Methinks now that the second debate is history I bet Ches Crosbie and his buddy Dwight Ball are greatly relieved that Alison Coffin and her noticeably absent pal Graydon Pelley ignored my emails and phone calls N'esy Pas?

This debate made me wish a tidal wave or undersea earthquake would wipe St John's off the map. What a wonderful place NL could be without the influence of the St. John's merchant princes and their lackeys

David R. Amos
Reply to @Im Sorry: Methinks you need to relax and enjoy the circus then vote against the princes and their lackeys N'esy Pas?

I couldn't watch past the opening remarks. Somebody learn a few lines and ad lib or CBC please get them a teleprompter. All three gave terrible performances to the tv audience. Maybe next debate should be on radio?

David R. Amos
Reply to @Chris Healy: I enjoyed it for obvious reasons

Edward Hyde
This debate suffered from not having representation from VOCM and not being long enough. With so many former reporters going into Government Communications positions, one wonders how many punches are pulled by the NL media, out of fear of losing out on cushy Government positions.

Bill .Parsons
Reply to @Edward Hyde: True, so true.. Typical Director of Communications salary is $103,000 (after a few years) plus a lot of benefits.. Just play nice and you are in the candidate pool. Otherwise, it is a case of slaving away at much lower pay with NTV, CBC or VOCM.

David R. Amos
Reply to @Bill .Parsons: YUP Methinks thats how the wicked game is played by all the questionable media people worldwide not just on the Rock N'esy Pas?

Bill .Parsons
Consider the following: (1) we have a $7.7 billion budget; (2) Health (38.9%), interest payments (18.6%) and welfare (2.9%) account for $4.7 billion or (60.4%) of the budget; (2) Crosbie has committed to no health cuts with the possibility of wage increases for doctors while Ball has made no mention of any cuts; and (3) you can't cut interest payments or welfare.

If Government is going to eliminate a billion deficit, he will have to cut from the remaining $3.0 billion (39.6%) of the budget. They will have to cut about a third of everything else, meaning K-12 education, post-secondary education, roads, etc, etc. Do you really think that is realistic for any government that is afraid to cut much of anything?

If elected, Crosbie has committed to an additional $300 million in spending, essentially all the money and more the feds promised in the Atlantic Accord.

No one is talking about any wage increases in the public sector, except for doctors.

No one is talking about inevitable increases in welfare payments.

No one is talking about inevitable increases in health spending.

The NDP does not have a plan yet but will commit to even more spending.

Don't buy into the lie that anyone is going to balance the budget, unless you like the lie. I am willing to bet the public does not care and likes the lie. I will not vote for these people. Do not vote for these people - PC, Liberal or NDP. I will not vote for a lie. I'm leaving before this whole mess collapses.

Reply to @Bill .Parsons: "I'm leaving before this whole mess collapses."

Brutal debate and I wish whoever was chairing it would have stepped in to allow answers. Ball sounded like a school Bully at times. None of the candidates looked good or inspiring to me.

Methinks many would agree those were the fun parts to watch N'esy Pas?

Michael Rokkman
If there was any doubt before the debates about our collective future, they should be well put away now. As we all feared, this group of politicians is without ideas, without anything that even resembles a plan, without vision, and ultimately, without hope. The leaders of the two major parties are interested in nothing but gaining power -- for themselves and for their respective parties. That's about it. Once in power, then whatever side wins gets the spoils. The province and its citizens? Good luck to you all. That's about all that can be said.
So who to vote for? I think the Telegram got it right. Ball deserves to loose, and Crosby doesn't deserve to win. If it were just between those two, I'd say deserving to loose takes priority over not deserving to win. Ball earned the loss, so should get his just desserts. But Crosby has not earned anyone's vote, and I think even his supporters realize that. So it seems to me there are four realistic possibilities: 1) vote for the NDP, 2) vote for NLAlliance, 3) spoil your ballot, or 4) do not vote at all. None of these seem particularly attractive, but this is what it's come to in Newfoundland and Labrador these days. The two major parties have to get the message that they are unacceptable and I don't think they'll get that message if we continue to vote for them. If we continue to vote for them, they'll think that the people are happy with the way they're running the show. But we're not, and they're doing a particularly bad job, and they need to know about it.

