this in the context of eliminating fossil fuel use, all in the name of climate change and what that’s going to do to the survivability of people in certain climates, whether it’s hot or cold. And think about what reducing and eliminating our use of fertilizer is going to do. Think about what’s coming with respect to the plan to eliminate or dramatically reduce the livestock industry. What does this sound like? Does it sound like a potential culling of the population? And I’m not saying it is. I’m just saying think about it and make your own decision about what is coming,” APP CEO Dennis Modry said at an event at Rocky Mountain House.14

September 15, 2022

“This idea that that we have to sacrifice the quality of human life in order to save the climate is nonsense, right? That is cruel and that’s wrong and it’s also unnatural,” APP director Tanner Hnidey commented during a video titled “Exposing King Charles.”15

August 18, 2022

Dennis Modry claimed in a webinar that Canada was already “carbon negative”:

“This federal government wants to gut our industry when we are producing a negligible amount of CO2, that all of it is picked up by our boreal forest as our carbon sink, our boreal forest, our agricultural lands, and our muskeg. And therefore, you know, we could probably be producing 10 to 20 times the amount of CO2 that we’re producing and still be carbon negative in this country. But this is not being recognized by this ridiculous federal government.16

Stance on the World Economic Forum (WEF) and “The Great Reset”

August 2022

“The Great Reset is a highly influential movement by the global elites of the World Economic Forum and the United Nations, who have signed a contract called Agenda 2030. And the purpose of that is to reset the global economy and to restructure the function of society, to control all of us, to control billions of people,” Dennis Modry said at an APP event.17

E&E News has described the Great Reset as “a conspiracy theory [that] holds that a global elite is planning to shut down society and restrict personal freedoms, such as eating meat and driving gas-powered cars in their zeal to address climate change.”18

“The Great Reset has been boosted by climate deniers, right-wing media and conservative think tanks that oppose regulations on fossil fuels,” E&E News‘s Scott Waldman added.

“It all began in June 2020 during the depths of COVID-19 lockdowns […] Before long it was turned into a rallying cry against COVID-19 lockdowns and, then, as a warning against climate action. Conservative activists used it to claim that environmental laws and regulations were an attack on their personal freedoms, said John Cook, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Climate Change Communication Research Hub at Monash University in Australia and an expert on climate disinformation.”

According to Waldman, Steve Milloy “was one of the first to push the Great Reset as a climate-related conspiracy theory” in the US.

July 27, 2022

“Many Albertans and people around the world are really very much concerned about the socialist Marxist agenda of the UN WEF contract agreement term Agenda 2030. And consequently, the APP cannot support any international institution that usurps or is planning to usurp a country’s sovereignty, or that will compromise energy and food security of any nations, or that will trample the inalienable freedoms and rights of individual citizens,” Dennis Modry said at an APP webinar discussing “UNDRIP and Alberta Independence.”19

Stance on Renewables

October 26, 2022

“So why is it that the conversation about Alberta oil is always a negative one and the conversation about the green scheme or the green scam, as I call it, that always is spun in a positive way? And what I’ve discovered is that if you look at who’s benefiting with either scenario, Alberta energy: Albertans benefit. We benefit greatly, and so does the rest of the country. With the green initiatives, the people that benefit are those who receive subsidies and grants, etc., from the government. Money, from our pockets to shift into their pockets, because they’re pushing a fairy tale ideology that can’t replace what they’re trying to vilify,” Chris Scott commented in a webinar titled “My Tar Sands Tipping Point with CBC.” 20

Alberta Prosperity Project’s Stance on UNDRIP

“APP absolutely does not support UNDRIP,” APP’s CEO Dennis Modry said during a webinar on July 27, 2022.21

“We don’t need a woke United Nations to ram down our throats their socialist, Marxist agenda,” Modry said during the webinar’s Q&A session, answering a question on concerns about “WEF Agenda 2030.”

What is UNDRIP?

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) is a comprehensive statement addressing the human rights of indigenous peoples. “The document emphasizes the rights of indigenous peoples to live in dignity, to maintain and strengthen their own institutions, cultures and traditions and to pursue their self-determined development, in keeping with their own needs and aspirations,” the United Nations wrote.22

Canada officially endorsed UNDRIP in 2016 and passed its federal version of UNDRIP, Bill C-15, in June 2021.23

Funding

In a discussion on a Grey Matter podcast, Modry claimed “as the CEO, and the commitments that I’ve made to some of the benefactors, we will never become a party and we will never back any given party.”24

The group offers a donation page25 as well as memberships starting at $20.

