New Brunswick Business Council Names John Herron as Next President and Chief Executive Officer

November 14 2023

FREDERICTON, N.B., Nov. 15, 2023 – The New Brunswick Business Council (NBBC) is pleased to announce John Herron has been named its President and Chief Executive Officer, effective November 7, 2023.

“We are very excited to welcome John as our new President and CEO,” said Andrea Feunekes, Chair of the NBBC Board of Directors and CEO of Remsoft, a forestry software company. “John’s extensive experience working at the intersection of the public, private and non-profit sectors will be very valuable in helping us bring positive change to New Brunswick.”

The NBBC is a non-partisan group of leaders and CEOs committed to ensuring New Brunswick meets its full potential. It collaborates with business, government and community partners to find meaningful, fact-driven solutions to the province’s challenges.

“I am inspired by the eminent New Brunwickers who give their precious time, energy and ideas as members of this vital organization,” Herron said. “The private sector has a vital role in ensuring that New Brunswick's growth trajectory continues and that we optimize this unique moment to keep building our economy and strengthening our society.”

A passionate New Brunswicker, Herron’s experience spans regulatory and legislative affairs, public policy, business management, economic development, and investment attraction. He most recently served a 10-year term as a Board Member for the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board and is the Past President of the Atlantica Centre for Energy. From 1997-2004, he served as Fundy Royal’s Member of Parliament, providing national leadership in the environment, sustainable development, and post-secondary education.

“I am excited at the possibilities this role presents to catalyze partnership engagement and public policy development to better our province,” says Herron, who is a graduate of Acadia University (B.A. History) and St. Mary’s University (MBA).

About The New Brunswick Business Council

The New Brunswick Business Council (NBBC) consists of leaders and CEOs who each have a deep, personal stake in this province and its future. We adopt a forward-looking, positive perspective of what’s possible in New Brunswick and collaborate on real-world issues to find meaningful, fact-driven ways to solve them. We work hard to change the narrative in the province—and beyond. We pride ourselves on being a transparent, non-partisan group and believe in a better New Brunswick.

Recent NBBC initiatives include:

  • Spearheading the creation of the Housing Hub of New Brunswick (HHNB), a new organization backed by $1.6 million in provincial and federal funding to accelerate the construction of affordable housing to attract workers to rural communities.
  • Providing a powerful voice in a coalition of 200-plus leading Atlantic businesses and organizations advancing the Atlantic Investment Incentive Pilot project to drive innovation and R&D, a topic we are actively pursuing with the New Brunswick government, providing direction on a new strategy.
  • Initiating a net-zero competitiveness roundtable with thought leaders that we hope will lead to the creation of an Innovation Lab at UNB to green N.B. SMEs and supply chains. We are excited to see the concrete solutions that will emerge to help businesses make the transition.

Current Council Priorities: Seizing New Brunswick’s Fast Growing Opportunities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Brunswick Business Council Names Monica Gaudet-Justason as President and Chief Executive Officer, Denis Caron as its next Chair.

FREDERICTON, N.B., July 11 2024 – The New Brunswick Business Council (NBBC) is pleased to announce that Monica Gaudet-Justason has been named its President and Chief Executive Officer. Ms. Gaudet-Justason will assume her new role on a full-time basis effective September 1, 2024.

Andrea Feunekes, Chair of the NBBC Board of Directors and CEO of Remsoft, a forestry software company, stated: “The Council is thrilled that Monica has accepted to lead the Council’s next Chapter. Monica is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in business transformation, strategy, stakeholder relations, and organizational change management. She is fluent in English and French and has built a distinguished career marked by leadership roles in consulting, economic development, business transformation and stakeholder engagement. Monica's most recently served as Vice-President of Transformation at Mariner Innovations.

The Council is also pleased to announce that Denis Caron, CEO of the Port of Belledune, will assume the role of Chair of the Council - also effective September 1, 2024, upon the end of Ms. Feunekes’ two-year term.

Mr. Caron brings a wealth of executive leadership to the role, having previously served as a leading Deputy Minister for economic development. Mr. Caron’s extensive knowledge of the opportunities and challenges of all regions of the province will provide the council with a unique perspective on the Council’s mission.

The NBBC is a non-partisan group of leaders and CEOs committed to ensuring New Brunswick meets its full potential. It collaborates with business, government and community partners to find meaningful, fact-driven solutions to the province’s challenges.

“I am looking forward to continuing the invaluable work of the New Brunswick Business Council. I can already attest that Council members care passionately about the social and economic progress of New Brunswick. It is why the Council exists, to affect change by bringing people together to meet our collective challenges and help seize opportunities to better the lives of New Brunswickers,” stated Ms. Gaudet-Justason.

Incoming Chair, Mr. Caron added:

“We are looking forward to workings with Monica, who will play a vital leadership role in advancing the narrative of the recently released Campbell’s Report, Growing the export economy: Key to New Brunswick’s future prosperity (NBBC Campbell Report). As we emphasized last month, the NBBC is concerned by the state of the provincial economy. Recent economic growth has been lackluster and private sector investment is insufficient to foster growth. The report is intended to initiate discussions around its findings and create a dialogue on how industry and government and agencies can collaboratively focus on GDP growth in the province. The conversation is just beginning

New Brunswick Business Council set to release Report on the decline of the New Brunswick Export and Manufacturing Sector

The New Brunswick Business Council (NBBC) is concerned by the state of the provincial economy. Economic growth has been lackluster in recent years and private sector investment is insufficient to foster growth.