Brad Pittman
Reply to @Michael Rokkman: Ches Crosbie could barely get a throught out without looking at his scripted notes. He came across a lost with no backbone. At least Ball was good at arguing back, not that I like either one of them. Ms. Coffin seemed to know what she was talking about. It's amazing to me [people like Crosbie. He may look like Mr. Burns but Mr Burns has more character.

Chris Healy
Reply to @Michael Rokkman: Maybe we should just shut'er down again for a few years. Can we have a write-in candidate submission for a return to commission of government?

David R. Amos
Reply to @Brad Pittman: "Ms. Coffin seemed to know what she was talking about."

Methinks all the politicians know that what Coffin opted NOT to talk about that irked me N'esy Pas?

Reply to @Kony Tornheiser: "Best case scenario right now is a minority government'

Bill .Parsons
The government we elect will be a reflection of the public, simply because the Liberals and Conservatives have adopted the same platform, more or less. The platforms announce huge gifts (e.g. busing for all kids, cheap childcare), no spending cuts, eliminating taxes and minimal power increases. The cost is hundreds of millions of dollars on top of a billion dollar deficit. Yet government will balance the budget in a few years, primarily through wishful thinking on oil prices, and economic growth, as well as voodoo economics.

In voting either PC or Liberal we are buying into the lie. I am not going to vote at all.

Good luck residents of Newfoundland and Labrador. You are the real problem because you cannot accept reality, choose to stick your head in the sand, or simply want to be on the government side to line your pockets while the getting is good. You buy into the lies that are in your favour.

It will end badly.

Newfoundland and Labrador went bankrupt in 1933 and will do so again. All that is missing is national/global downturn which is overdue.

David R. Amos

Reply to @Bill .Parsons: "In voting either PC or Liberal we are buying into the lie. I am not going to vote at all."

What about the Independents? If there is one on your ballot why give them the nod? I advise that everybody vote and vote for anyone the wish except one person. That person is the incumbent. If all the folks who don't bother to vote did vote and did that then there would be new players filling the seats instead of the same old crews. Maybe a few of them would be ethical. Methinks if nothing else at least you would see a change in the circus N'esy Pas?

Doug Carter
I am sure many of us are fed up with politicians (all parties) and how they govern. We need to send them a message ....... and to me the only way to do that is to not let any party govern for more than 1 term; they get too comfortable, arrogant and corrupt. I have always voted for the Liberals, but no more. Would the PC's really do anything different! I will continue to vote for an opposition party until I see REAL CHANGE. Imagine, if for the next number of elections parties were not guaranteed.to win a second term, would they SMARTIN UP; would they begin to make real change. For me now, without a major overhaul of government / elections, etc., I can only hope for a coalition govt.

Don Rose
No one opposes Dwight Ball as much as I do, but he clearly won the debate last night. He had his talking points in order and defended his positions well. I wish he governed with that much vigor.

Ches was detached and seemingly unable to recall the question at most times as his answers veered dramatically from start to finish and he retreated quickly when debates began to heat up. I imagine he had to be poked from time to time in between just to keep the heart rate going. The PCs should be in prime position to win this election, but their leadership choice along with their high price tag social expansion platform will probably dampen those aspirations. Ches spent more time appealing to NDP voters than galvanizing his base, an approach that will probably lose more votes than gain.

Allison Coffin is intense to say the least. She's bright and passionate, but it was obvious she (like her party) was unprepared. She played the role of antagonist as she picked and poked at responses rather than thoughtful debate. Perhaps she will be more effective in such forums after a few rounds in the House...if she gets there.

Brad Pittman
Reply to @Don Rose: That was a good summary, whether people like it or not.

Jackie Barrett
I missed the debate, but watched the repeat.

However, I found Ches Crosbie and the Progressive Conservatives to be rude along with the constant tendency to interrupt.

He didn't even give Dwight Ball and the Liberals an opportunity to finish his answers with his constant interruptions. Even the moderators were just as guilty for not flagging Ches Crosbie for debate violations.

If Ches Crosbie wants to be a true leader of Newfoundland and Labrador, he has to learn to open his ears as opposed to his mouth, show some manners, and stop interrupting.

As a loyal NDP supporter, I was especially disappointed with Allison Coffin's performance as she was just as bad as Ches Crosbie, including constantly interrupting Dwight Ball.

Coffin and Crosbie's actions definitely proved that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians in leadership positions suffer from a "my way or no way" attitude, along with some lack of manners.

Shame on both Allison Coffin and Ches Crosbie for being rude.