Dennis Modry — CEO

Dennis Modry, formerly a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon, sued Alberta Health Services “alleging they conspired to restrict and eventually suspend his operating privileges,” according to Global News/The Canadian Press in 2015.27

Modry’s profile at the Alberta Prosperity Project says that he retired on January 1, 2016, and that he worked on several provincial finance committees under Alberta Conservative Governments of Premiers Peter Lougheed, Don Getty, Ralph Klein, and Ed Stelmach.28 Modry has said he was the former vice president of policy and governance for the Wildrose Independence Party, and that Peter Downing, who started Wexit Alberta, was “a good friend of mine.”29

On March 31, 2021, the Western Standard published an open letter by Modry to Premier Jason Kenney on Kenney’s COVID-19 response.30 AFP Fact Check found that the letter contained false claims, and that “medical experts say several claims in the letter are false or unproven, and Modry is not currently licensed to practice, according to the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.”31

“The article suggested Dr. Modry is a currently practising physician; however, it’s important to note he is not licensed to practise medicine in Alberta. Dr. Modry’s specialization was in surgery, he does not have expertise in public health,” the CPSA wrote in a press release.32

In the article, Modry promoted the Great Barrington Declaration, a document sponsored by the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) that advocated for herd immunity as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The World Health Organization and other health experts have suggested a herd immunity strategy would be “unethical,” dangerous, and deadly. 33

Modry graduated from the University of Alberta (U of A) school of medicine in 1973, and eventually returned to the U of A in 1980 to develop a heart-long transplant program. He performed the first heart transplant in Western Canada in July 1985.34

He also set out to develop a luxury condominium project in downtown Edmonton, Alberta.35 He was formerly on the board of Imperial Equities Inc, a real estate development company based in Edmonton. 36

Rejean Lavoie

Rejean Lavoie’s profile at the Alberta Prosperity Project says he “has had a varied and successful career in large petro-chemical facilities (Dow and Dow joint venture Sadara)” as well as three “small private technology start-up ventures.”37

Walter Harris-Demelo
—VP Communications

“I’ve studied the globalists, their history and agenda, and know the threat they pose to our future and the future of our children,” Walter Harris-Demelo wrote in his profile at the Alberta Prosperity Project.38

“Since the beginning of the Covid Wars, Albertans have been labeled as ‘Non Essential’, and our way of life has been mandated against and criminalized. We are being conditioned to bow down to men in white lab coats who promise to ‘save us’ with science – the priest class of our time who promise ‘to make it rain’ in exchange for our freedoms. We are being conditioned to believe that humans are bad for the environment and that population control is necessary to save the planet – this is a lie. The global elites are working very hard to implement systems that can track, trace and database us. This claim used to be called a ‘conspiracy theory’ but history has proven that it is a conspiracy fact,” he added.

“A long time ago, I decided to “burn my ships” and dedicate myself to resisting this anti-human agenda, that they now call ‘The Great Reset.’ The path I’ve chosen has led me to meet and speak with some of the most interesting and informative people on Earth. Inevitably, my journey led me to Dr. Dennis Modry and the Alberta Prosperity Project, where I found a community who cared about preserving freedom, prosperity, and independence as much as I did. I want to share this community with all Albertans.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, he was an educational technologist with the Maskwacis Education Schools Commission until December 2021, and joined the Alberta Prosperity Project in February 2022.39

Jeff Rath

Listed as VP General Counsel to the Alberta Prosperity Project,40 Jeffrey R. W. Rath is a barrister and solicitor with Rath & Company.41 According to his profile, “Jeff Rath has used his vast amount of knowledge and experience to effectively advocate for the rights and interests of First Nations in Canada at all levels of court in Canada for over 20 years.”

Rath & Company runs a COVID-19 litigation website where they claim to represent “a number of groups of citizens of Alberta and Canada who are fighting for Medical Professionals, Alberta Public Service Employees, Businesspeople, Frontline Responders, and others who are suffering as a result of abusive Federal and Provincial COVID-19 related mandates.” The group is launching a class action lawsuit for “individuals who feel that they have been harmed by the Governments Response to COVID-19.” 42

In what appears to be the unedited version43 of an article by Rath later published in the Western Standard,44 he describes Rachel Notley, leader of the Opposition of Alberta, as “a reactionary, big pharma supporting, fascist in skirts who hypocritically cries crocodile tears over Danielle Smith suggesting that the discrimination against the unvaccinated was the worst discrimination she has seen in her lifetime.”

