Sir Crispin Agnew inherited the title, first granted in the 1620s, from his father
The days of baronets and baronetesses would seem a thing of the distant past, far removed from Nova Scotia.
But one man in Edinburgh, Scotland, holds the title of the 11th Baronet of Nova Scotia, and he's not alone. Sir Crispin Agnew, 81, is one of at least 100 people who still hold the title, originally created as a money-making scheme to help fund the colonization of New Scotland.
Agnew is about to participate in an upcoming conference in Stirling, Scotland, that will mark the 400th anniversary of the first-ever Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1625.
"It's important from a family history point of view.… It's nice to have it, but in the modern day and age, it's really not of any particular benefit or anything other than a historical point of interest," Agnew told CBC's Information Morning Nova Scotia.
As a means to get more Scots to settle in New Scotland at the time, the King offered for purchase the hereditary title Baronet of Nova Scotia, with the proceeds from those sales used to cover immigration costs for settlers.
The payment of 3,000 Scottish merks, which would be the equivalent today of almost $66,000 Cdn, entitled the buyer the use of the title Sir before their given name and 6,500 hectares of land to settle in New Scotland, the land between New England and Newfoundland.
While it was intended to encourage colonization, Agnew said many were deterred because the title and land offering also came accompanied by a wealth tax.
"There was a lot of skulduggery that went on to encourage people to take up the titles," said Agnew.
He said King Charles I went to great and morally questionable lengths to force people to accept the title, including threatening to investigate murders and involve in the investigation people who refused to accept the title.
The end result was that only about 110 titles had been sold by the end of the reign of King Charles I.
Agnew's family, he said, received a letter that threatened to take away their most valuable source of income, a hereditary sheriffdom, if they didn't buy a title.
Since then, it has been passed down through generations.
"I inherited it from my father, he inherited it from his uncle," said Agnew.
Although there is little to no modern significance to being a baronet, he quipped being called Sir Crispin has a nice ring to it.
"After all, we did pay 166 pounds 13 and fourpence, so we might as well benefit from it."
Agnew owns a badge signifying that he is a Baronet of Nova Scotia. But he also acknowledges the title was used as a means to enforce widespread colonization of Indigenous people, including the Mi'kmaq in Nova Scotia.
That's something that will be discussed at the Nova Scotia and Scotland Conference in Stirling on June 30. Agnew said speakers from Indigenous communities will discuss the long-term impact of the granting of a charter for New Scotland to Sir William Alexander.
"It's something I think we modern baronets are really quite conscious of, even though we were … the original cause of it, although we were basically there to fund colonization. It was a way of raising money by the King without having to go to Parliament," said Agnew.
And while he holds the title of 11th Baronet of Nova Scotia, Agnew has yet to set foot in the province.
"I haven't and nor has any close member of my family, as far as I'm aware. It's perhaps on my bucket list," said Agnew.

Sir Crispin Hamlyn Agnew of Lochnaw, 11th Baronet QC (Born 1944)
Advocate, officer of arms, and former explorer. He is a Queen’s Counsel at the Scottish Bar and is also Chief of the Name and Arms of Agnew.
The Baronetcy that he claims dates back to 1629 in the Baronetage of England, and he is the eleventh baronet. His heraldic career began in 1978 when he was appointed Slains Pursuivant of Arms to the Chief of the Name and Arms of Hay, the Earl of Erroll, Lord High Constable of Scotland.
In 1981, he was appointed Unicorn Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary at the Court of the Lord Lyon in Edinburgh. In 1986, he was appointed Rothesay Herald of Arms in Ordinary and he currently holds this position.
He and his wife Susan, a journalist and broadcaster, have four children.

The Scottish diaspora consists of Scottish people who emigrated from Scotland and their descendants. The diaspora is concentrated in countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, England, New Zealand, Ireland and to a lesser extent Argentina, Chile, and Brazil. The Scottish diaspora has been estimated by the Scottish Government to be between 28 and 40 million people worldwide.[1] Other estimates have ranged as high as 80 million.[17]

Police Complaints Commissioner Appointed
Attorney General and Justice Minister Barbara Adams has appointed William (Bill) MacDonald as the Nova Scotia Police Complaints Commissioner for a three-year term effective immediately.
Mr. MacDonald replaces retired provincial court judge Patrick Curran.
“On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I want to thank Mr. Curran for his many years of service to the justice system,” said Minister Adams. “I also want to welcome Mr. MacDonald to this important role. The wealth of experience he has in relation to policing and justice will ensure that police agencies have appropriate oversight and Nova Scotians can have confidence that their voices will be heard.”
Mr. MacDonald previously served as police oversight consultant and investigator for the Nova Scotia Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner. He has also been a senior investigative analyst with the British Columbia Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner, and he was a lead investigator for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.
The Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner is responsible for investigating complaints by citizens alleging misconduct by municipal police officers. It also provides the administrative support needed by the Police Review Board to carry out its responsibilities.

Marjory Harper is a Visiting Professor at the UHI Centre for History. Her main research area is the Scottish diaspora. Her book on modern Scottish emigration, Scotland No More? The Scots who left Scotland in the twentieth century (2012) was in 2013 awarded the Frank Watson Prize by the University of Guelph, and short-listed for the Saltire History Prize. Her previous monograph, Adventurers and Exiles: The Great Scottish Exodus (2003), won the Saltire History Prize in 2004. She co-authored (with Professor Stephen Constantine) Migration and Empire (2010), a Companion Volume in the Oxford History of the British Empire. Westwater Advocates bids a remote farewell to stable stalwart Sir Crispin Agnew QC. Sir Crispin has enjoyed a splendid 38 year career at the bar having previously served in the army. Before the creation of the Westwater Stable Sheila was Crispin’s deputy clerk in the Robertson Stable. As Crispin transitions into retirement we wish him well and look forward to celebrating his retirement with him. When it safe to socialise we will gather and hopefully hear about some of this new adventures, which look set to include long distance sailing, cycling tours and plenty of family time. He is not giving up law however! He has been made an Honorary Research Fellow by the University of Dundee and will be writing academic articles in that capacity.

He is a great ambassador both for the Faculty and for the Stable with his phenomenal knowledge across many diverse subjects, his enthusiasm about the Stable and his encouragement of the more junior members.