Doug Chafe
Reply to @Jackie Barrett:
Surely you must have made a typo and are referring to Ball being the interrupter.

David R. Amos
Reply to @george bayley: Yes

David R. Amos
Reply to @Doug Chafe: Methinks desperate liberals post desperate things but there was no need Ball has it in the bag anyway N'esy Pas?

Terry Clark
The debate was hard to watch. Personal b/t Ball and Crosbie and Coffin is very green at public speaking. Seems PC and NDP closely aligned on issues but both really don't have any plans in place for most issues. Ball is the only one with experience and a firm grasp on most issues. It's a default vote for me, I don't want an inexperienced or naive captain at the helm if the ship is in danger of sinking.

Terry Clark
Reply to @John Smith: I'm not saying Ball is a great politician by any stretch either, only that he's the only one with ANY experience. I think this us truly a lesser of three evils situation. I'm sure I'll be holding my nose as I cast my ballot as I think many of us will.

David R. Amos
Reply to @Terry Clark: "I think this us truly a lesser of three evils situation. I'm sure I'll be holding my nose as I cast my ballot as I think many of us will."

At least you are honest but why not vote for the best person who speaks for you in your neigbourhood and let the overall political cards fall where they may?

Brad Pittman
For anyone considering voting PC, Ches does not understand the issues or solutions if he had to continue to read his scripted answers / talking points. Everytime he paused, he had to glance down at his notes to continue his talking points. Ball and even Collins didn't do much of that.

David R. Amos
Reply to @Brad Pittman: Methinks the smartest one of the bunch was Coffin but all the politicians reading this know why I would not trust her as far as I can throw her for obvious reasons N'esy Pas?

Angus Campbell
"Was it a mistake, Mr. Crosbie?""
This just goes to show the arrogance of the PC party. Crosbie has never admitted what a colossal waste of money the Boondoggle was.

Yes Ches it was a mistake. Muskrat Falls has bankrupted us while Churchill Falls at least paid for it self.

Angus Campbell
Reply to @Gerald Niven:
The liberals had four years to clean up the mess the PC's left this province in and it will take another four years to finish the job

During debate, Crosbie makes allegations of political firing by Liberals
CBC News · Posted: May 01, 2019 6:30 AM NT

Political firing?

During an answer around equality, Crosbie named two women on his team
— his sister, Beth Crosbie, who's running in Virginia
Waters-Pleasantville, and his chief of staff, Denise Tubrett.

Tubrett was the deputy assistant minister of regional services under
the Department of Health and Community Services.

Crosbie told the crowd Ball "had her fired because her father-in-law
is a PC senator."

A government bio online says Tubrett spent more than 20 years in the
public service.

It certainly wasn't because of any family connection that she
would have had.
    - Dwight Ball

Tubrett confirmed by phone Tuesday evening that she was let go from
her position, without cause, in December 2017 — two years into Ball's
mandate.

Tubrett feels her termination was "definitely" due to her connection
to Senator Norman Doyle.

Other than saying "I did not know that" immediately after Crosbie's
accusation, Ball didn't elaborate on it during the debate.

He told reporters afterwards that he doesn't know who Tubrett's
father-in-law is and that any political leanings would have had
"nothing to do with the decision that was made."

The only possible reason for her firing would be political
    - Ches Crosbie

"I don't know the details," he said. "But it certainly wasn't because
of any family connection that she would have had."

Crosbie didn't provide any evidence to back up his claim around
Tubrett's dismissal.

He said she "had a sterling reputation in government" and "the only
possible reason for her firing would be political."

"There was nothing else," he said. "You can ask people in the health
department if you want."

The NDP, PC and Liberal leaders will face off again Wednesday from 7-8
p.m. NT for the televised debate, after CBC's Here and Now.

William "Bill" Matthews (born July 22, 1947 in Grand Bank,
Newfoundland) is a Canadian politician.

Matthews was a Progressive Conservative member of the Newfoundland and
Labrador House of Assembly from 1982 to 1996. During this time, he was
a cabinet minister, as Minister of Culture, Recreation and Youth from
1985 to 1988 and Minister of Career Development and Advanced Studies
from 1988 to 1989.

Matthews was later elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1997
as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada,
representing the riding of Burin—St. George's. He crossed the floor to
the Liberals in 1999, and continued to represent the riding until
2004. In that year's federal election, he was elected to the newly
redistributed district of Random—Burin—St. George's, which he
represented until 2008.