“Peer-reviewed ‘SCIENCE’ confirms that the so-called vaccines do not keep the ‘vaccinated’ from
spreading COVID at lower rates than the unvaccinated,” Rath wrote in the original version. “A Royal Commission needs to be empaneled sooner rather than later to examine all of the conduct
of every member of the medical establishment within AHS and the CPSA that were complicit in
the deaths of thousands of Albertans through their misguided avoidance of every known medical
ethic and safeguard.”45

Pam Lehr

Other APP Members

Chris Scott

Chris Scott, owner of the Whistle Stop Cafe, faced a total of 11 charges including nine related to the Public Health Act for keeping his business operating against public health guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.71

Scott said he joined the Alberta Prosperity Project after looking for solutions after he opened his restaurant against restrictions.

“I’ve been looking for solutions. Like a real solution, not just a temporary force-a-judge-to-throw-your-stuff-out-of-court solution, but a lasting solution that other people can apply to their lives and can literally make the world better for other people,” Scott said.

“[T]he minute we stand up as Albertans and we say, we’re not going to live like this, we’re not going to put up with cancel culture and wokeness and critical race theory and, and all of these ideologies that they twist the truth and celebrate lies. Albertans don’t want to do that.

“And that’s the reason why I speak and advocate for the Alberta Prosperity Project, because the solutions they’re offering, they’re plausible, they’re probable, they’re lawful, they’re peaceful, and nobody’s left behind. It’s not a left or a right thing. This is a freedom loving Albertans, or not.”72

Scott regularly hosts webinars and videos for the Alberta Prosperity Project, published on their YouTube channel and other social media platforms.

Scott has noted that he is on the board of WS Full Steam Ahead, a group he helped create “to advocate for people that have been affected by the [COVID-19] vaccine.”

“Vaccine death is probably a very… that’s strongly affected by the vaccine mandates. So what we did is we. We are not partnered, but we are cooperating and working with Leighton Gray, who has filed or is filing a class action lawsuit against Pfizer for vaccine injuries and vaccine deaths,” Scott said in a webinar with Dennis Modry.73

Actions

December 18, 2022

APP CEO Dennis Modry appeared at Ezra Levant‘s Rebel News live event in Calgary, Alberta “to discuss the significance of self-determination in governance, Alberta’s future, and more.” The video was posted to the video platform Rumble.74

The New York Times described Rumble as “the right-wing’s go-to video site75 and some have listed it among “alt-tech” social-media platforms.76

“We find ourself spiralling down into this vortex of progressive Marxism and socialism until eventually we will own nothing and we won’t be happy and we won’t have prosperity unless we come together and do something amazing. And that’s what the Alberta Prosperity Project is all about,” Modry said in his speech.

“If you can’t open and change the Constitution, what can you do? It’s all about leverage, folks. It’s the leverage that you can give the provincial government consequent to a successful referendum on Alberta independence.”

He added later:

“Did you think at one time that you owned your own body? You found out through COVID that you didn’t, right? This is the kind of federal government that we’re dealing with. […] We are facing the most profound elimination of the basic tenet of democracy: the loss of free speech, with Bill C-11.”

December 7, 2022

APP interviewed regular Friends of Science contributor Robert Lyman in a segment titled “What REALLY happened at COP27?77

“If we completely eliminate our emissions, it would make such small a difference to the global emissions level that you cannot measure it. Basically what I’m saying here is that these emissions reductions are not being done to change the climate or to change the temperature or to alter extreme weather events. This is pure virtue signaling, symbolic virtue signalling, and I mean, I hate to sort of put it in those stark terms, but that is exactly how I see it having studied this for a very long time,” Lyman claimed in the interview.

Chris Scott responded:

“I agree with you. And the prize that we get for this, this false virtue is catastrophic impacts to the lives and the prosperity of Canadians.”

He later added, “There’s a series of conversations here. One of them is, is carbon dioxide a detriment to the planet or is it a benefit? That’s an entire conversation on its own. Then there’s this other conversation about what policies do we need to enact in order to deal with the answer to question number one? But question number one hasn’t even been answered yet.”

According to Lyman, the oil and gas industry “been particularly targeted and victimized” in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “The mainstream media in Canada does not present a balanced and objective view of the advantages and disadvantages of climate policy,” Lyman claimed.

“The climate change realists or the climate change skeptics, whatever you want to call them, are a tiny minority, and they’re very poorly funded. So it’s very difficult to tell the story that you’re offering me an opportunity to tell you here today,” he later added.

“These NGOs have come in and they have created this parade by doing protests, by misinformation, by using horribly flawed computer climate models. You name it. Ad campaigns, whatever. …They just pander to the wacko greenie environmentalists’ demands, no matter how outrageous they are,” Chris Scott responded.