In February the NBBC commissioned David Campbell of Jupia Consulting to perform an analysis of the province’s export and manufacturing sectors, its historical impact and its declined position in today’s economy. TheNBBC’s Campbell Report is a call to action for government and the private sector that business investment is vitally needed to improve productivity in our export and manufacturing sectors.

“The Council is troubled by the ongoing absence of discussion on economic issues within the public discourse, which, in part, caused the Council to engage Jupia Consulting to undertake this work,” stated Denis Caron, CEO of the Port of Belledune and next Chair of the NBBC .

On Thursday, David Campbell will present the findings of the NBBC’s Campbell Report before the province’s nine leading business and economic development agencies.

These include:

  • The Conseil économique du Nouveau-Brunswick.
  • The province’s leading chambers: Saint John Region Chamber of Commerce, the Fredericton Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton.
  • The leading economic development agencies: Envision Saint John: The Regional Growth Agency, Ignite Fredericton, Economic Development: Southeast Regional Service Commission
  • Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters.

The NBBC Campbell Report provides key data points on the state of the NB Economy as well as a number of key recommendations. The Report’s findings conclude that significant capital expenditures (capex) in equipment, robotics, and digitization is required for New Brunswick to return to a competitive position that addresses the province’s deficit in trade.

The fact that the province’s nine leading business and economic development groups are united behind the messages found in the NBBC David Campbell Report, is a strong signal that our economy has underlying challenges. These challenges are masked by the growth in population and the accompanying Federal transfers from equalization that are allocated on a per capita basis, meanwhile, private sector growth is lacking,” stated Blair Hyslop, Co-CEO of Mrs. Dunsters.

David Campbell will present the findings of the NBBC Campbell Report at 10:30 am at Malley Industries, 1100 Aviation Avenue, Dieppe NB. The full Report will be available at that time.

Mariner Appoints Nancy Butler to Champion Client Success and Innovation in New Brunswick

Aug 27, 2025 | Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Longtime Mariner executive and community leader to drive meaningful outcomes in healthcare, AI, data, and public sector transformation.

Saint John, N.B. – August 27, 2025 – Mariner, a leader in technology consulting and solutions, is proud to announce that longtime executive Nancy Butler will now lead the company’s strategic growth and client engagement across New Brunswick—reinforcing its strong focus on the province and its future.

A New Brunswick resident with almost 20 years at Mariner, Nancy brings exceptional experience, trusted leadership, and deep local insight to this role. Her appointment reflects Mariner’s enduring belief in the power of regional leadership, placing responsibility in the hands of someone who not only understands the business landscape but also lives and works in the province and contributes meaningfully to its communities.

“Though I’m originally from Newfoundland, New Brunswick is where I’ve grown deep roots and built lasting relationships,” said Butler. “I care deeply about the people and organizations here, and I’m passionate about helping them solve tough problems with practical, people-first innovation. We’re not just offering consulting – we’re building trust, co-creating solutions, and having fun while doing it.”

Nancy’s career at Mariner spans roles such as Vice President of Operations & Delivery, and Vice President of R&D and Product Management with Mariner’s Product line of business. A problem-solver at heart, with a natural curiosity and a strong grasp of technology, she has guided teams, transformed operations, and delivered critical solutions across telecom, utilities, and government sectors.

In this role, Nancy will work closely with clients and partners across New Brunswick, particularly in healthcare and the public sector, to navigate complex transformation initiatives. She will support organizations embracing change by helping them harness the power of data, adopt AI responsibly, strengthen their cybersecurity posture, and manage change effectively. Her approach is rooted in empathy, business insight, and a deep commitment to driving outcomes that matter.

“Nancy represents the best of Mariner,” said Paul Eisner, President of Mariner Innovations. “She brings hands-on experience, strategic insight, and a genuine connection to the region. Her expanded leadership strengthens our presence in New Brunswick and enhances our ability to deliver meaningful outcomes for clients across the province.”

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Nancy is a dedicated community member. Coaching is something Nancy has done through her role at Mariner but also with local basketball communities. For a number of years, she has been a volunteer, coach, and major supporter of her kids as they grew up on the fields and courts of New Brunswick. She sees the ongoing benefits of putting in the effort with her community inside and outside of the “day” job.

Inside of Mariner, Nancy was also key to leading the ongoing participation in university and college work term programs. Seeing the new grads choose Mariner, getting to watch them grow through the years inside of an organization, and build families of their own in their hometown has been extremely meaningful.

Her recent appointment to the TechImpact board further highlights her role in advancing digital progress across Atlantic Canada.

Nancy looks forward to working with organizations across the province to tackle challenges, seize opportunities, and help shape a more connected, resilient, and innovative New Brunswick.