Matthews is a former teacher. He is a former Parliamentary Secretary
to the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and Minister of
Intergovernmental Affairs, Deputy House Leader of the Progressive
Conservative Party, and Progressive Conservative critic of Fisheries
and Oceans.

After 10 years in the House of Commons, Matthews called Prime Minister
Harper a "liar",[1] and was not permitted by Speaker of the House
Peter Milliken to rise in the House for the final 14 months of his
political career.[2] Matthews did not run for reelection in the 2008
election.

In October 2018, Matthews was appointed as Chief of Staff to
provincial PC leader Ches Crosbie in the Opposition Office.[3]

Matthews is contesting the 2019 provincial election as the PC
candidate in Burin-Grand Bank.

>>>>
>>>> By Erin Hatfield
>>>>
>>>> "If you don't like what you got, why don't you change it? If your
>>>> world is all screwed up, rearrange it."
>>>>
>>>> The 1979 Trooper song Raise a Little Hell blared on the speakers at
>>>> the 8th Hussars Sports Center Friday evening as people filed in to
>>>> watch the Fundy candidates debate the issues. It was an accurate, if
>>>> unofficial, theme song for the debate.
>>>>
>>>> The crowd of over 200 spectators was dwarfed by the huge arena, but as
>>>> they chose their seats, it was clear the battle lines were drawn.
>>>> Supporters of Conservative candidate Rob Moore naturally took the blue
>>>> chairs on the right of the rink floor while John Herron's Liberalswent
>>>> left. There were splashes of orange, supporters of NDP Pat Hanratty,
>>>> mixed throughout. Perhaps the loudest applause came from a row towards
>>>> the back, where supporters of independent candidate David Amos sat.
>>>>
>>>> The debate was moderated by Leo Melanson of CJCW Radio and was
>>>> organized by the Sussex Valley Jaycees. Candidates wereasked a barrage
>>>> of questions bypanelists Gisele McKnight of the Kings County Record
>>>> and Lisa Spencer of CJCW.
>>>>
>>>> Staying true to party platforms for the most part, candidates
>>>> responded to questions about the gun registry, same sex marriage, the
>>>> exodus of young people from the Maritimes and regulated gas prices.
>>>> Herron and Moore were clear competitors, constantly challenging each
>>>> other on their answers and criticizing eachothers' party leaders.
>>>> Hanratty flew under the radar, giving short, concise responses to the
>>>> questions while Amos provided some food for thought and a bit of comic
>>>> relief with quirky answers. "I was raised with a gun," Amos said in
>>>> response to the question of thenational gun registry. "Nobody's
>>>> getting mine and I'm not paying 10 cents for it."
>>>>
>>>> Herron, a Progressive Conservative MP turned Liberal, veered from his
>>>> party'splatform with regard to gun control. "It was ill advised but

>>>> on, I'm voting against it." Pat Hanratty agreed there were better
>>>> places for the gun registry dollars to be spent.Recreational hunters
>>>> shouldn't have been penalized by this gun registry," he said.
>>>>
>>>> The gun registry issues provoked the tempers of Herron and Moore. At
>>>> one point Herron got out of his seat and threw a piece of paper in
>>>> front of Moore. "Read that," Herron said to Moore, referring to the
>>>> voting record of Conservative Party leader Steven Harper. According to
>>>> Herron, Harper voted in favour of the registry on the first and second

>>>> final count," Moore said. "We needa government with courage to
>>>> register sex offenders rather than register the property of law
>>>> abiding citizens."
>>>>
>>>> The crowd was vocal throughout the evening, with white haired men and
>>>> women heckling from the Conservative side. "Shut up John," one woman
>>>> yelled. "How can you talk about selling out?" a man yelled whenHerron
>>>> spoke about his fear that the Conservatives are selling farmers out.

>>>>
>>>> As the crowd made its way out of the building following the debate,

Power plays, health spending and jobs: Where the party leaders clashed in the televised debate

Health care, Muskrat Falls take top billing

The leaders of Newfoundland and Labrador's Liberal and Progressive Conservative parties asked each other to atone for massive hydroelectric projects on the Churchill River during a heated exchange in the televised leaders debate Wednesday night.

"Why don't you apologize for what Smallwood did about the Upper Churchill contract?" asked PC Leader Ches Crosbie, against shouts from Liberal Leader Dwight Ball, referring to a long-running contract that will not expire until 2041.