November 16, 2022

Kerry Lambert and Chris Scott interviewed78 Friends of Science‘s Communication Director 79 on mass graves found in Alberta. See some notable quotes below the video.

Michelle Sterling: [00:21:27] “I got into it because I’d done a number of historical documentaries and I met with a number of pioneers. I met with the last living RCMP officer, Northwest Mounted police officer, who first trekked west. So, you know, I just knew that it was wildly exaggerated. And and I guess the thing that is very important for us as Albertans and as Canadians is that this is really driving a wedge between groups within society. It’s creating hatred and resentment between groups. And some of that might still exist with the facts that I hope to show you tonight. But I don’t think it would be at the level of outrage. You know, there are many people who do have very real and painful, horrible experiences from residential schools. But the facts of the context of history also need to frame those experiences for all of us so that we understand what life was like back then. You know, it wasn’t a cakewalk.” [00:22:37]

Chris Scott: [00:24:52] “The narrative that’s been spun and presented en masse to Canada is that the people that were running the residential schools were so bad and they were so abusive to the people in these schools that they just would, you know, beat them to death and throw them outside and bury them and, you know, and not do anything about it. That’s that’s kind of the narrative that people are pushing. And because of it, all of the sudden, because I’m a white Christian of European descent, I’m responsible for a genocide of an entire people.” [00:25:28]

October 26, 2022

APP’s Chris Scott interviewed Michelle Sterling for a webinar titled “My Tar Sands Tipping Point with CBC.” Some notable quotes below.80

Chris Scott: [00:04:05] “So we have conversations with people like Michelle who are very knowledgeable on these subjects, and hopefully this will give you an idea, maybe some tools to use in your conversations with with other Albertans, as to how we can change the conversation from ‘Alberta is the embarrassing cousin of Canada’ to ‘Alberta is a global leader in clean, ethical energy. And we should be we should be rejoicing for it.'” [00:04:36]

Chris Scott: [00:13:43] “Every now and then we have something happen in energy or agriculture or whatever, and animals die or there’s something bad that happens. But if you put it in the context of how many people, how many people’s lives are enriched or able to prosper, how many lives are saved as a result of that industry where we had this incident happened, all of a sudden, the scales of what would you call it, the scales of. …” [00:14:06]

Michelle Sterling: (Completing Chris Scott’s statement)[00:14:09] “The balance of the importance changes.” [00:14:13]

Chris Scott: [00:14:14] “Yeah, like the scales of public perception, of public justice, they weigh very, very heavily on like in favor of the energy industry. So that’s something I’m hoping that we see more of in the in the upcoming months is that the information getting out there, like from folks like you who are are breaking down this narrative that everything Alberta does that has anything to do with oil or gas is evil, and the reality is what we do enriches the lives of every person on the globe in one way or another.” [00:14:50]

Michelle Sterling: [00:14:59] “Yeah, that’s part of it. And also the bigger picture is that Alberta has really been the poster child for the push for renewables and cap and trade worldwide. What could make renewables, which are very unreliable, very expensive, and really useless except for generating renewable energy certificates, what could make them look like a good deal, unless you compare them to something that looks ghastly and you call it dirty?” [00:15:28]

And of course, the mining, the surface mining of the oilsands was the perfect image to contrast that with renewable energy and say this oil is dirty, coal is dirty, gas is dirty, but this wind is clean. It’s beautiful. This solar panel is beautiful. These are clean and they’re free. There’s nobody ever says, hey, wait a minute, these guys are made from those guys so how can this be clean and beautiful and free if it’s made from oil, gas, and coal? But it was a perfect marketing scheme. [00:16:05]

Michelle Sterling: [00:25:50] “In Alberta, we have the perfect example of what climate change is. Go to the Royal Tyrrell Museum, go down to Okotoks and stand by that big rock. That big rock came all the way from Jasper, 400 kilometers. So where did all that ice go? Calgary used to be under two miles of ice. Where did it go? There were no SUVs. So, you know, we have the evidence actually right here in the province to argue against the catastrophe narrative. And, of course, again, that doesn’t mean that humans don’t affect climate. We do, but not catastrophically so. And our impact in terms of the atmospheric concentration is nominal.” [00:26:34][43.9]

Chris Scott: [00:27:01] “So a question comes to mind: what are we willing to sacrifice in the pursuit of what may or may not be largely human impact, and you know in order to change the climate by a margin, that is mostly insignificant. I think this whole thing needs to be relooked at.” [00:27:25]