"Are you proud of what your party did to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, sir?" Ball retorted, after discussing the Muskrat Falls megaproject's impact on the provincial debt.

"Was it a mistake, Mr. Crosbie?"

NDP Leader Alison Coffin — who fired darts of her own against the other leaders — joined Ball and Crosbie for a televised debate produced from CBC's studios in St. John's.

Pitching their platforms to voters ahead of the May 16 election, the leaders of the province's three main parties debated job creation, health care, electricity rates and domestic violence during the hour-long telecast, in which they fielded questions from reporters.

Health care

The first fireworks of the night came early, when Ball and Crosbie faced off on a question about health care.

The Liberal leader pressed Crosbie on comments he made to media in April, where he suggested the creation of a quasi-judicial board to oversee health care spending. He said at the time that there was "waste in health care."
"That's a good place to start while preserving the quality of care you can root out a lot of waste," he told reporters at the time. He's since told reporters that he would maintain the current levels of health care spending, but would change how money is spent.

Ball attacked Crosbie on the debate floor, continually asking him whether or not he said he would cut health care spending.

"Do you remember those words?…You're saying you never said starting with health care, that's a good place to start?" Ball asked. "You said that last week Mr. Crosbie, it is recorded."

Crosbie said the government has had four years to improve the health care system, but — according to Crosbie — it's still the most expensive in the country, and delivers the worst outcomes.

"Show where you have improved health care in this province in the last four years," Crosbie said.
You can watch the entire televised leaders debate in the video player below.

Muskrat Falls

When answering a question about his rate mitigation plan, Ball said it was a "shame" the provincial government money had to be spent on the task.

"The Muskrat Falls project has put quite the burden on Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and Mr. Crosbie tonight still will not say that that project was a mistake," Ball said.

Crosbie accused Ball of supporting the project, referencing old statements in the House of Assembly and Twitter posts. Ball answered that he could support "the principles" but not the "cost and mismanagement," which Ball blamed on the Tories.
Leaders squared off on the project a second time later in the debate, when a question on climate change turned into a debate about rate mitigation and the Muskrat Falls project.

"You're having us believe that you cannot read and you cannot hear," Crosbie said, accusing Ball of "twisting the truth" on the PC party's rate mitigation plan.

Ball answered that he could read and hear what was being said at the judicial inquiry into the Muskrat Falls project.

Job creation

Ball and Coffin faced off over a question about retention of young people and recent high-school graduates.

After Coffin said her party wants to see tuition eliminated at Memorial University, Ball touted the province's increase in employment over the past year.

According to Statistics Canada, 7,000 more people worked in Newfoundland and Labrador in March 2019 than March 2018.

"What kind of jobs?" asked Coffin. "Are they going to domestic people? Are they minimum wage jobs? Do they have pensions?"

"Ms. Coffin, you really don't want to hear the good news," Ball replied.
Coffin then attacked the Liberal government's decision to fund a call centre company's move to St. John's, implying those jobs are not high quality.

Their pitch to you

Each party leader was offered an opening and closing statement to make their pitch, uninterrupted, to voters.

Crosbie used his opening statement to echo a famous debate line from U.S. president Ronald Reagan.
"You just filed your taxes. Are you better off today than you were four years ago?" he asked.

"You just filled your gas tank, are you better off? You just paid your insurance premium, are you better off?"
The PC leader said he would make jobs and hope his first priority. He said under the Liberal watch, Newfoundland and Labrador lost thousands of jobs — and argued that he was a "new broom, a new leader, and new management" for the PC party.

PC Leader Ches Crosbie said on multiple occasions that he would bring a strong voice to the federal government, and fight for more in transfer payments and equalization. (Katie Breen/CBC)
In his closing statement, Liberal Leader Dwight Ball answered Crosbie's questions — at least, one version of them.

"Mr. Crosbie tends to ask if our province is better off today than it was four years ago, the simple answer to that is yes," he said. "Mr. Crosbie and his PC friends left our province in turmoil …provincial finances in disarray."

Dwight Ball said the Liberal Party's plan — titled the Way Forward — was the best plan for the province.

NDP Leader Alison Coffin said the debate proved her party was "different."

"I have been an economist in this province for 25 years. I have seen the collapse of our fisheries, I have seen the devastating effects of downturns in oil prices. I have seen missed opportunities and poor choices made by previous governments. Liberal and Tory governments have saddled us with enormous debt," she said.

"It does not have to be this way. I know that an economy can work for all of us."

Here's what happened at the province's 1st election debate for 2019 campaign

During debate, Crosbie makes allegations of political firing by Liberals

All four leaders took part in the debate Tuesday.

All four party leaders squared off Tuesday night for the first political debate of the 2019 election season, but two focused in on each other.

Many of the answers given by PC Leader Ches Crosbie and Liberal Leader Dwight Ball circled back to what they felt the other party was doing wrong.

"We gave Mr. Ball a chance. He wasted the last four years," Crosbie said in his opening remarks.
In response, Ball's opening hit on "some of the contrasts" between himself and Crosbie, naming positions on collective bargaining agreements and health care costs as two.

The Q&A forum was hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Labour in St. John's.

Questions covered areas like privatization, equality, the green economy, education and retention.

"As I was sitting and observing and listening to everybody, I thought, you know, this is the very reason that NL Alliance was formed," Alliance leader, Graydon Pelley said.

NL Alliance

"For 70 years we've been listening to the mainstream parties go back and forth," Pelley continued. "And questions that were asked tonight that were very important about education, health care, they just — these two leaders went after each other about Muskrat Falls and things. And I need not say any more, this is why we need change in Newfoundland and Labrador."

NL Alliance Leader Graydon Pelley says his party's approach is to talk to people and base decisions on that. (Katie Breen/CBC)
During the debate, Pelley said conversations with people in the "real world" are key to his collaborative approach.

He wouldn't say yes or no to privatization — repeating that decisions would be based on talks with stakeholders — but he did say efficiencies in healthcare would come from the top, not front-line workers.

NDP

NDP leader Alison Coffin called the Ball and Crosbie back-and-forth "totally unnecessary."

Coffin says the NDP's election platform should be out next week. (Katie Breen/CBC)

Her party hasn't released its platform yet — it's expected in sometime next week — but in the debate, Coffin said the party would hire more healthcare workers instead of paying out as much overtime, raise the minimum wage and ensure more women were brought into government agencies, boards and commissions.
Coffin also said the NDP would introduce binding arbitration that would force multinational companies back to the bargaining table during a lockout.

Liberals

Amid jabs at Crosbie, Ball touted a 68 per cent decrease to wait times for mental health services under his government.

Liberal Leader Dwight Ball says the wait time for mental health services has dropped under his watch. (Katie Breen/CBC)

He said his party brought in the tuition freeze and intends to keep it. He's against privatization and pro-carbon tax.

Progressive Conservatives

When not ridiculing Ball, Crosbie said he was anti-carbon tax and that the party has "no agenda" for privatization.

Ches Crosbie says under his leadership, new grads who stay in the province would get money. (Katie Breen/CBC)

He brought up a tax credit announced in his blue book Tuesday for graduates who stay in the province.

Political firing?

During an answer around equality, Crosbie named two women on his team — his sister, Beth Crosbie, who's running in Virginia Waters-Pleasantville, and his chief of staff, Denise Tubrett.

Tubrett was the deputy assistant minister of regional services under the Department of Health and Community Services.

Crosbie told the crowd Ball "had her fired because her father-in-law is a PC senator."

A government bio online says Tubrett spent more than 20 years in the public service.
It certainly wasn't because of any family connection that she would have had.- Dwight Ball
Tubrett confirmed by phone Tuesday evening that she was let go from her position, without cause, in December 2017 — two years into Ball's mandate.

Tubrett feels her termination was "definitely" due to her connection to Senator Norman Doyle.

Other than saying "I did not know that" immediately after Crosbie's accusation, Ball didn't elaborate on it during the debate.

He told reporters afterwards that he doesn't know who Tubrett's father-in-law is and that any political leanings would have had "nothing to do with the decision that was made."
The only possible reason for her firing would be political- Ches Crosbie
"I don't know the details," he said. "But it certainly wasn't because of any family connection that she would have had."

Crosbie didn't provide any evidence to back up his claim around Tubrett's dismissal.
He said she "had a sterling reputation in government" and "the only possible reason for her firing would be political."

"There was nothing else," he said. "You can ask people in the health department if you want."

The NDP, PC and Liberal leaders will face off again Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. NT for the televised debate, after CBC's Here and Now.
